November 2019 2020 Country Ham Project The country ham has been a food tradition in Kentucky and throughout the southeast for hundreds of years. The Kentucky 4-H Country Ham project continues the tradition of the country ham. Your 4-Her will cure two hams of their own, with the opportunity to sell one, both, or neither of the hams during our annual livestock sale. Participants learn patience, responsibility, perseverance, and more through this project. The project begins in the cold winter months beginning in January and ends in August at the Kentucky State Fair, where the hams are judged by members of the Kentucky Country Ham Producers and the students present a 3 to 5 minute speech on the project in front of two judges. Throughout the project the 4-Hers learn about food production and how the country ham fits into Kentucky’s food heritage. 3 to 5 minutes long, for those 9 to 13 years old

5 to 7 minutes long, for those 14 to 19 years old

Use of note cards is optional NO VISUAL AIDS ARE ACCEPTED DRAMATIC READINGS, DRAMATIC MONOLOGUES

AND RECITATION OF POEMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPED.

SINGLE DEMONSTRATION

Junior Demonstration is ages 9-13 years of age as of January 1st Senior Demonstration is ages 14-19 years of age as of January 1st Time limit for demonstrations is 5-15 minutes

4-H’ers are eligible to enter only ONE demonstration. This includes horse and egg demonstrations. NO LIVE ANIMALS of any size are permitted

TEAM DEMONSTRATIONS

Team Demonstrations are permitted and will follow the same rules and guidelines of the single participant demonstration.

2-4 people may comprise as a team. Each person mush have a significant speaking and presentation portion.

ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST BE IN THE SAME AGE CATEGORY (Junior or Senior). NO HORSE OR EGG DEMONSTRATIONS ARE PERMITTED. THESE CONTEST ARE HELD AT SEPARTE

School Programs Our program assistants have been having so much fun visiting schools and classrooms across Fayette county and leading educational lessons. Robin has been hard at work doing fruit batteries, exploring how light travels, magnets, and bird beak adaptations! Morgan has been leading lessons on fruit batteries, water sheds, robotics, and leading a school-based Cloverbud club! Rachel has been teaching about entomology, animal adaptations, potential/kinetic energy, and fruit batteries!

If your school does not benefit from 4-H supplemental programming, call the extension office and speak to a program assistant to set up a meeting! (859) 257-5582.
