Dear Friends,In the face of change, it is community that binds us together. Within the Community Foundation, we are united by a desire to serve others. Working in a spirit of possibility and partnership, we make an impact that’s far greater than if we act alone. And in this same spirit we form the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado family.

As part of this family, we look out for the best long-term interests of the region. For example:

Our staff has been working with a newly established nonprofit board to transform Sky Corral Ranch, which is located in the foothills west of Fort Collins. With the leadership of the Sky Corral Board – and the generosity of many donors – the ranch will become a sustainable and impactful community asset providing a conference and retreat venue for local nonprofit groups. Beginning this summer, the doors will be open to all community groups!

The Colorado Water Institute at Colorado State University partnered with the Community Foundation to form the first class of Water Literate Leaders. With this program, our emerging leaders will better understand water in the West – one of the most complex and controversial subjects that affects our regional landscape. (Read more on page 5.)

We worked with Bohemian Foundation to initiate Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund and collected over 1,000 donations, primarily from Northern Colorado residents. As a result, our Hurricane Fund is providing over $1 million to support communities affected by the disastrous hurricane season. (Read more on page 5.)

Through the efforts of many generous donors, talented volunteers, and nonprofit organizations, community visions become reality. The Community Foundation team provides personalized service and transformational opportunities to every unique situation that finds its way to our door.

We invite you to visit the Foundation to creatively explore how to match resources with passion and leave an enduring legacy.

Let’s work together to shape the future of Northern Colorado.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

LOVELAND SERTOMA SERVES COMMUNITYLoveland Sertoma (SERvice TO MAnkind) focuses its efforts on fundraising projects that serve to better the Loveland community. The primary goal of the club’s 80+ members is to give of their time, talents, and financial support to benefit over a dozen nonprofit organizations and causes.

When deciding where to place funds, the group established a “wish list.” The club was looking for a foundation with an excellent reputation for local

management, a vehicle that would allow individual members to make direct contributions, and a sustainable mechanism to assist in achieving Sertoma’s philanthropic goals. The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado was a perfect fit.

The Community Foundation assists donors to maximize the impact of their philanthropy and fulfill the unique legacy they envision. We make charitable giving easy, effective, and enjoyable by acting as the long-term steward of assets.

Giving Strategically

You have philanthropists and business leaders linked together behind one vision, and that becomes fuel that drives you. It becomes the glue that binds you. The scope and the power of that kind of team is unstoppable.”ERIK WEIHENMAYER, FOUNDER OF NO BARRIERS, KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR 2017 ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF PHILANTHROPY

CURT W. BURGENER FAMILY FUND FOCUSES ON YOUTHCurt Burgener operates a successful third-generation trucking business, established by his grandparents in 1946. He believes younger generations will make the largest impact on the future, and that we all need to be dedicated to helping youth strive by providing education and group support.

“Along with success comes the opportunity to help others,” Curt said. One way his family accomplished this was by establishing a Donor Advised fund at the Community Foundation. “We must remember to teach our children the importance of philanthropy and look for moments to demonstrate being humble and generous so kids have a good example to follow.”

We chose the Community Foundation because of its outstanding reputation for helping the local community. From our experience, that reputation is well-earned.”CURT BURGENER

COLORADO’S HURRICANE RECOVERY FUND MAKES A DIFFERENCE When disaster strikes, Coloradoans respond. First-hand, when possible; but in the case of distant catastrophes like the devastating 2017 hurricane season, it is our dollars that make the greatest impact for those in need.

Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund, a partnership between Fort Collins-based Bohemian Foundation and the Community Foundation, highlighted our ability to connect donors with causes they care about.

After Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria hit Texas, Florida, and U.S. territories in the Caribbean, Bohemian Foundation generously offered to match donations from Coloradoans dollar-for-dollar. By December 31, 2017, 1,044 Coloradoans donated more than $1.1 million, including the $548,302 match from Bohemian Foundation.

By leveraging our existing relationships with philanthropic organizations, the Foundation is distributing that funding to well-vetted, local nonprofits. Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund truly making a difference in the lives of thousands of people!

FUNDING THE FUTURE

A SALUTE TO THE POWER OF ENDOWMENT GIVINGIda J. Murphy and Russel O. Allen Fund

From its inception in 1999, the Ida J. Murphy and Russel O. Allen Fund has provided a model for the lasting impact of a charitable endowment.

With careful management by the Community Foundation, the initial gift to the fund of $781,666 has almost doubled in value. Endowment earnings have led to upwards of $780,000 in distributions to nonprofits that support the medical, psychiatric, and psychological health care needs of children under six years old.

In keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Murphy and Dr. Allen, the Community Foundation will now distribute the remaining fund balance to foster the health of Fort Collins children. Matching grants totaling $500,000 will go to four local nonprofits – all previous grant recipients – to grow their respective or new endowments managed by the Community Foundation. Another $165,000 in operating gifts will target the health care needs of young children.

I faced the possibility of significant debt in the form of student loans until I found the Ruth Henderson Memorial Scholarship. It gave me the resources to transfer to a university to pursue my bachelor’s degree after completing my associate degree.” ALLISON OWENS, RUTH HENDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT AND GRADUATE OF UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN COLORADO WITH BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

RUTH HENDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Ruth Henderson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 to honor Mrs. Ruth Henderson’s life-long dedication to teaching and community service in Eastern Colorado. Since its inception, 19 students have received this award, and more than $295,000 has been distributed to benefit well-deserving students from communities in Eastern Colorado.

Keep Funds LocalEASTERN COLORADO COMMUNITY FUND

The United States is in the midst of the largest transfer of wealth in history. Much of this wealth will come from rural America as assets are transferred to children who have moved away from their home community.

If even a small percentage of wealth in Eastern Colorado remained in the community, it could provide millions of dollars each year for reinvestment in hometowns – to strengthen education, the arts, recreation, healthcare, and entrepreneurship for future generations.

Many people have the desire to give, but struggle to find the appropriate vehicle. The ECCF now provides a meaningful way for residents of Eastern Colorado to give back.” JOHN CHAPDELAINE, DIRECTOR, EASTERN COLORADO COMMUNITY FUND
