Bullying

Bullying exists at all levels of society. Schools, as microcosms of

broader society, do have incidents of bullying, which is why having policies

and practices to minimise and manage incidents of bullying is essential

for schools. At Bosco our Pastoral Programs, which teach students about

tolerance and respect for each other, definitely help to reduce the incidence

of bullying. Identifying actual incidents of bullying, and taking appropriate

steps in response to these incidents is something that the College takes

very seriously. It is important, however, to ensure that what is labelled

bullying is accurately labelled.

According to a recent survey conducted by The Queensland University of

Technology, some parents have a flawed understanding of what bullying is.

While there is no universal definition of bullying, it is widely agreed amongst

researchers that there are three essential elements: that the behaviour

is ongoing, that it is intended to be harmful, and that there is a power imbalance. Taking these elements into account, incidents such as single acts

of aggression or nastiness, students being involved in a situation of mutual

conflict or disagreement, or students just not liking each other are not

classified as bullying, even though they may be unpleasant experiences for

some children.

The QUT research suggests that parents who misinterpret an incident as

bullying may respond in an inappropriate way, causing greater harm than

good. It also states that the best way to handle bullying is for the school,

parents and students to work collaboratively. With this in mind, if your child

reports that they are being treated in a manner that is bullying in nature, you

should encourage them to have a conversation with their Year Coordinator.

Alternatively, contact their Year Coordinator yourself and ask them to have

a conversation with your child. An investigative conversation with your child

will enable their Year Coordinator to gain a proper understanding of the

situation, and to implement appropriate strategies to assist your child. If the

conversation reveals that the incident is not bullying, the Year Coordinator

will still be able to work with your child to ensure a positive outcome.

The College regularly reviews its practices regarding bullying, with student

surveys being an important part of the review process. Our aim is to

continue to build and maintain a safe and supportive environment for all

members of the College community.

Year 7 Vaccinations

The second day of Year 7 Vaccinations is being conducted on Thursday 10 September, when students will receive their second dose of the HPV

vaccine. Year 7 students who were absent for the first vaccination day, and

who have returned their vaccination form, will receive their first dose of the

vaccine on this date. Additionally, there will be the opportunity for any Year

10 student who missed their Meningococcal vaccination to receive it on this

day.

Stay connected

As COVID-19 restrictions of varying levels remain in place across Australia, and that will likely be the case for the foreseeable future, R U OK? is calling on Australians to check in on their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours because it’s important that we stay connected, especially in challenging times.

On Monday 31 August St John Bosco College pastoral classes will be watching How to be a good mate and chatting about what we can do to stay connected to our friends, family and school community.

Please continue this conversation at home ...

Newman Facilitator | Mrs Stephanie McVey

Traditionally, the Newman Symposium showcases the learning and differentiation that have occurred within the Newman classroom. Unfortunately, due to health concerns related to COVID-19, the Newman Symposium will not be held this year. This is because it would be impossible to maintain effective social distancing with the number of guests involved and the close proximity when viewing the students’ work.

However, the College still wishes to share with you the excellent work and different learning opportunities that have occurred in the Newman classroom. Parents/guardians of Newman students will receive an email towards the end of this term, when the Symposium was to be held, that will contain information and links to students’ work. In addition to this, Newman teachers will continue to place examples of students’ work in the College Newsletter. We hope that you enjoy this showcasing of achievements, and that you and your family remain safe and healthy during this challenging period.

CaSPA DREAMING STORYTELLING PROJECT

Sydney Catholic Schools' CaSPA program provides opportunities for students to learn, collaborate and grow through the performing arts. One program that they have been running for several years is the Murrawadeen Goodjarga Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Performance Ensemble. Two of our students at the college, Bailey and Kyanne Robinson-Armstrong have been performing with this ensemble group for several years, highlighting at events and school tours the rich Indigenous Culture of our country.

This year, however, many limitations have been placed on the Goodjarga Ensemble group due to COVID 19, so new innovative ways of embracing and sharing culture to the community have been developed, and here at the college we have supported this venture.

Bailey and Kyanne were filmed last Friday retelling a local Dreaming story that is based around the Illawarra East Coast near Port Kembla, New South Wales. 'The Story of the Five Islands' by the Children of the Coomaditchie community, represent the beliefs and teachings of the custodians of the land around the Coomaditchie lagoon, and reflect the continual Aboriginal presence in the area since prehistoric times.

Year 9 multimedia students, Harrison Errington and Lyla Smart volunteered their time and expertise to capture this Dreaming story, told by Bailey and Kyanne. This footage will be used by CaSPA as an educational and learning tool to be shared with Indigenous and Non Indigenous people.

HSIE | Ms Michelle Halpin

Every year in November the College commemorates those men and women who have served their country in a time of war. This year, we would like to create a commemorative photo presentation of relatives of the College community who have served their country in a time of war, allowing students to feel a personal connection to this significant day. These relatives can be from any country and have served in any war.

If you would like a photo of a family member included who served their country, would you please email a JPEG photo to [email protected] with a name of the person photographed (preferably in uniform) and any other relevant information, if able (war served in, battalion, rank, etc.).

DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER WHO HAS SERVED IN ANY WAR? WE WOULD LIKE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THEIR SERVICE.

Science Department | Ms Margaret Burnes

As an end to our Geology topic in which we examined our resource use, the Year 7s reflected on their own ecological footprint. By redesigning a more positive footprint they came up with ways to improve everyday behaviours that would reduce their impact on the environment. Considerations included using less plastic, helping wildlife, reducing their length of time in the shower, walking to school and donating goods to charity. I think the future of our planet is safe in their hands.

This term, the Year 11 Industrial Technology - Timber Class have been designing watch cases. Initially, different hardwoods and softwoods were laminated together. When the glue had set, the block was cut into a lid and base. As a class, the pocket and profile cuts were drawn on V-Carve. Each case was CNC routed to remove the centre timber. The students then sanded and trimmed all faces of the case.

There were some great projects and potential Father’s Day gifts to take home.

HOW SHARED READING CAN HELP US CONNECT

Literacy and Numeracy | Mrs Peta Batty

Literature is a human tool created over the last, shall we say, 3,000, maybe 4,000, years to help humans survive and live well. Jane Davis (founder and director, The Reader)

The importance of reading cannot be overemphasised, particularly in times of stress and uncertainty. The Ancient Greeks recognised the power of reading and saw libraries as places for 'healing of the soul'. Great literature offers stories which reflect different models of human thinking, feeling, and being.

People involved in book clubs often report enhanced feelings of connectedness, which increases their ability to cope with the pressures of everyday life. The impact of group reading sessions is also garnered through bibliotherapy, which aims to help individuals improve their life by providing information, support, and guidance in the form of reading activities via books and stories.

Good books make you reread them. Great books make you re-examine your soul. ... stories capture our imagination sending us on a powerful journey of self-exploration, opening up our minds to new ideas and possibilities. They expand our sense of what it means to be human, teaching us about deep human experience heightening our sense of empathy and compassion, our emotional intelligence. By plumbing the depths of another's experience and gaining an insight into their fears and triumphs, we can be reassured as to what human beings are capable of as we survive our own lives every day, our own mysterious journeys.(from http://www.literaryhand.com/)

In these current times of anxiety, it may be books and reading that can offer a sense of connectedness and a greater understanding of the array of emotions being experienced.

Year 11 Food Technology students have been busy studying the sensory and functional properties of food throughout this term. To assist their learning students are required to conduct practical experimentation which has included coagulating eggs, denaturing protein through marinating meat, aeration and foaming in meringue/ pavlova, gelatinisation in lemon meringue pie and caramelisation and crystallisation in barley sugar and violet crumble. Lots of hands on fun and some fantastic results.
