Dear Members of the Judson University Community,

For 12 years I have been blessed to witness substantial growth in our students through their academics, athletics, and most importantly, their walk with Christ. In this report, we recognize the extended Judson community’s contributions to achieve these goals.

At Judson University, we strive to provide our students with the finest Christian liberal arts education. As a result, we have ranked among the Midwest Top Tier of Colleges and Universities according to the U.S. News and World Report for the sixth year in a row. We are proud as an institution to provide over 60 majors and continue to expand on these offerings. One example of our expanded growth is our Christian Ministries major which offers concentrations in children’s ministries, adult ministries, missions, youth ministry and social justice ministry. Another example is a new accelerated 3-year business administration program which gives

A Word From Our President

students an opportunity to complete a fully accredited undergraduate degree in only 33 months. We have also revitalized our theatre program allowing students and the community to experience the performance arts at Judson University. Our art, design and architecture programs have been nationally recognized by the Higher Learning Commission, which makes Judson University the only Christian university to offer a fully accredited professional architecture degree program. Faith and service has always been an integral part of Judson. We provide many activities in which students might partake. One of the exciting opportunities that we offer ever year is mission projects served around the world. This year, students went to serve anywhere from Jackson, Miss., Dominican Republic, Haiti, Peru, Bahamas, Chicago, and right here in Elgin. Learning through short-term missions teaches students about servant leadership and more about the gift of giving, but above that, it encourages students to make missions a part of their future lives.

Another activity that we have on an every-other-day basis is our chapel worship programming. Chapel brings new life to students who may not know Christ and it strengthens student’s faith who alreadyknow Him in a personal way. Staying fiscally sound is also another important issue and we have done just that through our strong dedication to fiscal responsibility. As an institution for higher learning, we are proud to announce that we did not cut any funds from student aid that effected our long term investments during the recent economic downturn. Our primary concern was and always will be the students. Providing a high quality Christian liberal arts education at an affordable cost is the reason we provide financial aid to 90 percent of our students above and beyond government grants and loans.

Additionally, we made it imperative that no person working for Judson would be laid off due to the economy. While we sacrificed raises for faculty and took staff furloughs, being fiscally responsible and doing the right thing has paid off even in times of despair. As many universities struggled to make ends meet, Judson has been able to stay on budget, provide strong financial aid, and keep everyone on staff employed. Even with financial conditions tightening, we continue to expand the institution in several areas. Three new sports have emerged that connect more students in their walk with Christ. Cross country has started up strong again after a 12 year hiatus. The team has already won its first championships ever in just its second season. In addition, tennis has reemerged with a repaved tennis court ready to serve Judson athletes and the Elgin community. Golf has also been a new addition to Judson’s list of organized athletics. I am excited to see what the future of athletics will entail at Judson in the years to come. I thank you for your consistent dedication to Christian stewardship. It greatly impacts students in their academics, personal development, and in their walk with Christ. We pledge to remain responsible and accountable in all our investments here at Judson University.

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY Nathan Groenendal

Architecture Major, Class of 2010

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY

The Harm A. Weber Academic Center at Judson University is home to the

School of Art, Design and Architecture.

Nathan Groenendal, 22, was a great example of an architecture student at Judson University. The endless hours and long nights spent in studio, the notorious pranks in Wilson Hall, and the close relationships he established with his professors are all memories he will forever keep in his heart.

One of the lessons he would pass down to any future architecture major would be: “To get through the architecture program here at Judson, you need to have that drive, that hardworking mentality, and to also truly enjoy what you do. It may sound a bit vague and cliché, but having this mentality in anything you do sets yourself up for success,” said Nathan.

Living in Wilson hall for 4 years was something quite special. It offered Nathan a safe place to share his life experiences and to really express his relationship in Christ that enabled him to grow with others.

Another place he loved to go was his studio classes. The smaller class sizes allowed Nathan to bounce ideas from students and professors alike and the time he was fortunate enough to have with Professor Ian Hoffman and Professor John Barie made the classes all the more worth while.

What inspired Nathan to gain a new perspective in international architecture was the Europe tour that takes place every summer. One of the things that boggled his mind was the fact that people thousands of years ago had skills to sculpt buildings that stand to this day. This trip really opened his eyes and gave him new inspiration in his architecture work.

With his studies being complete, Nathan plans to own his own firm someday somewhere outside the United States focusing mainly on single family residential homes. His memories in studio with his professors and colleagues, his roommates in Wilson Hall and the long hours spent in studio will forever stay with him, as well as his faith in Christ Jesus.

Dr. Brenda Buckley-Hughes

Chair of the Worship Arts program and Professor of Communication Arts

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY

The sight of Professor Brenda Buckley-Hughes walking around campus with a delightful smile on her face and a seemingly content spirit amid her busy schedule is not something uncommon to see on a day-to-day basis at Judson University. It is obvious that she simply enjoys what she does.

“My favorite aspect of Judson is being able to earn a living by learning and sharing it with others in ways that help them grow; seeing it affect their lives,” commented Dr. Buckley-Hughes.

Teaching freshman in particular is what Dr. Brenda Buckley-Hughes loves. She enjoys helping students broaden their horizons of study, enhancing their overall worldview on endless topics. Helping to change people’s lives between the state of adolescence and adulthood can be one of the most rewarding experiences for a professor like Dr. Buckley-Hughes.

Dr. Buckley-Hughes also knows from first-hand experience that the power of prayer is truly astonishing. In March of 2009 she underwent major brain surgery that threatened her speech. This was very devastating for her and her family, especially since it could have had a direct effect on her career as Chair of

the Worship Arts Program and a Professor of Communication Arts. Judson faculty and students prayed for a successful surgery throughout her entire stay at the hospital. Everyone continued praying for her speedy recovery and sure enough, through God’s healing power, Dr. Buckley-Hughes was back at work doing what she loves.

Judson University is proud to be home to such dedicated faculty like Dr. Brenda Buckley-Hughes that serve God’s kingdom so faithfully.

The Marjorie Hall Thulin Fine Arts Performance Hall is located in the

Alice and Edward Thompson Center at Judson University.

Burma Society$10,000 AND OVERAfter being ordered out of India by the British East India Company, Adoniram Judson and his wife moved to Burma, a nation known to be impermeable to Christian evangelism. Determined to reach the people of Burma, Judson and his wife set out to familiarize and acclimate themselves with the Burmese culture. He held his first public meeting in April of 1819 and fifteen men attended. By the time Adoniram died, he left the Bible (fully translated in the Burmese language), 100 churches, and over 8,000 believers. Membership in the Burma Society represents a dedication to furthering the Kingdom of God through the work done here at Judson University.

Ann “Nancy” Judson Guild$5,000 - $9,999On February 5, 1812, Adoniram Judson married Ann Hasseltine. Throughout his ministry Ann proved to be an incredible model of supreme courage and loyalty, facing trial after trial alongside her husband, as well as facing innumerable hardships on her own while Adoniram was imprisoned for 17 months. After only 14 years of marriage, Ann died on October 24, 1826 at the young age of 37. Membership in the Ann “Nancy” Judson Guild represents a loyalty and commitment to the University as the church at work in higher education.

President’s Society$2,500 - $4,999To date, Judson University has been overseen by five different presidents. History has shown that each one of the five believed that where people come from isn’t nearly as important as where they are going. With such a mindset, leadership is action, not position. In the Judson administration, it is commitment--not authority-- that has always produced results. As a member of the President’s Society, donors are commended for their contribution to the furthering of those results in the lives of our students at Judson University.

William Ward Guild$1,000 - $2,499On September 6, 1812, Adoniram Judson and his wife, Ann, converted to the Baptist denomination and were baptized by immersion, now as believers, in Calcutta by an English missionary associate named William Ward. As a member of the William Ward Guild, donors are recognized for their generous financial support of Judson University’s mission to equip students to be fully developed, responsible persons who serve in their personal relationships, local communities and the world as effective leaders and ambassadors.

Sarah Judson Guild$500 - $999In April of 1835, after having completed the Burmese translation of the Bible, Adoniram Judson was married for the second time to Sarah Hall Boardman, widow of fellow missionary George Boardman, after the death of his first wife, Ann. Adoniram and Sarah had eight children together, five of whom survived to adulthood. The faithful commitment of those in the Sarah Judson Guild to the mission of Judson University is a testimony to their commitment to God at work in the lives of students as they are equipped both spiritually and academically.

Emily Judson Guild$250 - $499On June 2, 1846, Adoniram Judson married for the third time to writer Emily Chubbuck, after the death of his first wife, Ann, and his second wife, Sarah. Judson had commissioned Emily to write memoirs for Sarah. Membership in the Emily Judson Guild reflects a commitment to the long-term work being done at Judson University and it is because of the faithful giving of these committed individuals that this work is able to be done.

Sower’s Guild$100 - $249John 4:34-36 says, “‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, “Four months more and then the harvest”? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.’” The faithful giving of those in the Sower’s Guild represents the sowing of seeds in the lives of our students here at Judson University.

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY Sandra Lee Blood

Psychotherapist and Friend of Judson University

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY

Sandra Lee Blood still remembers the mornings when her granddaughter would leave home each day to commute to school at Judson University. Living just five minutes away from campus gave Amy Lawrence the chance to always get to school on time. What brought Amy to Judson was her opportunity to play basketball on a scholarship.

On January 22, 2003, Amy married Kevin Lapinski and soon awaited their first baby. In November of 2004 she and her daughter Maison Raeya passed away due to pregnancy complications. This devastated Sandra who decided to make an impact through her grief by setting up a scholarship fund in memory of her granddaughter.

“I didn’t know how I would get through the healing process. Amy was a big part of my life, and I will never forget her. Sponsoring students who play sports is one way I’m doing this. I am grateful for the opportunity Judson gave her to play basketball. I have seen the change that Judson makes in students through sports; it gives them an opportunity to find their faith in Christ here, and I want to support that,” Sandra reflects.

The experience of watching the current recipient of the Amy Lawrence Lapinski scholarship grow spiritually, academically, and athletically has been therapeutic for Sandra, and it has made a positive impact on the life of the student receiving the scholarship.

Today, Sandra works locally as a psychotherapist while she continues to cope with the loss of her granddaughter. The joy she finds in her support of student scholarship funding at Judson University provides her with a sense of peace and comfort to continue serving Christ one day at a time.

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY Gayle & Skip Gianopulos

Judson Alumna, Class of 1988

2009 ANNUAL REPORT • • • • JUDSON UNIVERSITY

Life at Judson University was a great experience for Gayle (Medina) Gianopulos. She loved the small beautiful campus and the warmth that she felt from the students and faculty. Professor Ted Hsieh, an associate professor of psychology for 41 years, helped lay Gayle’s foundation by leading her to discover that majoring in psychology would be a good fit. It was at Judson that Gayle realized a career working with people, especially children, would be the right path to pursue. The love and grace that she felt at Judson gave her a strong sense of belonging which helped her grow and prosper.

After graduating from Judson in 1988, Gayle went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Social Work and later found work as a school social worker at a K-8 school district for 12 years. During her tenure at the school, Gayle met Skip Gianopulos, fell in love, and got married in 1993. They now have four girls, Stephanie (9), Jessica (7), Allison (6), and Cassidy (3).

During her period at Judson, Gayle managed to babysit for local families, including a 4 year old boy with Down syndrome. She grew very attached to him, often bringing him to campus to hang out. Little did she know that this experience with the little boy would resurface as a precious memory 16 years later. You see, Gayle and Skip are the proud parents of two girls, Jessica and Cassidy, who have Down syndrome. Shortly after

Jessica’s birth, Gayle reached out to other local families that also had a child with Down syndrome and within a few short months, Gayle and Skip partnered with four other families to form GiGi’s Playhouse, a non-for-profit organization that promotes awareness of Down syndrome. That dream has grown to six other playhouses throughout the country with two more opening soon.

Reminiscing back to her college years, she finds that it was the faculty, staff, and students who were most important to her. In her heart, the changing experiences, goofy jokes, and life lessons that she had learned from those people have all contributed to her growth that has made her the person she is today. Keeping her friendships alive and intact has strengthened Gayle and has been a source of love, support, and encouragement throughout the years.

The Herrick Chapel is located at the heart of the Judson University

campus and is the site for numerous speakers, concerts and theatre

performances each year.
