In 2019 the Ministry of Education and the NZEI negotiated a new teachers’ collective agreement. As part of this agreement
it was agreed that teachers would receive an extra 8 days for planning and implementation of new curriculum information
and also professional development. The 8 days must be taken during 2020 – 2022. We have already had a number in 2020.
This year we are having two days (Monday 30th August and Friday 22nd October). The staff will be undertaking Professional
Development on these days so the children will not be able to attend school on those days. Please place these days in your
diaries.
On Sunday 13th June, Richmond School entered 4 teams into the
Strictly Jump Jam Nelson competition.
All the Jump Jammers put on an
excellent performance and did a
fantastic job with their routines.
All four teams received a merit
for technical execution and two
of the four also received a merit
in presentation. The Richmond Rockets team also came away with 2nd place in the
Freshman Year 1-4 category. WELL DONE! Fabulous effort from all four teams. We are so proud of you!

Next week we are holding interviews. I am delighted to see so many parents have booked an interview time. The reports
and portfolios provide parents with a good gauge about where their children are performing academically and how well
they are progressing in the other very important areas such as social and personal development. The discussions at the
interviews are also invaluable.
So thank you all for attending, especially in the during winter time. The interviews, reports and portfolio are all part of
quality home-school partnership.

PARENTS OF YEAR 6 STUDENTS Waimea Intermediate invite and encourage Parents/Caregivers of year 6 students to attend their information evening on Wednesday 15th September at 7pm in the Waimea Intermediate hall. They encourage you to bring your child to this evening.

The School Support staff would like to say a huge thank you to
the teaching staff, management and children for a fabulous support
staff week. The lovely messages from children were heartwarming
and very sweet.
We know we are valued and appreciated at Richmond School.
Room 7 had a very special visitor in their room last week. Thanks to Richard de Hamel who contracts to Otago
University for coming in to teach us about Maori Fishing Technology. We all LOVED the hands-on learning we
experienced.
On Wednesday Richard de Hamel came to Room 7. The thing I liked the most was the harakeke
because we got to play with it. We also got to try to make some smoke by rubbing kaikōmako and
māhoe together. I got some smoke. Before that we were shown a real picture of whahine holding
the wood down. It was very loud and exciting.

One day Richard de Hamel came and showed us how the Māori got the bait in the morning. They
got an amazing black hairy spider and tied it around the hook alive! That was their fishing bait. I
also liked his amazing mihi box. I had a great time.

Richard de Hamel taught us about: wahine fires, pepeha (mihi) box, Dark Blue Bluey - the blue cod,
Māori fishing, Mapua Aquarium, fishing hooks made out of big bones, tool making technology, a
harakeke net and some string, and an enormous waka. My most favourite activity was the amazing
wahine fire. I also LOVED the story about Bluey. Oh, and also the one about the cool wahine fire.
I was the closest to making a a fire because the very very tip of the wood was getting warmer and
warmer and warmer. There was a lot of smoke.

Richard de Hamel showed us how to make string. He used harakeke and a blunt knife to make

of 8 hours weekend work with flexible hours. Probability of extra
work coming available during week days.
Cleaning experience preferred but not essential.
Must be able to manage self and work independently.
Need to be reliable and have full driver’s licence.
