TSU W1 SKYHAWKS OPEN MUSIC CITY SWING IN SEARCH OF SECOND STRAIGHT OVC VICTORY #22 Quintin Dove Junior Forward Cleveland, Ohio Dove went off for another big scoring game last Saturday, tossing in 25 points in the OVC victory over SIUE. He sank 10 of his 16 field goal aempts and also collected a game-high eight rebounds in 28 minutes of playing time. The frontcourt star leads the Skyhawks in scoring (12.0 points per game), pacing the squad with four 20-plus point scoring performances. Dove also ranks fifth in the OVC in field goal percentage (.579) and sixth in free throw percentage (.813). Fresh off its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team looks to continue its momentum at in-state rival Tennessee State. This is the first matchup between these two squads in over 13 months, as the Skyhawks claimed a 63-60 overtime win in the Elam Center on Dec. 28, 2017. UT Martin’s Jailen Gill was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor while tallying 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Skyhawks to their fourth win in the last five matchups against the Tigers. UT Martin is coming off its first league win of the season - a convincing 85- 69 home triumph over SIUE last Saturday. In that game, the Skyhawks overcame a five-point halftime deficit by outrebounding the Cougars by a 34-27 margin and commiing only eight turnovers. Quintin Dove (25 points) and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (20 points) each produced high-scoring games for a UT Martin squad that shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) over the final 20 minutes. The Skyhawks have proven to be hard to keep off the glass, as they lead the OVC and rank 29th nationally with 12.8 offensive rebounds per game. In league play, UT Martin ranks atop the conference with a .361 offensive rebounding percentage. Tennessee State is coming off its third consecutive loss, a 100-62 road setback at OVC co-leader Murray State. Ole Miss transfer Donte Fiꜩpatrick-Dorsey led the Tigers in scoring for the eighth time this season while Stokley Chaffee, Jr. narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Kamar McKnight, who scored 11 points off the bench against the Skyhawks last season, paces Tennessee State with 12.4 points per game in OVC play. Earlier this season, he poured in a career-best 30 points at Western Kentucky. ALL-TIME VS. That is the highest total out of 351 Division I men’s basketball teams, barely leading UT Arlington (13 in 20 games). HEARTBREAKERS IN OVC PLAY Despite their 1-7 OVC record, the Skyhawks have been in position to win several league games. In its OVC opener on Jan. 3, UT Martin led by nine points with under seven minutes to play and six points with a minute left at Eastern Illinois before falling 92-87. Two days later, the Skyhawks held a 12-point lead with 5:37 to go at Southeast Missouri but wound up losing by a 74-69 margin. On Jan. 12 against previously unbeaten Austin Peay, the Skyhawks had a potential game-tyingshotattemptblockedjustbeforethefinalbuzzerina72-70setback.Tendayslater against Eastern Illinois, UT Martin led by 12 points at the halftime break but the Panthers hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds to go in a narrow 66-64 loss.

RANDALL JOINS UTM AT MID-YEAR UT Martin received a boost on Jan. 7 when mid-year transfer Craig Randall II joined the 2018-19 active roster. Randall played in 56 total games in two seasons at the University of Memphis (2015-17) before transferring to Duquesne University for the 2017-18 campaign. Randall helped lead the Tigers to back-to-back 19-win seasons and an appearance in the American Athletic Conference championship game as a freshman. Playing for 1997 NCAA champion and 14-year NBA veteran Mike Bibby, Randall was a highly-touted recruit out of Shadow Mountain High School. He was a three-star recruit who was named the No. 1 high school player in the state of Arizona by ESPN.com. He was also tabbed as the No. 26 player in the West Region and the No. 36 point guard in the country.

RAINING TREYS IN OVC OPENER Despite a setback, the Skyhawks generatedanear-historiceffortfromthree-point range in their OVC opener at Eastern Illinois. UT Martin’s 15 treys were just one shy of the school’s single-game record, set at Northwestern State (March 19, 2015), against Boyce College (Jan. 2, 2016) and against Tennessee Tech (Jan. 13, 2016).

PERFECT NONCONFERENCE HOME MARK For just the sixth time in the school’s Division I history (since 1992), the Skyhawks started off a season with fiveconsecutive home victories. To start off the season, UT Martindefeated Cumberland, Western Illinois, UNC Asheville, Brescia and Chattanoogaby an average of 16.8 points per outing. The Skyhawks also began the season 5-0 at home during the 2016-17, 2002-03, 2001-02, 2000-01 and 1995-96 campaigns.

DOVE NABS OVC HONOR AGAIN JuniorforwardQuintinDovewasnamedOhio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 3 and again on Dec. 31. Dove became only the seventh player in school history to earn the OVC Newcomer of the Week award twice in a calendar month. He joins an exclusive list that includes Twymond Howard (February 2015), Deville Smith (January 2015), Delrico Lane (December 2008), Lester Hudson (January 2008), Brian Foster (February 2001) and Michael Hart (February 1995).

PARKS 75-FOOT BUZZER BEATER Preston Parks provided one of the most memorable finishes in UT Martinbasketball history in the 75-72 home win overChattanoogaonDec.18. Immediately following a game-tying three-pointer with 1.3 seconds to go, Parks received the ensuing inbounds pass and took one dribble before flinging a 75-footbank shot for the game-winner just before thefinalbuzzer. Parks’ heroics went viral, as the play was listed on ESPN SportsCenter’s “Top 10” and was also featured on Sports Illustrated, Bleacher Report, NCAA March Madness andAssociatedPressaccountsonTwitter.

PARKS SHOWS OUT IN UTM DEBUT Literally hours after the NCAA granted him a waiver to play immediately, Preston Parks almost singlehandedly carried the Skyhawks to the 92-90 win over Western Illinois on Nov. 21. The junior southpaw tossed in 15 of his game-high21pointsinthefinal3:24ofthecontest – including 12 consecutive points for UT Martin in a 56-second stretch to help erasea12-pointsecondhalfdeficit. That came after The Citadel transfer was playinghisfirstgameinalmostacalendaryear before the NCAA cleared him only six hours before tipoff. Parks was originallyscheduled to make his Skyhawk debut on Dec. 15 against Brescia.

LEWIS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-OVC Redshirt senior forward Fatodd Lewis earned a spot on the 12-man Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference squad, as voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Lewis ranked seventh in the OVC in rebounding (7.3 per game) while averaging 12.4 points, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals over 29.2 minutes per contest in 2017-18.

UTM IN PRESEASON RANKINGS The OVC head coaches and sports information directors picked the Skyhawks tofinish11thoutof12teamsintheleague’sofficialpredictedorderoffinish. In national publications, Lindy’s tabbed UT Martin to finish fifth, Blue Ribbonpicked the Skyhawks to place sixth while AthlonselectedUTMartintofinisheighth.

FATHER/SON DUOS Skyhawk head coach Anthony Stewart and sophomore guard Parker Stewart are part of a unique UT Martin history. Although Parker has to sit out this seasonaftertransferringinfromPittsburgh, the Stewarts are the fifth known father/son duo to coach/play at UT Martin at the same time. They join coach Bubba/Lin Cates (baseball,2008-09), coach Jerry/ScottCarpenter (golf, 2002-04), coach Vernon/Mike Prather (baseball, 1983-84) and coach Vester/Larry Newcomb (football, 1978). Anthony and Parker are one of 12 active father/son duos in NCAA Division I basketball. The others are coach Avery/Avery Johnson, Jr. (Alabama), Donyell/Donyell Marshall, Jr. (Central Connecticut State), coach Rod/Bray Barnes (CSU Bakersfield), coach Mike/Antoine Davis(Detroit Mercy), coach Fran/Connor McCaffery (Iowa), coach John/BradCalipari (Kentucky), coach Wayne/Tres Tinkle (Oregon State), coach Terry/Franklin and Malcom Porter (Portland), coach Jim/Buddy Boeheim (Syracuse) and coach Johnny/Aubrey Dawkins (UCF).

NO ROOKIES ON THE ROSTER Of the 351 men’s basketball programs competing at the NCAA Division I level, the Skyhawks are one of just three teams to not have a single freshman on their roster. UT Martin joins Alcorn State and South Alabama in that category. The Skyhawks are one of seven Division I teams to not have a scholarship freshman on the 2018-19 roster, joining Alcorn State, South Alabama, Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Louisville and Tulsa.
