Supporting Students Through Interest and Gift Pathways

Rainier Christian High School offers signature courses aligned to student’s interests,

God-given gifts, and satisfy WA state graduation requirements. A student’s

understanding about their pathway develops over time. The first step is to learn about

each pathway and complete a comprehensive gift-mix profile—found here.

A teacher’s counsel and the classes taken in high school offer value-added insights

about a student’s gift mix. Parents, pastors, relatives, friends, and life experiences

also play vital roles in the discovery process.

Our course descriptions indicate the pathway(s) aligned to each class to aid students

and parent’s decision-making. A check mark appears in all pathway boxes for

required classes. The core-subject electives, specialty electives, and internships, are

marked according to our pathway’s design.

programs, but avoids specific denominational teachings. In addition to Bible instruction,

students participate in weekly chapel, and annual outreach activities.

The adjective phrase, "Whole Person," in our mission statement is intentional.

Students are much more than containers in which we pour the right Christian ideas,

facts, and doctrines into to ensure proper behavior. The agency of Christian

education runs wider and deeper than cognitive development. It is about formation,

including character, desires and affections.

At RCHS, integrating faith and learning, nurturing desires, and influencing affections

reshape the whole person. Jesus inspired our mission statement’s essence in the

great commandment, “That you love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind,

and strength,” Mk.12:30. RCHS aims toward that purpose through academics,

athletics, and extra-curricular activities for the Glory of God.

Art COURSE TITLE—Art 1

Pathway: MEPS A&C STEMM B&E TNT

Course Description: This art class is multi-faceted. Everywhere you look art has been a part of everything you see. In this class you will learn how to not only draw, but how it’s used in everyday life. Ever wonder how to follow instructions in designing a room or a yard? How to sculpt stone or Cake? Yes you will learn decorating as well as get to eat your design.( After it’s graded of course.) This will help you explore areas in art you didn’t even think of. You can become a Designer, Painter, and Artist with your own flair. The first day of class I ask what do you expect and or want to learn in this class. I want to teach you something new and exciting each day you are here. You have to take at least 2 credits in art. Why not take it with me. I would love to teach you.

Course Description: So you’re young and possibly young in your Christian Faith as well. You desire to get to know more about God, the Bible and what the Christian Life is all about. Well, you have come to the right class, my Freshman friend. This class will help explain what it means to be a Christian and how to grow in your faith, knowledge and wisdom of Jesus Christ. You will learn about God, Christ & the Holy Spirit as well as prayer, church & understanding your spiritual gifts. This is a great class to learn and grow in the Christian Life. Come grow with us.

Bible COURSE TITLE—Freshmen Bible: Developing Christian Character




Course Description: So now that you know what the theology of the Christian Life is…how in the world do I live it out? If you find it tough to understand how to live out your faith in the real world at home-school-church-neighborhood then this class is for you. In this class you and your class mates will explore a whole bunch of Christian Character Traits that you can start putting into practice in your life like Love, Courage, Faith, Obedience and Self-Control. This class comes with great stories of Great men and women of God right from the Bible and real world who practiced these and other positive Christian Character Traits in their life for the glory of God. If you want to positively grow in your relationship to God, this class is for you.

COURSE TITLE—Sophomore Bible: Old Testament Survey




Course Description: Explore the timeless truths that God has revealed in these amazing 39 books. We will come away with an increased appreciation for the foundational events that prepared for the coming of Jesus Christ. During our time together, we will learn the major themes and key persons that God used in His unfolding drama of the redemption of mankind. Bring your questions, and be prepared to have discussions that will challenge, inspire, and help you to grow your faith! (Ps 119:97).

COURSE TITLE—Sophomore Bible: New Testament Survey




Course Description: Where do you go to find answers about life’s many challenges and concerns? What do you believe about relationships, career, money, stress, entertainment, food, health, etc? More importantly, what does God think about each of these? In our Survey of the New Testament, our class will be structured in a way that gives you a chance to explore what the Bible says through examining the key themes and passage of each of the 27 books. We will also engage in meaningful classroom discussions about how to apply these truths to your life (James 1:22). We will see that Jesus Christ, though His life, death, resurrection and promised return is a sufficient foundation for all that life has to offer.

Bible COURSE TITLE—Junior Theology I: Systematic Theology




Course Description: Who’s your hero? Is it God, your creator? Do you love God and want to grow deeper in understanding him but don’t know how? This class is for you. Starting with an understanding of the Bible as the living Word of God you will build on your understanding of who God is and how he has revealed himself to mankind through his written revelation. You will gain an understanding of how and why mankind is separated from God by exploring the doctrine of Sin. But wait…there is good news because you will also gain an understanding of who Christ & the Holy Spirit are and how they fit into God’s plan for the redemption of mankind from Sin. And finally you will study where you fit into God’s plan of redemption through a study of the Church. It is the greatest story ever told. This class will literally change your life for God’s greater glory.

COURSE TITLE—Junior Theology II: Developing Christian World View




Course Description: This is a class about ideas only in this class they are called World Views. How do you interpret life in light of your Christian Faith? What shapes how you respond to issues that are shaping our society, our country, our world. What is the Christian Response to war, government, abortion, LGBTQ issues, legalization of drugs, co-habitation outside of marriage? These are tough issues that Christian young people need answers for. This is the class where we will wrestle with them and see what God has to say from the revelation in his Word, The Bible. You will examine other world views such as secularism and communism, post-modernist thought as well as other world religions. This class will equip you as a Christian believer to have answers for the hope that is in you (1 Peter 3:15)

COURSE TITLE—Bible and Philosophy (Designed for 11th and 12th grade students)




Course Description: We are told to worship God with our minds. The Bible—God’s word—gives us answers, but do you feel safe asking questions? Do you want to explore all the possibilities instead of just being told what you as a Christian should think? If you are not a Christian, would you like to examine the evidence for the Christian religion without feeling intimidated? Bible and Philosophy will provide you with a fresh look at the Bible and allow you to discern between the Bible and other paths of human thought.

Bible COURSE TITLE—Spiritual Growth: Senior Girls Bible




Course Description: Everyone seems to have their own sense of what “Truth” is. Let’s learn from an open Bible that God is the source of Truth and then align your life story with God promises. We will refrain from relying on “Google” solutions to resolve teenage stress and anxiety, and focus on biblical answers and applications that are as true today as they were when the Bible was written.

COURSE TITLE—Spiritual Growth: Senior Guys Bible




Have you ever wondered if the Bible speaks to things like the environment, government, abortion or war? Seniors in Spiritual Growth will find, through studying God's Word, the enormity of direction they are seeking in their lives as they get ready to encounter the plethora of postmodern worldviews that are not centered on absolute truth.

English COURSE TITLE——Freshmen English and Literature




Do you want to be a communicator? Do you want to create art with your words? Do you want to have an extensive vocabulary and be able to use it masterfully? Do you want to be able to intelligently discuss classic works of literature? Then this is the course for you! In English class, you will watch your writing skills soar to new heights as you communicate your observations through the written word. You will devour and discuss the works of Dickens and Shakespeare, and experience the escapades of Bilbo (The Hobbit) and Pip (Great Expectations). You will begin an extensive study of English vocabulary with Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots that will continue throughout high school. English is necessary for all pathways and interests. Be a scholar and commit to learning, and this course will take you far!

English COURSE TITLE—Sophomore English and Literature




Course Description: Every movie, every story has been a reinvention of something from the past. Literature is man’s search for truth and meaning, and how he makes choices when all paths are difficult. Poetry, historical fiction, novels, and the plays of Shakespeare help us see that our problems have been there before us. You’ll learn how to look for mirrors and models of human nature, and the writing of 5-paragraph essays will help you learn to communicate and organize your thoughts.

COURSE TITLE—English 11 and American Literature




Course Description: Students dig deep into classic American literature while developing powerful writing skills. This course increases student’s ability to persuade and add new skills to watch your writing soar. We will actively discuss major and minor themes from the works of Poe and Hawthorne, and experience the escapades of The Count of Monte Cristo and Huckleberry Finn. You will further your knowledge of English vocabulary by continuing to absorb and apply new Greek and Latin roots.

COURSE TITLE—College English



Credits: 0.5 1.0 Fee: $360 if enrolling for concurrent credit with NNU

Course Description: Most of you plan to attend college after graduation*; others will be wrapping up their compulsory education in this final senior year. One of the tools you will need in the future is to write clearly and concisely. College English will give you the tools to write an essay with confidence. Secondly, much of what you have learned for the past five years can be drawn together as we look at literature, history, human thought, and the Bible. This class is to be the capstone of you education and will enable you to leave RCHS equipped with the tools to meet tomorrow’s challenges in the humanities.

*Students in Senior English have the option of enrolling in English 1020, and receiving college credit in English through Northwest Nazarene University’s concurrent credit program. This is done by enrolling online, paying a small tuition, and maintaining a grade of C or better.

Foreign Languages COURSE TITLE—American Sign Language 1




Course Description: Everyone needs to know sign language.( Only the good kind) learn to talk in class without speaking a word. ASL is not only an official language it is really fun to learn. My students think they should get P.E., Drama, and Language credit all at the same time. Besides being a real language for the deaf and hard of hearing it is beautiful when hearing and the deaf combine it with music. Come join me and have an amazing year learning to speak with your hands. You need 2 years of foreign language anyway why not get this credit having fun.

COURSE TITLE—American Sign Language 2




Course Description: The second year of American Sign Language takes on a life of its own. During this year of course you learn more vocabulary and work on your finger spelling. Not just that you begin to write and tell stories all in ASL. You will learn to read signing as fast as a deaf student. You also get the freedom to block your own songs for the two required programs throughout the year. There will be a Christmas program with black lights and white gloves and then the exciting spring program in May. We have more fun than you can imagine. It’s the best way to learn. If you love it you can continue and look into ASL as a lucrative occupation in your future.

COURSE TITLE—Spanish 1




Course Description:¿Cómo estás? ¿Hablas español? ¿Dónde está el baño? Is it all “Greek” to

you? This is your great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language in an

interactive class environment. Spanish 1 provides basic vocabulary and grammar, including

enjoyable in-class videos and games. Join us as we step in together to know the fundamentals

and the fun of the cultures that utilize the Spanish language.

Spanish 2 includes more in-depth looks at communicating about past, present and future events, expanded vocabulary, cultural phenomena and higher levels of in-class dialogue. If you would love to take this beautiful language around the world with you or use it to work with Spanish-speaking communities in your hometown, this is the class for you!

Students in this course will be prepared to take their Spanish abilities to a real-world level to use the language in the workplace, in missions, in travel abroad and in their own communities

Health and Physical Education

COURSE TITLE—Health Science




Course Description: Imagine that you were given one brand new car at 16 years of age that you had to use for the rest of your life. Would you take better care of the car? You and I are given one body, the better care we take of the one body God has given us will enable us to not only enjoy a fuller life, but we will, God willing, be able to enjoy it for a longer life. Students will be challenged to analyze their own health practices (mental, psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual) and apply good health principles accordingly.

Health and Physical Education COURSE TITLE—Physical Education




Course Description: Take a break from the rigors of classroom academics and engage in physical activities that will enhance your physical and mental capacity in the classroom. Studies show that physical exercise serves to increase mental focus and cognitive learning. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of sports and games to understand the play, rules and abilities needed to collaboratively participate and compete in a way that will honor Christ, build character and increase their skill level across the board. In addition, Physical Education will prepare one for life-long fitness, bringing students the opportunity to “honor God with their bodies”.

Mathematics COURSE TITLE—Algebra 1




Course Description: Hey problem solvers, want to learn some new skills? You have come to the right place. In this class we will take the basic algebra concepts and apply them to real world scenarios. You will solve equations, work with variables, and learn new graphing skills. This course will stretch your problem-solving skills and develop mathematical thinking.

COURSE TITLE—Geometry


Prerequisites: Algebra 1 Semester Year


Course Description: Afraid of heights! Learn how to measure a tree without climbing it or the height of a building without using a ladder. Improve your reasoning skills and learn to gather information and organize it to prove a point! All of this while studying geometric shapes and their properties. Line, angle, triangle, circle and other words will sound familiar. Other terms like chord, dodecagon, vertical angles, fractals, etc. Come and expand your geometric vocabulary!

How many people are employed? Unemployed? Learn to make numerical conjectures about these and other questions. You will help develop a survey that your teachers and fellow students will take.You will be able to put together an analysis of the information that you gather as an end of year project.

Course Description: Learn some of the secrets of science and engineering. Explore techniques in algebra, geometry and trigonometry to develop functions and use them to solve novel problems in other fields. Engage with matrix algebra, vectors, polar equations and parametric equations. Discover the value of limits. Your graphing calculator will accelerate understanding problems that would make mathematicians from past generations jealous!

Course Description: Explore rates of change related to rockets, baseballs and other phenomena. Anticipate your bank balance at different compounding rates and intervals. Investigate population trends and growth. Review and deepen your understanding of functions and limits. You will develop an understanding and explore the use of derivatives and integrals to answer many questions in the fields of engineering, medicine, business, architecture, science and numerous other fields of study.

Occupational/Technology COURSE TITLE—Computer Science Essentials




Course Description: Computer Science Essentials (CSE) empowers students to develop computational thinking skills. Students who take CSE will have many opportunities for creative expression and exploration in topics of personal interest, whether it be through app development, web design, or connecting computing with the physical world. The course engages students in computational thinking practices and collaboration strategies, as well as industry standard tools authentic to how computer science professionals work. Students will learn about professional opportunities in computer science and how computing can be an integral part of all careers today. CSE introduces students to coding fundamentals through an approachable, block-based programming language where they will have early success in creating usable apps. As students sharpen their computational thinking skills, they will transition to programming environments that reinforce coding fundamentals by displaying block programming and text-based programming side-by-side.

COURSE TITLE—Cybersecurity




Course Description: Cybersecurity helps students identify cybersecurity threats and protect against them. They will also learn how to detect Cybersecurity intrusions and respond to attacks. The design of the course exposes students to the ever growing and far-reaching field of cybersecurity. Students accomplish this through problem-based learning, where students role-play as cybersecurity experts and train as cybersecurity experts do. Cybersecurity gives students a broad exposure to the many aspects of digital and information security, while encouraging socially responsible choices and ethical behavior. It inspires algorithmic thinking, computational thinking, and especially, “outside-the-box” thinking. Students explore the many educational and career paths available to cybersecurity experts, as well as other careers that comprise the field of information security. Whether seeking a career in the emerging field of cybersecurity or learning to defend their own personal data or a company’s data, students in Cybersecurity establish an ethical code of conduct while learning to defend data in today’s complex cyberworld.

Occupational/Technology COURSE TITLE—Introduction to Business & Management/Leadership

Course Description: Start your own business! Be your own boss! Yes, you can!! You are already involved in business. and you may never have known! "How is that?" you may ask. We all buy products and services. In business, we are called, "consumers". We all consume, or sell, or provide services, or produce (and all combinations of these). Understanding business will better prepare you to fully participate in society and may lead you to a possible future career path!

Become a leader and manage people and projects! We will always be leaders and followers. What does it mean to become a leader? How do you motivate people? How do you plan things and then make the plan happen? We will look at the basics of leadership/management and we will work on how to present oneself in public and in a leadership/management role with a goal of helping you to achieve future personal success! In our class, we will learn about the fundamentals of business and how business impacts our lives. We will look at basic principles of leadership and how we can lead ourselves and others as we follow the Lord. We will study ethics and how to consider Biblical right/wrong as well as mandated, legal requirements.

Science COURSE TITLE—Biology



Credits: 0.5 1.0 Fee: $10 Lab Fee

Course Description: You are fearfully and wonderfully made! To more fully appreciate and understand this, you will work in teams to identify characteristics that all living organisms share on our finely tuned planet to sustain life. You will collaborate with your peers to examine and identify similarities and unique features among cellular structures within animal and plant tissues. You will use hereditary principles governing all organisms to identify how physical traits are passed down. You will collaborate with your peers to research and present the history, transmission, prevention, treatment, and government recommendations to limit the impact of an infectious disease. Dissecting a bullfrog will conclude this course to identify internal anatomical structure similarities and differences between amphibians and humans.

Science COURSE TITLE—Conceptual Physics




Course Description: Do you want to stimulate your higher-level thinking skills, and get the best from your own brain? In Conceptual Physics you will build your understanding through exploration, develop comprehension through demonstrations, questioning, and applying what you have learned through a variety of projects. Physics will teach you how to think. You will learn how to see physics everywhere as a part of everything you do. So come and enjoy!

COURSE TITLE— Marine Biology




Course Description: Explore the fascinating world of ocean life! Begin the year by taking a virtual tour of the ocean floor off the Washington/Oregon coast to identify deep sea organisms and understand their dependence upon deep sea volcanoes. Assess the effectiveness of behaviors employed by bioluminescent organisms as they hunt and evade predators in a world of darkness. Express your creative side to design an artistic representation of a hydrothermal vent community, kelp forest ecosystem, and salmon life cycle. Analyze how ocean currents, waves, and tides affect the behavior of marine organisms and sustain life. Identify the purpose of unique anatomical features observed while dissecting a clam, squid, perch, and dogfish.

COURSE TITLE—Principles of Biomedical Science




Course Description: Connect core concepts of biology and medicine to determine causal factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, you will examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects in this course introduce you to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing you to design your own experiments to solve problems.

Social Studies COURSE TITLE—AP US History




Course Description: Advanced Placement United States History is designed as the FBI Academy of History, meant to provide you with the investigatory and analytical skills, as well as the factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in United States History. You will analyze historical material, synthesize your own ideas, and evaluate those of others. The AP United States History course will develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions, with a Christian view, on the basis of an informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format. *PARENTS AND STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: This course is equivalent to an introductory/survey COLLEGE class. It is designed to be taught at this level, different from traditional honors or seminar high school classes. Many high school students find it to be difficult and demanding. Please keep this in mind as you traverse through the course and continually evaluate your expectations for your performance in this class. Expectations should remain at a high level but understand you are being asked to perform at a higher level than you may have been accustomed to in the past. Course Description: Buckle up as we ride the Class IV whitewater rapids of the US Government. Our journey of discovery through the people, politics, and policy will showcase the workings of our government—from top to bottom. Come prepared to analyze relevant primary and secondary source documents to better understand a uniquely American institution. As we shoot the rapids of Government, you will broaden your social and political perspectives through a Christian view. Each of you will be greatly encouraged to personally apply the principles of this course to your own life.

Social Studies COURSE TITLE—US History




Course Description: Through this portal you are entering the roller coaster of US History. This class will be a journey of discovery that will sweep you past “Manifest Destiny,” and drop you into the turmoil that leads us into a tug-of-war that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of this country. You will then be rocketed up and through a time capsule that will have you gasping for air, and praying for a brief moment to gather yourself up before diving into periods of Reconstruction, Reformation, and American Imperialism. You will experience the concept of Isolationism, and face past global conflicts that have impacted American society and policies. Turning a corner, we loop around Civil Rights, The Peace Movement and study a variety of cultural forces. This Roller Coaster called American History is colorful and exciting. Understanding where we came from, and how we got here, develops appreciation for the democratic process. Think of it this way - “To be successful you must accept all challenges that come your way. Course Description: Sharpen your investigative skills and sense of discovery through World History. Come explore recurring themes of the human experience common to civilizations around the globe. Immerse yourself in significant events, ideas, and movements from a historical perspective. Apply a Christian Worldview, as you delve into the ways societies address continuity and change. Learn how societies grapple with the complex realities of war, peace, internal stability, strife, and the development of institutions.

Specialty Electives COURSE TITLE—Choir




Course Description: Bring your voices and apply skills to create and experience a musical ensemble. Learn to convey musical interpretation with the use of dynamics and phrasing, while

incorporating facial expression and movement for refined presentation. Student will understand how a musical composition is structured through listening and analysis, and identify repetition in musical scores aurally and visually.

Course Description: You are in your final stretch of high school, ready to take on the world as an independent adult; are you ready to handle the financial responsibilities of being an independent adult? COURSE TITLE—Life Skills




Course Description: Bake a pie, fix a faucet, prepare a budget; these are just a few of the things you will learn in RCHS Life Skills class. So many things in life are learned outside the typical classroom. Students will gain the resources and skills to discover new interests, prepare for a career, save money on home repairs, and build successful relationships. This course will help students get ready for post high school independence.

COURSE TITLE—Worship Team




Course Description: Are you interested in Worship Ministry, Music and Sound Technology? This course is a great opportunity to put your talents to good use! The Worship Team course unites folks from all backgrounds under the common goal of preparing and leading a worship service and growing spiritually as a team. Not a singer? That’s okay! We invite all with an interest in playing instruments, singing, running sound or running visuals and lighting to join us. We have fun, and we get the job done in this highly interactive course!

Specialty Electives COURSE TITLE—Introduction to Business & Management/Leadership




Course Description: Start your own business! Be your own boss! Yes, you can!! You are already involved in business. and you may never have known! "How is that?" you may ask. We all buy products and services. In business, we are called, "consumers". We all consume, or sell, or provide services, or produce (and all combinations of these). Understanding business will better prepare you to fully participate in society and may lead you to a possible future career path!

Become a leader and manage people and projects! We will always be leaders and followers. What does it mean to become a leader? How do you motivate people? How do you plan things and then make the plan happen? We will look at the basics of leadership/management and we will work on how to present oneself in public and in a leadership/management role with a goal of helping you to achieve future personal success! In our class, we will learn about the fundamentals of business and how business impacts our lives. We will look at basic principles of leadership and how we can lead ourselves and others as we follow the Lord. We will study ethics and how to consider Biblical right/wrong as well as mandated, legal requirements.

Internships COURSE TITLE—App & Game Programming




Course Description: Designed for students interested in App & Game Design, Programming & Coding. Interns will learn App and Game development using real-world computer programming languages including Microsoft Small Basic, Visual Basic, Visual C#, Oracle Java & Unity 3D C#. The App & Game Programming Internship can be either a semester-long or can be extended to a year-long internship with prior teacher approval. The internship engages students in computational thinking practices as well as industry standard tools authentic to how App & Game Programming professionals learn and work. Training will be provided using BibleByte Books & Games award winning App & Game Programming tutorials. Concurrent enrollment with OR prior completion of Computer Science Essentials is a prerequisite course to this internship. Transportation is not needed as the Internship will be held on-site at RCHS in the Computer Lab.

Internships COURSE TITLE—Early Childhood Education




Course Description: Designed for students with interest in working with 1-5 year old children in

RCS preschool programs. Students assist preschool staff with preparation, teaching, learning

state guidelines, and nurture our youngest Mustangs. Two internship sites are available, LPPC or

MVPC. Personal transportation required.

COURSE TITLE—K-3 Education, Teaching




Course Description: Designed for students with interest in teaching and working with children in

K-3rd grade. Students assist an RCS staff member with preparation, teaching, learning about the

5-D instructional model, and complexities of working in a school setting. Two internship sites are

available, KVE or MVE. Personal transportation required.

COURSE TITLE—Information Technology




Course Description: Designed for students with capacity and interest in working in IT support.

Gain experience in network administration, and computer and technical support. Students assist

RCS Technology Director to meet the ongoing demand of RCS technology. Personal

transportation required as internship sites include the district office and all RCS campuses.

Course Description: Designed for students with an interest in marketing and the practicalities of a

Christian context. Students assist Black Diamond Camp staff with marketing efforts and connect

with local pastors and learn about support ministries in our area.
