Message from our President…
January roared in like a lion! The weather was cold, snowy and lots of ice. But, that didn’t stop the SOBs from enjoying the dances. January 11-14th was also Mid-Winter SOS and a number of SOBS attended. The dance at the VFW on January 12th was a great success. It rained and there was fog, but the SOBS showed up to dance. DJ Claude Collins played the best music and everyone had a good time.
We held our first “Sunday Series” dance of the year at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on January 21st. A rousing group showed up to dance to the music of DJ Tim Holland and a great time was had by all. There was no need to stay home to watch football because the Steelers al-ready lost. (Editor note: Chuck’s from Pittsburg!)
On January 23rd a few of our couples including Joe & Kathy Malinowski, Roger & Sue Albizu, and Sandy and I put on a shag demonstration at the Carillon Assisted Living of Southport. We had a great time and the folks at the home had some fun.
January 26th was our annual “Re-Up/Join-Up” dance at the Moose Lodge. Our “Hall of Fame” DJ “Fessa” John Hook, always plays great music. The Southern pulled pork dinner was deli-cious and 130 shaggers either Re-Upped their membership or Joined-Up as new members of the club.
As we move into February we have three dances scheduled. First, is our Valentine’s Day dance on February 9th, then our “Sunday Series” dance on February 18th at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill with DJ Chigger Woods, and last but not least, our “Chili Cook-Off” dance at the Moose Lodge on February 23rd. Look for more information as we get closer to the dates. We are hoping for blue skies and warmer weather to return to the North Carolina coast.

After a review of the bylaws, it was determined that whoever occupies that position already has voting rights and shall exercise those rights at Board events. All agreed and the issue was closed.
NEW BUSINESS:
Chuck met with the new Moose Lodge management to establish communications. Cost per dance for the club at the Moose this year will be $125/dance.

It was decided among the attendees that future Board meetings will be held at the OKI VFW on the Wednesday prior to the first dance of the month at 5 PM.
Chuck & Sandy, Joe & Kathy Malinowski and Roger & Sue Albizu will cover the dance demo at Carillon Assisted Living on January 23rd.
Chuck has a source of red carnations and will provide one to all the ladies in attendance at the Valentine’s Day dance (also Katie’s birthday).
The Re-Up/Join Up dinner “on the club” will cost the club $9.60/pp. Chuck will discuss with Moose management to see if the price can be negotiated lower. The “Re-Up/Join-Up” will be handled by Joe Malinowski. “Re-Up” members need to only verify their membership information on a club membership listing and pay their dues. All new “Join-Up” members will need to complete a membership form.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Joe Malinowski was not available for the meeting. (Editor note: Joe thought the meeting started at 6 PM!)

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22, Washington’s actual day of birth, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Following President George Washington’s death in 1799, his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance. At the time, Washing-ton was venerated as the most important figure in American history, and events like the 1832 centennial of his birth and the start of construction of the Washington Monument in 1848 were
cause for national celebration.
President's Day, which is always celebrated on the third Monday of the month, never falls on the actual birthday of any American president. While Washington’s Birthday was an unofficial observance for most of the 1800s, it was not until the late 1870s that it be-came a federal holiday. Senator Steven Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas was the first to propose the measure, and in 1879 President Ruth-erford B. Hayes signed it into law. The holiday initially only applied to the District of Columbia, but in 1885 it was expanded to the whole country. At the time, Washington’s Birthday joined four other nationally recognized federal bank holidays—Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving—and was the first to celebrate the life of an individual American. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, signed into law in 1983, would be the second.
The shift from Washington’s Birthday to Presidents’ Day began in the late 1960s when Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Championed by Senator Robert McClory of Illinois, this law sought to shift the celebration of several federal holidays from specific dates to a series of predetermined Mondays. The proposed change was seen as a novel way to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers, and it was believed that ensuring holidays always fell on the same weekday would reduce employee absenteeism. While some argued that shifting holidays from their original dates would cheapen their meaning, the bill also had widespread support from both the private sector and labor unions and was seen as a surefire way to bolster retail sales.
The Uniform Monday Holiday Act also included a provision to combine the celebration of Washington’s Birthday with Abraham Lin-coln’s, which fell on the proximate date of February 12. Lincoln’s Birthday had long been a state holiday in places like Illinois, and many supported joining the two days as a way of giving equal recognition to two of America’s most famous statesmen. McClory was among the measure’s major proponents, and he even floated the idea of renaming the holiday “President’s Day.” This proved to be a point of contention for lawmakers from George Washington’s home state of Virginia, and the proposal was eventually dropped. Nev-ertheless, the main piece of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968 and officially took effect in 1971 following an executive order from President Richard Nixon. Washington’s Birthday was then shifted from the fixed date of February 22 to the third Monday of February. Columbus Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day were also moved from their traditionally designated dates. After wide-spread criticism, in 1980 Veterans’ Day was returned to its original November 11 date.
While Nixon’s order plainly called the newly placed holiday Washington’s Birthday, it was not long before the shift to Presidents’ Day began. The move away from February 22 led many to believe that the new date was intended to honor both Washington and Abra-ham Lincoln, as it now fell between their two birthdays. Marketers jumped at the opportunity to play up a three-day weekend with sales, and “Presidents’ Day” bargains were advertised around the country. By the mid-1980s Washington’s Birthday was known to many Americans as Presidents’ Day. This shift had solidified in the early 2000s, by which time as many as half the 50 states had changed the holiday’s name to Presidents’ Day on their calendars. Some states have even chosen to customize the holiday by adding new figures to the celebration. Arkansas, for instance, celebrates Washington as well as civil rights activist Daisy Gatson Bates. Ala-bama, meanwhile, uses Presidents’ Day to commemorate Washington and Thomas Jefferson (who was born in April).
Washington and Lincoln still remain the two most recognized leaders, but Presidents’ Day is now seen as a day to recognize the lives and achievements of all of America’s chief executives. Some lawmakers have objected to this view, arguing that grouping George Washington and Abraham Lincoln together with less successful presidents minimizes their legacies. Congressional measures to restore Washington and Lincoln’s individual birthdays were proposed during the early 2000s, but all failed to gain much attention. For its part, the federal government has held fast to the original incarnation of the holiday as a celebration of the country’s first president. The 3rd Monday in February is still listed on official calendars as Washington’s Birthday.
In its original incarnation as Washington’s Birthday, the holiday gained special meaning during the difficulties of the Great Depression, when portraits of George Washington often graced the front pages of newspapers and magazines every February 22. In 1932 the date was used to reinstate the Purple Heart, a military decoration originally created by George Washington to honor soldiers killed or wounded while serving in the armed forces. In its modern form, Presidents’ Day is used by many patriotic and historical groups as a date for staging celebrations, reenactments and other events. A number of states also require that their public schools spend the days leading up to Presidents’ Day teaching students about the accomplishments of the presidents, often with a focus on the lives of Wash-ington and Lincoln.

If you didn’t, you know who you are! OK fellow SOBS, it’s “Re-Up/Join-Up” time! If you haven’t Re-Up, your membership in the SOBS ran out on January 31st. Our next dance on February 9th at the VFW is your opportunity to “Re-Up” in the best Shag Club on the East Coast! It’s also a great opportunity to get your shagging friends to “Join-Up” with us as well. The cost is $20 per per-son for the membership year. The “Re-Up/Join-Up” fee will get you a year’s membership and admission to the dance.
NOTE: To expedite the process for our current members who are going to “Re-Up”, no membership form is required. We will have a complete current membership list containing your 2017 information. It will contain (Last/First Name, email address, mailing address, phone number and birth date-no year!). In lieu of filling out the membership form again, we ask you to verify, make any corrections and pay your dues. Of course, new members will have to initially fill out the form so we can add them to our membership list. The last page of this newsletter is a Membership Application for your friends’ conven-ience. Checks should made out to the “SOCIETY OF BRUNSWICK SHAGGERS.”
As with most non-profit social clubs, volunteering is the backbone of our organization as well as a great chance to become famil-iar with the entire Membership. We ask our Members to consider and step up for whatever small part you would like to play during the year.
HOSPITALITY – responsible for greeting Members and Guests at the door of our dances. They take money in and check off Members/Guests at the door and direct questions (Membership, SOS Cards, etc.) to a SOBS Officer. They could also check on the Guests throughout the night and answer any questions. These people are our AMBASSADORS!
COMMUNICATION – anyone is welcome to write articles or submit pictures for our Newsletter/Website. Your experiences at events (dances, SOS, etc.) would certainly be welcome. Deadline for our Newsletter is the 25th of the month.
ENTERTAINMENT – responsible for helping set up (decorate) and clean up at selected dances. These are important positions as we need to leave our venues as we found them and the Board Members do eventually tire of the tasks.
SOCIAL – volunteers to participate (dance or make costumes) in the SOS Parade in April, sell raffle tickets or procure items for auction at our Charity event, and to sell 50/50 tickets at our regular dance events.
ANYTHING NEEDED – This is the MEGA-VOLUNTEER who is available at most club functions. You can offer up your services at any event and as well as making yourselves available for last minute needs.
Did You “Re-Up/Join-Up” Yet?...

What is SOS you ask? Three times a year the parent organization of shag, Society of Stranders (SOS) holds huge dance events known as SOS. Nearly 100 clubs up and down the East Coast constitute the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) and their members take part in the festivities. All SOS events take place in the Ocean Drive/North Myrtle Beach area of SC. Yearly SOS cards may be purchased at the event for $35 or through our club for $30. The card allows you entrance without a cover charge to any of the night clubs/venues during SOS. All clubs are within walking distance of one another. More information on SOS will be provided as we get closer to the date!
The following are 2018’s events:
Spring Safari will be held April 20-29 and will feature a parade.
The SOBS will be defending 2017’s award of First Place Shag Troupe
Fall Migration will take place September 14-23
This year’s SOS April 28th parade theme is “Blast From the Past”. Here’s the plan: Our club’s parade entry will be entitled “Those were the Days”. Based on black & white TV shows of the 50’s & 60’s (Beverly Hillbillies, Bonanza, I Love Lucy, and the Twilight Zone) our “Shagging Troupe” entry will consist of SOBS doing one of the following:
Dress in black & white portraying characters of the shows
The Beverly Hillbillies will be portrayed by Sonny & Debby Gentry and Cathy & Francis Meyers
4 individuals walking/carrying cardboard TV screens with the shows’ titles
Many SOBS walking, handing out Mardi Gras beads,
8 walkers holding signs reading “Blast”, ”From”, “The”, and “Past”.
The parade route is approximately ½ mile, DJ Jim Bruno will be playing his music for us along the route. Sounds like fun, it IS and you will enjoy the legendary tailgating. Last year we had nearly 70 participants. More information will follow as we finalize our parade plans!
Please contact us to let us know that you’re interested in being part of the fun.

February DJ Information...
Fellow SOBS… The year has gotten off to a great start. What a way to start the year with DJ’s Claude Collins and “Fessa” John Hook. All had a great time at our three dances and the Bar-B-Q at Re-Up was excellent. Spinning the discs for our three, yes three, dances this month will be:
Friday, February 9th - DJ Terry McPhail @ OKI VFW Sunday, February 18th - DJ “Chigger” Woods @ The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill
Friday, February 23rd - DJ Jimmy Buffkin @ OKI Moose Lodge
DJ Terry McPhail will be playing for our Friday, February 9th, “Valentine’s Day” dance at the VFW and has been a SOBS Valentine’s dance tradition for many years. Terry has been involved as a Beach Music DJ for a number of years and has played often for our club. He is retired from a career in the US Army. Eve-ry year he has supported our Operation Uplink with a DJ Party donation. He and his wife Karen spend their time between Ocean Drive (N. Myrtle Beach) and Elizabethtown, NC. Terry is one of the DJs on the Annual Blues Cruise and is always at the OD Arcade playing the best songs during SOS.
The club will host a “Sunday Series” afternoon dance party at the oceanfront Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on February 18th with DJ “Chigger” Woods from 1-5 PM. “Chigger” was born and raised in Durham, NC. He is a member of a Beach Music group “The Fabulous Jellirolls”. “Chigger” is one of the founding members of the Eno Beach Shag Club in Durham, NC. He has been a DJ for 10+ years and plays for many Shag clubs and night clubs in both North and South Carolina. He plays at the OD Beach Club in the Spanish Galleon complex during the 3 SOS events. He and his wife Cookie been married for over 45+years and have a daughter. We will all enjoy our afternoon with “Chigger”.
This year continues our revival of an old club tradition - Winter Time “Chili Cook Off”. Last year for the “Chili Cook-Off” contest we had many entries. Look for info and get out your chili pots. Our 3rd Annual Chili “Cook-Off” will be Friday, February 23rd with DJ Jimmy Buffkin. Jimmy was born and raised in the Caroli-nas. He now lives in North Myrtle Beach, SC and is a staff DJ at Fat Harold’s Beach Club on Ocean Drive, North Myrtle Beach. His career spans the last 15+ years and he has been a member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ’s for the past 10 years. He loves to take requests and says if he has it, he will
play it. Jimmy is on Beach Music radio station 94.9 at 5 PM on Tuesday and Friday. Let’s all look forward to another great opportunity to dance, Friday, February 23rd at the Moose. Wow, what a month of dancing we have ahead. We hope to see you all on a dance floor soon.
