Our History

The Nutley-Belleville Christopher Columbus Day Parade was born out of a community spirit that encompassed the local Italian Americans living in Nutley and Belleville. At first, the parade was a local event, but today, this popular parade has grown to include about 1,000 participants, and over 2,500 spectators. What is particularly impressive is that the entire production is run by the all-volunteer Nutley Belleville Columbus Day Parade Committee. Belleville resident Vincent "Jimmy" Donadia and Nutley resident John V. Kelly co-founded the Nutley-Belleville Columbus Day parade in the early 1980s; both men invested $1,500 towards the event. Donadia was born in Nutley on King Street and was owner of Donadia Disposal in Rutherford. Donadia died in 2007 at 95. Kelly, who was born to an Irish father and Italian mother in Jersey City, was a former Nutley mayor and served nine terms in the New Jersey General Assembly. He was also president of Nutley Savings Bank. Kelly died in 2009 at 83. Every year marching bands from local schools proudly march in the parade and display their skills. The Nutley High School and Belleville High School Marching Bands, are featured in the parade every year. Various Italian-American groups, marching bands and the Belleville and Nutley police and fire departments always participate in the parade. Each year Italian-American organizations such as The Federation of Italian American Societies of N.J., and Nutley UNICO proudly sponsor the Arma dei Carabinieri,( Italian Police) to participate in our Parade. This parade is much more than a day filled with balloons, marchers, floats and candy. It has become a day for our communities to honor local residents and businessmen who have exemplified the values of our organization. Our honorees have demonstrated they can preserve their Italian culture and embrace their heritage while giving back to the community. These honorees truly show us all what it is to be an American of Italian decent. As the years pass, the parade, the marchers and the organizers all agree on one thing: It’s great to be part of the giant melting pot we call America, and it’s magical to celebrate and honor the mark Columbus made not only for all people of Italian descent, but also for all immigrants and Americans everywhere. We welcome you to join us and become part of this wonderful adventure.
