State, county, and city officials were joined by local residents, many of whom biked or walked to the grand opening cer-emony of the Turkey River Recreational Corridor land trail and bridge, located between Clermont and Elgin.

Over 100 people pedaled or walked their way to the official grand opening of the Turkey River Recreational Corridor (TRRC) land trail and bridge located be-tween Clermont and Elgin in August 2012. In welcoming those in attendance to the ceremony, TRRC Director Robin Bostrom reiterated that the local trail is the backbone of the growing trail system in northeast Iowa and beyond. She explained that current and future plans call for links to Elkader and the Motor Mill historic site; a recreational trail between the City of Fayette and the Volga River Recreation Area (VRRA); a Fayette-to-West Union trail; EVENT (Echo Valley Environmental Nature Trail) extension to West Union and

Major step celebrated in bridging region togetherElgin; the Decorah trail system; and the MRT (Mississippi River Trail) to the east; and via the Prairie Farmer Trail (Calmar to Cresco) to the Root River branch of the Minnesota trail system. TRRC chairperson Vicki Rowland quoted words of per-sonal inspiration from for-mer U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in saying, “’We have fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever received, and each one must do his part if we wish to show that the nation is worthy of its good fortune.’ “As Teddy Roosevelt said we have the ‘glorious heritage’ of a water trail on the Turkey River, which attracts hun-dreds of sports enthusiasts weekly,” she added. “And now, today, we have the glorious heritage of a multipurpose trail, and a safe bridge to cross that river when walking, jogging, or biking.” On behalf of the event’s guest speakers, Rowland expressed her gratitude to the following people for their commitment to the project: Fayette County Trails Committee; Fayette County Conservation Board and its director, Rod Marlatt; Fayette County Secondary Roads and County Engineer J.D. King; Fayette County Economic Development’s past and current directors and staff members, Robin Bostrom, Karla Organist, Carol Weidemann, and Bill Ziegler; Fayette County and Clayton County Supervisors; may-ors, city council members, and community-minded citi-zens of Elgin, Clermont, and Elkader; Valley Community School Superintendent Cathy Molumby and school board members; private donors; area newspapers; Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission, including Rochelle Howe, Chelsea Welch, and Organist; Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) staff members and director Lora Friest; Vision Iowa Board; Iowa Great Places Board; Trees Forever; and everyone who ac-tively uses the trail.

“You each (trail supporters) went out to promote and get grant funding for this project,” Fayette County Supervisor chairperson Jeanine Tellin later added. “I can see that each of you dreamed bigger and dreamed larger to see that it hap-pened.” “You should each applaud yourself for being here today,” agreed Roger Thomas, state legislator and Elkader Economic Development/Main Street Elkader director. “You can see the tenacity of the folks that saw the vision in this (project). “We still have a long way to go, though, because this trail needs to dissect itself outside of this area,” he continued. On a related note, Thomas reported that the TRRC wa-ter trail recently received a boost with the awarding of a $300,000 grant for the development of a whitewater course in Elkader. He explained this course will tie in with similar projects in Charles City and other northeast Iowa commu-nities. “We will make this region the best place for whitewater courses in the United States. That’s how big this (project) will be,” he stressed. Fayette County Conservation Director Rod Marlatt closed the ceremony in expressing his appreciation to all the public officials, local residents, and his family members who provided continuing support and helped assure the comple-tion of the project. Quoting his grandfather, Marlatt concluded, “’We (soci-ety) won’t be remembered for any great advancements in

The project included the publication of water trail map, and the installation of way-finding signs, kiosks, and river-access signs. The trail was officially dedicated as a State Water Trail in July 2011. Fayette County’s Clothesline of Quilts includes 70 blocks hung on barns, corn cribs and other structures. The Clothesline of Quilts consists of four driving trails across Fayette County in Northeast Iowa, that highlight colorfully designed quilt blocks – most are 8-ft. by 8 ft. in size. In between each site, motorists will encounter some of Fayette County’s most beautiful countryside.

The Fayette County Speedway Racing Committee has released its tentative schedule for the 2013 season. Once again, not only race fans but the general public, especially families, won’t want to miss out on one of the biggest en-tertainment bargains available across the state. The current 17-week race schedule at one of the most traditionally revered tracks in Iowa by drivers and fans alike will still only include a $5 admission charge during its regular race nights. Children 11 and under are admitted free. “We have experienced larger crowds and more cars in the pits over the past couple of years, and this year we believe will be no different,” said Jim Granger, Race Committee secretary/treasurer, last week. “We won’t truly know until after the first couple of weeks into the racing season, but from my conversations with interested individuals, I strongly believe that our fans will see an increase in race drivers and cars,” added Larry Nefzger, Race Committee vice-chairman. The weekly Friday night racing schedule officially gets underway May 3. Midseason championships are scheduled for June 21, and the season finale will be Aug. 23. The pits will be filled with USRA-sanctioned Stock Cars, B-Modifieds, Hobby Stock, and 4-Cylinder Flyers. Two-Man Cruisers and 600 Modified-Lites will take to the ¼-mile

Side-by-side racing action will return to Fayette County Speedway in West Union on Friday, May 3. The pits will be filled with USRA-sanctioned Stock Cars, B-Modifieds, Hobby Stock, and 4-Cylinder Flyers. Two-Man Cruisers and 600 Modified-Lites will take to the ¼-mile track on alternate weeks. Hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m., with the first green flag to drop at 7 p.m. every Friday night during the 2013 racing season.

track on alternate weeks. Hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m., with the first green flag to drop at 7 p.m. On behalf of the Race Committee, Nefzger and Granger both encouraged the public to attend a pair of special ben-efit nights at the Fayette County Speedway. Friday, May 10, will be a Memorial Night for the late Layne Schneider of Elgin. Nefzger explained that 4-Cylinder Class drivers will be introduced at intermission on May 10 as a salute to Schneider, who formerly raced in the division. The drivers will then enter the grandstand and pass their helmets through the crowd for donations. In addition to those monies raised, the Race Committee will donate their proceeds from that evening’s 50/50 drawing to Schneider’s family. Later, a Alzheimer’s Awareness Night will be held May 24. Additional information on this fundraiser and/or other special racing events throughout the racing season will be announced as details are made available. Granger noted that the annual Fayette County Fair races will be held Tuesday, July 23. Meanwhile, the return of the Corn Belt Clash is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 9. This will be a regular points night for all other participating classes. Nefzger reported that in an effort to renovate the grand-stand’s women’s restroom facilities in the future, the Race Committee at this time intends to donate the end-of-the-

Restoration of Burkard Riegel Blacksmith Shop The Burkard Riegel Blacksmith Shop, located along Highway 18 in Clermont, was an integral part of the community’s early economy and continues to be an important part of its history. Constructed in 1858, Clermont’s Village Blacksmith Shop was owned and operated by Burkard Riegel from 1931-1967. Riegel,

who emigrated from Germany, was known for his exceptional work shoeing horses as well as molding iron railings and decorative posts for

porches and patios. The historic shop still houses rings along the wall where the horses were tied up in order to fix their shoes. Riegel is credited for being very creative in changing his work as the demands of society changed. The self-viewing shop and all of the blacksmith’s original tools have been donated to the Historical Society. Found amongst the artifacts was an old desk and a certificate to Riegel for starting the first Boy Scout Troop in Clermont. The local Historical Society has completed Phase I of its rehabilitation of the historic building. Using an $8,000 grant from the Fayette County Community Foundation, as well as private donations and the Clermont Historical Society’s savings, Phase I began on the building in October 2011. This phase included shingling the roof, removing and replacing rotted window frames, installing new support beams, replacing the side door and several areas of outside brick, as well as fixing other structural issues. The funding allowed for a historical trade carpenter and mason to restore the original features of the building. Thanks to a few community members, the mason was able to restore the building using matching bricks. The next phase in the project includes electrical work and the restoration of the back storeroom. The storeroom will eventually house shelves to hold original artifacts from the blacksmith shop. In order to begin the project, many of the artifacts were moved from the shop to a storage location. The Clermont Historical Society will move those pieces back into the historic building in order to display the shop in as close to its original state as possible. The items will be labeled for visitors to easily imagine the daily workings of Riegel. Once the blacksmith shop project is finished, the Clermont Historical Society plans to undertake the restoration of two other important pieces of Clermont history, the brick yard and the depot.

Local residents are invited to peek into the world of creativity exhibited by local artists by viewing new work, demonstrations, and works in progress during the 16th annual Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour Friday-Sunday, Oct. 11-13. The local Artists’ Studio Tour takes place each October. The self-guided driving tour includes more than 50 arti-sans who demonstrate, describe and sell their art direct-ly to guests inside their private art studios. This “behind the scenes” bluff country tour is all within 20 miles of Decorah. The Tour is specially scheduled for the participants to enjoy the fall color and travels along winding gravel roads, for a behind-the-scenes view into the artists’ per-sonal workspace. Many attendees traveled from as far as Chicago and Omaha last year. The 2012 Tour featured 53 artists at 43 locations. Estimated 2000 visitors annually from as many as 15 states and 2 countries have been reported as attending from past Tours. According to the Travel Association of America, Cultural travelers spend more per trip than the average U.S. traveler. The Studio Tour brings economic benefit to the entire northeast Iowa area. The event is free-to-the-public and self-supporting, funded by artist entry fees, donations, and sponsors. The 2013 brochures will be available around May. To obtain a brochure with the Tour map or for other area Tourism information, call Winneshiek County Convention and Visitors Bureau at (563) 382-2023 or 1-800-463-4692 or email. For more complete information about the artists and ongoing events, view the official Tour web site at www.iowaarttour.com.

Rev. S.D. Helms organized the first Lima Congregational Church in 1857 with his wife, and Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Hyde and their daughter, Esther. As the community grew, the church membership grew to about 20 members. They met in a small cabin. Later, the church was disbanded. A United Brethren Church was formed, but that also fell by the wayside. In 1882, the Lima Church Builders Association was formed with 67 members. The original church building was 30 ft. by 40 ft., finished in September 1882 and stood on land deeded to the church by Winslow Stearns. It had originally been planned for the courthouse when it was thought Lima would be named the county seat. When the votes were counted, Lima fell short by 35 votes. The church was heated by wood stoves until 1910. The Rev. Tom Jones held revival meetings, boosting the membership. In 1914, a 20 ft. by 24 ft. addition was added to the east side. Four stained-glass windows were installed with the names of four early members: Hensley, Helms, Henry and Stearns. The belfry and bell, donated by church members, were also installed in 1914. Pastors during that period included John Dawson, the Rev. Harrington and T.O. Kent. In the early 1940s, the Rev. G.W. Ukena, pastor of Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union, conducted Sunday evening services at Lima, continuing until 1949. Since then, there have been occasional Easter sunrise services and outdoor summer services. Memorial Day

services, with Wadena American Legion Post #631, providing military color guard, are held every May. At some time, maybe the 1940s, the ladies began a tradition serving a dinner of creamed chicken and homemade baking powder biscuits. All the ladies butchered and cooked the homegrown chickens, taking the meat off the bones and making the gravy. The biscuits were made in homes close to the church, with a runner stationed at each place. Sometime in the 1970s, the dinners were changed to be held in the fall to correspond with the pretty fall leaves in the Volga River Valley, and the menu changed to sandwiches, homemade pies and ice cream. Lima Leaf Day is still held the first Sunday in October, serving over 600, with the proceeds used to pay for mowing of the Lima Cemetery. The Lima Ladies Aid has raffled a quilt, some made by the goup, and an afghan each year, and sold cookbooks, postcards, poem books and note cards to pay for the upkeep of the Lima Church. Until 1986 this was done with no water at the church. Area farmers filled 10-gallon milk cans with water and hauled them to the church, first with tractor and wagon, then pickups. By the 1980s the need to replace the outdoor toilets with indoor restrooms became imminent if the dinner tradition was to be continued. In 1986, a 10 ft. by 20 ft. addition was built onto the northeast corner of the church. A well was drilled, and water was piped into the church.

When is a Trout Fee required? You must pay a trout fee to legally fish for or possess trout if you are a resident or nonresident required to have a fishing license. If you are a resident or a non-resident under 16 years of age, you must pay a trout fee to fish for or possess trout. Or, you may fish for trout with a licensed adult who has paid the trout fee, in such a case you must limit your combined catch to the daily limit for one person.

New hunting and fishinglicenses available Hunters and anglers have new licenses from which to choose in 2013. An annual resident hunting/fishing/habitat combo li-cense is available for $47. A three-year angler’s special for Iowa residents is available for $53, while a three-year resi-dent hunting license is available for $86. In addition, a bonus fishing line license for both residents and nonresidents is available for $12. A regular license al-lows two fishing lines in Iowa’s waterways. The new license offerings were developed based on re-sults from a license buyer survey that helped the DNR iden-tify customer needs.  The traditional Iowa hunting and fishing license fees remain unchanged for 2013. The last increase for a hunt-ing license was in 2002, and for a fishing license was 2003. Vendor fees were increased and passed on to the license buyer in 2010 to help offset the cost of developing the sec-ond-generation electronic license system for Iowa.
