Leukemia Survivor Shares Marilyn Monroe Memorabilia with MUPL Patrons What would a 22-year-old male have in common with the late Mar-

ilyn Monroe? How about the will to overcome any obstacle?

“When I was 17 and battled leukemia, I would read about her and

all of the endeavors and hardships she went through. With every battle,

she never gave up on her dream of becoming the best she could be. This

inspired me and gave me hope that even though my situation was dif-

ferent, I could fight through my obstacles and overcome my illness,”

said Derrick Lucous, member of the Milton-Union Class of 2012.

Lucous has been in remission for five years now, but his love for

Marilyn and memorabilia collection has only grown. He will have a por-

tion of his Marilyn Monroe collectibles on display throughout May at

the library. This is in honor of what would have been Marilyn’s 90th

birthday on June 1. “Marilyn stated in interviews, ‘Hold a good thought

for me,’” Lucous said, “and this is my tribute to her in celebration of

her birthday.”

The library is located at 560 S. Main St., West Milton and is open

Monday thru Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Visit www.mupubliclibrary.org for more information.

Valley Echoesby Gary Godfrey

Eating Healthy Is Over Rated

I’ve probably written about this before, but I can’t remember. After all, I’m going to turn 71 thisyear.

I’m a diabetic.

My doctor has successfully handled this problem with one pill per day. I’m still supposed to watchmy intake and exercise. But we all know how this is going . . .

Take this week, for instance.

We celebrated Ginger’s birthday week with family, friends, and the next table at dinner. In everyinstance, we had to have some kind of dessert. If you didn’t catch the above sentence, Ginger cel-ebrates her birthday by the week, not by the day. She copied this idea from a good friend whoexclaimed, “It’s wonderful.”

Yesterday, we helped Dianna Beck celebrate her birthday. She, too, turned 70. When we had ourpicture taken with the birthday Princess, we calculated 210 years of memories and all the crazythings we’ve been through over these years.

Of course, there was cake, and a lot more things you’re not supposed to eat as a diabetic. Iremember my doctor telling me, “You can eat desserts, just watch your portions.”

He didn’t tell me what to do when this was the fifth birthday, second anniversary, first farewell, and seven graduations we’ve attended. And every party served some kind of cake.

Ginger tells me to simply stop eating sweets. This is easy for her to say, because she eats fruit andveggies like I eat brownies and ice cream.

However, I’m watching my portions.

THIs wEEk’s bOTTOM lInE: Eating healthy is over rated.

There is only one difference between a long life and a good dinner: that, in the dinner, the

sweets come last. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson
