Page 2 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Desk of Father Raaser
It seems like we missed autumn this year. We had a summer that just wouldn’t quit. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the summer heat, but I really enjoy all 4 seasons of the year, for each season has a special quality and beauty to it. I like the transition from the summer heat to the winter’s cold. Transitions are important and very necessary.
This Thursday is a commemoration of a transition; it is the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, known more popularly as All Souls Day. As I have been writing these past two weeks about remembering our beloved dead at Mass, this is the day of the year, when the Church offers Mass for all the Faithful Departed, especially those for whom no one prays.
C.S. Lewis wrote this about Purgatory:
“Our souls demand Purgatory, don’t they? Would it not break the heart if God said to us, ‘It is true, my son, that your breath smells and your rags drip with mud and slime, but we are charitable here and no one will upbraid you with these things, nor draw away from you. Enter into the joy’? Should we not reply, ‘With submission, sir, and if there is no objection, I’d rather be cleaned first.’ ‘It may hurt, you know’ – ‘Even so, sir.’ ” Purgatory is a gift of God to us sinners. The purifying and burning love of God makes us worthy and “clean” to enter into His Presence. To know that it is not just heaven or hell, but we can go to a place of transition, rid ourselves of the effects of our sins so as to enjoy for all eternity the loving face of God.
We need to always remember no one can enter the Wedding Feast of the Lamb without being clean (holy) and well-dressed (prepared). Remember what happened to the guest in the Parable of a few Sundays ago, who did not put on the wedding garment offered to him!
We must be ready for the day the invitation comes to us. For a Christian, death should be no stranger, we should experience a bit of dying each day, dying and rising in our relationships with God and one another. Death should never blindside a Christian. How many times did the Lord tell parables to us about being ready for the moment of our death? Death is not reserved just for the elderly, or infirmed.
We have all been redeemed (bought back to God by Christ’s death on the Cross), but our salvation needs to be worked out by cooperating with God’s grace, the sacraments, prayer and penance and sacrifice. Heaven is not the reward for a good life (as if we’d earned it) but it is the out flowing of an earthly life well lived in friendship with God. But as we all know, we don’t stay perfectly clean and neat. Some days are rougher than others to stay out of the mud!
And so the other miracle of Purgatory and of which All Souls reminds us is that we – the living, the Church on earth can still help, even fight for our deceased friends and relatives. We do this by our prayers.
We as Christians are not left simply to mourn the dead; we are not simply left to remember and cherish them, though these are most fitting. Rather we can still embrace them in love and aid and even accompany them on their journey to the Feast. Pray for the dead every day; this great power has been given to you. And hopefully, there will be people to pray for us.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. Amen

Readings for Next Sunday
THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Malachi 1:14b—2:2b, 8-10 This passage from Malachi denounces the laxity and unfaithfulness of the people and especially of the priests, who failed in their duties to God and their neighbors.
Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 Paul reminisces about his extremely happy and successful visit with the Thessalonians. He praises them once again for their immediate and open acceptance of his message as truly the word of God.
Gospel: Matthew 23:1-12 In a strongly worded message, Jesus again rebukes the Pharisees for the hypocritical ostentation and love of honor and position. He reminds the people and the disciples that the truly greatest one is the one who serves others. He ends with the words, ”Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”
