A t every Mass, selections from the Sacred Scriptures are read. This Sunday, the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time in Cycle C, we hear from the book of Sirach, the Psalms, the Letter of St. Paul to the Hebrews, and the Gospel of Luke. No matter which book of the Bible we read, we are reading the word of God. The Second Vatican Council

issued a dogmatic constitution on divine revelation entitled Dei verbum, the word of God, on November 18, 1965. This document of Vatican II can help us understand what the Scriptures are and how we should treat them.

Dei verbum says “Sacred Scripture is the word of God in as much as it is consigned to writing under the in-spiration of the divine Spirit” (DV 9). When God inspired the human author to write, He did so in a way that allowed the human author to make use the talents that God had bestowed on them:

“The books of both the Old and New Testaments in their entirety, with all their parts, are sacred and canonical because written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author and have been handed on as such to the Church herself. In composing the sacred books, God chose men and while employed by Him they made use of their powers and abilities, so that with Him acting in them and through them, they, as true authors, consigned to writing everything and only those things which He wanted” (DV 11).

Although every human author of scripture played an important role in revelation, God is the primary author of Sacred Scripture. “Therefore, since everything asserted by the inspired authors or sacred writers must be held to be asserted by the Holy Spirit, it follows that the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching solidly, faithfully and without error that truth which God wanted put into sacred writings for the sake of salvation” (DV 11).

This does not mean that understanding the Scriptures will always be easy because “God speaks in Sacred Scripture through men in human fashion” (DV 12). So, when interpreting Scripture, “in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate to us,” there is the need to “investigate what meaning the sacred writers really intended, and what God wanted to manifest by means of their words” (DV 12). In order to arrive at a right understanding of the Sa-cred Scriptures, “Holy Scripture must be read and interpreted in the sacred spirit in which it was written,” that is, it must be approached as the word of God (DV 12). Although each individual book of the Holy Bible has a different hu-man author, all the books of the Bible have one Divine Author. So, “attention must be given to the content and unity of the whole of Scripture” (DV 12). In addition, “the living tradition of the whole Church must be taken into account along with the harmony which exists between elements of the faith” (DV 12).

When read the Sacred Scriptures on our own or when we hear them in Church, let us always remember that God is their primary author. God Bless,

Fr. Richard A. Yevchak, IVE

3 ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Parishioners of Ss. Peter and Paul: During this Jubilee year of Mercy, Pope Francis has sent a call out to us all to really look for ways to live out the Corporal Works of Mercy. This is such a beautiful way to live...looking for ways to be His hands and

feet to those in need and also is reminiscent of Blessed Mother Theresa's call. So, in celebration of her Canoniza-tion which will take place September 4th, 2016, our Parish of Ss. Peter and Paul has signed up to host the Food For Friends outreach through Salvation Army on the day of her Canonization! This is a beautiful way to serve those less fortunate in our community, working together as a Parish outside our church walls to bring Glory to God. To register yourself for this service mission, please RSVP the number of members in your family who are available to join in with us on September 4th and how you feel called to serving that day to Beverly Miller in the Parish office or at [email protected]. There are many ways to help:

1. cook/set up (11 am) 2. serving 3. clean up (1 pm) 4. donations of food or money

PHÚC ÂM: Lc 14, 1. 7-14

"Hễ ai nhắc mình lên, sẽ phải hạ xuống, và ai hạ mình xuống,

sẽ được nhắc lên". Tin Mừng Chúa Giêsu Kitô theo Thánh

Luca.

22º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 28 DE AGOSTO 2016

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
