Title: Safe, but not entirely (The presence of aflatoxin M1 in milk points to the need to regulate cattle fodder)

Context:The “most comprehensive and representative” milk safety and qualitysurvey has demolished the perception of large-scale milk adulterationin India. ➢ The survey by an independent agency at the behest of the FoodSafety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) found 93% of thesamples were absolutely safe. The samples were tested for 13common adulterants and three contaminants — pesticides, aflatoxinM1 and antibiotics.

➢ The survey claims that quantitative analysis of all adulteratedsamples showed the amount of adulterants and contaminants in thedozen samples was not high and hence “unlikely to pose seriousthreat” to human health.

➢ According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer thecontaminant has been classified as “possibly carcinogenic tohumans”. Its carcinogenic potency is estimated to be about a one-tenth of aflatoxin B1.

➢ Since the current survey has limited itself to milk, it is not clear howwidespread aflatoxin M1 contamination is in milk products such ascheese, and hence the total exposure to it.

➢ Aflatoxin M1 in milk and milk products is a public health concernespecially in infants and young children as milk constitutes one ofthe major sources of nutrients. According to the World HealthOrganisation, exposure to aflatoxin M1 in milk and milk products isespecially high in areas where the grain quality used as animal feedis poor.

Final Words➢ Improper storage of food harvest in warm and humid conditions

leads to aflatoxin contamination that is much higher than what isseen in the field. Equally important is in having facilities to regularlytest for aflatoxin M1.

Title: No surprise in store(A tired Opposition was no match to the hyper nationalism of the BJP in the poll campaign)

Context:The modest turnouts in Maharashtra and Haryana on Monday could havebeen expected, considering the lethargy that had loomed over theAssembly election campaigns in both States.

➢As the first test of public opinion after the Lok Sabha election and giventhe fact that both these States have been under Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) rule for the last five years, this could have been an occasion to testthe party’s overall performance in government.

➢However, that was not how the campaign turned out as the BJP soughtto focus the public attention on selective components of its track recordrelated to national security and the Opposition collapsed in both States.

➢Central investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorateappeared to be trying to tilt the scale in the ruling party’s favour as theyenthusiastically pursued old cases against Opposition leaders, in themidst of the campaign.

➢The BJP made fresh promises to the electorate, while it successfullyavoided any discussion on some of the previous promises that remainundelivered.

➢ Far from showing any sign of recovery since their crushing defeat in theLok Sabha election, Opposition parties have sunk further, as theycontinue to grope in the dark for an organising principle. They went tothe polls with tired faces and old slogans.

Final Words➢There was little in the battle field that suggested there could be some

surprise in store when the votes are counted on October 24.
