2020 ANNUAL 2020 ANNUAL REPORTREPORT

2

There is no doubt that 2020 has been a challenging year at every level of Subbies rugby with clubs, players, coaches, administrators and our hard working volunteers being tested in ways that we might have thought unlikely 12 months ago.

But with the support and commitment of our clubs and our Union, we made sure there would be some rugby this season. Back in mid-March, a working return date was set as July 4th and it turns out our planning was only slightly out, with the half season commencing two weeks later.

What perhaps surprised the Board and our Executive Director Tim Richards, when announcing the return to play date, was not only the fact that our player numbers were high, but that we were able to welcome two new clubs, the Sydney Harbour Oysters and the Combined Services team to Subbies.

Thanks must go to all our clubs who not only took an innovative approach to the season but complied so well with the restrictions imposed on community sport, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

It was an outstanding effort and we recognise that many clubs took a financial hit with the restriction on canteen sales and through costs already incurred. But our competition numbers were impressive – 49 clubs participated this year, fielding 163 teams over six divisions with 550 games played, 63 finals decided and 21 premierships awarded. Thank you to all those who made it happen.

Subbies will take many lessons learned from this year into season 2021. Change and innovation must be part of our future and there will be a need to do some things differently.

We warmly welcomed Cluch TV to Subbies, and they are here to stay. This year proved, in the most unlikely of circumstances, that broadcasting Subbies matches at all Divisional levels attracts viewers. More than one million minutes of Subbies finals alone were viewed on the platform and more is to come in developing that partnership next year.

Our Friday night final series was a sensational night out at Eastern Suburbs, under lights, a party atmosphere and a surface that encouraged free flowing rugby even with some light rain and the C-19 restrictions. We’ll encourage more clubs to consider playing regular season games under lights on Friday’s, especially Colts games.

Our season is now less likely to all finish over one or two weekends as we look to hold the finals series staggered over a number of weeks and played at different venues than usual, all being lessons learned from this year.

The Union is also looking to revive a new mid-season representative game on a stand-alone weekend to encourage greater mixing of club players, coaches and supporters in a loosely geographical, Barbarian-style, North vs South match for both grade and colts players.

We’re looking to offer sessions to help clubs who may need advice with recruitment, coaching, and administration, plan for new competitions such as a possible tournament of 10’s rugby for our women’s teams, and a promotion to increase playing numbers.

And while the recruitment program for referees was planned for this year, we’re aiming to re-visit that in 2021, thanks to the support of one of our great partners, the Rugby Club Foundation.

Looking back on our year I want to thank all who contributed at every level. Congratulations to our Premiership clubs and to the Cowboy Cup winner Mosman, with the outcome of this prestigious award not decided until the day of the Division 1 Grand Finals.

In a tough year a number of our clubs had standout seasons including Drummoyne, winning the Division 1 club championship and the Kentwell Cup, Hunters Hill outstanding in Division 2, Newport a real force in Division 3 winning three grand finals and the club championship and Western Raptors a similar record in Division 4.

The Sydney Oysters and Manly Savers were premiers in Divisions 5 & 6 and Chatswood (Radford) and Balmain (Halligan) each enjoyed great success this year.

Thank you to Tim Richards and Tom Chadwick for all the hard work and long hours that have gone into this year, to the Board for all the support in a very difficult time, to the Judiciary and Committee members who give tirelessly and a special thanks to all our clubs, players and volunteers who made this year happen.

We all showed the resilience needed to get our competition working this year and having adapted, changed and worked hard in a very tough year, we can all look forward to a new and successful season 2021.

Board Meeting Attendance

Annual reports require you to look back over the year that was. Having to do so for Season 2020 was not something I was relishing. Revisiting such a disrupted, anxiety filled time seemed like a chore. But this year is worthy of study. It showed how resilient the Subbies community is, how willing and able we are to adapt and work together, how keen we were to play, to keep going, to make the best of a bad situation.Subbies Clubs, nearly without exception, right from the start of the lockdown in March, made it clear that if and when authorities allowed sport to recommence they would be ready. And indeed they were - enabling six divisions across 21 competitions to kick-off in July. The effort to stay engaged with club members, to understand and enforce myriad new rules and regulations, to satisfy authorities (and narky neighbours), and above all to keep players and officials safe, was immense - and that effort was undertaken by volunteers under their own covid induced work and family stresses. All involved should be very proud.Back in April it would have been easy, maybe even understandable, to pull the pin and say, “See you in 2021.” Some sports, even some rugby jurisdictions, did just that. That was never really considered by the Subbies Board. What the Board did have to consider however was a number of different season options, the financial impact on clubs, and the best way to clearly and succinctly communicate the storm of information blowing in from so many different sources and directions. On that last point I would like to record my personal thanks to Paul Doorn and Mark Green from NSW Rugby. Both were a source of accurate information and cool headedness. Two resources sometimes in short supply at certain points this year.I thank too, of course, the Subbies Board for being flexible, yet determined. Some nearly unthinkable decisions were taken this year (no fees! no spectators!), but all were done with one aim in mind – Subbies must get, and stay, on the paddock in 2020. My very great thanks in particular to Subbies Chairman, John Morrison. His leadership this year was outstanding, as was his always wise counsel.Once rugby was finally under way this year a little bit of normality returned to Subbies operations. I thank our volunteers, particularly the Judiciary members who Zoomed into weekly hearings. Unfortunately, a half season generated more than half the normal send-offs, so panel members were kept busy.A small operating loss was a pretty good result considering the covid impact to our operations. Finals gate takings were necessarily dramatically down, as was the income from team registrations and the value

of our Ausbil Australian Equities Fund investment. Government financial support, state and federal, needs to be acknowledged as contributing to that financial result. We have stated many times that we do not hold and build on our financial reserves for the sake of it. Those reserves give the Union the ability to subsidise clubs, and this year we did that in a massive way when it was most needed.Congratulations to our Club Champions - Drummoyne (Div 1), Hunters Hill (Div 2), Newport (Div 3), and Western Raptors stepping up and having a great year in Division Four. The Union was very pleased to have two clubs join us in what can hardly be described as the best circumstances for starting a club. The Sydney Harbour Oysters not only joined our ranks but blitzed the opposition in the Jeffrey Cup. Sydney Combined Forces also debuted in that competition. Both clubs are fine new Subbies members. The Union was deeply saddened at the passing of Jan Tricker in February. ‘Mrs T’ was the bedrock of Manly Savers Rugby Club - a legendary and beloved figure and 2018 recipient of the Service to Rugby Medal. It was decided not to hold the Presentation Night this year. Winners were recognized at their grand finals where possible and also at tonight’s AGM. I congratulate all the winners, particularly Drummoyne’s Tiger Parker for taking home the coveted Kentwell Medal. Our generous sponsors have partnered with us for many years now and we thank them for their ongoing support. The Rugby Club Foundation, Fusesport and Gilbert are part of our family and contribute immensely to Subbies Rugby. Tom Chadwick did a brilliant job as the Union’s competition administrator. It was Tom’s first year in the role, whilst continuing as the Referee Appointments Officer. A quick learner, always inquisitive and a hard worker, Tom has been a standout addition to our administrative team. Finally, to all club administrators, coaches, managers, volunteers and players – what an effort you all put in this year, above all years. It wasn’t easy, but the wonderful feedback and gratitude we got from the players surely makes it worthwhile and should bring home to all of us the vitality of sport - how important it is to the well-being of so many that the game continues, survives and thrives. We look forward to 2021 with anticipation, optimism and enthusiasm.
