#Dear Families, Friends, and Supporters,

We are excited to present our 2021-2022 Fall, Winter, and Spring respite brochure. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic led to Via West Campus being shut down in March 2020. We are eager to return to our in-person programs this September.

Many of you are wondering what camp will look like in a post Covid-19 world. Rest assured that we will continue to follow the guidelines of the CDC, and the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health to maintain the cleanliness of the campus and the safety of our participants and staff. Health, safety, and your peace of mind while your loved ones are entrusted to our care is, and has always been, our highest priority. We will maintain an open line of communication throughout the year and will work closely with you if there are new government mandates or other disruptions to the camp schedule. We will continuously update the website www.viaservices.org as things change.

At Via West, we are always looking for new ways to reinvent our programs. We are excited to be adding in new offerings, including multiple sessions ranging from 3-9 days in length during Ski Week and the continuation of Social Saturdays and Sundays, a program that launches this July. If you are looking for the dates and descriptions for our Altitude program, please visit: www.viaservices.org/services/altitude

Thank you so much for continuing to put your trust in us as we navigate through these difficult times. We are all in this together, and we are working hard to provide the best respite season for you.

Sincerely,

Matt Bell, Executive Director

FALL, WINTER, AND SPRING PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS Traditional Day & Weekend Programs (Young Adults and Adults) Traditional Day & Weekend Programs (Kids, Teens, and Young Adults)Traditional Day and Weekend Overnight Programs provide independent living skills and executive functioning, all while having so much fun. Activities will be themed to each weekend and will include culinary arts — including farm-to-table education, hiking, music, sports and physical fitness, dramatic arts, creative arts, and more. Check-in is from 5:00-6:00pm on Friday, and check-out is from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday. Traditional day program is available on Saturday only from 9:00am-8:00pm, with check-in from 9:00-11:00am. Check-in for Ski Week full sessions is from 10:00am-12:00pm on the first day. Ski Week day program runs from 9:00am-8:00pm, with check-in from 9:00-11:00am.

Social Saturdays and Sundays (Young Adults and Adults) Social Saturdays and Sundays (Kids, Teens, and Young Adults) Social Saturdays and Sundays is a shorter program offered on weekends that is based on our Via West community integration outings. This program is also a great introduction to the types of services we offer at Via West Campus. Families are encouraged to use one of these sessions as a trial before a full day or weekend camp. Check-in is at 11:00am at the specified meetup location, and check-out is at 3:00pm at the specified meetup location.

Travel Camp (Young Adults and Adults) Travel Camp (Kids, Teens, and Young Adults) Travel Camps give participants the chance to spend time exploring their own local community and beyond by experiencing overnight trips in a safe, nurturing environment. Check-in is from 7:00-8:00am on the first day and check-out is from 5:00-6:00pm on the last day. These opportunities are tailored to fit the needs of 3:1 participants. Those with a 2:1 ratio may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility. There is no option for day program or for those requiring a 1:1 ratio.

Adventures in Life Readiness Adventures in Life Readiness programs are for 3:1 participants, ages 16+ with developmental and/or physical disabilities who are ready to master relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes for working at Via West in preparation for community work settings. Participants will assist with camp programming. They will also be coached on vocational scenarios, practice executive functioning skills, social norms, and household management skills. To enroll, participants must have completed at least two summer and/or weekend sessions within the past five years. These sessions run concurrently with select traditional weekend programs, and there is no day option available. Check-in is from 5:00-6:00pm on Friday, and check-out is from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday. Participants must be pre-approved in order to enroll.

Science Camp and Science Field Days Our science camps provide an opportunity for students from special needs schools/organizations to have fun while gaining valuable knowledge and hands-on experience from interactive and sensory driven learning. Students will partake in field days and overnight camp excursions and enjoy activities like horseback riding, discovery walks, farm-to-table culinary rotations, animal therapy, creek exploration, night hikes, dances, and more. Please visit www.viaservices.org for more information.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+FUN AT VASONA September 12, 2021 (SOCIAL SUNDAY)The sun is out — so let’s have some fun at the park! We’ll play a few games of soccer and football, and then break for a nice picnic lunch. We’ll also create some fun art projects to bring home — sun catchers, tissue paper flowers, and paper plate rainbows.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL HOMECOMING

ADVENTURES IN LIFE READINESSSeptember 17-19, 2021 (FRI-SUN)It’s the “Start of Something New” with our Wildcats weekend of sports, music, and drama. Our opening campfire pep rally and movie night viewing of High School Musical will get us psyched for what’s to come! We’ll “Get’cha Head in the Game” with basketball drills, cheerleading routines, and talent show prep. Everyone will make and take home Sharpay’s cookies, yearbooks, and cheerleading pom poms. Our homecoming dance, the big basketball game, horseback riding, and the talent show will cap off our fun time.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+THE WITCHES October 15-17, 2021 (FRI-SUN)It’s Halloween and that means that the witches are out in full force! In order to stop them, we’ll first have to learn how to recognize a witch during our scavenger hunt — watch out for purple eyes! After our field trip to the pumpkin patch, everyone will carve their jack-o-lanterns and spend some time in the kitchen making witch’s brew and finger sandwiches. Magic potions, witch hats, and spooky

succulents will also be made, and we’ll end our witchy weekend with a creepy carnival. Field Trip: Spina Farms Pumpkin Patch (subject to change)

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+ROSES AND ROSICRUCIAN October 30, 2021 (SOCIAL SATURDAY)We are ready for a spooky Halloween with a trip to see all the mummies at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and learn some amazing ancient history. We’ll also walk through the beautiful Rose Garden and eat lunch surrounded by flowers. Inspired by our cursed friends at the museum, we will make mummy crafts and decorate cardboard sarcophagi.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+MAJESTIC REDWOODS TRAVEL CAMP November 5-7, 2021 (FRI-SUN)California is home to some of the world’s oldest and tallest trees, and we are heading to Humboldt County to explore them. Slick the Banana Slug will lead us on a quest through the Rockefeller Forest to collect clues — if we find them all, we’ll get a special quest patch! We’ll also hike to Founder’s Grove to see the world famous Dyerville Giant and then drive along the Avenue of the Giants. On Sunday, we’ll spend some time wandering through downtown Garberville before heading back to Via West Campus.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+HEAD START ON HOLIDAY SHOPPING November 7, 2021 (SOCIAL SUNDAY)Holiday shopping is so much fun, but we want to avoid the crowds and get a good jump on our gifts for the season!

sWe’re going to spend the day at Westfield Valley Fair, checking our lists twice. We’ll have lunch in the food court, and then decorate reusable shopping bags and make some homemade presents like picture frames.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

ADVENTURES IN LIFE READINESSNovember 19-21, 2021 (FRI-SUN)We give thanks every year, but this year, we’re going back in time to discover the very first Thanksgiving. Our knowledge will be put to the test in a Jeopardy competition after learning about the history of the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and Native Americans. We’ll make cornucopias, Mayflower paper plate boats, and gratitude pumpkins, and we’ll cook a delicious Thanksgiving feast, complete with stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Some modern traditions are also a must — a Thanksgiving parade through campus and a rousing game of football will complete our Thanksgiving celebration!

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+ELF December 10-12, 2021 (FRI-SUN)Buddy the Elf, everyone’s favorite holiday friend, is here to help us celebrate our annual Operation Snowflake weekend, sponsored by the Cupertino Rotary. We’ll decorate and exchange cookies, stuff stockings for a shelter in need, make wreaths, decorate gingerbread houses, sip on comforting hot cocoa, listen to a live band, and decorate a tree that is hand delivered by local firefighters. We’ll make Buddy’s favorite spaghetti along with ornaments, snow globes, and snow angels to take home. Our festive fun wouldn’t be complete without a visit and presents from Santa Claus.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK December 18, 2021 (SOCIAL SATURDAY) We are full of holiday spirit, and what better way to spend a day than at Christmas in the Park? There are so many things for us to do and see — lights, trees, exhibits, and more! After finding a warm spot for lunch, we’ll make some festive trees and wreaths to bring home.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+VIA WEST’S GOT TALENT

ADVENTURES IN LIFE READINESSJanuary 7-9, 2022 (FRI-SUN)Everyone’s favorite talent competition is coming to Via West, and it’s your time to shine! The talent show is always a highlight of every session, and this weekend, it’s taking over

completely! Sing! Dance! Play the piano! Juggle! Perform magic! Tell a joke! The stage is all yours. We’ll also make microphone cupcakes, DIY guitars, and trophies, and we’ll compete in a musical obstacle course.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+SUNNY SAN DIEGO TRAVEL CAMP January 14-17, 2022 (FRI-MON)Kick back and enjoy the long weekend with a trip to sunny San Diego! It may be a bit chilly for a swim, but we will still spend plenty of time strolling along the beach and having fun at the Mission Beach Boardwalk. A trip down south would be incomplete without spending the day in one of the largest homes to animals in the world — the San Diego Zoo. If you think we can’t top that, then how about a day exploring Sea World? We’ll also make sure to squeeze in some souvenir shopping, sightseeing, and some delicious meals.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+CINEMA SUNDAY January 23, 2022 (SOCIAL SUNDAY)The movies are always the best cure for the winter blues! After a fun group lunch, we’ll go take in a show. We’ll spend some time going over our favorite parts of the movie, quiz each other on the details, and then make a popcorn craft to bring home.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+VIA WEST WINTER GAMES February 4-6, 2022 (FRI-SUN)Our very own Via West Winter Games have arrived just in time to coincide with the 2022 Bejing Olympics! Friday will kick off with a campfire opening ceremony, and then the games will begin in earnest on Saturday morning — egg racing, balloon relay, archery, and block stacking are just the beginning. There will be horseback riding, baking, and of course, our closing ceremonies. Each lodge will create their own flag and anthem, and everyone will bring home medals, tissue paper torches, and Olympic ring crafts.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+BOWLING BASH AND MORE February 12, 2022 (SOCIAL SATURDAY) Who is ready for strikes and turkeys? We are heading to Bowlero San Jose to knock down pins and win prizes in the arcade. We’ll take a break for lunch and to make our own toilet paper roll bowling pin sets to take home.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+DECADES OF DISNEY

ADVENTURES IN LIFE READINESSMarch 4-6, 2022 (FRI-SUN)From Snow White in 1937 to Peter Pan in 1953 to the original Lion King in 1994, we are celebrating all things classic Disney. A traditional character breakfast, old-school Mousekersize, and a Robin Hood-style archery competition will kick off the festivities. We’ll meet real life versions of our favorite furry sidekicks in the petting zoo. We’ll plant enchanted roses for Beauty and the Beast, make mini-fairy rock gardens for Tinker Bell, and decorate seashell picture frames for Ariel. Recreations of some Disney Parks recipes will satisfy our cravings: New Orleans Square chicken gumbo and Mickey Mouse sugar cookies — delicious!

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+PALO ALTO MUSEUM AND ZOO March 20, 2022 (SOCIAL SUNDAY)The Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo are a perfect way to spend a spring day. They have over 50 species of animals and 2,500 square feet of museum exhibits, and we will explore them all! During our lunch break, we’ll make our own science experiments and animal crafts.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+HAWAIIAN EXTRAVAGANZAApril 1-3, 2022 (FRI-SUN)Aloha! Grab your favorite Hawaiian shirt and settle into “island time” for our weekend of fun in the sun. From Maui to the Big Island, we’ll explore it all. Of course, there will be

horseback riding, but we’ll also make tropical smoothies, tiki masks, grass skirts, and rainbow art. After crafting some DIY ukuleles, we’ll play and sing a few classic Hawaiian tunes. An old fashioned luau, petting zoo, seashell scavenger hunt, and hula races will round out the session.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+THE AMAZING RACEApril 22-24, 2022 (FRI-SUN)It’s time for some friendly rivalry as we work in teams to accumulate points throughout the weekend in a mad race around the world! Competitions include a tricky obstacle course, eating challenging foods from other countries, building a bridge out of boxes and sticks, and tackling some new steps in the dance contest. Solve animal clues to win the scavenger hunt on our field trip to the Oakland Zoo, and then make world maps, layover lemon bars, and passports to bring home. Field Trip: Oakland Zoo (subject to change)

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+GOLFLAND SAN JOSEApril 30, 2022 (SOCIAL SATURDAY) It’s our last Social Saturday of the season, and we are heading to Golfland in San Jose for some mini golf, arcade fun, lunch, and if the weather (and operating schedule) permits, water slides! We will also make some fun pinwheels and butterfly crafts.

Young Adults and Adults ages 16+THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE

ADVENTURES IN LIFE READINESSMay 20-22, 2022 (FRI-SUN)The pool is open for the summer, but watch out! This weekend is full of water fun with a bit of the strange and unusual thrown in as we learn about the Bermuda Triangle — a part of the Atlantic Ocean where ships and aircraft are known to disappear. We’ll make cucumber boats, tornados in a jar, sea monster crafts, and sunken ship dioramas. Will our scavenger hunt to search for lost ships and planes help solve the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle? There’s only one way to find out! Our shipwrecked castaway dance is a great way to close out the weekend and the respite season.

Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis with deposit to secure reservation. We strongly encourage you to register online by going to www.viaservices.org/services/via-west. However, if necessary, we will accept your registration and deposit by phone at 408-243-7861, ext. 214. We encourage attendance at multiple sessions as our enhanced thematic programming will be very different each session.

There is a registration deposit of $120 required per session ($75 registration deposit per Social Saturday or Social Sunday). Please note that your registration will not be processed without the $120 registration deposit (per session). The deposit will be applied to the balance of your program, regardless of payment method.

In planning for each participant’s stay at Via West, costs are incurred in advance. In the case of a government mandated shutdown due to Covid-19, you will be able to receive a full refund. Otherwise, our standard cancellation policy applies which states that you must cancel within 31 days of your scheduled session, otherwise, for whatever the cancellation reason, Via will retain your registration deposit to help cover lost expenses. All other payments made will be refunded.

In order for your participant to be marked down as Paid in Full, we require:1. The payment of the Private Pay cost or the Supplemental Daily Rate (SDR) in full.If we do not have the correct, accurate Authorization to Purchase Services on the day you check-in your participant, we will be reinstituting our HOLD policy by kindly asking that you leave a credit card number or check with us in case the regional center does not authorize/update and sends us the authorization(s). The HOLD payment type will be in the amount of the Private Pay due, and it must be submitted in order for your participant to attend the session. You will then be allowed 1 week to attempt to get the session funds authorized. If they are not authorized within the 1 week hold period, we will notify you that we will be charging your card or depositing your check for the session fees at the Private Pay rate.

2. An Authorization to Purchase Services to be sent to the Via office before the start date of the session. Two Authorizations to Purchase Services are required if your participant is in a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio — one for the Camping Services, and one for Program Support. For the day programs, 10 hours is required or 4 hours for Social Saturdays and Sundays programs, in addition to the Program Support authorization. Regional Centers will no longer approve Authorization to Purchase Services after the services have been provided. You will be responsible for the amount due at the Private Pay rates if authorization(s) are not approved or accurate upon check-in.

RATES INFORMATIONThe rates listed underneath each ratio are the Private Pay costs. In addition to what is funded by the regional center, regardless of ratio, there is a Supplemental Daily Rate (SDR) that is mandatory and paid in full by the parent/caregiver listed underneath the SDR column.
