lunch, it was discovered that theywere closed due to high water.Kudos to the social committee forcoming up with an alternativelocation while traveling. Theevent turned out to be a successbecause of their great work.

The region was hosted by JeffSnook at his Snook’s Dream CarMuseum at the end of the month. Many of the members turned outto view his collection of cars andmemorabilia.

The next event will be theplanning meeting and color tourhosted by Ruth Gulliford and Jeffand Stacey Fort. In November wewill have two events with thetour of the Ford Rouge plant onthe 10th and our annual holidayparty on the 30th.

One final note is a reminder thatthe club is “fueled byvolunteers.” We are alwayslooking for help in planning orstaging our events, orrunning the region. Ifyou can support inany way, let Barneyor one of the otherofficers know. Yourhelp will be greatlyappreciated.

Barney, Kim, Lori, and I met withMike Deetsch at the ToledoMuseum of Art to discuss thePorsche car show to be held inconjunction with the Life is aHighway: Car Culture in Americaexhibition. The date chosen forthe show is June 15, 2019. Wediscussed that this will be a multievent weekend and will includemore than the car show. Lori isdesignating our event as a Zone 4weekend for 2019. The museumis very supportive of our needsand wants this to be a success. Many great ideas were discussedand we will be having adiscussion about the events forthat weekend at the planningmeeting. If you are interested inhelping in any way, please let meknow.

Hello MVR;

The PCA National guidelines call foreach region to hold quarterlybusiness meetings. We have a fifthmeeting scheduled for October 15thdue to a few late 2018 unsettledissues. The most urgent might justbe filling the positions that willbecome vacant this coming January1st. We have an awesome car clubthat I believe is unparalleled. Theevents our social committee plansand executes are popular, diverse, and just plain fun. MVR’s memberparticipation numbers are high andwould compare favorably, percentage wise, vs any otherregion. How does all this happen, well its members just like you thathave volunteered their time andenergy, in accepting positions forterms as short as 2 years. I have nodoubt that every MVR member, hassomething to bring to the table. Weare presently in need of a President,Vice President, Membership Chair, and Board members. We all benefitfrom our club, please considervolunteering for one of thepositions that will be opening up.No special qualifications arerequired, just be a member in goodstanding. Call or send me a note, ifyou would like to discuss theavailable opportunities.

A few years ago Beth and I decidedto take a vacation with the objectiveof visiting several of our NationalParks. We started a list that

From The Left LaneBy Barney Stewart

included the Grand Canyon,

Yellowstone, and Yosemite, all verywell known National Parks. Wewanted to see what other parks wemight add to our list, so we did asearch and found the United Stateshas 60 protected areas known asNational Parks. The vast majority ofour National Parks are found westof the Mississippi. But the mostsurprising thing we found (to us)was that Ohio indeed has a NationalPark: “Cuyahoga Valley”. Locatedbetween Cleveland and Akron it’seasily accessed off the I-80 turnpikeexit 173, Interstates I-77 exits 145& 149, or I-271 exit 12. On a recentsunny autumn day, Beth and I spenta get acquainted day at the Park.Once in the park you have access to125 miles of trails ranging from 0.25to 19.5 miles. Brandywine Falls is amust see along with the 1.4 mile,Gorge loop trail. The CuyahogaValley Scenic railroad runs throughthe Park and offers seasonal rides. The Historic Ohio & Erie Canal thatlinked Lake Erie with The OhioRiver, also runs through the park. The old canal towpath is availableas a bike trail. Bird watching, yoga, guided hikes, concerts and muchmore await Park visitors. You mightwant to add a visit to Ohio’sNational Park, to your must see list.

Take care,

Barney.

Greg Herr Storyby Mark Schoenlein

I wanted to recognize a fellow PCAmember for his assistance with anew applied technology hands onactivity at Penta Career Center(Vocational HS). I had met GregHerr via a mutual work friend whohad also been a PCA member. I wasable to get to know Greg at the PCAdriving event over at the Owens CCcrash pad a couple of years agoand later hung out with him whenhe raced at the MidOhio Vintage fora couple of years. So it made senseto ask Greg to join our advisorycommittee when starting theFormula Student race car programabout 18 months ago.Approximately 70 Junior and Seniorstudents from the Auto Tech,Collison Repair, Powersports,Welding, CAD, and AdvancedManufacturing programs worked tobuild 2 open wheel FS race carspowered by Honda 18 HP motorsfrom scratch during the 2017-18school year. The premise of theprogram is if they work on the carsthey get to drive the cars whenfinished. Some students had neverdriven so much as a lawn mower.

Greg is an engineer who relates wellwith the students and the schoolstaff. On occasion we would leavework and go visit the studentsduring build time to check onprogress. As I mentioned somestudents had little to no drivingexperience so Greg assembled apresentation on the basics ofdriving a race car and we did 2training classes before and after

their lunch time during a schoolday. Greg had his steering wheeland toy Porsche props to helpillustrate technique. Later when itbecame apparent that the carswould not be ready for practicedriving Greg and another coworkertook the students individually on acone course set up in the schoolparking lot using the schoolmaintenance Kabota utilityvehicles.

Greg was not able to attend ourcompetition outing in New Castle,IN in May because he was racing onthat weekend. The 19 students thatwent did surprisingly well and it wasapparent that they had heard andput into practice the guidance thatGreg had provided. One of newbiedrivers set the fastest lap of all ofthe sessions and many of thestudents worked throughout the 2days on improving theirdriving technique. Unfortunatelyone of the students who worked onthe cars is wheelchair bound andthe hand control concept that wasdeveloped by the students did notwork well enough to allow him tobrake safely. After our return Gregproposed a hand brake/acceleratorlever concept which the instructorswere able to fabricate and install. The cars were taken to the karttrack in Fremont in June where theJunior student was able to gethimself into the car in the presenceof his father drive a couple sessionson track. It was a really greatmoment.

Ron and Sharon Gargasz are long-timeMVR PCAmembers and equallylong-time world travelers. This year, they took a bucket list trip to Ger-many – attending the PCA Fall Tref-fen tour. Highlights of this event in-cluded exclusive tours of the PorscheMuseum, Porsche Factory, and Zen-trum dealership in Zuffenhausen; a7-day Porsche rental, “hot laps” onthe Weissach Test Track, driving onthe no-speed-limit Autobahn, andaccommodations in 5-star hotelsserving the finest meals, wine, andchampagne.RonandSharonarebothgreat competitive drivers, enjoyingthe Weissach hot laps and Autobahnexcursion immensely; and the

Porsche Panamera GTS rental carperformed flawlessly!Beingverypar-ticular about the beautiful vehiclethey rented for the trip - after eachevent Ron made sure to have the carexterior cleaned and prepped for thenext day.

At the endof theweek, on thedrive toreturn the car to the dealership, Ronnoticed therewaspulsing inhis brakepedal. Hementioned this to the deal-ershipmechanic,whofoundthe frontdiscbrake rotorswere indeedwarped.Knowing the Panamera brakes wereperfectwhenRon first rented the car, what happened in one week to causethe rotors to warp?

Answer for last months challenge: This is a pretty easy one… assuming twothings: Barney and Mike’s skill are identical, and Barney turns off the airconditioning; because Barney has the convertible top and windows up, thebetter aerodynamics generated, due of a lower drag coefficient, will ensureBarney and Beth win!

What a wonderful, elegant evening – thanks mostly toPatti Door and her team. There wasa wonderful display of severalPorsches out front, let alone theparking lot full of nearly everyPorsche on the road. ClutchHow to Diagnose Battery or Charging System – 2002 911Carrera 4S

Question: A couple of times recently the car has been a little hard to start.Yesterday, parked after a 20min highway drive. Started 45 min later noproblem. Drove to the store 10 min away. Couldn't start it again. Click deadbattery. Jumpstarted it with another car and it started no problem.I expected voltmeter to show ~14V but it was a little above 13.To make a long story short, how can I make sure the charging system isworking properly? What are normal values at idle? Higher RPM? With orwithout accessories on? Etc...Thanks in advance!

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris.

Your experience with occasional hard starting and the easy-to-startcondition using a jumper battery is a clear indicator that you your currentbattery is ready for replacement. Occasionally we see problems with theelectrical portion of the ignition switch, but your case doesn’t point to thatas the issue. With your voltmeter needle at 13+ volts, the charging system is probablyjust fine. It’s not uncommon for older batteries to resist taking a charge, sowith a new unit in the battery compartment you may see that number creepup a bit. There are easy tests for battery condition beginning with a static load testthat can be performed at just about any place that sells batteries. Chargingsystem tests are equally easy but you may find that a fresh battery is justwhat the doctor ordered – no need for additional diagnostics.

Question: Hello,

I am looking for LED or bi-xenon headlight technology to improve the verypoor lighting of the halogen 993 headlightsIs there anything other than the very pricey and older technology PorscheHID retrofit?

Oil Leak – 1983 944

Question: My 944 is leaking a good amount of oil from a bolt located on thelower passenger side of the engine (pictures below). You can see it fromunder the car and it only leaks when under power. There is a washer behindthe bolt. Not sure if there is a gasket or if there's supposed to be. Wonderingif anyone knows the purpose of this bolt and/or the best way to go aboutfixing it.

Answer: Submitted by James Funk.

Your 83 944 was delivered from the factory with a 3-piece Oil PressureRelief Valve (OPRV). The three parts are a plunger, a spring, and a cap nut.The cap nut also had an aluminum washer, (N 043 815 3, sealing ring 20 X24). That washer is leaking or is missing. To fix, remove the cap nut, replace the washer, and replace the cap nut. Ifyou do not remove or disturb the housing that mounts the oil filter, youshould be OK.

Question: Yesterday I was out for a Sunday drive in the Boxster, top downcrusin with my wife. All is well. after about 100 miles driven and afterstopping about 50 miles from home we got in the car to return home. Thenit happened. I drove about 1/2 mile and this ungodly screeching was comingfrom the right front of the car. Never had this before. Pulled over got outand inspected the wheel, brake caliper and under the car and all lookednormal. Got back in and drove off and the sound didn't return. Drove homecarefully without incident and will be taking it in to my Indie to be lookedat. My question here is could this be something with the breaks orsomething with the radiator fan on that side?

Answer: Submitted by Pedro Bonilla.

The radiator fans are made of plastic and if they make any sound at all it'snot what you describe. Most likely you had a small pebble caught between the front brake rotor andthe dust shield. It makes the same sound you describe.Once you stopped, the pebble got dislodged and you never heard it again. You probably don't even need to get it looked at if the sound is gone.

Happy Porsche'ing,
