MEET THE CANDIDATESCOMMISSION ON PROFESSIONAL ISSUES

Vanessa Barlow, MBA, MSN, RNView of the issues: 2020 has been identified as the Year of The Nurse, and what a year it has been . This year has been unprecedented when I consider things in my lifetime and never could have imagined where we are today . To experience a pandemic where nurses and other healthcare providers have to beg for PPE in order to care safely for the sickest of patients and minimize the risk of taking illness home to their own families . To see the ugly face of racism with the murder of citizens by those meant to protect and serve and then the injustice that follows such horrible acts of hatred tearing at the very core of humanity . Nurses being the most trusted profession must take the lead in the communities addressing the impact of these things on the lives of citizens across this nation to include consideration of the under-served populations who are negatively impacted by all of this weighing on the conscious of the good, decent and humane servant leaders . I want the opportunity to be at the table when decisions are made that impact the ability of the nursing profession to care for those in need of safe, humane and quality healthcare . We have a Charge to keep . Thanks for your consideration and support .

Courtney Edwards, DNP, RN, CNLView of the Issues: Education is a major part of the nursing process . When it comes to health literacy, nurses are tasked with identifying low health literacy patients and making sure they are educated adequately to care for themselves at home . However, this requires time which is scarce for nurses as well as skill . Often nurses only have one lesson regarding patient teaching in the foundations courses in school . After nursing school, they are expected to be the experts in patient teaching . Patient education is vital to ensure patients are able to take care of themselves at home and minimize readmissions and poorer outcomes . If elected to the COPI, I want to work on preparing nurses on how to be better patient educators by incorporating evidence-based toolkits and simulation .

Shelicia Ford, Dr.Shelicia Ford, RN,BSN,DNPView of the Issues: Staffing: Long before the pandemic, staffing shortages have been an issue for various health care settings . For some time now the 42 code of federal regulation has required hospitals that are certified to participate in Medicare to have staffing that supports patients’ needs . There are facilities that send nursing staff home or call them off for the shift to meet budgets . Therefore leaving nursing staff short, which results in them not providing the appropriate care necessary .

The ANA has approaches to address this staffing issue: Ensure RNs are not forced to work without orientation in units in which they are not adequately trained or experienced; Establish procedures for receiving and investigating complaints;

Allow the secretary of Health and Human Services to impose civil monetary penalties for each known violation; include whistleblower protections; and Require public reporting of staffing information .

I can assist the ASNA by becoming more familiar with the 42 code of federal regulation . We can establish partnerships with the hospitals/nurse managers/director of nursing, etc . in Alabama . With these partnerships, we can advocate for staffing by making all stakeholders aware of the regulations, and the approaches established by ANA to support staffing . We can provide resources from the ANA as needed . We could also inform our legislators of our findings of staffing and ask them to provide support .

Ernestine French, RNView of the Issues: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, our country’s healthcare system has been facing staff shortages and long working hours . Many of these issues occur in areas that are heavily populated with minorities . Issues of this nature have lead to nurses not being able to take care of their personal health, failing to meet patient expectations and creating workplace hazards/liabilities .

Laura Hart, MSN, CRNP - DNP in progressView of the Issues: I have been a nurse since completing my BSN at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1993 . My nursing background is critical care and emergency nursing . After completing my MSN and passing national Family Nurse Practitioner boards in 2004, I started my career as a nurse practitioner in the emergency department setting . Since that time, I have enjoyed many areas of part-time side employment in various practice settings, including primary care office coverage, urgent care office coverage, nursing home rounding, and hospitalist coverage . Administratively, I have served as the quality improvement lead for a county health department seeking to gain accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board and later served as project director for a Federally Qualified Health Center that had fallen out of grant compliance . Through these experiences I have maintained a primary interest in the subculture of nursing . When choosing a project for my Doctor of Nursing Practice program, the topics of interest to me were areas about nurses and the nursing profession, role transitions and mentorship, burnout, scope of practice issues, and vertical and horizontal violence in the workplace . These professional issues have strong potential to affect the care of patients . Therefore, I am interested in a seat on the Committee on Professional Issues to help address these serious concerns .

Jacquelyn Lambert-Davis, DNP, RNView of the Issues: Bullying in the workforce: As a Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) my role is to lead the future of nursing by advocating for, then evaluating the quality and safety of effective nursing practice. It is what I call a self- appointed watch dog of quality and safe nursing that is free of incivility. We provide leadership in nursing education by not only teaching but by being able to use Evidence Based Practice to move from the classroom to the broad room, to policy and political arenas to advocate for change, thus creating better outcomes for all nurses. Doing my course of study, I was trained to be an Educational Leader. I will bring my research on caring and the knowledge that I obtained from it to the role of Commission on Professional Issues. Building translational research capacity by moving this knowledge from its creation to the realization of the vision, thereby, decreasing Toxic Culture and Environment. Mentorship is a practice area that demonstrates giving back to help others. I have done this through tutoring and mentoring young nurses since 2006. I will continue to search out opportunities to mentor others thereby strengthening competent and caring nurses. Moreover, I would ensure that I embed a civil culture and a reflection of equality with whom I work.

Jo Ann Otts, DNP, RN, NEA-BCView of the Issues: 1. Social Justice remains a growing concern throughout the US, and social unrest threatens the safety of nurses as working as first responders in emergency or trauma units and traveling through areas of civil unrest.  If elected to the ASNA Commission on Professional Issues, I would advocate for nurse-led social justice and racial reconciliation initiatives through education, communication, and collaboration with diverse groups within our state and local communities.

2. Covid-19 has burdened the healthcare system, and the mental wellbeing of frontline nurses and nursepractitioners is a concern.  Frontline care providers may experience increased work hours and shifts, increased nurse to patient ratios, with prolonged exposure to COVID 19 positive patients whilebalancing personal and family wellbeing. If elected to the ASNA Commission on Professional Issues, Iwould seek to provide mental wellbeing training programs to all nurses in Alabama to increaseresistance (psychological immunity from critical events), resilience (ability to rebound frompsychological uneasiness) and recovery (ability to adapt and function) following critical events ordisasters.

3 . Natural Disasters resulting from hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and storms are a fact of life in Alabama, and our nursing workforce is disproportionately affected as essential healthcare workers, and often as first responders .  The impact is greater to nurses in rural communities due to the closeness of residents that crosses personal-professional boundaries, as well as limited resources .  If elected to the ASNA Commission on Professional Issues, I would support developing and implementing pre-disaster preparedness programs for nurses in rural communities . I strive to be the change that our state healthcare system needs and to help find a way to better the health challenges that the state of Alabama is facing including rising health-care costs, the need for a strong public health workforce, and persistent disparities among racial/ethnic minority groups and underserved populations .

Candace Pierce, DNP, RN, CNE, COIView of the Issues: In the last year, how we provide patient care has been drastically altered .  The care issues nurses are facing are unlike anything seen in the last 100 years . The emotional burdens of our profession have continued to increase . Nurses are struggling with fear, anxiety, PTSD, and emotional and physical fatigue . The mental health of our front-line healthcare workers must not be forgotten . Mental health affects all aspects of our patient care responsibilities, leads to compassion fatigue,  and a loss of an already short staffed nursing workforce . Novice nurses are also struggling with an ever-expanding practice gap that has grown exponentially as nursing schools switched from a clinical setting to a virtual setting . These are two major professional issues that have adverse effects on our profession . It will be imperative to advocate for our workforce’s mental health and find ways we can minimize the practice gap of our onboarding nurses .

Mandy Kisor Roberts, MSN, RN, MHA (District 3)View of the Issues: Battle fatigue was a term coined during World War II regarding the mental health of soldiers at war . This term has been replaced with combat stress reaction . Combat stress reaction causes fatigue, delayed reaction time, among other symptoms . Even before the pandemic, I feel nurses were suffering from burnout . In the midst, I perceive nurses are enduring battle fatigue . Now, more than ever, nurses require self-help resources in the maintenance of their mental health . Nurses are known for their adaptability and caring nature, but it is past time for nurses’ mental health to be nurtured and programs developed for earlier identification of mental illness to promote timely intervention .

Denise Robertson, MSN, RN, CNLView of the Issues: The upcoming retirements of “Baby Boomer” nurses are causing concern among many. Particularly, I fear that when this generation departs the profession, it will leave a void in the workforce and they will take their years of knowledge and skill with them. As a profession, we must diligently plan for the future through succession planning in order to continue to deliver quality patient care. In doing this, we must utilize the talents of our younger generations by way of helping them to identify their personal strengths and using them towards a career that is both financially rewarding and meaningful such as nursing. I feel that I could helpful addressing these issues because I am an experience nurse leader of 25 years and I have assisted on all levels serving the needs of nursing. I support the my college Nursing Alumni Association as a Support Group Member where my general duties include increasing understanding, appreciation, and support for the goals and activities of the nursing college. I am a member of The University of Alabama Black Alumni Association where I support initiatives for Black Alumni engagement, student mentoring, and increased support of the scholarship fund. Additionally, I precept students to prepare them for an actual work setting and to project a positive view of the nursing profession . Lastly, through my employment with the US Veterans Affairs, the largest healthcare organization in the nation, I am a Certified Mentor and I routinely use the GROW model to coach and mentor other staff .

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Kyteria Holmes, DNP, RNView of the Issues: Nursing shortage and appropriate staffing are some of the most pressing issues affecting nursing today . I will assist ANA by advocating on behalf of nurses by writing my Congressman and the federal administrative agencies that fill in the details for new or amended laws for regulations and rules . I will get involved using the activist toolkit to help nurses voices get their voices heard .

Tanisha Leonard, ADN, RN, BLS, ACLS, PALSView of the Issues: An issue that nurses face today and has been an issue for quite some time is shortage of nurses . There are a number of contributing factors including “lack of potential educators, high turnover, and inequitable distribution of the workforce” (Haddad, Annamaraju, and Toney-Butler, 2020) . Nursing shortages increase the possibility of errors including medication errors . In addition, shortages decrease patient satisfaction and staff morale . It has been proven that a smaller patient to nurse ratio has helped increased patient satisfaction and decreased patient errors such as medication errors . I would like to work with the ASNA and the ABN in reviewing nurse patient regulation, starting with empowering staff nurses .

Denise Robertson, MSN, RN, CNLView of the Issues: As a RN of more than 25 years, I have been a part of many changes that have impacted the future of nursing but none as much as the movement towards telehealth and telehealth technology. Telehealth is the use of electronic information and technology to provide care when a patient and health care professional cannot be in the same place at the same time. In 2016, an estimated 61% of United States healthcare institutions and 40–50% of hospitals were using telehealth. Also, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, telehealth is being used more now than ever as physicians and practitioners are needing to find new ways to provide care from as distance.

Page 19: 2020 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention · Book reflects the calendar year 2019 . As your Treasurer, I feel it important to also include a financial ... the crowd

17

2020 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention

There is currently a lack of awareness and knowledge about telehealth because nurses are not commonly taught about telehealth in most nursing programs therefore, there is a general lack of knowledge and awareness about this specialty amongst the clinicians that are providing care. As a result of this deficiency, professional recruitment for this field is problematic. Also, the population that is often served is usually older adults which often times have a negative perception of technology. As a Manager of Telehealth Operations, I aim to change this by providing education and telehealth focused training to all, not just nurses. I will help the ASNA address this issue my offering my knowledge as a subject matter expert. I will also offer educational trainings that will help to satisfy some of the curiosity that nurses have for the specialty.

PRESIDENT-ELECT

James Hardin, MSc, BSN, RNView of the Issues: There are numerous issues that nurses are facing today, including maintaining their mental health, balancing work and safety, and the challenges of a healthcare environment that changes daily. One of the issues that isn’t often as apparent is the potential of nurse exploitation as a commodity. Whether it’s being pushed to perform duties in gray areas of scope or working with dangerous patient loads, nurses need a consistent voice to insure respect for nursing as more than a job or a number on a position control register. I would use the platform of the position to further the cause of nursing in Alabama by encouraging increased legislation for the protection and growth of nursing in the state, as well as further positioning nurses in leadership roles on organizational and community boards.

SECRETARY

Julie Jones, EdD, RNView of the Issues: The chief issue currently facing nursing is the COVID-19 pandemic. The Alabama State Nurses Association represents nurses on the front lines of the pandemic. Many nursing professionals have taken time off from work due to contracting COVID-19 and had to use personal time for leave taken. Many have not had the resources needed. Another issue near and dear to my heart is the staffing crisis. I feel that it is imperative that we advocate for safe staffing to promote positive outcomes. We need to make sure that our voice is heard to help ensure safe staffing in our state. Finally, the opioid epidemic is a serious issue that we are facing. Nurses, again, are on the front lines of this epidemic. Nurses are in a unique position to make a positive impact on patient outcomes. We need to make sure that nurses have the support needed to address the needs of those impacted by opioid addiction. I have learned so much through my wonderful ASNA nursing mentors. I would love to help make a difference through advocating for Alabama nurses in the role of President-Elect. Having knowledge on the functions of ASNA through the legislative process, as well as, networking with leaders across our state, I feel that I am in the position to take on this role to support our great nurses of Alabama. I will listen carefully to the needs voiced by nurses in our state and would be honored to help advocate for them.

TREASURER

Frankie Wallis, DNP, NP-C, COI, CHCM – Current Treasurer, ASNAView of the Issues: View of Issues: Work-Life Balance . To maintain a healthy work-life balance is challenging for the nurse . Coupled with the challenges of today’s society, there are many competing factors associated with the nursing career - patient advocacy issues, advanced education, competency, professional commitments, community involvement, and the list goes on . Although these elements are crucial to the nursing profession, the nurse must commit to their personal attributes associated with their faith, health, personal well-being, family, and pleasure . Through ASNA, I will continue to support education and awareness to fulfill ANA’s initiative of creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of health, safety, and wellness which allows nurses to live to the fullest capacity physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually .

PRESIDENT’S REPORTHere We Are

Sarah Wilkinson-Buchmann, DNP, RN

Welcome to the virtual 2020 ASNA Convention! I have never been more proud to be your colleague . Nursing has repeatedly risen to the challenges placed in our paths throughout 2020 . A pandemic has tightened its grip on our state and our nation, but Alabama nurses have proven stronger than ever and realized the power in numbers . Nursing has rallied in healthcare facilities and communities throughout the state to care for our profession as we care for those who have fallen victim to COVID-19 . Nursing is like the glue of healthcare; without it, healthcare would likely fall apart . So, it is no wonder that especially now, during a pandemic, nursing is vital to the sustainability of healthcare operations . If Alabama nurses will continue to come together in the interests of our profession, the underestimated strength of nursing to shape healthcare policy and nursing practice in our state will certainly become evident to those who have previously been dismissive of our potential . Power does lie in unity! As your ASNA President, I want to remind you though that our journey together should not be defined by a pandemic . We have accomplished great things and overcome numerous barriers to propel the nursing profession into the spotlight where it belongs!

Your willingness to unite as a profession and let your voices be heard this year has strengthened our organization and advanced the professional welfare of nurses throughout the state . ASNA will continue to advocate for you and our profession! We must physically distance ourselves from one another during this 2020 Convention, but COVID-19 has not stopped the comradery of ASNA members . Remain engaged in ASNA well after we have adjourned this evening! Nursing depends on you, so continue to encourage other nurses to join our ranks and be a part of directing the course for the future of nursing .

Finally, I want to thank you for the opportunity to have served as your ASNA President . It has been my honor and privilege to represent our wonderful profession at both the state and national levels . We have accomplished much in these last two years, but much work is left to do to positively impact the future of nursing and that of healthcare in Alabama . As the most trusted profession in the country for 18 years in a row and the largest sector in healthcare, nursing can be the catalyst for change right here in our own state! Be a part of that change!

TREASURER’S REPORTFrankie Wallis, DNP, NP-C

ASNA operates financially on a calendar year basis . The Asset and Liability spread in your Convention Book reflects the calendar year 2019 . As your Treasurer, I feel it important to also include a financial update from the 2019 House of Delegates to the current, 2020 House of Delegates . Therefore, my remarks are addressing the HOD19 to HOD20 period although the financial statement is a 2019 calendar year statement provided by our accounting firm, Carr, Riggs and Ingram, Montgomery, Alabama .

ASNA income streams are mainly through membership dues, events and CE programs . Our membership increased significantly in the spring/summer of this year . Before that significant increase, the monthly dues averaged around $16,000 a month . With the increase of over 800 new and renewing members, our dues monthly income has risen to over $20,000 per month . As you recall, our House of Delegates in 2019 was at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama . It was a Grand HOD with great participation, including our guest of Honor, Dr . Ernest Grant, President of the American Nurses Association . Rather than “make a little money,” we lost $2-3,000 on the event…but it was expected and well worth it . The most profitable ASNA event is FACES . We will normally clear about $6-12,000 with a good supply of vendors and strategic planning . Due to COVID-19, FACES 2020 was cancelled . This impacted our budget accordingly by around -$10,000 . The ASNA Career Center, HOTJOBS has positively netted around that same amount so far in 2020…thankfully, offsetting the lack of revenue from FACES . Our VIRTUAL HOD this year is projected to break even . CE programs have been off pace so far this year, but we will have a fresh CE package this fall that is expected to bring in funds, particularly in this “RN renewal” year . ASNA expenses are within budget and no large purchases or unexpected costs have impacted operations . ASNA investment funds at Merrill Lynch have grown to over $250,000 . Remarkable, in the COVID economy…and due to a conservative mix of mutual funds, bond funds and CD’s .

The Alabama Nurses Foundation continues to grow and serve nurses with scholarships and community grants . In February 2020, ASNA negotiated with the University of South Alabama College of Nursing to establish an ANF Scholarship Endowment Fund . We were able to “leverage” a $50,000 pledge with matching donor gifts to establish a $225,000 fund in OUR NAME! The guaranteed return on the fund allows us to provide over $8,000 in scholarships per year on earnings while the principle continues to grow from 3 to 5% . We have talked to other colleges of nursing seeking to leverage our funds with similar matching gift opportunities and will continue to do so . Currently, our investment fund balance for the ANF at Merrill Lynch is over $500,000 . The Nurse license plates have been the main source of ANF income .

First, let me say that I am proud of District 3 this year . The state and the country had to face unforeseen healthcare challenges . As nurses, we have stood strong and faced those challenges head on even at the risk of our own health .

New Initiatives: Surveys were sent out to district 3 members in an effort involve all 13 counties within the district . Members overwhelmingly expressed wanting to become more involved . As a result, the district voted to have county representatives . Theses representatives would work within their county to involve more nurses . I would like to take this time to acknowledge them as they have been instrumental in membership and recruitment .

District 4Dr. Jacqueline C. Smith

The members of Alabama State Nurses Association (ASNA) District 4 are grateful to close out another year . The Year of the Nurse has certainly been historical locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally . Nurses have played vital roles in the promotion of health and wellness throughout history and 2020 has been no exception . This year nurses have been on the forefront of combating a new challenge better known as COVID-19, which no one saw coming and for which the world continues to await a resolution . Through it all, nurses have stood shoulder-to-shoulder as a united front by laying hands on the sick, speaking words of comfort, and finding strength to hold fast to our profession and calling .

This is a good year to be a nurse . The majority of society stopped in wake of the human, racial, and social injustices which ultimately led to the death of George Floyd while in custody of law enforcement officers . The thunderous outcries resounding from around the world weighed heavily on our hearts, minds and souls . We trust that this new awakening is not just a wrinkle in time to be forgotten in a few short days, but that we will remember our purpose on earth, which is to serve God while serving our brothers and sisters .

The 2019 ASNA Annual Convention concluded with beautiful memories of spectacular views of the Gulf Coast, sweet communion with colleagues, and the anxious anticipation of reconvening next year at a different venue . Members of district four began to plan how we could attract and retain new members and impact our local community . As usual, the membership graciously donated funds in support of St . Mary’s Home, a local orphanage in Mobile which provided services to teens .

District 4 has been entrusted to ensure funds from the Oma Houser estate are disbursed to deserving future nurses residing in Baldwin County . This year, 2 scholarship recipients attending the University of South Alabama College of Nursing were awarded scholarships . We understand the principles of sowing and reaping; seedtime and harvest . We also know the importance of supporting, nurturing, and mentoring future nurses and leaders .

COVID-19 forced our district to convene out bi-monthly meetings on Zoom . Whereas this is certainly an example of the latest technology available with the click of your mouse, we miss the fellowship we experienced by attending the face-to-face meetings . The delicious food is also something we are unable to duplicate or replace .

In closing, I want to thank the members of district four for allowing me to serve as District President for the past 2 years . It has been a learning experience that helped me to become what I was destined to be . The district will install a new president-elect and treasurer shortly before the convention starts . I look forward to relinquishing my job as district 4 president to our president-elect and will continue to support the district in its endeavors .

2019-2020 District 5 OfficersPresident: James Hardin, MSc, BSN, RNVice President: Katilya Ware, PhD, RNSecretary:Treasurer:

Sola Popoola, PhD, RN-BCAmy Curtis, PhD, RN, CHSE

ASNA District 5 has made great strides this year in expanding membership and participation of members . We hope to have strong delegate participation in this year’s virtual convention .

Membership and Recruitment: District 5 Membership Meetings are held at a minimum of quarterly, but we attempt to meet every other month . The District was holding face to face meetings prior to the pandemic . The last face to face meeting was held in March 2020, hosted by members Jennifer Wilson and Brandy Young at South University . There have been two Zoom meetings held during the pandemic (May and July) with good participation . The District Officers meet prior to District meetings to review membership, financials, and to discuss any pending issues .

The District Vice President, Dr . Katilya Ware and I worked on membership strategies this year . The primary strategies have been to introduce frequent local small group meetings to improve visibility and participation, and to target senior nursing students to transition into the association . Jennifer Wilson and Brandy Young were identified in the River Region (Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore Counties) to start some of these meetings, but the pandemic halted face to face meetings . Katilya and I started working with Universities on meeting with their senior students . I provided lectures for Tuskegee University and South University that included the benefits of joining ASNA . Katilya set up a meeting with students at Southern Union, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic .

District 5 has seen an increase in membership this year, from 472 in October 2019 to 580 at the end of June 2020 .

Scholarships: District 5 continues to sponsor members for Leadership Academy . For Leadership Academy 2020, the District is sponsoring members Lynn Brown and Darlla Thompson .

Continuing Education (CE): District 5 continues to plan and coordinate CE activities for our district nurses . District 5 plans to sponsor at least 1 more CE opportunity before the end of the year .

ASNA Events: District 5 members participated in Nurses Day at the Capitol . Dr . Constance Hendricks brought students from Tuskegee University, Dr . Brandy Young brought students from South University .

Social Media: District 5 continues to have an active Facebook Page with a focus on providing more timely updates throughout the year .

Awards: Citations of Excellence were awarded to Casey Walker, RN and Ginger McDougal, NP in March 2020 . Casey was nominated by her supervisor Kara Thomas at the Department of Public Health . Ginger was nominated by April Bishop at Alabama State Nurses Association .

Continuing Nursing EducationVirginia “Ginger” Collum, MSN/Ed, RN

Continuing Education Coordinator, ASNA

The start of this October 2019-August 2020 reporting year appeared to be going along as usual until the COVID-19 Pandemic hit us in February 2020 and in the blink of an eye the whole world turned upside down . Nursing education slowed down tremendously and then came to a screeching halt in March with the quarantine . We all had to step back, look at everything and develop a plan of action . For that reason, less and/or altered education activities have been approved and presented . Activities are currently being presented virtually .

The Continuing Nursing Education Committee is composed of two different units referred to as the Approval and Provider Units . Both units meet separately and perform different functions for the association . The members of these committees are also the Editorial Review Board for the Alabama Nurse .

The Approval Unit is responsible for the voluntary approval process as designated by the American Nurses Association Credentialing Committee’s (ANCC) guidelines . The committee has the following members:

Dr . Sola Aina-MoshoodMary Ann Austin Gennifer BakerDelnora Bell Patricia GreenBetty Jane JollyBetty KeyAnnitta LoveAmy Morris

This past year they evaluated 60 Individual Activities during the October 2019 – August, 2020 year, for a total of 490 .28 contact hours . In addition ASNA has Approved 5 Providers . They are approved for a period of 3 years and members of the committee rotate approving these applicants . Each year the Approval Unit evaluates approximately 15 of these agencies .

The Provider Unit is responsible for all development of ASNA education activities . The committee is led by Dr . Gretchen McDaniel, Lead Nurse Planner and members of the committee include Bette Jane Jolly and Drs . Mary Beth Bodin and Frankie Wallis . They not only develop activities but are also responsible for review of all abstracts . This year they were responsible for developing 6 different activities . 3 were live activities and 3 were enduring and placed in the Alabama Nurse.

There is always room for more volunteers on the two committees; just let your District President know you are interested . Committee members are chosen by the ASNA Districts .

ETHICS AND HUMAN RIGHTS/ ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE

Krystal Lockett, DNP, RN Co-Chair and Azita Amiri. Ph.D., RN Co-Chair

The Ethics and Human Rights and Environmental Committee continued its work following ASNA goals and objectives in different pillars . The focus of this committee’s activities within the past year was on two subjects: Environmental issues in Alabama (coal ash and water fluoridation) and justice and additional therapeutic options (community garden and music therapy) for prisoners . Below is a detailed overview of our activities, which are classified based on the ASNA goals . It is worth to note that the COBID-19 pandemic interrupted or delayed some of the activities .

Goal 1- Provide leadership for health policy and legislative activities1 . We submitted a proposal to ANA Assembly entitled “Change of position statement on Water

Fluoridation,” which was not selected to be presented in the assembly . However, it has been forwarded to the relevant committee to be reviewed .

2 . Supported coal ash ban resolution suggested by the Perry county commissioner Benjamin Eaton by encouraging members to sign petition discussed during 2-20-2020 call

3 . Working with the Alabama State Department of Health on inmates’ access to Quitline . As you may know, inmates are not eligible to use Quitline as a way to quit smoking unlike other citizens who have access to free resources like tobacco patches; therefore, the committee members are in the process of discussing the issue with state providers to become tobacco counselors so that prisoners can qualify for the patches

4 . We were working on two different resolutions regarding environmental issues (water fluoridation and coal ash) in Alabama . This process was delayed due to the pandemic . We will pursue it for this coming year .

5 . We are in the process of speaking with Alabama state senators and mobile council leaders about the prisoner resolution and proposals .

Goal 2- Advocate for Alabama nurses on professional practice issues1 . We shared evidence-based articles to committee members regarding the effectiveness of music

therapy, community gardens, smoking cessation in prisons—a google folder with evidence-based articles created and articles disseminated to members .

2 . Several articles relevant to environmental health discussed during conference calls3 . We created a group of interested members to work on publication for the Alabama Nurse and

local newspaper in Mobile for nurses week regarding committee efforts .4 . Also, we invited an expert in music therapy from UAB to inform members about the benefits

of music therapy for prisoners and the possibility of starting music therapy in one or two of the prisons in Alabama . Due to pandemic, this was interrupted and will be rework after we gain some normalcy .

5 . Encouraged committee members to participate in the leadership academy, One member applied for the leadership academy

6 . Encouraged students to apply for the scholarship

Goal 3- Improve the visibility and image of ASNA and the nursing profession1 . The committee provided Christmas gifts to 215 inmates in prison in Mobile, Alabama—We reached

out to academic facilities, correctional staff, and churches for donations and assisting in the gift bags

2 . We arranged and encouraged the donation of three Christmas trees to prisons in Alabama and worked closely with some prisons in Alabama

3 . The committee members are working on utilizing music therapy in prisons by collaborating with UAB music therapy specialist for evidence-based practice of music therapy .

4 . Also, we are working on adding community gardens in prisons by collaborating with UAH professor, a specialist in this topic

5 . The current members are reaching out to other correctional nurses and nurses in the community to join ASNA

6 . We are also seeking collaboration with outside organizations to assist in programs implementation

LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEEThe Legislative Report is encapsulated in the Executive Director’s Report due to the unusual circumstances related to COVID-19 and the ensuing short Alabama Legislative Session . The following is a snapshot of key issues that were and are being addressed on an ongoing basis:

Medicaid Expansion – ASNA 2019 HOD passed a resolution supporting the Medicaid Expansion due to its profound impact on the healthcare of Alabama citizens . No particular model was endorsed by ASNA . However, the need for more access to care for Alabama’s disproportional underserved populations is undeniable . Access to care is key to keeping people healthy, avoiding expensive emergency room use for “primary care,” and overall balance in the healthcare provider system . We have seen the chaos in micro caused by COVID-19 on our system . Before COVID, the transition from early intervention, primary care, elective procedures and acute care had become somewhat a “dysfunctional norm” that costs much more than a smooth access to care system . ASNA supports lively debate from our state and federal elected officials on Medicaid expansion . The right system would be more cost effective and much more humane for our citizens .

Full Practice Authority for APRNs – ASNA’s President, is Chair of a Steering Committee composed of presidents of the primary APRN organizations whose purpose is to compile legislation to bring Alabama into conformity with most other states who have removed many APRN practice restrictions . Recently, the group settled on a strategy that may bring this issue to the forefront through collaboration rather than years of political struggle . Stay tuned…

Nurse Workplace Safety – Last year, ASNA sponsored a joint resolution of the Alabama House and Senate to place warning posters in clinical waiting areas across the state reminding the public that it is a FELONY to attack a nurse or healthcare worker! We are pleased to report that many hospitals and clinics have complied, and these posters have been gratefully acknowledged by our nurses .

Discrimination – The events in the spring/summer of 2020 have raised awareness of the need for civility, respect and equal treatment of ALL people under the law . ASNA Board issued a statement drafted by President Wilkinson-Buchmann condemning all forms of racism and discrimination within the profession and in our society as a whole . Nursing ethical standards have long stood for this principle and as “The Most Trusted Professionals” nurses can lead by example in the workplace and in their personal lives . The ASNA Diversity and Inclusion Committee has distributed a survey to measure the pulse of nurses regarding this issue . At the time of this report the survey is still live .

COVID-19 – Pages could be written regarding ASNA’s advocacy during the pandemic . Our survey in April 2020, had over 1600 responses and over 200 pages of comments! ASNA applied for several grants from the CARES ACT funds given to the state and had over 5,000 nurses sign a petition supporting our requests . Big political power groups got millions in grants…nurses $0 .

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION REPORTDr. Jacqueline C. Smith, President D&I Committee

The Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Committee convened during the fall of 2019 to establish the committee’s focus for the year . The membership participated in a survey which provided numerous ideas and suggestions . With so many issues at hand, the committee decided it was befitting to begin with us, the ASNA . We were challenged to look at practices and participation during the district meetings and to see if what we observed was a true representation of ASNA’s membership . We were challenged to determine if we were diverse and if so, to what extent .

During the most recent meeting of the D&I Committee, members reflected on the horrible mistreatment of George Floyd, his untimely death and implications of this incident on the nursing profession . The world watched, as the life of a fellow American, human being, son, father, brother and friend, was snatched away as the result of a police officer kneeling on Mr . Floyd’s neck for 8 minute and 46 seconds . Perhaps this was an opportunity to speak up, speak out, and follow the lead of other nursing organizations .

Instead of immediately following suite, the D&I committee decided this was the right time to examine ourselves; to see how discrimination, racism, and injustice has impacted our membership . We submitted questions to comprise a survey that will be circulated to all ASNA members in the near future . This data will be disseminated to nurses throughout Alabama and the United States . As we prepare for this year’s convention and take note of our theme, The Year of the Nurse, we realize that nurses must continue to advocate for human rights for all members of society . We must demand equal right and fair treatment at work, home school, church and within our professional organizations . We hope to embrace this as our new normal; a normalcy filled with opportunities to unite and grow .

ASNA Executive Director ReportJohn C. Ziegler, MA. D. MIN,

ASNA Executive Director

Late last year, the American Nurses Association announced that their theme for 2020 would be; “2020 THE YEAR OF THE NURSE .” Appropriately, 2020 also commemorated the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth . When the theme was introduced, who could have imagined that 2020 would indeed be the “Year of the Nurse” for an entirely different reason?

By January, numerous celebrations and special events were well into the planning stages… when a strange new flu emerged on the other side of the globe . COVID-19 would take center stage in highlighting the professionalism, dedication and bravery of nurses around the world! With ALL due respect, the 200th anniversary of Florence’s birth would hardly make the news . Instead, our TV’s were saturated with nurses dressed head to toe in PPE risking all for the patients infected by the mysterious, often deadly virus . Organizations, in response to the rising pandemic began cancelling physical meetings and events and communicating “virtually .” ASNA was no different .

We did, however hold one event in February that was the best ever…Nurses Day at the Capitol . In early February 2020 more than 700 nurses and nursing students filled two auditoriums and after their education sessions came together to “rally” on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol . As was our tradition, speakers from other coalition nursing organizations joined public officials and ASNA Officers in addressing the crowd . Media covered the event widely . That day was the final large gathering for ASNA in 2020 . COVID-19 presented itself center stage in late February and early March . Subsequently, the Alabama Legislature had a short Session, our annual FACES event in April was cancelled, May Nurses Week celebrations went “virtual .” ASNA advocacy efforts were primarily directed toward COVID-19 issues, full practice authority strategy and taking a strong stand against division and racial disparities in our country .

We developed our C-19 Response Strategy from what we learned through a survey we distributed in mid-April . More than 1600 nurses responded to the survey and added over 200 pages of comments single spaced! We published the survey results in a huge center-fold spread in the Alabama Nurse and sent letters with the results to every Alabama federal and state official! One Senator and one Congresswoman gave us a private 30-minute conference call to discuss the issues . Additionally, ASNA applied for funding from the 1 .8 billion CARES Act federal aid to Alabama for COVID relief . Every week, ASNA would directly communicate with officials with the Governor’s office on the status of our requests . They were kind enough to say they were studying it…but at the time of this writing – no response!

Throughout the summer of 2020, ASNA was at the table with the Alabama Department of Education regarding a “School Reopening Plan .” We were told by the Alabama Department of Public Health that due to COVID-19 and other factors, they had a large number of retirements and were in dire need of hiring nurses to fill those positions . We spent many, many hours working with our federal and state officials and though our input was important…nothing concrete was applied . The “power players” in the state have received many millions from the Governor’s Office CARES federal funds . Yet, the nurses…have received $0 . It is interesting to note that nursing organizations across the country have also been “stiffed” and given little more than a “respectful” hearing . The good news is this . We have been at the table and have spoken loudly and clearly about the heroic efforts and needs of nurses during the pandemic and going

forward . Our voices have been expressed through more than 5,000 Alabama nurses who signed a petition to validate our requests for CARES Act funding, your President, Dr . Sarah Wilkinson-Buchmann has been quoted in the media, attended meetings with the Governor, wrote letters to ALL Alabama Congresspersons and advocated for nurses in the most passionate and dignified manner possible . Your ASNA staff and lobbyists have worked hard along with ASNA Board, district leaders and members on COVID-19 and other important social/professional issues . Although ASNA’s commitment to high ethical standards of equality and just treatment of all people had been expressed through 2019 resolutions and publicity, 2020 presented a sad but vital opportunity to stand for these principals again . The death of George Floyd rocked the nation with outbursts of anger, demonstrations and riots regarding the systemic racism that is present in American society . Though many choose to “go low” in their response to this issue, nurses as a profession “go high!” The Nurses’ Code of Ethics espouses that ALL patients are equally important . Ethically and professionally, nurses don’t see in color…they don’t see rich, poor or gender preference…they see PATIENTS . Yet, as individuals and as the “Most Trusted Professionals” we have a responsibility and the opportunity to promote these ethical standards throughout our culture . Dr . Ernest Grant, President of ANA and Dr . Sarah Wilkinson-Buchmann both issued strong statements to that end . Our ASNA Diversity and Inclusion Committee circulated a survey designed to measure the experiences and perspectives of our members on this vital cultural issue . Regarding the subject of advocating for full practice authority for APRN’s, ASNA continues to lead a group of APRN leaders in developing a strategic strategy and eventual legislation that will bring Alabama to the level of two-thirds of our states who already have those policies in place . This will increase access to primary care in urban and particularly in rural areas of the state as restrictions on APRN’s will open additional doors to serve .

In summary, ASNA has had a banner year in advocacy despite the hindrances to physical meetings, business and fellowship . Our membership has increased to its HIGHEST LEVEL in decades! Nurses have noticed that you (ASNA) has been fighting for them . We have given them a platform for their VOICES to be heard . As we have all been inspired by their selfless service, they have been inspired by your leadership and advocacy for ALL nurses . When they see that TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER and that participation in their professional organization has immediate and long-term benefits… they gladly join and add their voices to ASNA . Thank you all for your dedication to promote EXCELLENCE IN NURSING . You are succeeding!

Legal ReportJon Barganier

And this, too, shall pass away.

What a year! That about says it all .

When the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down in New York on September 11, 2001, after being struck by passenger jets commandeered by terrorists, I thought I could not even imagine something like that happening prior to that event . For days, the skies were empty of aircraft and the once ubiquitous white trails crossing the sky vanished . It was an odd and uncertain time in American history . Personally, it was just ridiculously unimaginable .

When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in August 2005 and I saw water sweep through levies and deluge a chunk of that great American city, I thought wow that is hard to believe .

And now, the pandemic of 2020 and I am again watching television with similar disbelief . The entire country partially shut down by our states then haltingly re-opened here and there with varying success . It is amazing! It is historical for sure, but experiencing it personally, it is just hard to take in .

True, most of us, even those of us in the senior citizen ranks, did not witness the carnage of the two world wars, the suffering of the Great Depression or the 1918 pandemic which makes the current pandemic look much more tame, and maybe if we had, then experiencing these recent 21st century events would not be so hard to digest . Maybe every generation needs a few “unimaginable” events to bring us back into the real world which has, after all, through millenniums seen earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, pandemics, and wars that have been far more unimaginable than what we have witnessed over the past twenty years .

History tells the whole story . These things come and these things go . As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes, “…there is nothing new under the sun .” In 1859, a struggling and many thought a washed-up politician and lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, told a story to a group of businessmen and farmers . “It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: ‘And this, too, shall pass away.’ How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! ‘And this, too, shall pass away.’”

These words are great reminders in times like these . But as a lawyer, I often deal with people living on the edge of chaos whether it is a job dispute that might cost them their job, a divorce that threatens their family, or potentially financial ruin . These are all “pandemics” in their own right if you are the person experiencing them . In those times, words like “And this, too, shall pass away” do not offer all that you may need . You may need legal advice . ASNA provides that to the member who needs it . It is a great member benefit and it is available in good times and not so good times . Take care!

TWO NEW AL State Nurses Association’s initiatives started in 2020 to support our AL Nurses

FIRST - “Hot Jobs .” Advertising and recruiting provided to our state hospitals focusing on their highest demand positions . HOT to hire! If any candidate interested, we get the resume immediately reviewed by the decision makers . No waiting in a stack and possibly overlooked . Jobs are constantly changing on ASNA’s Hot Jobs, so be sure to check the site out! https://alabamanurses .org/hotjobs/

SECOND - “Career Coaching” . ASNA is committed to assisting our AL nurses in every possible way by offering free career counseling . What? Why? When? Could it help ME?

ASNA started this service for ALL our nurses from experienced nurses looking for a change to graduating RN’s comprising their first resume . Our Career Coach, Bridget Stevens, has been in the healthcare industry for over 25 years working in consulting, recruiting and coaching . Some of our services have been to assist resume content, steer networking efforts, guide in job seeking efforts and inside interview tips . A few of our past nurses have commented:

“The Alabama State Nurses Association is an incredibly valuable resource for nursing students. Because of the free assistance offered by ASNA, I was able to be confident in my resume and cover letter. I would highly recommend the ASNA career center to anyone who is looking to improve their resume and get free career advice. I am so incredibly thankful that I was able to connect with the amazing people at ASNA who not only helped me improve my resume, but also gave me the confidence to apply for my dream job.”-Hannah R .

“I highly recommend that student nurses take advantage of the free ASNA resume assistance they offer. My resume needed a lot of changes from a high school resume to a professional-looking college resume. Bridget helped walk me through what to highlight from my experience and the specific language to use to match the job description of the position for which I was applying. Because of her assistance, I was able to submit a professional resume that I wouldn’t have been able to produce on my own. (PS. I got the job!)”-Corrine P .

Questions on the best employer, best benefits, how to apply, how to present....but being an active member of ASNA led me to a free service of a career coach. With all her diligence with lengthy conversations, editing my resume, interview practices and sending my resume to the right folks...I HAVE ACCEPTED AN INCREDIBLE JOB I WOULD HAVE NEVER FOUND ON MY OWN!Thank you ASNA and Bridget!”-Lauren W .

Director of Leadership ServicesCharlene Roberson, MEd, NPD-BC, RN-BC

Director of Leadership Services, ASNA

Intellectually 2020 has been a great learning curve for me with all the new and evolving challenges . It has been and continues to be incredibly exciting . As always, there is the continuing ongoing project of updating the ASNA web page . My primary focus is the inclusion of current and useful clinical themed items . Shortly after COVID -19 came to America much time was spent researching and including pertinent COVID- 19 facts . Providing access to the constant changing clinical facts surrounding COVID-19 material became my priority early in the pandemic .

ASNA was lucky that we had the ZOOM platform in place prior to 2020 and were familiar with the mechanics of virtual meetings . Then almost all meetings became ZOOM focused, so a new method of business became operationalized .

As the year unfolded, we made the difficult but nevertheless imperative decision that FACES ’20 had to be cancelled . There were so many great presentations and Posters set to be presented . Many presenters were agreeable to transfer their scholarship to the Mable Lamb Clinical Day at convention . Then the convention was cancelled, and the House of Delegates evolved to become virtual . The Mable Lamb Day will still occur . The Posters and the presentations will be available virtually on the ASNA website at same time as the virtual House of Delegates and will remain in place for an extended period .

We are looking forward to 2021 . Perhaps a bit calmer but still leading the way for healthcare for Alabama citizens .
