A Message From Our Library Director

Nothing prepared me for 2020. Month after month, we found ourselves adapting repeatedly to ever-changing circumstances without the benefit of established guidelines for best practices. While the Easttown Library building has been closed at times over the past year, we have not stopped providing you with many of the services that you have come to expect and rely upon. We can glean from thank you notes that we have received that the library has helped many people in the community to manage some of the hardships that the pandemic has imposed on our lives. Thank you for letting us know that our efforts matter!

From its humble beginnings as a reading room in 1905, Easttown Library has played an important role in bringing people together and providing essential reading material. Although in-person activities may not be possible at this time, the library offers engaging virtual programs and provides easy access to current library materials through contactless pickup and our digital collections on OverDrive/Libby and Flipster. We also offer book bundles and continue to provide printing, copying, and faxing services. I am grateful to our talented library staff members who immediately created new ways to meet the challenges caused by the pandemic.

One outcome of this pandemic has been the dramatic increase in the use of our digital collection. From 2019 to 2020, Easttown’s share of OverDrive/Libby use grew by 34.5% to total 174,455 uses! Two grants totaling $15,500 helped the library meet this demand for digital e-materials: the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) CARES Grant and the 2020 Chester County Nonprofit Innovation & Resiliency Fund Grant. Another outcome is that staff members have become adept at virtual programming. In 2020, 13,568 people attended 590 Easttown Library programs, most of which were held on Zoom. Our library has been a lifeline, helping people feel connected in our current socially distant reality.

Thank you to our community partners and you who make all this possible. Here’s to a better 2021!

Sincerely,

Alan J. Silverman

A Message From Our Leadership | New Year. New Leadership.

We are excited to assume our new roles as the presidents of the Foundation Board and the Library Board of Trustees and look forward to building upon the solid foundation of our library’s service to the community. 2020 was challenging but also an incredible year demonstrating the collective impact of our community on our library. A record $125,255 was raised through our Annual Fund and our endowment is halfway toward our $2 million goal! We are grateful for the generosity of everyone who helped us reach these milestones. Through your gifts, you make it possible for our library to continue to be Easttown’s community center by enabling us to provide much needed resources and programming even during this pandemic.

2020 began with a memorable Barbara Robinson Author Visit with screenwriter Brad Ingelsby. Brad shared his journey of becoming a sought-after Hollywood screenwriter and provided the inside scoop on his new, soon-to-be released local project, Mare of Easttown, starring Kate Winslet.

Not long after this event, the library closed its doors to the public mid-March 2020 due to the pandemic. As a result, our creative team of library staff members, under Alan Silverman’s leadership, quickly transitioned many popular in-person programs and activities to virtual and Zoom presentations. Our staff continues to offer the same quality programming for all ages online, including live story times/literacy classes, MakerSpace events (coordinated with contactless pick-up of all necessary materials), conversational English meetings, chair and laughter yoga sessions, book clubs, and so much more. Online programs enabled our library to reach even more people and help them stay socially connected. This was especially evident during our annual STEM lecture for adults with paleontologist Dr. Kenneth Lacovara who attracted an audience from around the world.

Library staff also prioritized the acquisition of digital content on the OverDrive/Libby app, understanding its important role in providing an accessible source of library materials. Thanks to grant funding and your support as noted in the Letter from Our Library Director, we were able to purchase additional e-materials to ensure a greater selection for library users and to meet the dramatic surge in demand.

Now we are focused on moving forward and cannot wait until our library is able to safely reopen its doors to the public. We hope that you will enjoy reading and find inspiration in the pages of this Annual Report of Giving. Please consider renewing your commitment to our library by making a gift to the Annual and/or Endowment Fund. We have enclosed a gift reply envelope for your convenience or you may visit www.easttownlibrary.org to make a secure online contribution.

Sincerely,

Maryann O’ConorPresident, Easttown Library Foundation

For our 2020 Barbara Robinson Author Visit on February 22nd, Screenwriter Brad Ingelsby gave attendees an exclusive peak into producing and filming The Mare of Easttown, a limited HBO series with Kate Winslet set to be released in 2021. He also shared his journey to becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after screenwriters by A-list stars like Ben and Casey Affleck. His family and friends and a group of our donors warmly greeted the Berwyn native at a pre-lecture reception in his honor. We thank Marjorie Pinto-Leite and Carolyn Robinson, the daughters of Barbara Robinson, and our endowment donors who make it possible to offer this annual public event in memory of the beloved children’s author, former Library Trustee and 2008 Easttown Library Champion, Barbara Robinson.

Easttown Library Foundation Endowment Fund Donors Enriching Our Present & Securing Our Future

Former Foundation President Dennis P. Leeper (pictured above) and other like-minded Foundation Board members and library supporters had the foresight to establish our Endowment Fund in 2011. The endowment serves as a self-sustaining source of revenue for Easttown Library. Up to 5% of its year-end value may be used to support the library’s annual operating costs, programs, and/or capital needs. This year, our endowment fund grew to over $1 million – half-way towards our goal! Please consider helping our library reach the milestone of $2 million, while ensuring the future of our library as a vibrant community center.
