Executive Committee Meeting Minutes, August 8, 2018...

PRESENT: Chuck Boney, President; John Hutton, Vice President; Dennis Faver, Treasurer; Joe Malinowski, Membership/Newsletter, Cathy Myers, Secretary The meeting was called to order at 4:30 PM by President, Chuck Boney. SECRETARY’S REPORT: The minutes were approved as published. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Dennis Faver reported that July was a positive cash flow month and after the dispersal of funds as well as DJ checks, the current balance is $4,408.18. This includes money which will be forwarded for SOS Cards and Fun Monday tickets. Chuck Boney moved that the report be approved. Cathy Myers seconded. Unanimously approved. OLD BUSINESS: • The July dances were successful with 73 members plus guests in attendance at the dance on the 27th. • Chuck attended the ACSC Summer Workshop and learned that member clubs are not to donate to any organization unless

they hold a 501(c)(3) designation. • SOS cards and Fun Monday tickets will be available for purchase at the next two meetings. • SOS “Fall Migration” Free Pour will be held on September 22nd from 1 PM until 4 PM or until the money runs out. • Katy O’Neill gave an update on Operation Uplink. Flyers will be passed out at the OD Shag Club, Coastal Shag Club and Leland

Shag Clubs. She is accepting donations and is up to date on receipts. Katy prepared an article recapping past Uplink history which will go in the newsletter. Also she has found pictures and memorabilia which will be displayed at the next meeting. We just need to start getting donations from the community.

• John Hutton reported that Uplink tickets have been passed out to all members who attended the last two dances. He will pass them out for the next two dances and then mail the remaining tickets after our dance at the OKI Moose Lodge later this month.

• Chuck confirmed with the Moose Lodge management that we can bring food for the Thanksgiving dinner at the November 9th dance.

NEW BUSINESS: • August 10th dance theme is “Some Like it Hot!”. The September 7th dance will be the annual hot dogs and hamburgers “on the

club.” • Chuck Boney moved that the club purchase five Fun Monday tickets to be used with the 50/50 at next two dances. Dennis

Faver seconded. Unanimously approved. • Chuck will discuss possible menus with the Moose Lodge for the dinner at the Christmas Dance on December 8. • Dennis Faver brought up the dance decoration situation, suggesting that a chairman or committee might be helpful. Discus-

sion ensued. At the next meeting, Chuck will ask for volunteers to decorate for the August 24th dance. It was suggested that before the end of 2018, the Board decide on the theme for each dance in 2019. Then starting in 2019, the volunteer sign-up board will have a column for “Decorations” in addition to “Door” and “50-50” for each dance. This will help spread the re-sponsibility.

COMMUNICATION & MEMBERSHIP: • The Website is updated and current. • Currently there are 228 members, 177 re-ups and 50 new members. With no other business, Chuck Boney adjoined the meeting at 5:17 PM. Next Meeting: September 5th, 4:30PM @ OKI VFW

Society Of Stranders (SOS) “Fall Migration”...

Hey SOBS! You can now show your club colors & loyalty by having a personal item embroi-

dered by fellow SOBS member, Beth Uhl. The logo is depicted here on the right and can be

embroidered on polo shirts, button-up shirts, towels (like we don’t sweat much during the

Summer months!) and tote bags.

The cost is only $15 and will be completed within 10 days to 2 weeks. Other sizes of the

logo are also available at an additional charge. Proudly wear our logo gear at SOS and other

shag events! See Beth at one of our dances or contact her at (910) 880-0104 for pick-up

and delivery options.

SOBS Embroidered Logo...

For those new SOBS who joined us this year, you may or may not know what SOS is all about. It’s actually a 10 day gathering of a few thousand of your closest shagging friends along the East coast. For 10 days in April (SOS Spring Safari) and then in September (SOS Fall Migration), you will have the time of your life shagging “where it all began!” in North Myrtle Beach, SC. For now we’ll focus on Fall Migration that is being held on Sep-tember 14 thru 23, 2018.

The home page of the SOS website (http://www.shagdance.com/migration.htm) states…

“Welcome to the Official website of the Society of Stranders (SOS)! Let this site be your guide and highway of infor-mation for the Dance, Lifestyle and the Music of Shag. If you step into the nearest SOS beach club you will be greet-ed by the smiling faces of friends you've met and yet to meet. Everywhere couples are sliding gracefully across the dance floor as their loafers hiss on the hardwood. Welcome to a dance and a way of life that thousands enjoy. Wel-come to the world of shag!”

Their purpose states…

“There are a number of elements that together relate the purpose of SOS. First, SOS provides a means to guide shag dancing & the lifestyle that surrounds it into the future while keeping in touch with the past that gave birth to this phenomenon. Second, we always strive to perpetuate the dance, music, and culture that make up the shag. Third, we provide a framework for discussing, planning, & implementing activities at the beach for all stranders to enjoy. This includes providing information to & communication between shaggers, lounges, dance clubs, & associated or-ganizations for the purpose of enhancing the shag experience.”

In addition to all the opportunities to dance, we will also have our SOBS “Free Pour” at the OD Pavilion on Septem-ber 22nd. More info will be emailed to you when we get closer to the date. “Free Pour” means the water, soda, beer, wine, & mixed drinks are on us! The “Free Pour” ends when the club allotted money runs out, but the fun can still continue with great dancing in the classic OD Pavilion.

So, please read pages 5-7 of this newsletter to get a feeling of what it’s all about… dancing, fellowship, friendship, fun, and did I mention dancing?

SOS “Fall Migration”…

From (Official Website of SOS) http://www.shagdance.com/migration.htm

The end of summer is marked by the days getting shorter & the nights growing longer, a little chill in the night air, & flocks of birds winging their way south for the winter. This all means one thing to shaggers. The Fall Migration is finally here! Buried deep in the instincts of every shagger is the preferred migration destination of soulful dancers with sand in their shoes & rhythm in their hearts, that is Ocean Drive. Every strander feels the need to get to the beach to catch the last golden rays of the summer sun & feel the warmth in the breath of the final summer breeze. They all meet for the last blast of the season at the SOS Fall Migration. This year’s dates are September 14 thru 23, 2018.

The center of attention for the 10 days of the biggest adult party on the East Coast is the famous SOS lounges. The SOS lounges are Fat Harold's, Ducks, Duck's II, the OD Arcade, the Pirate's Cove & the clubs at the OD Beach & Golf Resort. Each lounge has its own special quality, so you really need to make the rounds through each lounge during your Fall Migration outings. Many member clubs of the ACSC will schedule "tea parties" in the local lounges. The lounges themselves schedule special parties during the migration. Popular bands show up along Main Street playing crowd favorites. Shag dance instructors will offer clas-ses to the masses who are seeking to improve their skill or increase their repertoire of moves. All though the heart of any SOS event is the nightlife in the lounges at the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Drive, you can't afford to miss the two mon-ster events held right out in the sparkling sun of the crystal coast. You need to mark your calendar & plan to be on hand for both SOS Fun Sunday & Fun Monday!

On the first Sunday & only Monday of the Fall Migration everyone meets in the street for two of the biggest block parties you have ever seen, Fun Sunday & Fun Monday. On Fun Sunday the party is in the street beside the OD Arcade. Some of the best names in beach & shag music will help you rock the day away with a few thousand of your closest friends. Don't worry if you can't get enough fun in one day, because on Monday we are gonna' do it all again. For Fun Monday we will pack Main Street from OD to Hillside with every smooth dancing fun lovin' friend that we can find. There will be great music, dancing in the street, & fun to be had by all. We will also have merchandise vendors, food and drink vendors, & displays set up by the SOS sponsors.

**Remember that we are guests on the streets of North Myrtle Beach. We need to make sure that we do our best to pick up our belongings and trash when we get ready to leave. As in the past, there will be no coolers or containers permitted on the street or in public areas during Fun Monday. We want everyone to have fun, but please remember that adult beverages may be obtained from local merchants & consumed on their premises only.

Both Fun Sunday & Fun Monday offer you the chance to have a great time during your stay at North Myrtle Beach. But one of the greatest things about these events is known to very few people. They are both funded solely by sales of Fun Monday raffle tickets. That's right. There is no admission charge! How great is that? Two fun filled days. Dozens of great musicians. Thou-sands of people & more excitement than you can imagine.

To make the most of your Fun Sunday & Fun Monday experience come prepared. Make sure you have a chair, a hat, and clothes appropriate for the weather. We'll be outside all day, so don't forget your sunblock. Please do not bring umbrellas as they present a danger to others in a big crowd & block the view of other guests. Please keep one thing in mind though. We need your help. We can't pay for the party without your help. You can pitch in by either buying or selling Fun Monday raffle tickets. If you will help us with this, you get more than just the satisfaction of making a great party possible. You get the chance to cash in big! That's right. If you are the lucky holder of the winning ticket in the raffle you could go home with $7,500! You also get the joy of helping people in need. Any proceeds that remain after the event expenses are paid are donated to charity. Both the SOS charitable fund & Caring for Kids of Horry County have benefited from the Fun Monday Raffle. So, help us, help yourself, & help the needy. Join in the excitement of the Fun Monday Raffle!

If you are ready for a little adventure, maybe it is time for you to schedule a trip to the wilds of North Myrtle Beach. Maybe it is time for you to join the party at the SOS Fall Migration.

September DJ Information...

Summer is flying by and has given us many great opportunities to dance. DJs Mike Hudson and Terry McPhail both did a great job for the club in August. Spinning the discs for our September dances are:

Friday, September 7th - DJ Gene Sistare @ OKI VFW

Friday, September 21st DJ Jimmy Bruno @ OKI Moose Lodge

DJ Gene Sistare will be playing our September 7th “Dog Days of Summer!” dance at the VFW. The Hot Dogs and Hamburger cookout always brings a good turnout. Gene has played for us many times and keeps the dance floor full. He is from Lancaster, South Caroli-na. Gene has been involved with the Lancaster Shag Club since 1993 and began doing DJ work in 1997. Since 2000 he has been a staff DJ at the Beach Music Cafe and the Spanish Galleon Nightclub both in the Ocean Drive Beach and Golf Resort. In addition he is a staff DJ at Fat Harold’s Beach club where he plays each month and during SOS events. Gene is a lifetime member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ’s and is also a member of the National Association of Rhythm and Blues DJ’s, he has played for over 50 different Shag clubs over the years. Gene is one of the DJ’s on the Embers Band “Making Waves” cruise

and was recently inducted into the DJ Hall of Fame. Gene is also one of the DJ’s that donates to our Operation Up-link event. Put this on your calendar and get out your dancing shoes. DJ Jim “Two Wraps” Bruno is playing again for us SOBS. His wife Pam is the current Presi-dent of the Coastal Shag Club in Shallotte. Jim plays for the Coastal club as well as other ven-ues in the area and is a member of the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ’s. Jim began his DJ career in Virginia in the late 1980’s. He is also the current assistant Fire Chief of Cala-bash and his nickname of Jimmy “Two Wraps” has to do with the way he wore his belt as a fireman. Put September 21st on your calendar and wear your dancing shoes. SOS will be here this month with Fun Sunday and Fun Monday. Our club traditional SOS Fall Migration “Free Pour” will be at the O.D. Pavilion at 1 PM or so, Saturday, September 22nd. We will look forward to seeing you all there. It is always a great time of dancing and camaraderie. We continue to enjoy the Shag lifestyle as much as is possible and are looking forward to seeing all you SOBS at our upcoming dances. The ocean and beach continue to offer us so much enjoyment. I am pushing 70 miles of ocean swimming headed toward my goal of 100 miles. On another note, due to our travel plans for 2019, I will not be running for any club office. Since starting the club in 2001 I have been a club officer for 7 of those years. I have enjoyed each and every one, but realize it is time for me to step aside so that others may step up. I will con-tinue to book the DJs as I have done for many years. Thanks to all of you who have supported me and my vision of our club. I hope to see you all on the dance floor. Have a great summer!

Operation Uplink is only 40 days away! “Thank you” to everyone listed on the table showing our item count as of today. 2017’s Operation Uplink offered over 70 items in the Silent Auction alone. Our current count could surpass that number of offerings with YOUR help. As you will see from the table, we have a wide selection of goodies for your bidding and raffle chances. We look forward to the additional items which will join this count.

How to donate? Using the community solicitation letter offered in the last newsletter solicit items from your favorite restau-rants, service providers and friends. The top of the letter acts as their receipt, and the bottom portion acts as ours. Turn in the bottom portion with the donated item. Print out as many as you like!! Perhaps you, like so many of our members, are an arti-san and would like to donate your handiwork to this worthwhile event.

Bring any donations to a September SOBS dance, or call me, Katy O’Neill at (910) 201-9993 OR (910) 619-8265 and we will arrange to pick up your donations. OR, you can drop items at our home on Oak Island. You can also arrange with Chuck & Sandy Boney by calling at (910) 523-3987. Please let me know if you have items which you intend to bring directly to the event on October 12th.

I have arranged for an hour-long work session at the VFW for Tuesday, October 9 from 3-4 PM to arrange baskets, type up inventories, make the raffle ticket table and create the Silent Auction bid sheets. Simply show up if you are interested in as-sisting. We still need some members to assist during the Operation Uplink event on October 12th. Please call me if you are interested in assisting. Please don’t hesitate to call me! Thanks for your support of this great event!

Dear Community Member,

On October 12, 2018, the Society of Brunswick Shaggers (SOBS) dance club will hold their 15th annual Beach Music Shag Dance & Fundraiser at the Moose Lodge on Long Beach Rd, Oak Island. All profits from this event will be do-nated to the VFW’s Operation Uplink and Brunswick County’s New Hope Clinic. Our organization has donated over $40,000 through the local VFW to provide US Service men and women with free call days and Internet con-nections. Our event will include a dance with DJ John “Fessa” Hook, a Silent Auction, raffles, a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.

Would your organization or business be willing to support our event through the donation of items suitable for any of these categories? Examples of items donated in years past include DJ services, gift cards, golf and hotel packag-es, airplane rides, boat rides, ceramics, works from local artists, a grill, jewelry, tote bags, and services from local area restaurants. If you prefer, we can accept monetary donations from your business. Your name will be en-tered into the door prize drawing and your company’s name/Business cards will be prominently featured on our Wall of Fame at the event.

The lower portion of this letter will serve as your receipt for your donation. If you need additional information about your donation please contact our Auction Chairperson at the number listed below.

Thank you,

Chuck Boney

Our August 10th “Some Like it HOT!” dance at the OKI VFW had a group of 45 SOBS, 8 new members and 1 guest (Maureen Getheofer)! DJ Mike Hudson did an outstanding job playing all of our favorites and re-quests. A big thanks to Sandy Boney & Elaine Faver who turned the “Heat On!” for our dance party. And, another big THANK YOU to all who brought those delicious snacks & desserts to share!
