Repatriation flights from Vietnam
Although each passenger had their own unique circumstances as to
how the global pandemic affected their lives, all were delighted to say
farewell to a period characterised by being trapped abroad and
welcomed their long-awaited journey home.
A group of 21 South Africans was repatriated on 13 June through a
private chartered flight operated by Maple Aviation. On 18 June, a
SAA flight from Hanoi repatriated 37 South Africans from Vietnam.
Before these dedicated repatriation flights, seven South Africans
managed to book commercial flights to link up with the SAA
repatriation flight from Doha to make their way home.
The SAA repatriation flight of 18 June also carried 20 00 medical face
masks, a donation from the National Assembly of Vietnam to the
South African Parliament, to assist in the fight against the COVID-19
epidemic.
The Ambassador of South Africa to Vietnam, Mr MK Lekgoro,
conveyed his best wishes to his fellow South Africans returning home
and thanked the staff at DIRCO, the Embassy and SAA for their hard
work and diligence, and extended his appreciation to the Government
of Vietnam, with special reference to the support rendered by the
Department of Immigration of Vietnam.
After more than three months of being stranded in Vietnam, a total of 65 South Africans were repatriated to South Africa from Vietnam during June 2020.
“Good day ,
Baby Clarissa Angel-Grace de Beer, myself Tyla and Siegfried Jacobus Basson, would love to thank you all so much for all your hard work and compassion to help us get baby
Clarissa back to SA safely. We are truly happy to say that we are safe in quarantine .We are truly so relieved and happy to be home. We are absolutely grateful for everything.
Enjoy your time and families on that side in Vietnam, and be blessed.
Much love
Tyla”
“I was one of the passengers on this flight. We are all safely back in our beloved South Africa,
and in quarantine in the Garden Court hotel at Eastgate.
To people who have not experienced being stuck outside SA for months on end, this post will
mean nothing. But to us who boarded that plane on Saturday, it meant everything!
The reality that you are going home. Home to your own house, friends, family and yes a
country with its own unique problems. But with all our domestic problems, I can assure you SA
to me is still the place I want to be. I have been through a lot in my 54 years and escaped
death on a couple of times, but this (mental) challenge the last couple of months, tops
everything I have been through. Without a doubt.
Yes, I did wipe a tear, when the Air Zimbabwe (Maple flight) finally touched down at OR
Tambo on Saturday. I was fortunate enough to spend a little time with my group of people in
the pics, and on Saturday at the airport I laughed for the first time in months.
Exceptional people our South Africans are. A Tielman, a Dani, a Dee, a Ruben, a Joggie, a
Dave, a Candice, Mark, everyday people who instantly became my friends. To name a
few. Everyone with a story. COVID-19 made me old. It knocked me and it knocked my
new friends. But we will not go down. We will go on make our lives whole again. Because
we are South Africans, we are used to dusting ourselves off, ready for what is next that
life throws at us. We will rise again.
To the Ambassador and staff at our embassy in Hanoi, thank you. You know how much
this meant to us. I am not going to elaborate. You are awesome.
To Maple, Mr Tertuis Myburgh, you are a legend sir. I salute you.“- Vivian McIntyre
