Holy Day of Obligation

Our diocesan custom is that Marriages Within or Without Mass are not celebrated on Sundays.

Marriage Within Mass may be celebrated.

Whenever Marriage Within Mass is celebrated, the Ritual Mass “The Celebration of Marriage” is used with sacred vestments of the color white or of a festive color. (Order of Celebrating Matrimony, second edition, [hereafter OCM] 34)

A Marriage within the Mass of the Day may be celebrated. Ritual Masses are connected to the celebration of certain Sacraments or Sacramentals. They are prohibited on Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, on Solemnities, on the days within the Octave of Easter, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day), on Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week, and furthermore due regard is to be had for the norms set out in the ritual books or in the Masses themselves. (GIRM, 372)

On those days listed in nos. 1-4 of the Table of Liturgical Days, the Mass of the Day is used with its own readings, with inclusion of the Nuptial Blessing and, if appropriate, theproperformulaforthefinalblessing. If, however, during Christmas and Ordinary Time, the parish community participates in a Sunday Mass during which Marriage is celebrated, the Mass of the Sunday is used.

Nevertheless, since a Liturgy of the Word adapted for the celebration of Marriage has a great impact in the handing on of catechesis about the Sacrament itself and about the duties of the spouses, when the Mass “For the Celebration of Marriage” is not said, one of the readings may be taken from the texts provided for the celebration of Marriage. (OCM, 34)

CLARIFICATION OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

VS EUCHARISTIC EXPOSITIONAll parishes should be open to the faithful for some period of time each day

for Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle (canon 937); however, Adoration is not the same as Exposition.

SYMBOL KEY

Perpetual Adoration is continuous prayer by one or more persons in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle.

If an individual misses their scheduled time, there is no problem - the tabernacle remains secure, and may be unattended.

All parishes should be open to the faithful for some period of time each day for Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle.

Perpetual Adoration requires permission from the pastor.

Solemn Exposition (a.k.a. Forty Hours Devotion) is encouraged for parishes once a year, and need not be continuous, nor for exactly forty hours.

Solemn Exposition may be interrupted, but if interruption must take place, it must be at previously scheduled times, and these may not be scheduled more than twice in a 24-hour period.

Covering the monstrance or ciborium with a cloth or drape to temporarily interrupt Solemn Exposition is not foreseen by the Church, and is prohibited.

Perpetual Exposition is continuous prayer by two or more persons in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the altar in a monstrance or ciborium.

There must absolutely never be periods when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance or ciborium on the altar and there is no one present for adoration.

Perpetual Exposition is generally seen as most appropriate in a religious community; if it must take place in a parish, it should be in a chapel completely separate from the main body of the church.

Perpetual Exposition requires permission from the diocesan bishop.

Perpetual Exposition may be interrupted, but if interruption must take place, it must be at previously scheduled times, and these may not be scheduled more than twice in a 24-hour period.

Covering the monstrance or ciborium with a cloth or drape to temporarily interrupt Perpetual Exposition is not foreseen by the Church, and is prohibited.

Exposition, whether Perpetual or Solemn, may includenotonlymomentsofsilentreflectionbut structured prayer services, music, or other elements of liturgical prayer.

Exposition during Mass in the same church is prohibited.

CANDLEMAS DAY The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is one of only two liturgical celebrations which call for a procession of the faithful into church carrying lighted candles - the other being the Easter Vigil. The faithful gather outside the church (or for pastoral reasons, inside the church), and after their candles are lit, the priest blesses them:

"O God, source and origin of all light, ...sanctify with your blessing these candles, which we are eager to carry in praise of your name, so that, treading the path of virtue, we may reach that light which never fails." The Procession follows. (RM, Proper of Saints, February 2)

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

PALM SUNDAY PROCESSION AND/OR SOLEMN ENTRANCE The memorial of Christ's entrance into Jerusalem takes place at all Palm Sunday Masses, by means of the procession (from another smaller church, or some other location, to the principal church) or the solemn entrance (from just outside the doors, or inside the principle church) before Mass. The solemn entrance, but not the procession, may be repeated before other Masses that are usually celebrated with a large gathering of people. Holding branches in their hands, the faithful gather. While the Priest approaches the appointed place, the antiphon Hosanna or another appropriate chant is sung. Then the blessing of branches and the proclamation of the Gospel of the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem take place. After the Gospel, the Priest processes solemnly with the ministers and the faithful through the church to the sanctuary, while the responsory As the Lord entered or another appropriate chant is sung.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY The primary celebration consists of the celebration of the Second Sunday of Easter. The homily should focus on the scriptural readings of the day, which are centered on the forgivenessofsinsandGod’sinfinitemercy.

Easter Vigil Masses are not to begin before 7:30 p.m.

This ceremony for the blessing and commissioning of catechists is intended to take place at the Eucharistic liturgy on Catechetical Sunday. If this is not

possible, the blessing and commissioning may be celebrated at Mass at another time, or it may be used outside of Mass, perhaps with the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours or at a simple commissioning service. “Order for the Blessing of Those Appointed as Catechists” can be found in the Book of Blessings [BB], no. 491.
