As the 2016-17 school year comes to a close, we
celebrate another senior class reaching the milestone of their educational career thus far,
graduation. On Saturday, May 27, 2017, one hundred forty students will graduate from Port Clinton High School and embark on the next
chapter of their lives. One of the highlights of the end of year award ceremonies is 71st annual Port
Clinton Rotary Club PCHS Honors Banquet. Through the generosity of several community groups and established individual scholarships, the
community presents PCHS students with numerous
scholarships to continue their education.
Another community partnership is PCHS Government Day. Mr. Greg Scalf’s Government Classes students had the opportunity to learn first
hand what life is really like as a public official. On May 9, 2017, students spent the day with City
Officials and learned about the requirements and responsibilities of their positions. They even
participated in a mock trial with the prosecution and defense preparing in the morning for the afternoon trial. Safety Service Director, Mr. Trevor
Johnson, welcomed students and gave special mention to Mr. Scalf on his final Government Day
as he will retire at the end of the school year. The day concluded with an evening city council
meeting.
The last day for students is Thursday, May 25, 2017 and the first day for the next school year will
be Monday, August 28, 2017. Families with school age children that currently live outside the Port Clinton City School District limits can open
enroll to the school district. Applications are now being accepted until May 25, 2017. The school
district provides an environment that is large enough to challenge, small enough to care. For more information about Open Enrollment or to
schedule a tour call the Board of Education at 419-732-2102, ext. 8 or apply online at www.pccsd.net
under the “Open Enrollment” tab.
At this year’s Scholarship Banquet celebrated on
May 3rd at Port Clinton High School, senior Kylie Hurst was selected to receive a $500 scholarship
from the Port Clinton Chamber of Chamber of Commerce and Bryce Jackson received a $500 scholarship from the Port Clinton Chamber of
Commerce Foundation. Congratulations!
Our annual scholarships are made possible through the generous support of the players and
sponsors at our Annual Golf Outing.

Lake Erie Shores & Islands
Lake Erie Shores & Islands is for the
Birds!
The Lake Erie Shores & Islands region is fortunate to have just finished the biggest
birding festival in the U.S. or possibly even the world. The annual Biggest Week in
American Birding, a ten-day bird watching extravaganza with special events throughout Erie, Ottawa, and Lucas counties, took place
in early May.
According to Black Swamp Bird Observatory,
the Oak Harbor-based non-profit organization that started the Biggest Week event eight
years ago, more than 77,000 birders visit the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region between mid-April and late-May. The economic impact
of those visitors during that time is in excess of $37 million. The increasing popularity of
bird watching is an activity that contributes significantly to our local economy, as these visitors use area lodging, eat in local
restaurants, and shop in neighborhood
stores.
During last year’s festival, birders spotted 236 different species of birds including 36 different species of warblers. It’s no wonder
the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region is
known as the “Warbler Capital of the World!”
In addition to Biggest Week’s festivities, birders continue to flock to the Shores & Islands throughout the spring. Of course,
excellent bird watching opportunities are available in your own back yard! Check out
these popular local birding areas:
East Harbor State Park, Marblehead
Great Egret Marsh Preserve, Marblehead
Jane Coates Wildflower Trail, Put-in-Bay
Kuehnle Wildlife Area, Middle Bass Island
Magee Marsh, Oak Harbor

SOCA Benefit Plan for Chamber Members (MEWA) NOACC Announces New Medical Benefit Plan, Collaborative
Effort Among Chambers of Commerce as of May 2016 Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce (NOACC) has joined forces with
the Southern Ohio Chamber Alliance (SOCA) in a collaborative effort with
the Central Ohio Chambers of Commerce, the Dayton Area Chamber of
Commerce, and the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber to form a self-funded medical benefit plan aimed
at small employers with 2 to 50 employees.
SOCA recently received authorization from the Ohio Department of Insurance to form the Southern Ohio
Chamber Alliance Benefit Plan. This Plan will be available to businesses through their membership in the
chamber associations and chambers mentioned above.
The SOCA Benefit Plan (hereafter, the Plan) is a multiple employer welfare arrangement. Anthem Blue Cross
Blue Shield provides claims administration and stop loss protection. Participating employers are required to
maintain membership with a Chamber of Commerce that is authorized to offer the Plan. Initially, distribution of
the Plan is limited to Anthem Champion and Elite brokers who have completed specified training. The Plan is
governed by a Board of Trustees elected by participating employers.
State law requires the Plan to have a minimum of 300 enrolled employees. Efforts are under way to begin
operations on May 1, 2016 if the minimum enrollment is met. The authorization from the ODI comes after
nearly three years of vetting the idea and planning among various partners, according to Matt Appenzeller,
Executive Director for SOCA. “This is a great example of Chambers of Commerce and our partners throughout
Ohio coming together for a common goal of providing value to the business community,” he said. “We have
great partners. I think we’re all pretty excited to get started.” The SOCA Benefit Plan will be offered through
approximately 250 Chambers of Commerce initially.
“NOACC is very pleased to be able to offer a new opportunity to our members that ultimately increases the
value of their chamber membership while providing savings on the health insurance that is important in keeping
our businesses competitive. We are looking forward to working with SOCA and the other chambers in Ohio to
make this viable for everyone” said Vicky Hawke, Executive Director of NOACC. Additional details regarding the
Plan will be disseminated in the coming months through qualified Chambers of Commerce and brokers certified
to sell the Plan.

payroll you reported for the 7/1/2015 – 6/30/2016 policy year,
unless you were audited. How does this compare to what you
anticipate in payroll from 7/1/2017 – 6/30/2018? If the amount is significantly different you are
encouraged to contact BWC at 1-800- 644-6292 or your local BWC office and have them adjust the
estimated payroll. Failure to update your payroll will not result in any penalties; however, you may
have a hefty amount to pay by 8/15/2018 (or credit) when you “true up” your bill. The second thing I
recommend you do with this information is to note how many installments (1, 2, 4, 6, or 12) BWC is
set to bill you and the due dates for those installments. You can alter the frequency of the
installments you will be billed by contacting the BWC as mentioned above. If you choose the annual
installment option BWC will be giving a 2% discount to you. Keep in mind that the first installment will
be due 6/30/17 no matter how many installments you choose. Finally, be sure to post your certificate.
Note that it states that coverage is dependent upon timely payment by the employer to maintain
active status throughout the certificate period. You can click here to visit the BWC Prospective Billing
section on their website to find articles, videos, etc. about prospective billing. As always V&A Risk

This year’s fishing forecast in Lake Erie is set to be “fin-tastic,”
according to officials from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources who were
excited to deliver the good news at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park on Monday.
Rich Carter, executive administrator of fish management and research for ODNR's
Division of Wildlife, said fish populations tend to be cyclical and most of the
fisheries across Lake Erie and Ohio are on the upside. “It’s going to be fantastic,” Carter said.
“Good times are ahead.”While many people think of just the “big two” sport fish in Lake Erie
of walleye and yellow perch, Carter likes to think of the whole “trifecta,” adding in bass as
well — both largemouth and smallmouth. Even during the winter, which did not see low
enough temperatures for consistent ice fishing, there was plenty of big fish to be caught,
Carter said. In fact, just last weekend a 15.8-pound walleye — a hair off the state record
weight — was caught in Lake Erie. Carter expects that walleye record, 16.19 pounds, which
has stood since 1999, to be broken this year. “This is the year to catch the walleye of a
lifetime,” he said. ODNR had a successful hatching in 2014, with walleye now about 16-19
inches, well above the 15-inch minimum to keep per Ohio law.

Here are 5 tips on improving your customer service:
What makes a good customer service experience?
Customers want to get their problems resolved easily
and to deal with customer service agents who know
what they’re doing. Specifically, when asked what is
the most important element of a satisfying customer
service experience, they say:
Not having to repeat myself/not being passed to
another agent - 32 percent. Friendly, knowledgeable
customer service agent - 28 percent
Resolving a problem on the first contact - 24
percent
What makes customers unhappy with a customer
service experience?
When asked what is the most frustrating aspect of
a poor customer service experience, respondents
say: Not being able to reach a live person for
support - 36 percent, A customer service agent
not having the knowledge or ability to resolve my
issue - 25 percent, Not being able to resolve my
issue or find information I need online - 20
percent, Having to repeat or provide my
information to the agent(s) - 18 percent.
The older consumers are, the more frustrated they
find it when they can’t reach a live person to help
with customer service—38 percent of those over age
55 say this is frustrating, compared to just 23
percent of those aged 18-34. Younger consumers, in
contrast, are more interested in finding information
and answers online; 35 percent say the most
frustrating aspect of a poor customer service
experience is not being able to resolve the issue or
find info they need online.
What customer service channels do people prefer to
use to get help?
Most people use a variety of channels depending on
their needs. In general, the phone is the preferred
way to get help, followed by email and then live chat.
However, there are some important age differences.
For example, email is the most popular way to get
customer service assistance for those aged 18 to 34,
while phone is the second most popular channel. For
those aged 35 to 55, it’s reversed: They use the
phone most often, and email is the second most
popular channel. However, don’t assume that older
consumers don’t use digital channels to see customer
service. Even among those aged 55 and up, almost
half (46 percent) go online for customer service.
What are the takeaways?
1. Provide a variety of options for customer
service assistance. Customers want to “have it
their way,” whether that means calling you,
emailing you or using live chat. The more
alternatives you provide, the more people you’re
going to satisfy.
2. Give customers the option to help them-
selves. Many people like to go online, either on
the company’s website or on a general internet
search, to get answers to their questions. Enable
this self-service approach by maintaining answers
to frequently asked questions (FAQs) on your site.
Keep them updated and current. If your product
or service is complex, consider adding how-to
videos or online tutorials to help customers learn
to use it.
3. Implement live online chat. Lots of people
would prefer to interact with a customer service
agent quickly via chat instead of waiting on hold.
Investigate chat widgets that you can add to your
site, or see if your existing customer service
solution offers this option.
4. Don’t make customers wait. Speaking of
waiting on hold, the Microsoft survey reports the
majority of customers in all age groups are not
willing to wait more than 5 minutes on hold.
Choose a customer service and communications
system that enables you to queue callers based
on their issues and quickly get them to an
available customer service rep.
Listen when customers tell you how they feel.
Plenty of customer service issues could be avoided if
business owners paid more attention to customer
opinions in the first place. Nearly half of survey
respondents aged 18-54 and more than half of those
aged 55+ don’t believe brands act on customer
feedback. If you don’t listen to what customers say
with their mouths, they'll start speaking with their
wallets as they head over to your competitors.
