(2-1, 0-0 CAA), Northwestern (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten) and South Carolina
(3-0, 0-0 SEC) in the 2017 Duke Invitational. Admission is free to
all six matches.
2017 Duke Invitational Schedule

9/1 Northwestern vs. South Carolina 12 p.m.
9/1 South Carolina vs. UNCW 5 p.m.
9/1 Duke vs. Northwestern 7 p.m.

u LAST TIME OUTDuke went 3-0 to start the season with wins over Colorado State
(3-2), Central Florida (3-2) and Northern Colorado (3-0). Down 14-10
in the fifth set at CSU, Duke fought off four match points to tie
the frame, ultimately winning the set 20-18 after Leah Meyer and
Cadie Bates kills. Bates turned in a tremendous weekend, totaling a
career-high 20 kills in the season opener. Playing all six rotations,
Bates registered double-doubles in Duke’s first two matches and to-
taled a team-best 43 kills to go along with 32 digs, eight blocks and
four service aces for the weekend to earn Duke Student-Athlete of
the Week honors.
u AGAINST THE FIELD2017 marks the third consecutive season in which Duke faces
UNCW. The Blue Devils are 5-0 all-time against the Seahawks, in-
cluding home victories in 2015 (3-0) and 2016 (3-2). Northwestern
is a less familiar foe as Duke takes on the Wildcats for the first time
since 1990. The Blue Devils own a 3-0 mark versus Northwestern
with wins in 1986 (2-1), 1989 (3-2) and 1990 (3-2). Duke and South
Carolina have squared off 17 times in program history, but the
Blue Devils and the Gamecocks have met just once since 2004, a
four-set home victory for Duke in 2013. The Blue Devils lead the
all-time series, 10-7.
u MEYER PRESEASON ALL-ACCJunior middle blocker Leah Meyer earned 2017 Preseason All-ACC
recognition after leading the 2016 Blue Devils with 139 blocks and
ranking second on the team with 316 kills. Meyer garnered AVCA
All-East Coast Region and First Team All-ACC accolades for her
sophomore season performance. As a team, Duke was picked to
finish seventh in the conference by a vote of the league’s 15 head
coaches.
u DUKE ADDS FOUR NEWCOMERSHead coach Jolene Nagel and her staff added four players to the
2017 roster in freshman middle blocker Summer Brown (Morrow,
Ga.), freshman outside hitter Payton Schwantz (Frisco, Texas),
junior setter Haley Seyfarth (Bentonville, Ark.) and freshman
defensive specialist Kincey Smith (Wake Forest, N.C.). Brown was
named the 2016 GHSA AAA Player of the Year after totaling 206
kills, 78 blocks and 24 aces as a senior. Schwantz collected MVP
and all-tournament honors at the 2016 USA Volleyball National
Championships, helping her TAV 17 Black club squad to the gold
medal in the 17 Open division. Seyfarth joins the Blue Devils follow-
ing an extremely successful career at Palm Beach State College
that culminated with 2016 NJCAA First Team All-America honors.
Lastly, Smith was a four-time all-conference selection and 2015
conference player of the year, leading North Raleigh Christian
Academy to back-to-back state championships while also garnering
all-state and All-Metro accolades.
u SUSTAINED SUCCESSThe 2016 Blue Devils (21-9, 15-5 ACC) surpassed 20 wins for the
27th time in the program’s 46-year history. Duke has topped 20
wins in 10 of the past 12 seasons. In 18 campaigns under head
coach Jolene Nagel, the Blue Devils won 20 or more matches 14
times. In addition, Duke finished the 2016 season tied for third in
the ACC standings. One of the most consistent ACC programs, the
Blue Devils finished in the top three in the league standings in 13 of
the past 16 seasons.

anchoring the Blue Devil back row since 2004 in Sasha Karelov
(2014-16), Ali McCurdy (2010-13) and Jenny Shull (2004-07). Those
three all surpassed 2,000 digs for their respective careers. Karelov,
McCurdy and Shull also helped Duke lead the ACC in digs per set
in nine of the past 13 seasons, including each of the past four. All
three continue to rank in the league’s top 10 in career digs and
digs per set. Senior Nicole Elattrache won the job coming out of
preseason and led the team with 44 digs the opening weekend.
