Mary Dominguez died peacefully, while sleeping, early Monday morning, Jan. 30, 2012. Mary was born July 21,1919 in Superior, the third child of Marcial and Consuelo Padilla. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Jess L. Dominguez (1999), and her son Joseph (Lynne) Dominguez (1994). She was the adored and loved mother of Jess (Darlean) Dominguez, Grass Valley, California; Irene (Gerald) Fairman, Palmdale, California; Guy (Linda) Dominguez, San Jose, California; Laura (Sal)

Cassarino, Patterson, California; Jaime (Cindy) Dominguez, San Jose, California; Tisha (Frank) Sanchez De Tagle, San Jose, California. She was the dearly loved sister of Reyna (Bernie) Medina, and Connie (Manuel) Ruiz of Superior, and the dearly loved grandmother of 15 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 15 great-grandchildren. Mary grew up in Superior and attended schools there. She moved to San Jose, California, after her husband was discharged from the Army, at the end of the war. Mary enjoyed her life to the fullest. She and

her husband raised their family of seven children as well as owning and operating a dry cleaning business for 25 years. She was an avid bowler, and enjoyed sewing. Mary and Jess retired to Auburn, California, where Jess, a retired building contractor, built their home. After her husband’s death, Mary moved back to San Jose in 2000 to be closer to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Dominguez were held Feb. 5 and 6 in California. Interment followed at the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.

The Lord came for Frank “Whitey” G. Lopez on February 25, 2012 in Casa Grande, Arizona. On October 20, 1948 in Hernandez, New

Superior to marry and shortly afterwards he became a proud father of twin boys. Later in life he became the caregiver to both his parents, until he was unable to, due to his own illness. He was an amazing artist, taking after his father and becoming a great carpenter. He could make just about anything out of wood and turn something dull into pure beauty. Carpentry wasn’t his only master; he also loved to paint. Another trait from his father was that he was a perfectionist in every project he did. He was preceded in death by his father, Margarito Lopez. He leaves behind his mother Molly Lopez, and his twin boys Frank Jr. (Pancho) and Ivan Lopez; granddaughter, Chanel Lopez; brother, Mike (Blanche) Lopez, all of Superior; sister, Condra (Terry) Lafreniere, of Kenwicke, Washington; six nieces and nephews

and many cousins who loved him like a brother and uncle! Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 3, at St. Frances of Assisi Catholic Church in Superior, beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at the Superior Fairview Cemetery. The family would like to invite all family and friends for a dinner at St. Mary’s Center following services. Superior Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Members of the Superior Chamber of Commerce have been busy preparing for the 24th Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival “Discover Superior… Past and Present”. This year the Apache Leap Mining Festival is being sponsored by Resolution Copper as well a other local contributors. Event organizers are promising that this annual event will be bigger and better than ever before. The three-day event will be held March 9-11 on Main Street. This year the Chamber has contracted with Brown Amusements to bring in a larger carnival with more thrill rides. Presale wristbands can be purchased at the Caboose Visitor Center or Save Money Market for $18. These tickets must be purchased before Friday, March 9. On Saturday, make sure you bring your lawn chairs and come early to catch the parade and then prepare to watch the annual mining competition. This year there will be $2,000 cash purse! The overall winner will walk away with $1,000 and all entrants will have a chance to win one of five $100 bills, thanks to Resolution Copper.

Witness the difficult work the miners endure, with spiking, sawing, mucking and jack leg drilling. Pre registration for the mining competition is encouraged; you can pre-register at Save Money Market. On Sunday there will be a youth mining competition and an axe throwing competition. If carnival rides and the mining competitions are not for you, there will be plenty of entertainment. This year’s festival entertainment lineup includes The Yellow Bird Native American Hoop Dancers, Sun City Pom Dancers, Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior, Wild Man Phil’s Reptile Show, Arizona Gun Slingers and everyone’s favorite, the Chihuahua Races. Saturday the Marty Ramirez Band will play for a street dance. Many of the local mining companies and contractors will also have demonstration booths and there will be presentations about the local mining history as well as abandoned mine safety. For more information on the official schedule of events for the 24th Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival please visit www.superiorarizonachamber.org or call them at 520-689-0200.

By Mila Lira The Town of Superior Planning and Zoning Commission met last week to review the requests from the developer of the Magma Hotel. The variances were to allow hotel rooms to be built above the ground level, a variance to reduce the amount of parking needed

and a variance to allow use of the town’s side walk right of way to rebuild the original screen porch that was on the building. The Planning and Zoning commission recommended that the requests be approved by the Town Council. The Superior Town Council will review the requests

made by the developer and the recommendations of Planning and Zoning this Thursday, March 1. The attorney for the developer of the Magma Hotel explained that they plan to begin the remodeling soon and expect to have the hotel open and operating by the end of this year.

By Mila Lira Central Arizona College has been required to adjust the boundaries of the Pinal County Community College District Governing Board. This redistricting was also required to meet the Department of Justice requirements just as the County Board of Supervisors and State and Congressional districts were required to do. The majority of the changes to the district boundaries are on the western side of the county where there has been tremendous growth in the San Tan Valley area and Maricopa. District One will consist of all of the Copper Corridor communities, parts of Florence, Eloy and Coolidge and has been designated as minority district. The minority district designation means that the district has the highest percentage of Hispanic Citizen Voting Age Population. SaddleBrooke will move out of District One and move into District Three. The PCCCD Governing Board of directors decided earlier this month to move forward with two of the six plans that were presented by Lisa T. Hauser, an attorney with Gammage & Burnham PLC of Phoenix who

Copper Corridor to remain in CAC District One

specializes in election law. She and Douglas Johnson, president of the National Demographics Corporation in Glendale, California, have been retained by CAC to formulate the redistricting options. The consultants advised the governing board that maps two and three were the most likely to meet all the requirements as set forth by the Department of Justice. After the public has a chance to review the maps the PCCCD Governing

Board has approved the plans they will be forwarded on to the County Board of Supervisors for approval. Once approved by the Board of Supervisors the plans will be submitted to the Department of Justice for fi nal approval. The PCCCD Governing Board would like to encourage all residents and voters to and comment on them. You can view the maps directly at: http://bit.ly/y7uvIF .

By Vicki Clark Rob Bulman, the new funeral director for Griffith Mortuary and the Superior Funeral Home, discovered Arizona a few years back and just knew that someday he would move here. That opportunity came last summer when he and his wife Joyce purchased the two mortuaries located in Kearny and Superior. Rob was born and raised in North Dakota and Minnesota. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and has been working in the field for 16 years. He and his assistant, Anthony Davis, are both licensed funeral directors and offer a personalized approach for people at a very difficult time. “The business has changed in the last 15 years especially with cremation,” Rob said. “Funerals now are more like a celebration of life and we want to pay attention to the little things that families want and need.” Such needs could include anything from customized memorial cards, memory boxes and candles to specialty caskets. “A funeral is really for the living,” Rob said. “For the deceased, their journey is over and ours are still continuing. We try to make the process as easy as possible by treating the surviving people with respect right from the beginning when the families invite us into their own lives.” The two homes serve all areas around the state and will go anywhere with their services. They also offer every kind of funeral service from the very simple to the elaborate. “Even though our location is rural, we can provide anything and everything that the city facilities have to offer,” Rob said. Another service that the business offers is a pre-paid

funeral plan. “A pre-paid plan allows individuals and families to make payments and the biggest advantage to this process is being able to take the financial strain away from the survivors,” Rob said. “It also allows the families to know as to what are the last wishes of the deceased.” Rob also wanted to put out the word that any pre-paid policies previously secured with either mortuaries will be honored. The new technology of today allows a whole new world and Rob said by accessing their websites, people will be able to see what they have as to services provided as well an opportunity to offer condolences online and

review obituaries, either current or previous and an archive is accessible Griffith Mortuary is located at 101 Johnston Drive in Kearny, the phone number is (520) 363-5353, website is www.griffthmortuary.com and you can e-mail Rob at [email protected]. Superior Funeral Home is located at 379 South Ray Road in Superior. The phone number is (520) 689-9692 and the website is www.superiorfuneral.com. And the e-mail address is the same as above. Rob said in closing that he is often asked how he can he deal with death? His response, “It’s part of the job I chose, but I don’t really deal with death, I deal with the living.”

Barbara McGuire, previous four year lawmaker of LD23, announced her intention of a 2012 run for office. “McGuire, a moderate Democrat, business woman and Salvation Army Director with decades of service to rural Arizona communities announced her intention to run to supporters today from the new LD8 in the heart of the Copper Corridor,” said long time advisor, Tom Elliott. McGuire’s expertise has been in natural resources as a ranking member in military affairs and public safety, community support, long term care and more. McGuire’s motto of EAR (efficient, accountable, responsive) government will continue as a guiding

philosophy in policy to improve state and local economies, real estate recovery, education, growth and quality of life issues. McGuire already has endorsements from a broad array of local, state and national officials, local groups, unions and businesses. McGuire

has community, business interests and family throughout LD 8 in Globe, Casa Grande, San Manuel, Superior, San Tan and Kearny. Details will be forthcoming in following days in media releases, on Facebook and McGuire2012.com. [email protected].

By Mila Lira Members from the Superior Chamber of Commerce were invited to take a quick peek at the new Cobre Valley Superior Clinic on US Highway 60. Community Relations Director Evelyn Vargas explained that the clinic has experienced a few construction setbacks due to the Mary Drive alignment and the need for a larger water pipe to access the building. They expect the clinic to open in September. The clinic will have a pharmacy, laboratory services, several general practitioner exam rooms as well as space for specialty doctors. Depending on demand they do have room to have X-Ray services as well.

By John Hernandez On May 12, 1954 a military aircraft crashed somewhere in the mountains eight miles west of Superior. The plane was flying out of

the old Williams Air Force Base when it went down due to mechanical problems. Air Cadet Charles Noble was flying the Air Force Lockheed T-33 practicing

solo aerobatics when the mechanical failure occurred. Noble did not eject himself from the plane and was killed in the crash. It was reported that

Air Cadet Charles Noble

Air Force Lockheed T-33

Superior residents M.H. Crittenden, Dee Simpson, Russell Potts and Jack Flanigan notified the Air Force of the crash. The location of the crash site is unknown. Brad Gray, a respected aircraft “archaeologist” (one who researches and finds crash sites), is trying to find the site. He has been in contact with the pilot’s family and they would like to find the site and visit it in memory of their loved one. Gray has been locating and documenting military crash sites for 20 years. He has visited almost 300 crash sites around the country but mostly in Arizona. He had always been interested in military aviation. In the 1980s, he was the manager of a small Air Medical Transport company that flew Native Americans from the reservation to hospitals. He would hear stories from the pilots about crash sites they had seen while flying over Arizona. He then started going on weekend trips with the pilots to the crash sites and studying them. Those trips were the start of his hobby. Brad is trying to find out

more information about the plane crash site. He is looking for anyone that would have information about the crash or the above named witnesses that reported it. If you know any of the witnesses

or a friend or relative of theirs that may know where the site is or have heard about it, Brad would like to speak with them. You can contact Brad at (480) 209-3511 or email: [email protected].

By Mila Lira The days are getting longer, the weeds are starting to pop up and that means that Little League season is right around the corner. This year the T-Ball season will begin on Monday, March 12, with the first game being played at 5:30 p.m. and the second game starting at 6:45 p.m. Parents if you have not already signed your children up for the 2012 Little League Season this week is your last chance to sign up. League officials will be at the Superior Junior Senior High Multipurpose Room from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, and Friday, March 2. The league needs the cooperation of parents and guardians to complete the registration by March the second to allow for tryouts and uniform purchasing. The league is still in need of coaches and assistant coaches as well as concession and field maintenance. A coaches’ meeting will be held on Monday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m at the Superior Little League Field. All coaches are required to attend this meeting. The League will also be hosting their annual Three-Man Scramble golf tournament fundraiser on Sunday, April 1, at the Queen Valley Golf Resort. By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center As Christians, we talk of praising and worshipping God. We make it an important part of our church services. We even buy music to play at home, in the car or while we are walking and jogging. Psalm 98 is one of the Scripture passages that speak about praising the Lord. It reveals that there are different ways to worship our God. Each style is correct; none is more ‘right’ than any other. It begins with, “sing to the Lord a new song.” This is what happens when your heart is full of joy and feels like it is ready to burst. You just let it ‘burst into song.’ You start singing, a song that is not yet written. As the words or thoughts come from your heart, you create a tune and match the words in your heart to it. A song is born! It is a brand new song, special, and just for the Lord, from you. We are told to shout for joy

Pastor’s Cornerto the Lord, and to also burst into jubilant song. This seems to be what King David was doing as he danced beside the Ark of the Lord, when it returned to Jerusalem. Our worship is to be spontaneous, not rigid or formal. It should be exciting and full of energy. Verses 5 and 6 tell us to use instruments for making music. The horns and stringed instruments are to accompany the singing. Nature is not left out here. Let the sea and all the animals in it rejoice. The rivers are to clap their hands while the mountains are singing for joy. When the disciples were criticized for loudly worshipping God; Jesus said, “If they keep silent, then the rocks will cry out,” Luke 19:40. With all the rocks around this area, it could get quite noisy should we stop praising the Lord. It should always be normal for a Christian to sing and worship the Lord. The simple act of loving our Savior helps to release the stress that builds up in our lives. The resulting joy produces the strength and energy we need to enthusiastically praise the Lord!
