- In Question 1, the candidate briefly described the spatial distribution of major volcanoes in the Pacific region.

He/she used his/her geographical knowledge in an appropriate way to compare the formation of volcanoes X and

Y. He/she basically understood the negative impacts of the eruption of volcano Y and clearly explained how

technology could reduce such impacts. However, he/she should not have included the formation of acid rain in

the answer. Finally, he/she discussed appropriately the opportunities and risks brought about by volcano Y.

- In Question 2, the candidate clearly described the land uses specified on the map extract and briefly explained the

urban problems in area X with reference to the information provided. He/she correctly identified the urban

renewal strategy shown in Figure 2b as ‘revitalisation’ and discussed its merits using geographical concepts.

Finally, he/she discussed in detail the demerits of rehabilitation but should have elaborated on its merits as well.

- In Question 6, the candidate understood well the nature and production mode of the IT industry and clearly

explained the characteristics of the global locational distribution of this industry. He/she also thoroughly

discussed the role of the US government in expanding the development of the IT industry in its own country.

- The candidate demonstrated sound knowledge of the curriculum and communicated his/her knowledge

and understanding with accurate use of geographical terminology. He/she exhibited a balanced performance in

both the structured question and the short essay question.

- In Question 2, the candidate demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of the factors affecting the temperature

patterns of Hong Kong and city X. He/she made good use of geographical terminology to compare the

temperature patterns of the two cities. He/she also systematically described the changes in weather conditions

before and after the passage of a cold front. However, he/she should have explained the weather phenomenon

more clearly. He/she should also have mentioned the southward movement of cold air in an

anti-cyclonic outflow after the passage of the cold front, causing high pressure and a clear sky.

- In Question 8, the candidate provided a detailed account of the industrial development of the Zhujiang Delta

Region in the last decade. He/she logically explained the development and supported this with appropriate

examples. He/she comprehensively discussed the importance of scientific research and human resources on the

industrial development of the region. He/she communicated his knowledge and understanding of the

topic consistently in a coherent and logical manner, making use of extensive geographical terminology

and the concept of spatial location.
