Welcome

Dr. Harvey Weingarten

2

Dear Dental Colleagues,

We live in exciting times! This will be the fifth year of my tenure as the director of the Continuing Education Department at the IU School of Dentistry. This past year was busy as we finally moved into our new offices. Come visit us at 1050 Wishard Blvd. on the second floor. We will hold many of our smaller classes and seminars in our training room here at the new facility. Otherwise look for us to hold our other classes at the IU School of Dentistry, the Campus Center, or other off-campus venues as they are announced.

As part of our Emphasis Series this year we are pleased to announce an entire curriculum associated with Implants! As many of you may already know, the school has recruited two new faculty members, Dr. Dean Morton, our Prosthodontics chair, and Dr. Waldemar Polido, our Oral Surgery Pre-Doctoral Program director. They have collaborated to create three exciting courses relative to implants. These courses are being held in conjunction with our new Center for Implant, Aesthetic and Innovative Dentistry facility located on the fourth floor of the dental school. Please refer to page 10 in the catalog, as well as our web page at http://ce.dentistry.iu.edu for additional information.

We begin the pages of our catalog with the backbone of our practices – the allied health auxiliaries. We have again put together an exciting Dental Hygiene Series. Each of the three programs of the series are filled with information that is important, relevant and timely. In addition to the series, we will also offer our traditional Expanded Functions for Dental Assisting, Coronal Polishing and Fluoride Application for Dental Assisting, Radiology Certification Training for Dental Assisting and Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygiene. We encourage dental practice staff to attend any and/or all of our courses because the additional knowledge will empower them to assist with the best treatment for your patients.

The Faculty Focus Series continues to grow in attendance, and we are especially proud of the accomplishments, research and interests of our faculty members. Every month a different dental school department will present an informative lecture in a format that fits your schedule. Consider signing up for the entire series and attend the required Ethics and Jurisprudence course for free. In addition, if your entire office needs to be certified in CPR, please contact us so we can design a program to fit your schedule if one of our programs is not convenient. For further information visit our website at http://ce.dentistry.iu.edu, e-mail us at [email protected] or call toll free at 888-373-4873.

We are approaching 25 years that we have partnered with the Indiana Dental Association to bring you the IUSD-IDA Academy of Continuing Education. This year we continue that tradition with both spring and fall course offerings that will complement your abilities and enhance your knowledge base. Our collaborative efforts to bring continuing education opportunities to IU School of Dentistry do not end there. Look for the Burstone Symposium, held every other year in conjunction with the Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics, the MK Hine/Laskin Lecture Series each spring with the Indiana Section of the American College of Dentists, the Mini Pediatric Residency with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for its review course in the fall, and the John F. Johnston Refresher course coming up next summer. If your group would like to collaborate on a continuing education project, please feel free to contact me personally.

In bridging all of our communication styles we are publishing this catalog as well as posting it on the IU School of Dentistry Continuing Education website at http://ce.dentistry.iu.edu. Please refer to this website for future updates as we continue to work to bring you the best continuing education programs. We need to hear from you with regard to content and production. Please feel free to contact the CE Office at [email protected], toll free at 888-373-4873, or contact me personally at [email protected], 317-278-9055. I look forward to working together to make our programs meaningful and interesting.

Welcome

Dean John Williams

3

Dear Colleagues:

Like our profession, the Indiana University School of Dentistry is transforming. In less than a year, our students and faculty will be practicing in the new James J. Fritts, DDS Clinical Care Center, a 45,000-square-foot clinic with 125 state-of-the-art operatories in a modern, glass and steel, light-filled building. It will be a magnificent 21st century complement to the historical limestone façade that flanks this modern clinical center.

We are also transforming our curriculum to be current with digital technology, which is where our students live. We cannot teach 1980s dentistry in a 21st century world. And each year, almost 200 transformed students walk across the stage to collect their hard-earned diplomas. They go from wide-eyed first-year students to oral health care practitioners, ready to serve their communities.

Although we may be seasoned providers, we too must continuously transform and evolve. Advances in research, technology and information challenge us constantly to learn new ways to improve patient care.

IUSD’s Continuing Education Department has produced a stellar collection of courses this year so that our alumni and the Indiana dental community may keep learning and growing as professionals. The wide array of offerings – both in person and online – will take you to the forefront of technological and scientific advances to provide the most current, evidence-based diagnostic, preventive and treatment options to your patients.

Whatever your practice goals are, continuing education at IUSD can play an important role in your professional and personal success. We are transforming dental education, one lifelong student at time.

I look forward to transforming alongside you.

Warm regards,John N. Williams, DMD, MBADeanIndiana University School of Dentistry

Update on Oral Cancer and ItsCommon Imitators AND To Refer orNot to Refer.....That is the Question!

PRESENTED BY DR. PAUL EDWARDS and DR. HARVEY WEINGARTENFriday, February 9, 20188:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. 5 CEUs

We begin this course with a review of the different clinical presentations of oral cancer, placing an emphasis on early recognition. More common conditions that may look similar to early oral squamous cell carcinoma, such as traumatic ulcers, lichen planus, idiopathic leukoplakia, candidiasis and vesiculobullous conditions, will also be reviewed. Clinical features that can be used to differentiate between these conditions will be stressed.

The afternoon session will satisfy your CE requirements for Ethics, Indiana Law and Jurisprudence. Come and join in the discussion as to why we refer or why we don’t refer. After reviewing the Principles of Ethics and the Hierarchy of Treatment, we will consider the ethics as well as the practical issues of referral. You might be surprised as to the basis of why we refer. In addition, we will talk about the changes in the Indiana law satisfying the requirement for Indiana State Licensing.

CENTER FOR IMPLANT, AESTHETIC AND INNOVATIVE DENTISTRY

http://ce.dentistry.iu.edu10

Coming later this year to IU School of Dentistry is the new Center for Implant, Aesthetic and Innovative Dentistry (CIAID), a comprehensive, interdisciplinary clinic for patients with advanced implant and aesthetic needs, providing interdisciplinary, high-tech care in one setting. CIAID will be housed within the remodeled fourth floor clinic and is expected to open in the Fall of 2017. “The Center for Implant, Aesthetic and Innovative Dentistry is a state-of-the-art clinical and didactic facility,” said Dean John Williams. “The center brings together a team of oral health leaders from the fields of prosthodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, general dentistry and research, and will be supported by the latest advanced technology.”

Dr. Dean Morton, CIAID Director, said the center will streamline education and patient management within the pre-doctoral comprehensive care and graduate specialty programs. “We are focused on improving the breadth and quality of care for our traditional patient pool,” said Dr. Morton, who also chairs the IU School of Dentistry’s Prosthodontics Department. “Expanding our ability to provide students and their patients with contemporary implant and aesthetic treatment options, while utilizing the most modern equipment, will position our programs now and well into the future.” Pre-doctoral and post-doctoral dental students will be the primary care providers within the center. Specialists across disciplines will mentor students in a productive and interactive teaching environment, Dr. Morton said. He added that this vertical, interdisciplinary model, pioneered in medicine, is a care delivery system in which the complete spectrum of treatment is provided in one setting. In addition to contemporary, integrated care and teaching, the center faculty will conduct research and provide continuing education training for dentists. Look for information on our website at http://ce.dentistry.iu.edu

Dr. Morton’s IU School of Dentistry colleagues will serve as CIAID co-directors, including, pictured from left: Dr. Waldemar Daut Polido, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Dr. Kamalphob Phasuk, Prosthodontics; Dr. Dean Morton, Prosthodontics; Dr. Michele Kirkup, Comprehensive Care and Innovation; and Dr. Yusuke Hamada, Periodontics.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Lecture and Hands-On Simulation Training CoursePresented by Kyle Kramer, DDS, MSMarch 23, 20188:00 AM - 5:00 PM12 CEUs

This all day seminar on medical emergencies will provide the dentist with the didactic foundations in assessing and managing the common medical emergencies as well as the unique hands-on opportunity to work in a small group in a simulated environment using a high fidelity human simulator. This program was developed to provide a few core presentations after which the participants will be divided into two groups with each group being provided several simulated experiences. This high fidelity simulator provides a “real life” emergency without practicing on a patient. The participant will become immersed in the events as the simulator can mimic a “real” patient in various ways such as: breathing, wheezing, developing upper airway edema, having a palpable pulse, and opening and closing its eyes. As the participants manage each situation, observers will provide debriefings and feedback after which the participants will be provided the opportunity to repeat the scenario management. The participant will also be exposed to different emergency instrumentation and the ability to have a hands-on experience.

At the end of the course, the participant will:1. have an understanding of what emergency equipment and instrumentation is necessary for a dental office2. have an increased familiarity with how to use various emergency equipment and instrumentation for medical

emergency management in the dental office3. have an understanding of how to assess and manage the common emergencies that can happen in the dental

office
