Ross Jones joined the St. Johns River State College coaching staff as the head base-ball coach in 2008 and assumed the position of athletic director in 2009. Jones’ first season at the helm saw the Viking base-ball team finish the 2009 season with a 33-17 record. The 33 wins surpassed the previous school record of 30 wins in a season set in 1982. The Viking baseball
team won the Mid-Florida Con-ference championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Jones is a 1984 gradu-ate of Palatka High School. Upon graduating from high school, Jones was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1984 Major League Baseball amateur draft. He spent seven seasons pitching for the Rang-ers and Montreal Expos minor
league systems. After retiring from professional baseball, Jones earned his A.A. degree from SJR State in 1991 and his bachelor’s degree in edu-cation from the University of North Florida in 1993. Jones’ coaching career started at UNF in 1993. He spent 12 years coaching in the Southeastern Conference at Vanderbilt and the University of Florida.

Beginning his second season this year, José Rivera is no strang-er to St. Johns River State College. He came from conference rival
Florida State College at Jackson-ville, where he had served as an assistant coach since 2003 and head volleyball coach since 2013. In his rst season at FSCJ, Rive-ra led his team to a 26-9 record and was 6-2 in conference play. During his tenure, Rivera posted a record of 55-56 for FSCJ. A native of Puerto Rico, Rivera was introduced to coaching while at his alma mater, Livingston Uni-versity, where he served as an as-sistant volleyball coach and inter-im head coach in the early 1990s. From there, Rivera joined Missis-sippi State University, where he remained as an assistant coach until 1997 when he became the
head volleyball coach at Jackson-ville State University in Alabama. Rivera posted a record of 70-71 at Jacksonville State. During this time, he also founded and direct-ed the Cheaha Juniors Volleyball Club. In 2001, Rivera relocated to Sarasota, Florida, where he coached for the White Sands Vol-leyball Club and the 2002 Florida Region High Performance Youth Team. Rivera arrived in Jacksonville, Florida in 2003, where he taught physical education for Duval County Public Schools and began coaching at FSCJ. Rivera has also coached for the Jacksonville Ju-nior Volleyball Association and is
a member of the regional teach-ing cadre for the USA Volleyball organization (USAV), the national governing body for the sport of volleyball in the United States. Rivera holds a bachelor’s de-gree in physical education and athletic training and a master’s degree in education from Living-ston University. He and his wife, Leanna, live in St. Augustine.

During his tenure at the College of Central Florida, Marion was an
integral part of five of the Pa-triots’ Mid-Florida Conference championships and four NJCAA national championship ap-pearances. After attending SJR State as a dual enrollment student, As-sistant Coach Briana Kelley con-tinued her education at Santa Fe College before transferring to the University of Florida, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a master’s de-gree in Mental Health Counseling. She began working at the Alach-ua County Sheriff’s Office in 2003, assisting with teaching and team building for 9-1-1 telecommuni-
cators and training officers. Kel-ley’s current role as a workforce advisor for SJR State allows her to connect with Putnam County youth via onsite advising days and classroom presentations at local high schools. She also oversees a scholarship mentoring program at SJR State and provides support for scholarship recipients. Instill-ing hope and providing support as students transition along their educational journey is her prima-
ry focus. Kelley was a founding mem-ber of the West Putnam Pop Warner Association, where she served as president from 2014 – 2017. She has also volunteered with other Putnam County youth sports programs, including the West Putnam Athletic Associa-tion’s baseball program from 2012 – 2013. She has assisted both on and off the field in organizational structure and directing youth.
