CEO AND BOARD LETTER

Karn NielsenBoard ChairBarrie RyanVice Chair, DevelopmentKirsten FittererVice Chair, NominationsKottayam NatarajanTreasurerAmanda ParrishSecretary

In 2018, the Trump administration continued its ruthless attempts to block patients from seeking care at Planned Parenthood. You stood strong in your refusal to back down.

When wave after wave of dangerous threats came crashing down on our most vulnerable community members, you bravely faced the onslaught against people’s basic human rights: their right to health care, bodily autonomy, safety, and dignity.

You amplified the voices of the marginalized and made it possible for our region’s residents to continue accessing compassionate, quality care at PPGWNI’s health centers.

The year was full of setbacks. But because we stand together, there were also many wins! We are grateful for your support and hope this report will inspire you to talk about all the great work you made possible.

In solidarity,

Karl Eastlund, President & CEO and Karn Nielsen, Board Chair

INTERSECTIONAL ADVOCACY

Raíz: !Si Se Pudo! (Yes We Did!)In May 2018, PPGWNI became the only affiliate on the West Coast to receive a grant to become part of the Raíz program, a national effort to engage the Latinx community. Raíz (Spanish for “root”) builds long-term, sustainable community organizing structures through civic engagement and self-advocacy with a reproductive health focus.

Raíz organizers have worked on voter registration, Medicaid expansion, and immigration reform. We also worked with the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network to protest ICE’s racially biased armed searches on Greyhound buses in the Spokane area. These efforts led to our collaboration with Spokane’s City Council President and other allies to draft a city ordinance requiring ICE obtain a warrant from a judge to enter non-public areas of city-owned property, including Spokane Intermodal bus station. The ordinance passed city council in October with a six to one vote!

PPGWNI advocacy teams have been conducting outreach efforts in collaboration with each community served by our health centers. Through our paid staff, growing volunteer base, and community partnerships, we are proud to participate in local movements that impact the intersecting dimensions and wellbeing of our patients.

Our various outreach teams facilitated our participation in the following community-led events throughout Eastern WA.

• Keeping Families Together• Annual PRIDE Festivities• Stop Kavanaugh Nomination Protests• Hispanic Heritage Celebrations• Roe v. Wade anniversary events• Annual Women’s March• World AIDS Day• Trans Day of Remembrance

HEALTH CARE

Transgender Health ProgramTransgender and gender-diverse people, like everyone else, have a fundamental need for quality, affordable health care, and to be treated with dignity and respect. To fill major access gaps in our region, PPGWNI is excited that we now offer services for the transgender and gender-diverse community through our Transgender Health Program. In January, all PPGWNI health centers began providing gender-affirming hormone therapy and resources and referrals for transgender-specific medical, legal, and social services. By the end of 2018, we had provided 642 patients affirming and supportive care.

On my first day as the Transgender Health & Community Coordinator I heard, “Today, I have

hope” from a young transgender man as he left an appointment for gender-affirming hormone therapy.

- Lucas Leek, PPGWNI Transgender Health & Community Coordinator

6

Expanding Health Care Access with New TechnologyThrough the strategic use of technology innovations, PPGWNI is now even more responsive to the contraceptive needs of our patients. Emergency contraception is also more accessible.

7

HONEST EDUCATION

Education Lawsuit SuccessIn mid-2017, PPGWNI was blindsided when we were told our federal teen pregnancy prevention grant would be terminated two years early without cause. In response, PPGWNI filed a coordinated lawsuit with two other Planned Parenthood affiliates against the Trump administration. In April, a federal judge in Spokane County heard our case and handed down his decision in our favor!

His decision stated that the Department of Health and Human Services could not terminate the grant two years early and is obligated to proceed with the grant process as originally agreed. This is a big win for the teens in our region who will have continued access to reliable, evidence-based, comprehensive sexual health education. Our Education and Public Affairs teams fought so hard to keep this funding, and their efforts ensure we can continue to nurture healthy, knowledgeable community members for generations to come.

Fighting—And Lobbying—For Our RightsPlanned Parenthood Advocates of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPAGWNI) is a brand new, local, independent, nonprofit, non-partisan 501(c)(4) organization dedicated to protecting and expanding individual rights to reproductive choice and access to family planning for all people.

The advocacy work of fearless supporters like you has protected health care services and education by influencing public policy. Now, with an independent 501(c)(4), we can take the fight to the next level! We are ready to elevate and add strength to the emerging progressive communities east of the Cascades with dedicated lobbying power. PPAGWNI will help ensure we build champions who will protect our basic rights and fight to protect the patients who rely on Planned Parenthood’s care each year.

Forming and operating this 501(c)(4) would not have been possible without the significant increase in donors and volunteers in our region who are taking action locally!
