n behalf of our young men, I extend to you, the alumni, families and friendsof Roman Catholic High School, our heart-felt thanks for your encourage-ment, advice and support over this past year. And what an exciting year ithas been!

We continue to attract some of the brightest young men from throughout theDelaware Valley. Presently, over 122 different elementary schools are repre-sented in our student body. The 'Purple & Gold' can now be seen in everyneighborhood of the City, the surrounding counties and the states of New Jersey & Delaware as well!Academically, our young men are being exposed to a curriculum which is rigorous and relevant. With an increas-ing reliance on technology, our distinguished faculty is exposing their students to a 21st Century education whereachievement is expected and mediocrity is not accepted.

The members of the graduating Class of 2009 earned a record-setting 18 million dollars in academic grants andscholarships to post secondary institutions of higher learning. This is the largest amount of grants and scholarshipsof any secondary school in the City of Philadelphia.

Please know that the support you give to Roman Catholic is an investment in the future, not only for our youngmen but for our city and nation as well. The costs associated with a quality Catholic education are at times daunt-ing. Yet the support we have received from alumni and friends has been humbling. It is our goal to ensure theyoung men entrusted to our care, receive an education that is second to none! The sterling reputation that CatholicHigh now enjoys is the result of so many individuals stepping up and committing their time, talent and treasure toensure a bright future for our students and our school.

In early Fall, the Archdiocese announced the pending closures of Northeast Catholic and Cardinal Dougherty HighSchools. These proud schools boast noble traditions and outstanding legacies. Their alumni and present studentsare as passionately committed to their school as we are to ours. Yet, the reality of declining enrollment and budg-et deficits could not be overlooked.

This should be a clarion call to us. While our school remains strong, we must never grow complacent or smug. Theeducational environment today is very competitive. Prospective students are looking for the best. While we cer-tainly value our tradition and legacy, we must constantly look ahead, improving our academics, ensuring compet-itive athletics and broadening our extra and co-curricular offerings.

As we celebrate our 120th anniversary year, we are grateful for the many loyal benefactors who are ensuring abright future for our beloved Alma Mater. May our blessed Lord, continue to reward you for your generosity.

Sincerely,

(Rev.) Joseph W. Bongard ’77President/Rector

POSITION:Guidance Director

GRADE SCHOOL:Cornwells Elementary and Cecilia SnyderMiddle School (Bensalem)

HIGH SCHOOL:Bensalem High School

COLLEGE:Moravian College BA Psychology; LaSalle University MATheology (Pastoral Counseling)

WHAT DO FIND TO BE THE MOST UNIQUE ASPECT OF THEROMAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY?

The sense of brotherhood between the students and their love of theschool. We have a very diverse group of young men who respect eachother and truly work together and help each other.

AS THE DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBETHE PASSION OF THE ROMAN STUDENTS IN GAINING ACCEPTANCE TO COLLEGE?

To put it into perspective, by the second week of school Vince Tarducci'02 and I will have over 100 appointment requests from our seniorsapplying to college. This enthusiasm to get started best illustrates theirpassion.

HOW DOES THE RCHS GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT CATER TO THEVARIOUS NEEDS OF THE YOUNG MEN AT ROMAN CATHOLIC?

To interview each student individually every year. We have a greatteam of counselors that helps our young men grow and succeed in allaspects of their lives. Also, the Big Brother mentoring program has real-ly helped meet the needs of our new students. Seniors sit down andspeak with their assigned freshmen about 3 times a year to make surethey understand the rules, know where to get help with schoolwork, andencourage them to join activities. Between the Big Brothers, our fresh-man counselor, Helen Durando, and our study skills teachers, RosettaMelaragni and John Kola have given each freshman a solid foundationfrom which to grow. At the end of each year, seniors to complete a sur-vey rating the office on various areas and provide feedback on how tomake the guidance process more effective. This feedback on what worksand what doesn't from these young men really enhances our effective-ness.

WHAT SETS A ROMAN EDUCATION APART FROM THE REST?

A big factor is the faculty. The teachers truly want to do what they canto help students be successful. They often go over and above what isexpected. The faculty sincerely cares about the well being of the studentsand has worked with guidance to make sure students are getting theassistance they need. The students themselves also make a difference. They are willing to help fellow students and truly care about each other. This peer to peer aspect adds a special value to the Roman experience.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEARAND THE CLASS OF 2010?

To have each young man sit down one on one with a counselor and tocontinue to improve our method of communicating information to boththe students and parents through the use of parent email, our webpageand handouts along with incorporating our Ning site (an online web-site allowing Roman students and faculty to communicate easily).

Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Enhances the Guidance Process at Roman

WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE THE MOST UNIQUE ASPECT

OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY?

I believe the most unique aspect of the Roman Catholic High Schoolcommunity is the strong relationship between the administration andfaculty with students. Also, the 120 years of tradition and excellencegives Roman a distinguished look amongst all other high schools. Iam proud to be a part of the Roman family.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE ROMAN STUDENTS ARE SO SUCCESSFUL IN GAINING ACCEPTANCE INTO COLLEGE?

I would describe the Roman student as passionate in gaining accept-ance to college. Every time I am in the Guidance Office it is always

packed with students having questions about the college process orcurious about colleges they have chosen. I find everyone’s enthusiasmcontagious.

HOW DOES THE RCHS GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT CATER TO THE VARIOUS NEEDS OF THE YOUNG MEN AT ROMAN CATHOLIC?

I believe the guidance department is a great resource for students whoseek help in the college process. Mrs. Desmond is very helpful andalways makes time for students at any time in the day, whether it beearly in the morning or as she is about to leave. She is very approach-able, with her door always open.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR?

My goals for the upcoming school year are to be accepted by the collegeof my choice with scholarships and to be ranked in the top 26 of thesenior class.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR YOUR CLASSMATES?

My dreams and aspirations are for the students of the class of 2010to accomplish dreams in life.

WHAT SETS A ROMAN EDUCATION APART FROM THE REST?

A Roman education is priceless. The students at Roman want to behere. The moment a freshman enters, a bond is formed with faculty, administration and fellow students. Each nurtures the other.Students and teachers are always working closely together and therelationship amongst students with faculty is strong. I believe thatRoman starts preparing students for college from freshman year andwhen senior year comes around, these students are fully prepared togo to higher education. Another aspect of success in Roman studentsis the amount of college scholarships received by Roman seniors, which is the highest of all Catholic Archdiocesan high schools.

WHY AND IN WHAT WAYS WOULD YOU SAY THAT FAMILY ISAN IMPORTANT PART OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC HIGHSCHOOL COMMUNITY?

Tom: To me, RCHS is an extension of my family and that is what acommunity should be. Once you become a part of or a member ofcommunity then a unique bond - a brotherhood is formed. My fatherwent to Roman and I was happy that I could follow in his footsteps.Matt: Family definitely plays an important role in the RomanCatholic High School community. Generations of families haveattended Roman, which shows how important the school is to indi-vidual families. There is a special bond that not only exists among theRoman students, but also among Roman's faculty, staff, and alumni.

It shows through every aspect of life at Catholic High; people don'tjust become friends, they become brothers and part of a family. Myown family played a vital role in my attending Roman. If it were notfor the influence of my dad, grandfather, and uncles, I definitely wouldnot have attended Roman. Attending Roman has helped me meet avariety of new and different people and has helped me develop as aperson and a student.Tom: That kind of sums it up. If you do or don't have a family -Roman is family.

WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCESAT CATHOLIC HIGH?

Tom: I do not have just one memorable moment - I have the pleasure ofhaving many both during and after I attended RCHS.Steven: I don't have just one memorable moment at Roman, but I cannarrow it down to the two most important. The first would be the nightI was inducted into the National Honors Society. That night was veryspecial to me, because I got to share it not only with my brother Cahillitesbut with my father (class of 1972) and my grandfather (Class of 1936)on his 90th birthday. That is a night I will remember for the rest of mylife. The other most memorable moment would have to be my Kairosretreat, which brought me closer to my brothers and school.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE SETS ROMAN APART FROM THE RESTIN TERMS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION?

Tom: Roman is unique in the sense that students go to Romanbecause they want to go to Roman. Roman is not a diploma assem-bly line and it is not so easy to get lost in the numbers there. It pro-vides many opportunities for students to grow and expand theirboundaries. It takes the time and effort to help nurture individual stu-dents to grow in their own “faith and knowledge.”Steven: In the terms of Catholic Education there is a respect for fac-ulty, staff, and fellow students that isn't anywhere else. This is not justa school community, but a Catholic Community as well. CardinalRigali, Bishop McFadden, and alumnus Bishop Daniel Thomas '77always make the students of Catholic High feel welcome as their“neighbors.” To me no other archdiocesan school can have the sameexperiences as us. Who else altar serves for the Cardinal? Kairos andretreats are also a big part of this Catholic Experience that neitherpublic nor some private schools have the opportunity to experience. Icouldn't be happier with a Catholic education and am thankful to allthose who made it possible.

IF YOU COULD USE ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE ROMAN,WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Tom: “Impossible” because it's impossible to describe RCHS in oneword. There is not one word that I know which would incorporate -unique, diverse, brotherhood, tradition, pride, family, reputation, faith, knowledge, loyalty…Steven: “Home.” I entered Roman a shy and quiet freshman, and thosewho know me now can tell you that's no longer the case. I have settledin here and truly view it as my home and everyone in it as family.Giving tours to returning alums I see that this feeling that I havetowards Roman is shared by men of many generations and only getsstronger as time goes on. Catholic High will always be home to me.

WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE THE MOST UNIQUE ASPECT OF THE

ROMAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY?The students, my peers, are the most unique aspect of the Roman commu-nity. It has been a great experience for me to meet people from different partsof the city who brought their own “diversity” - views, activities, likes anddislikes with them to Roman. This aspect of Roman prepares students totransition well into the future, in a very diverse population. Diversity is def-initely an indicator that shows how we grow from boys to men during ourtime at Roman.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PASSION AND THE PROCESSINVOLVED IN GAINING ACCEPTANCE TO COLLEGE?The passions of Roman students in gaining acceptance into college is a“love-hate” situation. The process that annoys students the most - the

application process - is the most important. It's lengthy, time-consum-ing, and causes lots of headaches. However, the relief, the sensation ofrelaxation that we as students feel after the process is complete thatmakes it all worthwhile. Once it is over, we sit back and wait for theacceptances. Overall, I think we learn to enjoy it as a whole process, not just paperwork.

HOW DOES THE RCHS GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT CATER TO THEVARIOUS NEEDS OF THE YOUNG MEN AT ROMAN CATHOLIC?The Guidance Department helps ease the process with an organizedsystem that works. They tend to our needs and help us every day withevery step in the college process. We have to do our parts as students, but they make sure they guide us where we want to go.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR?To make the most of my senior year and remain active among my peersat Roman Catholic High School and after graduation become part ofthe greatest alumni association in the country. I want to show andshare the experience that I have had over my four years here with theunderclassmen, my brothers.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR YOUR CLASSMATES?I want my classmates to enjoy their time at Catholic High and becomeinvolved in as much as possible while they are here. For the seniors, Ihope that we follow our dreams by taking what we have learned andputting it to good use.

WHAT SETS A ROMAN EDUCATION APART FROM THE REST?I think that the education in terms of what we are learning is similarto other schools, but the people make the experience different. Teachersand students, the people of the Roman Catholic community make upthe friendly and active atmosphere through their personalities, dedica-tion, and active involvement. Their enthusiasm makes students wantto learn, and want to succeed.

A member of the Roman Catholic Board of Advisors since 1992,Ed sat down with us to answer these questions for the 2008-2009Annual Report.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE/MOST INSPIRATIONALTEACHER AT ROMAN?

It is difficult to choose just one teacher from my high school daysbecause so many gave me the emotional, spiritual, and mental liftwhen I needed it the most. However, if I had to single out one teacherit would be Mr. Algeo, my English teacher for both my freshman andsenior years, because he taught us how to think critically and analyti-cally while reading early American and English literature.

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF ROMANCATHOLIC?

While there are many fond memories of my time at Roman let me giveyou my funniest. I was assigned with some classmates to stay afterschool to clean some of the blackboards. Well, we started horsingaround and one of my friends tossed an eraser at me. I ducked andwatched as this eraser sailed out the window. Naturally, I was curiousto see where it had landed, so I looked out the window to find that notonly had the eraser struck the top of Mr. Algeo's head, but it had alsoleft a chalk mark there. Mr. Algeo had this way of talking to you witha long silent stare, and that day, gesturing with just his finger and with-out moving his lips, he looked up at me and basically said, “You comedown here.” I understood perfectly what he meant.

WHAT COMPELLED YOU TO JOIN THE BOARD OFADVISORS AND GIVE SO MUCH BACK TO ROMAN?To quote an oft quoted phrase, “To whom much is given, much is expect-ed.” We are expected to do something with the resources, knowledge, and gifts God has given us and making sure that others have the oppor-tunity to benefit from those gifts. By being a member of the AdvisoryBoard it allows me to share these gifts with the students at Roman.

AS A BOARD MEMBER AND AN ALUM, WHAT IS THEDIRECTION YOU’D LIKE TO SEE ROMAN TAKE OVER THENEXT FIVE YEARS?

To continue to offer the best resources necessary to provide a quality edu-cation to students and give them the tools they need to succeed in life.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE ROMAN CATHOLIC HASREMAINED SUCCESSFUL AND PULLED THROUGH TRYING TIMES OVER THE PAST 120 YEARS?

Roman Catholic has remained successful because so many alumni andfriends of the school believe wholeheartedly in the mission and vision ofThomas E. Cahill and that is to provide a quality education to deserv-ing students that is second to none.

To Whom Much is Given, Much is Expected
