My dear friends in Christ, Lent is a time of conversion and encounter. During this time, we focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as we prepare our hearts to commemorate Christ’s death and resurrection. Throughout His time on earth Christ encountered many people and in each instance He showed us how to love one another and treat people with compassion. Today our world is bustling, always “on” and always “connected.” We fail to truly encounter those around us. Let us take time this Lent to ask “who is my neighbor?” This Lent, Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Rice Bowl program can help us answer that question. We are invited to re-flect on how we are all neighbors, both near and far. How can we help those who are hungry and poor in our community and across the world? Through our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and alms-giving we encounter Christ in the many faces of our neighbors. And after the 40 days of Lent, we will be prepared to encounter the risen Christ who encourages us to see His face, especially in the poor. Each year, CRS Rice Bowl raises nearly $6 million for Catholic Relief Services with an estimated $2 million of that total retained by dioceses in the United States to help alleviate hunger and poverty at the local level. Last year, our diocese used funds to support efforts such as Caritas Food Pantry, an outreach of St. Mary Parish in Custer and St. Alphonsus’ Food Pantry in Grand Rapids. CRS Rice Bowl brings Lent spiritually to life for families, parishes, and schools, while connecting Catholics in our diocese with our brothers and sisters around the world. Through Lenten prayers and devotions, reflections, and simple Lenten meal ideas that connect us with our neighbors, CRS Rice Bowl helps to en-sure a focused, fruitful Lent. Together, let us take time during these 40 days to reflect on the needs of our brothers and sisters, encounter them, and let them know Christ’s love through us. Thank you for your prayers and care of the poor. CRS Rice Bowl is successful each year be-cause of your sacrifices. Additional resources may be found by visiting crsricebowl.org. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

In His suffering and death, Jesus reveals to us the truth about God and ourselves. Join us as we pray reflecting on the Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 7:00pm during Lent.

LENTEN BLACK BOOKS

The “Little Black Book’, which includes six-minute reflec-tions on the weekly Gospels of Lent, will be available in the Church Narthex. Think of it as your companion for Lent. The goal is for you to find six minutes of quiet time everyday to walk through this book one page at a time.

OPERATION RICE BOWL

This is one of our parish outreach activities. Operation Rice Bowl the largest charitable Lenten project in the world. The funds donated reach around the globe as a demonstration of our Christian love. Please remember the ministry of Operation Rice Bowl in your prayers and in your generosity. Rice Bowls are available in the Church narthex. Please return them to Church during the Easter Triduum or the Sunday following Easter Sunday.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

This year, along with the regular confession time on Sat-urday, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available after the Stations of Cross each Friday during Lent.

BLESSING THE FOOD BASKETS

Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace nap-kin. Some foods in the baskets have a symbolic mean-ing: eggs represent life and Christ's resurrection; bread is symbolic of Jesus; salt represents purification; horse-radish represents the bitter sacrifice of Christ; ham is symbolic of great joy and abundance. This blessing will take place on Holy Saturday, March 31st, at noon in the Church.

LENT AT ALL SAINTS ACADEMY

During Lent this year, all students of ASA will participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They will also contin-ue to raise funds for the Kids Food Basket and perform various acts of service for them, such as decorating lunch bags for their Sack Supper program.

Via Dolorosa: Students will meet at the Middle School campus on the morning of Holy Thursday, March 29th, and begin their walk to the Elementary School campus. While walking, the students will be praying the rosary.

LENT FACTS

•The word “Lent” comes from an Anglo-Saxon word which means “lengthen”, a reference to lengthening days as spring ap-proaches.

•Lent lasts for 40 weekdays begin-ning Ash Wednesday and con-cluding at sundown on Holy Thursday.

•The remainder of Holy Week - be-ginning with the Mass of the last Supper on Holy Thursday, and including Good Friday and Holy Saturday - are called “Triduum”. Which means three days.

•The Lenten liturgical color is purple, the color of royalty, which symbolizes the suffering of Je-sus and anticipates the glory of the Resurrec-tion.

•During Lent the Gloria and the word Alleluia are omitted from the Mass.

Lent is a time for self-sacrifice, repentance and conversion of heart.

Lent is a time of turning our hearts toward Christ and clearing out things that stand in the way of becoming closer to Christ. Our true challenges are not always the easiest. Perhaps this Lent will be a time to try fasting from things that pull us away from Christ and feasting on things that bring us closer to Him. This is not a new idea, but it is a more holistic way of looking at this sea-son of Lent. Instead of just penitential this sea-son is meant to be transformative. We move from darkness into light. The Lenten prayer be-low presents a challenge for the season of Lent.

Why do the dates of Ash Wednesday and Easter Change? Easter is celebrated on the first Sun-day after the first full moon follow-ing the spring equinox. It can occur as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th. Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter Sunday. Where do they get the ashes? Palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday are burned. The ashes are blessed, sprinkled with holy wa-ter and incensed.

Why do we hear two different things when receiving ashes? It is because ashes have two different meanings. “Remember you are dust” helps us recall our mortality. “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” reminds us we are Disciples of Christ. How long may we leave the ashes on our foreheads? They may remain all day. Wash them off before going to bed.

A Lenten Prayer Fast from judging others; feast on Christ in them. Fast from wanting more; feast on being thankful. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from worry; feast on trust. Fast from complaining; feast on enjoyment. Fast from negatives; feast on positives. Fast from stress; feast on prayer. Fast from anger; feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from gossip; feast on silence. Fast from fighting; feast on peace. -Adopted from a Lenten prayer by William Arthur Ward

A message from Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York: “There is no more tried and true way of passing on our Catholic faith to our kids than by sacrificing to put them in Catholic school. Data proves they persevere in the faith at higher rates, pray better, and more faithful to Sunday Mass, live gospel values, are more generous to their parish, even have happier marriag-es, volunteer more, and transmit the faith to their own children that those not in a Catholic school.” Registra-tion for the fall term is now under-way at All Saints Academy. Call ASA at 364-9453 or visit our web site at asagr.org to learn how you can give your children or grandchil-dren the gift of a lifetimeFthe gift of a Catholic school education.
