NASA HUNCH Final Review

Shown below are some pictures from yesterday's Final Review held at Johnson Space Center. NASA HUNCH (High School Students United to Create Hardware) student Dakota Anderson is pictured below showing off his zero-gravity scale. From close to 300 different projects from HUNCH schools around the country, Dakota made the "invite list" so that he could present his idea to astronauts and engineers present at the event. One of the many highlights

was students signing their names to flight hardware scheduled to go to the space station soon. Also at JSC is Saturday's annual Award Ceremony recognizing the efforts and contributions of all HUNCH students who participated in this year's project designs.

Online Safety

Keeping our children safe while working or playing online is a full-time job. At school and at home, students can open up themselves to issues for which they are not prepared. Whether it’s dealing with an adult predator posing as a teen or simply sharing their family’s vacation (and empty house) plans with too many online friends, young adults are trusting to the point of endangering themselves. And, while cell phones make it convenient for parents and students to stay in contact, they also become a tracking device for others who may not have good intentions. Many apps often requests access for location services with photo apps geo-tagging pictures. Tips on the safe use of and disabling location services are available on the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) website at https://tea.texas.gov/Academics/Learning_Support_and_Programs/Technology_Resources/Internet_Safety__Communication/ Cyberbullying is another threat that we didn’t grow up with but that our children can face. According to Leah MacDermid, with Two Hat Security, a 2016 report by Cyberbullying Research Center states that “33.8% of students between 12 and 17 were victims of cyberbullying in their lifetime.” Unlike past generations, today’s students can be the subjects of unwanted attention and harassment 24/7 because of social media. Following your child on social media is one way to ensure your child’s online safety and behavior. In addition to protecting them from others right now, colleges and scholarship committees often review a prospect’s online presence before making an offer. Always remind your child to stop and think before posting on social media as that information can be found for a long, long time. Please take some time this weekend to review the TEA links and to discuss your child’s social media and online habits.

Yearbook

Congratulations to Sarah Ellison and her yearbook staff members for the overall success with yearbook sales and production. Mrs. Ellison was presented with a Yearbook Yearbook pendant at Minute Maid Park, which is a prestigious honor for Oak Ridge. The Aerie will be in the Yearbook Yearbook publication that recognizes high schools and colleges for their outstanding designs, layouts, copies, pictures, and hardwork put in by the staff members and advisors. Yearbooks should arrive on campus in the next two weeks or so. Please be on the look out for the Yearbook Release Event that will be held after school. Students will be able to pick up their yearbook at the event. Extras may be delivered with shipment, so if you are interested in being in the waitlist, please contact Sarah Ellison at [email protected]

Cheerleading

Congratulations to the Oak Ridge Cheer program for being selected at the VYPE Cheerleading Squad of the Year. Coach Ellison and team members will be recognized at the 1st Annual VYPE Awards on May 6th.

Deliveries to Campus

Students who have left items at home such as athletic clothes, homework/projects, money, etc. should stop by the front office and see if these items have been delivered. No items of this nature will be delivered to the student in the classroom. Deliveries from florist and other outside vendors will not be accepted. Balloon bouquets and floral arrangements are not allowed in the halls or classrooms.

Food Deliveries to School

Oak Ridge High School will not accept student lunch deliveries from a restaurant or from a delivery service such as "doordash." The only lunches that are accepted in the front office are those delivered by a parent or family member and should be picked up in the cafeteria at the Principal’s table during the student’s lunch period. Thank you for you cooperation.

Crosswalks! Students! The crosswalk signs are for your protection...please make sure to press the button to engage the signs whenever crossing the street. Thank you.

PTO News!

I can’t believe it is April 27th already! In approximately one month it will be graduation for our seniors and the end of another school year. Next month is an exciting one for our seniors with Prom, Top 15% lunch, Senior Awards Night, Senior Picnic and Graduation!! Please remind them to hang in there and remain focused for this last month of their high school career.

We really appreciate all the parents who have offered to donate food items and or time for our Teacher Appreciation Breakfast next Friday, May 4th. If you have not signed up please consider doing so, we still need additional items especially for the senior campus. We are requesting Muffins, Croissants and Scones which can all be dropped off at the front office on Thursday, May 3rd. If you want to bring a fruit tray, that must be dropped off on Friday, May 4th at the front office. Another way to show our teachers your support is to go on your Parent Access site and choose Teachers/Staff Excellence (TAE) and write a compliment for someone who you feel has made a positive impact on your student. This is a wonderful way to say Thank You!!

Please mark your calendars for Monday, April 30th for PTO Spirit Night! If your daughter is looking for some special jewelry to match her dress for prom, or if you need a graduation gift, head over to Kendra Scott at Marketplace. They are hosting an ORHS PTO spirit night from 6:00-8:00pm where you can shop and save 10% on all orders. If you can't physically get to the store, you just need to call and mention ORHS PTO and they will give you the discount and free shipping!! Now is the time to shop and take advantage of savings!!

Red Robin is also hosting an ORHS PTO Spirit Night on Monday, April 30th from 4:00-8:00pm. This would be a great place to have dinner before or after the NHS Induction Ceremony on Monday, April 30th, or just because you are craving one of their amazing shakes and burgers! Just remind your waiter/waitress that you are there for the ORHS PTO Spirit Night!!

If you have any questions or comments for PTO, please send us an email at [email protected]

Thanks,

Leslie Oak Ridge High School PTO [email protected] oakridgepto.com
