Ron Robinson prepares for his sixth season guiding the Lady Pirates. Over the past five seasons, Robinson and his staff have es-tablished the Lady Pirates as one of the top teams in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC). The four-time ACCC South Coach of the Year led the Lady Pirates to three consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 22 title game appearances in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Under Robinson’s direction, the Lady Pirates are 54-6 in the ACCC South Division and have not suf-fered defeat in the south since February 22, 2016. The Lady Pirates have claimed the ACCC South Division Title in five of the past six seasons. On March 7, 2019, Robinson earned career win 100 in a 77-73 overtime victory against Wallace State in the ACCC Semifinal game. Robinson’s squads have been able to put together back-to-back 25 win seasons since 2017. Since 2014, Robinson has coached numerous All Region 22 players, All ACCC players, and 2018 ACCC South Player of the Year, Kelsie Towns.

Before arriving at CVCC, Robinson was a volunteer assistant coach at North Highland Assem-bly in the Columbus Parks and Recreation League from 2009-2012. Robinson assisted North Highland Assembly in claiming the Men’s League Championship in 2009, 2010, 2011, and League Runner-Up in 2012. Robinson is a native of Mobile, AL, where he led Vigor High School to a 33-4 record and Final Four appearance in 2003. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Robinson was no stranger to the ACCC after he spent two seasons as a student athlete at Faulkner State Community College from 2003-2005. Robinson was a 2005 NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention and ACCC All-Region player while at Faulkner State. In 2005, Robinson transferred to play his final two collegiate seasons at Columbus State University (CSU), where he was coached by the late Hall-of-Fame Coach Herbert Greene. While at CSU, Robinson was a two-time Peach Belt All Conference and two-time South At-lantic All-Region player. Robinson received his BS degree in Criminal Justice at CSU.

Michael Woods is in his fourth season with the Lady Pirates as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. He is a graduate of Columbus High School where he was a four-year varsity basketball letterman. Woods is the founder of the Georgia Jaguars Youth Organization – a youth travel basketball program. The Jaguars program was founded in 1999 and has assisted over 70 players with earning basketball scholarships. In 2000, Woods was hired as the assistant girls’ basketball coach at Carver High School in Columbus, GA. He assisted in turning around a program that had gone 2-23 into a state powerhouse. His help led the Lady Tigers to a 101-30 record and a Final Four appearance in a five-year period. The Lady Tigers were also able to win three William Henry Shaw Christmas Tournaments. In 2006, Woods left Carver to become the Athletic Director at the South Columbus Boys and Girls Club. In 2007, he was promoted to Assistant Unit Director and in 2008,

he became the Unit Director at Boys and Girls Club Teen Center. In 2010, Woods left the Boys and Girls Club to start his own business--The One Training Academy. He also refocused his attention on turning the Georgia Jaguars program into one of the elite girls’ basketball programs in the country. Woods is a native of Phenix City, AL. He now resides in Columbus, GA, with his wife, Kimberly.

2019-2020 Lady Pirates Basketball

Page 5: 2019 - 2020 Women’s Basketball · Thomson, GA Natori Hill - 5’10 Freshman Guard Atlanta, GA Jessica Maye - 5’11 Sophomore Forward Birmingham, AL Meet the Team Bria Henry - 5’10

Anew season and new opportunities await the Chattahoochee Valley wom-

en’s basketball team. The 2019-2020 Lady Pirates will have a significantly different look as they return only three sophomores and welcome 12 newcomers; however, expec-tations will remain the same for the Pirate women. Championship contention is the goal and the Pirates are confident that the newcomers will fill the vacancies left by key contributors from the 25-win squad from a year ago. This collection of new talent is arguably one of the best incoming classes the Lady Pirates have had, according to the coaching staff, and they just have to get the ladies accustomed to doing the things the “Lady Pirate way.”

THE BACKCOURTAt guard, Alycia Reese returns as the lone backcourt member from last season. With only 4 starts in 31 games, she contributed 10.6 points per contest and earned ACCC South Division Second Team recognition. Sayah Brooks, a 5’11 shooting guard from Douglas County High School, will be one of the team’s primary scoring options as she provides a unique combination of size and ball-handling to go along with her ex-tended scoring range. The pirate backcourt adds three All-State guards, Diamond Swift (Rockdale H.S., Conyers, GA), Europe Brown (Dodge County H.S., Eastman, GA) and GHSA Class 2A Player of the Year, Destanee Wright (Dodge County H.S., Eastman, GA). To complete the backcourt line-up, the lady pirates welcome J’auana Robinson (Lovejoy H.S., Lovejoy, GA), Madison Clay (Ram-say H.S., Birmingham, AL), and Natori Hill (Mays H.S., Atlanta, GA).

THE FRONTCOURTWith no player listed above 5’11, the Lady Pirates will rely on the length and athleti-cism of a fiery group of forwards to provide

a physical presence. Sophomores Bria Henry and Jessica Maye will lead the way for the gang of versatile forwards. Leading a group of newcomers who will assist Henry and Maye are GHSA All-State honorees Jar-dyn Alexander (Stone Mountain H.S., Stone Mountain, GA) and Nia Allen (Valdosta H.S., Valdosta, GA). Alexander and Allen are both dynamic forwards who should provide an immediate impact for the pirate women after averaging 16.1 points and 8.3 rebounds and 13.1 points and 10.2 rebounds, respectively, for their high school squads. Rounding off the roster are Lashuana Coley (Dodge County H.S., Eastman, GA), Taschanda Castlin (La-mar County H.S., Barnesville, GA), and Jami-ah Lane (Thomson H.S., Thomson, GA).

THE SCHEDULEThe Lady Pirates will have another challeng-ing 30-game schedule featuring eight contests against teams that finished in the NJCAA Top 25.
