2018-19 PROGRAM REPORT
AND LIKE SOMEONE ELSE YOU KNOW, WE KEEP GOING … AND GOING … AND GOING …Searching through the TV channels one night, I came across one of the all-time great movies, “The Wizard of Oz.” In the film’s description, it was referred to as a “beloved 80-year-old classic,” which honestly caught me by surprise. 80 years old? Could that be right? Seemed difficult to believe.
A quick online search, however, confirmed that the original silver-screen version of Dorothy, Toto and company was indeed celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2019. And, as I continued on, I discovered they were in good company. Surprisingly, 2019 is the anniversary year for many memorable and significant achievements.
For instance, this year ironically marks both the 100th anniversary of the start of prohibition in the U.S. and the 50th anniversary of Woodstock (could there be two more diverse occasions?). The U.S. moonwalk also celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019. And one of my favorite TV shows and one of my favorite TV commercials both celebrate 30 years in our pop culture in 2019 — Seinfeld and The Energizer Bunny, respectively. Yes, that rabbit certainly does keep going and going.
There were two anniversaries, though, that I didn’t need that website to remind me of. Two very special, personal anniversaries. The first — my 32nd wedding anniversary (just three years from the big 3-5. What’s the traditional anniversary gift for 35 years anyway?!). And the second — WEDnetPA’s 20th year of existence here in the Commonwealth.
Yes, 2019 marks 20 years of WEDnetPA workforce training assistance for Pennsylvania businesses. 33,525 grants awarded over two decades. 20,683 companies. 1,238,915 workers who benefitted from the training — as did their families … those families’ communities … and those communities’ standards of living.
As you’ll see in this Annual Report, WEDnetPA has again made a significant, far-reaching impact on the collective economic environment of Pennsylvania, as it has in all our 20 years. Our training funds help companies remain competitive in their markets by improving the skills of their workers. Workers, who in turn, become more productive contributors to bottom lines. And, in some cases, are promoted to higher positions within the company, creating new employment opportunities for other residents. As I mentioned previously, the ripple effects associated with a better-trained workforce continues on and on.
I’m very proud of our 20-year record of helping to provide the training that enables Pennsylvania’s manufacturers and technology companies to compete and excel. I look forward to many more years of helping companies access our valuable training resources. So, they too, can celebrate many of their own special anniversaries in the future.
Sincerely,
P.S. As my wife recently informed me since the first draft of this letter, the gift for a 35th anniversary is coral. And as she also not-so-subtly pointed out, there is a lot of it in the Caribbean. Hint taken.
