SHOW RULES: APPLIES TO ALL EXHIBITORS
Member eligibility: This event is open to New Jersey 4-H members enrolled in the Rabbit, Cavy, Small Animal,
Herpetology & Poultry 4-H Projects for the 2018-2019 year. Members must have been enrolled in
grades 4-13 (includes first year out of high school) as of September 2018, and registered as a 4-H
member by January 1, 2019.
Participants must be a 4-H member “in good standing”, as specified in the state 4-H standards,
which may be reviewed at http://nj4h.rutgers.edu/policies/stateevents-memberingoodstanding.pdf.
Entering the show:
1. A completed checklist (page 19), payment, 4-H event permission form, and all required forms
must be mailed by September 4.
2. Make checks payable to “NJ 4-H SSAPAC”.
3. There will be a $25 fee for all returned checks.
4. There will be no refunds for:
• animals scratched from the show
• animals which fail the health inspection or are excused by the judge
• invalid entries - those which do not include ALL required documents
• late arrival
5. Late arrival automatically scratches the entire entry, with no refunds. Plan to arrive early,
allowing time for the health check.
Animal Eligibility:
1. All animals must have appropriate Health Form completed and signed. Any exhibitor with an
animal that requires a permit, MUST submit a copy of the permit with their entries. To verify
the need for a permit, visit http://ww.njfishandwildlife.com/permreq.htm
Failure to include the permit invalidates the entry, with no refund. See checklist, page 19.
2. There will be a health check for each animal, including those not entered in the show, prior to
entry into the show area. Any exhibitor in violation of this rule will be ejected from the show
grounds, with no refund.
3. Animals which fail the health check will not be permitted in the show area. There will be a
quarantine area available.
4. Rabbits must be legibly tattooed or have the identifying number in the left ear. Cavies may be
ear tagged, or have the identifying number attached to the left ear. Small Animals may have
their identifier attached to the left ear, or on the outside of the travel carrier. If there is more
than one animal in the carrier, the exhibitor must be present at judging in order to provide
identification.
5. There are special rules for Herpetology and Poultry, regarding permit and health
requirements. Those rules are on the species-specific pages later in the catalog. Be sure to

review them. Failure to enclose permits/health documentation invalidates your
entry. There will be no refunds for invalid entries. See Checklist, page 19 for
clarification.
6. The link to the State Veterinarian’s health recommendations for exhibition animals is:

the week of the show for updates. The show administration will make every effort to keep our
4-H members informed.
7. Please provide for weather extremes, relating to the care of your animals!
General Show Rules:
1. Exhibitors must be present at judging. Another 4-H member may present the animals for
judging, if the exhibitor is being judged in another area.
2. This is a carrying cage show. All cages must have solid bottoms. Animals must be adequately
housed.
3. Exhibitors are responsible for their own exhibits, including grooming, equipment, and carrying
to and from the tables. Exhibitors are also responsible for cleaning up their area before
leaving. Assistance may be provided by other 4-H members, with show administration
approval.
4. There will be NO doe & litter, sow & litter, or hen & chick classes.
5. All species will be judged according to current standards. Judge decisions are final.
6. The show committee reserves the right to add and/or substitute judges.
DONATION TABLE
Please bring donations! This helps fund our show. Animals (pedigreed preferred), equipment, new and gently
used items will all be accepted at the table on the morning of the show.
Please have all donations in by 9:45 a.m.
The table will be open from 10:30 a.m. through 1 p.m.
All unredeemed donations revert to the original owner. Unclaimed items at the end of the day will be
dispersed at the discretion of the Show Committee.

Rabbit: Sex/Age
Sex indicators: Male = Buck, Female = Doe
Age requirements: Junior = 3-6 months
Intermediate = 6-8 months in 6 class breeds ONLY.
Senior = 6 months and over for 4-class breed (no intermediates)
= 8 months and over for 6-class breeds
6 class breeds: American, American Chinchilla, Argente Brun, Beveren, Blanc De Hotot, Californian, Champagne D’Argent, Checkered Giant, Cinnamon, Crème’ D’Argent, English Lop, Flemish Giant, French Lop, Giant Angora, Giant Chinchilla, New Zealand, Palomino, Satin, Silver Fox.

PROJECT:
1. Permits are REQUIRED. You can download the permit form and list from:

2. FAILURE TO ENCLOSE PERMITS WILL RESULT IN AN INVALID ENTRY.

3. Animals should be transported in an adequately sized portable container which is
clean, escape-proof, and includes substrate (bedding).
4. A display card should be attached to the container, including the following:

5. Judging includes a dialogue between the judge and the 4-H exhibitor.
6. Exhibitors are responsible for their own heat source and cords, if the animal

EXHIBITORS. THE FOLLOWING ARE SPECIFIC TO THE POULTRY PROJECT:
1. All NJ exhibition Poultry (waterfowl excluded) shall originate from a Pullorum-free flock, and
have had a Pullorum-Typhoid test within 90 days prior to exhibition. A legible COPY of the U.S
Pullorum-Typhoid clean certificate MUST be enclosed with entries.
2. FAILURE TO ENCLOSE PULLORUM-TYPHOID CLEAN CERTIFICATES WILL
RESULT IN AN INVALID ENTRY. INVALID ENTRIES CANNOT BE JUDGED, AND
WILL NOT RECEIVE A REFUND OF FEES PAID. See Checklist, page 19
3. Animals shown in classes 1-15 cannot be shown in pairs class.
4. Best and Reserve in Show will be selected from Classes 1-15.

SHOWMANSHIP Divisions:
A. Beginner (1st year participating in showmanship at the club, county, state level)
B. Intermediate (2nd year participating in showmanship at the county, state or national level)
C. Experienced (3nd year participating in showmanship at the county, state or national level)
Guidelines:
• There is a $4.00 fee per project and division entry. Please indicate entry status on checklist.
Participants should report to the showmanship area between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Contest
will end at 1:00 pm sharp, please do not wait until the end.
• Members may only compete in one division (A, B or C) per animal area (Rabbit, Cavy or
Poultry). Divisions will be divided into classes by grade. Junior (grades 4-8) and Senior (grades
9-13)
• Poultry participants will be judged individually, with no group format. There will be NO walking
of the birds during Showmanship.
• All participants should wear tucked in, sleeved, collared shirts, which are free of printing. Black
or white long pants/jeans. Lab coats or aprons are also acceptable. Following these guidelines
will assist in achieving full points for appearance.
BREED ID CONTESTS • Contestants will visually inspect rabbit, cavy and/or poultry displays.
• A form will be supplied for supplying the required information.
• Participants will be divided into two age classes. Junior, grade 4-8; Senior, grade 9-13.
• Points will accumulate according to the number of correct answers. Partial credit will be
awarded for incomplete answers.
• An award will be given to the high point participant per age class, per project area.
• There is no entry fee for this contest. THIS CONTEST WILL TAKE PLACE 11 A.M. THRU 2 P.M.
• Please indicate entry status on checklist.
RABBIT and POULTRY JUDGING COMPETITIONS • There is a $4.00 entry fee per animal area. Please indicate entry status on checklist.
• THIS CONTEST WILL TAKE PLACE 11 A.M. THRU 2 P.M.
• Participants will be divided into two age classes. Junior, grade 4-8; Senior, grade 9-13.
• Participants are to judge 2 classes of 4 rabbits or chickens. The contestant’s placements will be
compared to that of the judge. Rabbits will be identified by Coop number, in right ear. Chicken
will be identified by leg band on right leg.
• Contestants will have an 8 minute time limit per class. A 1 minute warning will be given.
• Use of the ARBA Standard of Perfection or APA Standard of Perfection are permitted.
• Once the contestant begins, there is to be no communications other than with the facilitator.
Contestants may not leave the judging area until they are finished judging.
• Contestants will not be permitted to continue if they are handling the animals inappropriately.
This is at the sole discretion of the facilitator.
