2018 Enshrinement Ceremony
November 7, 2018National Naval Aviation Museum | Pensacola, Florida
Presented by
On behalf of our 254 members, Executive Director Wayne Hogan, our Board of Directors, and our sponsors and volunteers from across the state, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 57th annual
Florida Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremonies presented by Andrews Institute of Sports Orthopaedics and Medicine.Tonight’s eclectic class includes a member of the pro football Hall
of Fame, a young woman who many consider to be the best female basketball player our state has ever produced, a legendary sports broadcaster, a member of baseball’s exclusive 500 Home Run Club, a golfer who has won both a US Open and
a US Amateur, a track star who once claimed the title “World’s Fastest Man” and a boxer who not only won a
world championship but did so in multiple weight classes. With almost half of this class having grown up in this area, we are both honored and pleased to bring this
event to Pensacola and northwest Florida for the first time. The athletic talent this area has produced has been
impressive in both quality and quantity. Frankly, the presence of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in this region
has been long overdue. This is a condition that we are diligently working to rectify, as evidenced by last month’s
Fishing for Fame Tournament in nearby Destin, Tuesday’s Golf Tournament at Pensacola Country Club and
tonight’s Enshrinement event. The fishing tournament will become an annual event, while we hope to make
northwest Florida part of our enshrinement rotation in the years to come. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful partners who have been so engaged and helpful
in making our series of enshrinement events a success. In particular, our presenting sponsor – Andrews
Institute – played a major role in making tonight possible, but many other companies contributed to the effort.
Please take a moment to review the full list of partners listed in this commemorative publication.
Also, I want to offer a big tip of the cap to our FSHOF Board Member “Flash” Gordon Sprague and his local
organizing committee who left no stone unturned here in the region as they promoted and championed this
week’s events on our behalf. The committee, consisting of Keith Hoskins (also a Board Member), Shirley
Cronley, Rodney Rich, Eric Nickelsen, Ray Palmer and Bill Hamilton, has our utmost gratitude.
Thank you again for your attendance and support of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. Your support of tonight’s
enshrinement ceremony, our celebrity golf outing, and our many other events held throughout the year, allows
the Florida Sports Hall of Fame to support many worthy organizations who share our goal to promote the
health and well being of Florida’s youth. Finally, if your travels ever find you in Central Florida, I want to cordially invite you to visit the Florida Sports
Hall of Fame Museum and Preview Center located in Davenport, at the Intersection of I-4 and US 27.
Please enjoy your evening.

Acknowledgements: In addition to the sponsors listed in this program, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame would like to acknowledge and thank the following individuals, companies and organizations for their efforts in making tonight possible: Alabama Sports Information, BLAB-TV, Classic City Catering, Mr. Jeff Conine, Mr. Mickey Dearstone, Mr. Gene Deckerhoff, First Tee of Northwest Florida, Florida Sports Information, Florida State Sports Information, Mr. Eli Gold, Mr. Tom Hammonds, Highpointe Hotels, Mr. Ron Jaworski, Mr. Paul Kennedy, Mr. Jim Lampley, Media Services, Miami Marlins, National Naval Aviation Museum, Ms. Melissa Pihos, Orlando Productions, Pensacola Country Club, Pensacola News Journal, Mr. David Steele, Tennessee Sports Information, TKO, United States Navy, United States Naval Air Station -Pensacola, and WEAR-TV.
Dan Shugart’s broadcasting career began in 1980 when fresh off of an extended stay in college, he moved from Los Angeles to Pensacola. Dan took a part-time news reporting job at WBSR-Radio in Pensacola. That fall, he was the play-by-play announcer for the Pensacola Wings semi-pro football team, which led to his hiring at WEAR in March, 1981. He worked as a weekend sports anchor and general assignment news reporter until he was promoted to sports director in December, 1982.
Dan’s interest in sports comes from his dad, an All-America basketball player at the Naval Academy. Like most Navy kids, Dan moved a lot as a child, living in Maryland, California (several tours), Rhode Island, Hawaii and Virginia. After graduating from high school in San Diego, he arrived at UCLA in time to witness the final two years of the great John Wooden basketball dynasty.
His frenetic youth (10 homes in 17 years) carried over to his academic career, where he careened from a Political Science Major to Psychology, Philosophy, and finally settling into History after developing a deep interest in the subject (and after the dean of students suggested it was time his career moved on). Defying all academic odds, he graduated from UCLA in 1979 with a degree in History. Reading historical nonfiction (mostly on Classic Rome) remains his primary leisure activity away from sports.
He received the Southern League’s Media Award in 2015, has twice earned the AP’s award for the top story in Florida, and was cited by Special Olympics as Florida’s broadcaster of the year for his work with that organization; he has coached youth basketball and he joined his father with his election to the Pensacola Sports Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
Born in Pittsburgh, Bill Vilona’s first birthday was two days after Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski’s walk off home run on October 13, 1960, in Game 7 of the World Series to beat the New York Yankees. Although he doesn’t remember the moment, it spurred a life-long love of Pittsburgh Sports.
Bill attended the University of Tennessee (they were only slightly better in football then) and graduated four years later in 1981 with a journalism degree. He started working immediately as sports writer for Bristol Herald-Courier that summer. He worked six years in Bristol, covering everything from high school sports in east Tennessee and southwest Virginia, to NASCAR and NHRA drag racing, to East Tennessee State athletics. He was on the charter plane covering ETSU basketball on December 17, 1984, when it crashed in Jasper, AL. Miraculously, no one was seriously hurt after an amazing job by the pilot to get the turbo prop plane on the ground. Everyone escaped before it eventually went up in flames.
Bill was hired by the Pensacola News Journal in January 1987. A year later, in the fall of 1988, he began covering Florida State athletics for Gannett News Service. Vilona covered all 14 years of FSU’s dynasty era under Bobby Bowden and was fortunate to cover the Masters, the U.S. Open, the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the World Cup Soccer in Orlando, a Final Four, a Super Bowl, and a variety of other events unrelated to FSU football, basketball and baseball.
Since returning full time to Pensacola, Bill has been a senior writer and columnist – covering a little bit of everything in the Pensacola sports scene. He is a member of the Pensacola Sports Association Hall of Fame as well as the UWF Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc. (DBA The Florida Sports Hall of Fame) is a recognized 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to contribute to initiatives related to the health, wellness and fitness of Florida’s youth. To that end, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame leverages its notable celebrity membership to assist financially, and through the investment of time, energy and other resources, to support a variety of causes affecting our youth.
This year, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame will join hands with the Southern Youth Sports Association to assist that organization in the incredible work they do with the underserved youth of Pensacola. This is in addition to the continuing contributions and relationships the Florida Sports Hall of Fame has with Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches, and Volunteer Florida, an organization that provides hurricane relief to Florida communities and families.
In recent years, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame – through its Fame for Fitness Award – has recognized and provided funding to the Ryan Nece Foundation, which empowers teen community leaders; the ANNIKA Foundation, started by former LPGA star Annika Sorenstam as a way to teach children the importance of a healthy lifestyle; to John Spengler, whose “Wear Your Soul Foundation” is dedicated to helping kids break the cycle of obesity; to Sam Fuld’s “TD1 Sports Camp,” which provides sports camp experiences for children with Type 1 juvenile diabetes; and the Shriners Hospital for Children-Tampa, for their groundbreaking work in transforming the lives of children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft palate and other complex medical conditions. This year, the Hall is proud to honor and recognize the work and to add its support to the 2018 recipient, the Southern Youth Sports Association of Pensacola.
Thank you for your consideration in supporting the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. We are an organization making a difference in the lives of Florida’s young people and their families.

Throughout history, sport has presented us the opportunity to make our communities and neighborhoods stronger. In particular, by supporting initiatives that raise up and encourage our youth to participate in activities that nurture their mind, body and spirit.
As entertainment, sport has provided a sense of normalcy in times of strife, national emergency, or personal tragedy. It can also provide a platform for athletes to do great things for our communities off the playing field. Through sport, we are many times able to provide for those in our society who need our inspiration, encouragement and resources to experience growth, health and a path to success.
The incredible power of sport to lift up, to assimilate and to entertain is recognized by the Florida Sports Hall of Fame through the presentation of its annual Fame for Fitness Award. Each year, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame honors an individual or organization that closely mirrors its mission of promoting physical fitness awareness, education, and the general health and welfare of Florida’s children.
Our 2018 and seventh recipient of the Fame for Fitness Award is the Southern Youth Sports Association of Pensacola.
“The Florida Sports Hall of Fame has a mission to use our considerable reach and celebrity profile to recognize organizations like SYSA, who give countless hours and personal dedication in an effort to make life better for deserving inner city kids,” said Barry Smith, the Hall of Fame’s President. “It is a heartwarming story and one that needs to be told. After all, every one of our Hall of Fame members started out on playgrounds and fields much like those in northwest Florida.”
The Southern Youth Sports Association is a grass roots non-profit organization whose mission is to respond to the academic, social and physical needs of each child through the involvement of community, students and staff. Its programs focus on the development of responsibility, cooperation and acceptance by emphasizing the 4 B’s – Bible, Books, Ball and Balance. The SYSA offers basketball, cheerleading, baseball, football, tutoring, after-school and GED programs.
“My father taught me a long time ago, that if you can change your block, or change your neighborhood, you can change the world. That’s the spirit behind SYSA,” said its director Lumon May. “It is an honor for SYSA to be recognized by the Florida Sports Hall of Fame for this award, and a testament to the love, passion, and energy that our volunteers pour out every single day for our young people.”

MICKEY ANDREWSTonight we take time to honor the man perhaps most responsible for the legacy of what is now referred to as “The Bowden Dynasty” at Florida State University. A former All-America standout at wide receiver and defensive back at the University of Alabama, the coaching career of Mickey Andrews spans five decades.
After head coaching stops at Livingston and North Alabama, Andrews would spend several years at Clemson, Florida and the United States Football League as a defensive coordinator. He would then spend the next quarter century helping build the Seminoles into a national power. As a defensive backs coach, Andrews would make FSU one of the top producers of All-America and NFL caliber defensive backs, coaching two Jim Thorpe Award Winners – Deion Sanders and Terrell Buckley – and having at least one consensus All-America cornerback for eight consecutive seasons.
Seven of his defenses finished in the top five in the country in total defense, while his 1998 defense finished first in the nation in both total and passing defense. In 1996, Mickey was selected recipient of the Frank Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top Assistant Coach. As Florida State’s defensive coordinator and later as its Assistant Head Coach, Mickey played a key role in helping Florida State to one of the most noteworthy and significant accomplishments in college football history. From 1987 until 2000, the Seminoles embarked on a journey where they would finish in the Top 5 of both major polls for 14 consecutive years and win a pair of national championships.
After retiring in 2009, Mickey Andrews returned to Florida State this fall as a special advisor and consultant to new head coach Willie Taggert.

MORE THAN A MUSEUM
The Florida Sports Hall of Fame is more than a Museum and Induction Ceremony. The organization prides itself on the many charitable works and philanthropic efforts throughout the year. Through golf and fishing tournaments, the induction ceremony, and other special events, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame has raised thousands of dollars for worthwhile causes. This is in addition to the individual efforts of its members. 2017 inductees Warrick Dunn (Home for the Holidays, Warrick Dunn Charities) and Tim Tebow (A Night to Shine, Tim Tebow Foundation) are prime examples of the impact our members have on their communities and the nation.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACHING DOMINANCE
The Florida Sports Hall of Fame boasts seven members (Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier, Howard Schnellenberger, Bill Peterson, Ray Graves and Jake Gaither) that have been among the most successful college football coaches of all time. The seven have a combined record of 1,146-495-29 (.694 winning percentage). Led by Bowden (357 wins), the seven have averaged a stunning 164 career wins each, have WON 53 bowl games and have claimed 11 national championships.
MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT
Although not required to gain induction into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, winning one of the major golf tournaments never hurts. Of the 24 golfers in the FSHOF, 18 have won majors (75%) on the LPGA, PGA or Champions Tour. Jack Nicklaus leads all inductees with 26 majors (18 PGA, 8 Senior), followed by Patty Berg (12 LPGA) and Arnold Palmer (7 PGA, 5 Senior). The 24 golfers (2 former PGA Commissioners are also members) in the Florida Sports Hall of Fame have accounted for 99 major titles.

SELECTION PROCESS
Any individual may nominate a candidate for selection to the
Florida Sports Hall of Fame. To be eligible, prospective members must have been born or raised in Florida or have achieved a significant portion of their athletic notoriety within the state. Individuals may nominate prospective candidates by sending the nominee’s name, sport and biographical information to any of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame’s officers, it’s executive director or any member of its Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will then assure that the potential nominee meets the criteria for inclusion onto the official ballot for selection.
Each year the organization’s Board, along with a select group of current members of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, hold a meeting for the purpose of selecting that year’s class from the ballot of vetted candidates. Those nominees selected for enshrinement to the Florida Sports Hall of Fame must be personally present at the induction ceremony to complete the process of membership.
BACK ON THE SIDELINES
Once a coach always a coach. Florida Sports Hall of Fame member Steve Spurrier retired as head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2015. Earlier this year, the legendary “Ball Coach” announced he would be returning to the sidelines as the Head Coach of the Orlando Apollos of the new Alliance of American Football, an eight-team professional league that will begin play in the spring of 2019.
PIHOS BECOMES 19TH DUAL MEMBER
2018 Florida Sports Hall of Fame Inductee (Posthumously) Pete Pihos becomes the 19th member of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame to also hold membership in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Pihos joins other notables like Jack Youngblood, Deion Sanders, Deacon Jones and Don Shula as members of both Halls.
ONE MORE ROUND FOR MARTIN IN 2019
Elected to the Florida State Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, FSU baseball coach Mike Martin announced that 2019 would be his 40th and final season as head coach of the Seminoles. In his remarkable career, Martin is the all-time NCAA leader in coaching wins with 1,987. In an era where 30 wins a season is considered a benchmark for excellence, Martin has AVERAGED 50 wins a year during his career.
PRESSURE DEFINED
Elected to the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, Golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez explained what real pressure was, “Tournament golf is
not pressure. Pressure is playing for $5 a hole when you only have $2 in your pocket.”
