Welcome to the Royal St. John’s Regatta.
The Regatta has endured the test of time, and has evolved from a battle of seafaring skills, to the highlight of the summer season in the capital city. A throwback to tradition, the Regatta is a wonderful place to see a familiar face or old friends.
Sport and recreation creates connections, brings people together and builds volunteer capacity for healthy active living. The Royal St. John’s Regatta achieves all of this and more – and while this race remains a St. John’s event, it is the sense of community pride from the city and the neighbouring towns that makes the first Wednesday in August such an important date on the calendar.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is engaged with key stakeholders in physical activity, recreation and sport, and works hard to inspire, promote, and encourage more people to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
To the team behind the scenes – the organizers, volunteers, and sponsors – building an event of this magnitude takes time, hard work and determination. I commend your enthusiasm and dedication to your community.
To the athletes, I wish you luck as you strive for personal bests.
Hon. Dwight BallPremier

2017 ROYAL ST. JOHN’S REGATTA
On behalf of the City of St. John’s, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all residents, participants and visitors to the 2017 Royal St. John’s Regatta. The Royal St. John’s Regatta is North America’s oldest continuous sporting event held at Quidi Vidi Lake in the heart of the east end of the City of St. John’s. The Regatta is more than just a day at the races; it is an integral part of our heritage, our culture and epitomizes the hard work and dedication of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Royal St. John’s Regatta is steeped in traditions that define our unique community and showcase what Newfoundland has become well known for; people who work hard and strive to be the best we can be, while still enjoying our activities and having fun. It is an event held the first Wednesday in August, weather permitting, since 1818, in which we gather at Quidi Vidi Lake to meet friends, old and new, and to enjoy a day full of fun, games and races. Congratulations to all the rowing crews, event organizers and volunteers for your dedication and hard work, and I would like to wish all residents and visitors an enjoyable Regatta Day.

Welcome to the 2019 Royal St. John’s Regatta!
While we had an amazing time celebrating our 200th Anniversary in 2018, it is now time to look toward the future and make new memories.
We are thrilled to celebrate this, the 201st Anniversary Regatta with the tens of thousands of people that flock to Quidi Vidi Lake every year. Whether they’re tourists or locals, everyone is welcomed.
Delicious food and games-of-skill aside, the Regatta has always been a sport-focused event. If it wasn’t for the dedication of our athletes, coxswains and coaches, who spend countless hours training, we wouldn’t have the honour of being the longest running sporting event in North America. As such, we strive to improve the experience for our participants by offering enhancements such as Rowga and Lakeside HIIT Series classes, the “Zen Zone” on Regatta Day, additional events like Ice MeltErg Indoor Rowing Challenge and Fall Fun Regatta, and improvements to our equipment and facilities.
We are so proud of the significant growth in youth participation which indicates that the improvements we have made are resonating.
We are excited to partner with the Craft Brewers Association of NL. Please take a moment to visit the brand-new adult beverage tent, where a portion of funds received will go toward local charities or stop by the 50/50 or one of six cash-wheels, which also support local charities and non-profits.
As always, the enjoyment of our guests is a significant motivator in our planning and we continue to make strides in enhancing the Regatta experience. For a second year in a row our improved ExxonMobil Regatta Eve celebrations will be held and the Go! Store Race Screen on Regatta Day will provide live drone coverage of each race. A special thanks to ALC for their continued support and significant behind the scenes role. We are also proud to have partnered with InclusionNL, a group which increases accessibility for organizations and events – keep an eye out for their blue hats!
None of this would have been possible without the support of our community. Our sponsors and supporters are invaluable to the operations of the Regatta. This includes the first phase of our Quidi Vidi master plan. The results have been remarkable – check out the beautiful new Winner’s Circle! Tremendous thanks to the City of St. John’s, Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and Government of Canada for your partnership in this project which will bring forth a legacy for our community to enjoy for years to come.
It’s now time to experience the 2019 Royal St. John’s Regatta. Whether you’re here to check out the over 150 vendors or cheer on your favourite rowing crew, we hope you enjoy your day at the races – there truly is something for everyone.

2019 ROYAL ST. JOHN’S REGATTA
BACKGROUND TO THE KIM STIRLING MEMORIAL TROPHY
Kim Stirling was the daughter of Geoff and Joyce Stirling of Middle Cove, Newfoundland. Kim was an avid rower who dearly loved the sport and participated in the Royal St. John’s Regatta for four years with the Apache Female Crew. On October 16, 1977, at the age of 19, Kim was tragically killed on the west coast of Newfoundland in an automobile accident.
During her years of rowing, Kim expressed her concern and disappointment to her mother that there was not a female championship race as there was for the male. Consequently, when she died, Geoff and Joyce decided that they would create a female championship trophy in her honour and memory.
With the advice and assistance of John Perlin, then president of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, the artistic services of Frank Warren, were enlisted. Frank was a sculptor who worked in pewter and lived on Bonaventure Avenue in St. John’s. It was decided a shell of delicate proportions mounted on a wooden base would be an appropriate and impressive female trophy. It took a year to complete and the Kim Stirling Memorial was ready for presentation in1979.
A further note of human interest: Kim had mentioned to her mother the last summer she rowed, when she died an old lady after many years of rowing, she would like to be buried on the finish line in the Anglican Cemetery. In the fall of 1977, at the age of 19, she was.

The male championship trophy replaces the former Molson Gerry Angel Memorial Trophy. The trophy is known as “The Molson Coors Gerry Angel Memorial Trophy”. We were extremely pleased that Molson Coors and the Angel Family co-sponsor the trophy.
The original trophy was first introduced in 1954 and served as our male championship trophy for 64 years. In 2017 the trophy reached the limit of its use and was retired. The new Molson Coors Gerry Angel Memorial Trophy was commissioned by the Regatta Committee and is the work of sculptor Morgan MacDonald. Its foundation is the original design for the statue, “The Rower”, which can be seen at the top west end of Quidi Vidi Lake. The statue recognizes and depicts the place our Regatta plays in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2005 the Rower was installed on a site near the Regatta starting line. It is a cast bronze statute depicting a rower in mid stroke, his oar sweeping out a large arc on water. The new trophy is a maquette (scale model) of The Rower statue.
The maquette sits on top of a piece of stainless steel that closely represents the shape of Quidi Vidi Lake, wider at the west end and narrowing slightly at the midpoint to the eastern end. The stainless steel sits on a piece of wood that came from one of the old Pepperell Air Force Base buildings that was torn down in Pleasantville. The Pepperell Air Force Base had operated on the north side of the Lake from 1941 to 1960 and US servicemen participated in the Regatta while stationed here. The two boards on the bottom of the trophy were salvaged from the old O’Brien Farm on Mount Scio Road. The old O’Brien Farm and its buildings were one of the oldest historical buildings in St. John’s.
The foundation of our beautiful Female Championship Trophy, the Kim Stirling Memorial Trophy, is a fixed seat shell similar to the ones we use in our Regatta. When viewed together, the Kim Stirling Memorial Trophy and the Molson Coors Gerry Angel Memorial Trophy demonstrate the historical relationship and continuity of our Royal St. John’s Regatta and our sport of fixed seat rowing in the history of our Province.

THE ROYAL ST. JOHN’S REGATTA WINNERS CIRCLE PARK
BACKGROUND
2018 marked the 200th Anniversary of the establishment of the Royal St. John’s Regatta, the oldest organized sporting event in North America. As part of the recognition of the 200th Anniversary, this year we have designed and erected a new Winners Circle Park. This Park is dedicated to those who have contributed to the success of the Regatta and the development of fixed seat rowing in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador during the past two hundred years.
The Park inner circle has eight bricks which represent the first Wednesday of August each year when the Regatta is traditionally held. The next circle represents the oldest organized sporting event in North America which officially started in 1818 with the break in the circle representing the years when no regatta was held, such as the two world wars and the year of the Great Fire of St. John’s in 1892. This circle also honours the winners of the championship races for the past two centuries. The outer curves represent ripples created by the rowers’ oars and are also done in dark granite and will honour the winners of the championship races for generations to come.
The concrete stones inlaid throughout the Park represent the rowers’ sweeping stroke.
A detailed description of the Winners Circle Park is on the Royal St. John’s Regatta website.
