"Our Land" is the debut concert of a new series by the Southern Cross Soloists Next Gen Artists. The Undine Flute Duo and the Sunrise String Quartet feature in the concerts held on Oct 25 and 27. Located at the newly developed Kenmore Churches of Christ, the concert will intertwine repertoire from the Baroque, Australian contemporary music, and more. The concert will evoke nature, from the dawn to brilliant songbirds. "Our Land" will explore music that celebrates Australian natural landscapes.

HDR Symposium 9 - 5pmWednesday 27 November Nickson RoomUQ School of MusicSt Lucia Campus

We are pleased to announce that the School of Music will host the 2019 HDR Symposium.

This conference is intended to engage HDR students, (PhD and MPhil), Honours students, and faculty in the discussion and exchange of ideas around the theme: Creativity and Collaboration. This will also provide an opportunity for Music HDR students to fulfil their milestone oral presentation requirements.

The conference theme is intentionally broad in order to represent the rich and diverse field of music research and encourage a variety of perspectives, including musicology, music theory and analysis, psychology of music, practice-based and practice-led methods, music education, performance, and composition.

Ann CarewAnn Carew is a fourth year Bachelor of Music

(Honours) student at the University of Queensland,

majoring in violin performance. Outside of

university she also plays viola and harp, performs

in a number of chamber ensembles and orchestras,

and currently runs a successful private teaching

studio, teaching all three instruments to a wide

range of students. Some recent highlights for Ann,

include touring to America to perform at the New

York International Music Festival as Concertmaster

of the Brisbane Regional Youth Orchestra, touring

to China with the UQ School of Music to perform

with the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, and being a

participant in Australian Youth Orchestra programs.

In 2019, she has been an intern and casual player

with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Liam Mallinson

Liam is an enthusiastic young musician who brings

an engaging and emotionally resonant performance

style to the concert stage. He has a passion for

new music and regularly performs new or atypical

works in addition to traditional viola repertoire.

Liam has been commended numerous times for his

emotional engagement with his performances and

for his enthusiasm for communicating through both

physical and musical expression in performance.

Liam’s greatest musical passion is as a performer

of chamber music; in which he regularly performs

as a member of the Sunrise String Quartet and

Pulse Chamber Orchestra. He has had an extensive

performance career thus far, highlights of which

include appearing as a concerto soloist on the

Sydney Opera House stage in 2016 and performing

in the finals for the Richard Pollett Performance

Prize in 2019.

Brahms Quartet 1st movement, Brahms’ Piano Quartet no. 3, in C minor

Rory Smith

Cellist, Rory Smith is an enthusiastic musician with

a passion for chamber music. Recent years have

seen him develop as a solo, chamber, and orchestral

musician, performing across Australia and overseas.

Currently, Rory is an Upbeat Program member with

Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, a Next

Generation Artist with Southern Cross Soloists and

is Principal cellist of UQ’s Symphony Orchestra. This

year Rory has performed as Principal cellist with Pulse

Chamber Orchestra and was invited to join Camerata

on their Regional Tour which included performance

and education-based engagements with rural

communities in Queensland. As a member of the Sunrise String Quartet, he has played in the Redbox series

concert at SLQ with QMF, received mentorship from Tinalley String Quartet and ASQ and recently performed

at the Bangalow Music Festival. In the past three years, Rory has been a finalist in UQ’s Sleath Strings Prize, the

Richard Pollett Prize and the 4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Prize. In 2017, he played with the Xi’an Symphony

Orchestra and he is looking forward to performing with them again later this year. He also has participated

in multiple training programs in chamber and orchestral music for young emerging artists including AYO’s

National Music Camp and the Tinalley Winter Chamber Music School. He is currently in his fourth year of study

at UQ under the tutelage of Patrick Murphy.

Joseph Chan

Joseph Shing Him Chan is a fourth year viola student

studying under Professor Patricia Pollett in the

Bachelor of Music (Honours) Performance Extended

Major at the University of Queensland. He is also a

talented and enthusiastic young conductor who

graduated from Sydney Conservatorium High School

in 2015. Joseph was selected in 2018 to attend three

prestigious Australia Youth Orchestra Music Camp

throughout Australia and successfully auditioned for

Queensland Symphony Orchestra viola internship

program. He went on tour to Sunshine Coast

and Toowoomba with the Orchestra and got the

opportunity to work with world class conductors-

Alondra de la Parra, Daniel Carter and Guy Noble.

During this internship, Joseph also played in a full

opera production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with

Opera Queensland conducted by Johannes Fritzsch.

Celine ChongCeline Chong is an emerging classical musician and

a current student at The University of Queensland.

With a wide variety of musical interests, she has

participated in the Advanced Masterclass program

at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, is a

regular contributor to CutCommon Magazine and

has worked with internationally-acclaimed pianists

Piers Lane, Jayson Gillham, Sergio Tiempo and Orli

Shaham in a variety of masterclass and festival

settings. She has received Dean's Commendations

for academic excellence in each year of her study,

and is eager to use her skills to contribute positively

to the those around her. Using her diverse skill-

set, Celine aspires to have a portfolio career in

music, encompassing performing, teaching, music

journalism, arts administration and chamber music. She is currently completing a Bachelor of Music

(Honours), majoring in piano performance with Dr Anna Grinberg, and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in

English.

Amy HoskingBorn in Durban, South Africa, Amy begun her violin

studies with a solid grounding in the Suzuki method.

Currently in her fourth year at the University of

Queensland, she is studying a Bachelor of Music

Honours under the tuition of Associate Professor

Adam Chalabi. In 2016, Amy attended the Winter

Strings Conference in New York, while last year

she participated in the Sound Thinking chamber

camp. In 2017 and 2019, she performed in a musical

collaboration with the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra

in China and in June this year, she participated in

the Inaugural UQ Winter Chamber Music Camp.

Amy has performed in a masterclass run by Robin

Wilson and has been a finalist in the Richard Pollett

Memorial Prize. Her involvement with orchestral

playing has included concertmaster of the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, participation in

the Pulse Chamber Orchestra, Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestral

national music camp.

Naomi Klazinga

Naomi Klazinga is a third year singer studying a Bachelor of Music (Hons) under the tutelage of Sarah

Crane. She considers herself very lucky to be singing roles such as Pamina, Frasquita and Woglinde with

the UQ Singers. Recently, she won first place in the Ethel Osborne prize in May 2019, having been a finalist

in 2017 and 2018. In 2017 she had the opportunity to be the soprano soloist for the Australian premier

performance of Donna Nobis Pacem, singing with the UQ Chorale and QYO 2. She has participated in

multiple summer music schools, under such teachers as Peter Colemann-Wright and Cheryl Barker, as well

as Margaret Schindler.

Jenny Gunnarsson

Jenny Gunnarsson is a third year Bachelor of Music (Honours) student specialising in classical voice

under the tutelage of Sarah Crane. Throughout this degree, she has had the opportunity to travel to Xi’an,

performing Mahler No. 2 and to Tenterfield, assisting Annie Lower with the kids musical theatre excerpt at

the Cuskelly Winter Music School. Jenny has also performed in a number of opera excerpts, including Erste

and Zweite Dame from The Magic Flute and Mercedes in Carmen, as well as been a finalist for the Ethel

Osborn Prize in 2018 and 2019.

Hainian Yu

Hainian Yu is a third year baritone at the University of Queensland studying under Shaun Brown. In the past

six months, he has performed the role of Dr. Falke in Sound Thinking Opera's fully staged production of Die

Fledermaus, as well as the role of the bass Storm Trooper in Brisbane City Opera's production of Richard

Ferguson's Opera Galactica. He was also the bass soloist in UQ Chorale's recent QPAC performance of

Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Previously, he has played the role of Antonio in The Marriage of Figaro, been

a soloist with the Amadeus Orchestra and been a finalist in both the Nickson and Ethel Osborn Prizes at UQ.

He sings regularly with the UQ Vocalists, and as a dep at St John's Cathedral and St Stephen's Cathedral,

and has obtained a Trinity College Silver medal for outstanding performance in Trinity vocal exams.

Natalie Chow

Natalie Chow is a fourth year Bachelor of Music (Honours) student specialising in piano under the tutelage

of Max Olding and Anna Grinberg. Natalie pursued her piano examinations and completed her certificate

of performance in 2014. In 2017 and 2018, she was also awarded the UQ and Duchesne College Music

Achievement Scholarship, as well as second runner up in the Margaret Nickson Prize for Voice and

Accompaniment. She also had a precious privilege to have a masterclass with the international recognized

singer and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz & Laetitia Grimaldi and a voice and piano accompaniment

masterclass with John Wood, Valerie Dickson.

Matthew Chapman

Matthew Chapman is a third year Bachelor of Music (Honours) student majoring in piano under the tutelage

of Anna Grinberg. Matthew has completed his certificate in performance and was awarded the UQ St Leos

College Music scholarship in 2016. He has also had the privilege to have a masterclass with internationally

recognised Singer and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz and Laetitia Grimaldi.

Connor Willmore is a first year singer studying a Bachelor of Music (Honours).
