Feelings of Home: Folk Culture and Memory speaks of art that serves the purpose or function to preserve collective memory and storytelling within communities. The exhibition explores how history and expression are experienced through movement, textiles, clothing, games, and other modes of representation that intersect with day-to-day experience. The show highlights art works that are created collectively and live most fully alongside people, and explores how those works are transformed by migratory or generational experiences.

Machito & the Impact of the Afro-Cubans at 80Following its highly acclaimed retrospective of Tito Puente, the Hostos Center presents “Machito & the Impact of the Afro-Cubans at 80,” a three-day celebration of the career of the iconic singer and bandleader, and family members, musical director Mario Bauzá and featured singer Graciela. Through concerts, panel discussions, films, workshops and more, the weekend will highlight the orchestra’s impact on Latin music and Latin jazz. The festival is under the artistic direction of Machito’s son, Mario Grillo, Musical Director of The Machito Orchestra; Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist and composer Carlos Henríquez; and the noted Latin music historian Joe Conzo, Sr.

The acclaimed bassist for Wynton Marsalis, and a respected bandleader in his own right, explores the impact of Machito on Latin jazz as well as a youthful take on some Machito classics and Graciela favorites with 12 of New York’s

top young jazz artists and the acclaimed singer Cita Rodríguez.

Mario Grillo leads a program of Machito hits including “Cuban Fantasy” and “Mambo Inn” as well as some rare gems for this historic concert. Taking on the singer’s role is the heralded vocalist Herman Olivera, renowned for his work with Eddie Palmieri.
