The University of Florida College of Dentistry is working hard to enhance the quality of Continuing Dental Education here at home and abroad. Our flagship program in this effort is the 25 month Comprehensive Dentistry Program. This two year AGD Mastership Track Preparation Course has been offered successfully for 26 years and 311 dentists have completed the program.

As exciting as this exemplary program is, however, it is you, the dental professional, who drives our mission to achieve excellence in the art and science of dentistry. You, as a principle-based, value-driven dental professional, are the key to forging a committed dental community.

In short, this two-year postgraduate course in comprehensive dentistry is designed to provide the general practitioner with an organized and structured educational program of dental sciences in a format that has something to offer everyone. Classes meet one weekend per month on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (with Continental Breakfast included all three days and lunch on Friday & Saturday), and consist of lectures, discussion, in-office projects, and intensive hands-on participation utilizing the College of Dentistry’s state-of-the-art Simulation Lab.

The course curriculum parallels the requirements for Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry. GENERAL INFORMATION J. Hillis Miller Health Center The J. Hillis Miller Health Center at the University of Florida in Gainesville is a modern complex of institutions advancing human health and educating tomorrow’s leaders in the health professions. The Health Center was developed to accommodate the space needs of the College of Dentistry as well as to provide space for the other colleges and the hospital. The College of Dentistry includes the most modern teaching laboratories, lecture areas and a modern comprehensive library. The educational and research programs of the colleges are integrated with the programs of the Gainesville VA Medical Center. The academic programs of the Health Center prepare students, interns, residents, and graduates in the health professions to understand the team involvement in health care, which has proven to contribute more effectively to patient’s well-being. The J. Hillis Miller Health Center, while committed to the preparation of health care professionals, the care of the sick, and the discovery of new health care science is also committed to community service. The colleges engage in community programs that seek innovative approaches to health care delivery and provide instructional continuing education to practitioners. The College of Dentistry The College of Dentistry, the first in the state of Florida, admitted its first 24 students in the fall of 1972. The dental building was completed in the spring of 1975. It includes dental outpatient clinics, postgraduate specialty clinics, seminar rooms, simulation lab, as well as teaching and research laboratories. The College of Dentistry programs are both innovative and state of the art. They reflect the creativity and professional talents of the faculty who are committed to educational processes which are relevant to society’s needs. The primary objective of the College of Dentistry is to develop graduates oriented to the biological sciences; sensitivity to the needs of others; skillful in all preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; and appreciative of new knowledge through research activities. The Florida Academy of General Dentistry The Florida Academy of General Dentistry is a constituent of the Academy of General Dentistry. Their goals, like those of the national academy are fourfold: to promote quality continuing dental education for general practitioners; to maintain an accrediting agency for continuing dental education courses; to provide recognition for practitioners having completed rigorous continuing education courses; and finally to assist in improving the dental health of the nation through its educational and legislative efforts. Membership in the Florida Academy is voluntary and participation in the Florida Academy activities greatly helps to serve the organizational objectives as well as legislative efforts that have impact on the dental care provided in the state.

ADMISSION INFORMATION

Requirements For Enrollment

The College of Dentistry reserves the right to accept only qualified applicants for this postdoctoral program. Each prospective candidate must submit a formal application. Candidates must be currently practicing dentistry or hold a teaching appointment, since some of the courses will require patient care. If a candidate is absent from one or more subcourses in a major course he may take the subcourse the next time it is offered without penalty and at the current rate at time of attendance. The University of Florida and the Academy of General Dentistry require that credit be awarded only for those hours in attendance or assignments completed. If a candidate has completed only a part of a major course he/she will have a period of three years to complete the component subject area. After that time the entire major course must be retaken and full fees paid. All course work is presented in English only.

Application And Fees

Each Candidate must submit a formal application to the College of Dentistry for acceptance into the program. That application must be approved by the Comprehensive Dentistry Director before the candidate is permitted to enroll in the Comprehensive Dentistry Program.

The tuition for the two year Comprehensive Dentistry Program (600 contact hours) is $19,875.00. Candidates are required to furnish their own instruments, supplies and textbooks for each course.

The breakdown of tuition cost is approximately $33.13 per clock hour.

Payment of fees may be handled in one of two ways. The full tuition may be paid in advance, or an initial fee of $2,500.00 is due upon acceptance of the application, followed by twenty-five interest free consecutive monthly payments of $695.00 each.

Student Academic Regulations

Withdrawal From And Reentry Into Comprehensive Dentistry Certificate Program

Registered postdoctoral students may request a break in the program and be reinstated within three years without loss of accumulated credit provided that all fees are paid and the student is reregistered with the Comprehensive Dentistry Program. Fees per weekend session will be assessed at current rate at time of re-entry.

Graduation

Postdoctural students completing the prescribed course of study, upon recommendation of the program director, will be granted a Certificate of Completion of the Comprehensive Dentistry Program by the University of Florida College of Dentistry.

INDIVIDUAL COURSES PRESENTED IN THE COMPREHENSIVE DENTISTRY PROGRAM Basic Science 12 Hours This course will include an update in pharmacology as applied to dentistry. The impact of many systemic medications on the practice of dentistry will be reviewed. In addition a review of control of infections will be covered as well as the techniques to understand the etiology of caries and periodontal diseases. Fluoride and other caries preventive measures such as strep mutans substitution will be covered. Endodontics 46 Hours This course is divided into surgical and non-surgical endodontic procedures. The first session will emphasize rotary cleaning and shaping, thermoplastic obturation, and working length determination. A laboratory session on access, rotary cleaning and shaping as well as thermoplastic obturation is included. The surgical aspect will cover apicoectomy procedures, root amputation and other surgical techniques that enhance endodontic therapy. Esthetics 46 Hours Esthetic dentistry is presented in its many faceted areas from simple operative dentistry through complex prosthodontic and orthodontic cases. There will be a review of all ceramic restorations and esthetic implant restorations. The principle concepts of esthetic restorative procedures will be highlighted throughout the course. Implants 46 Hours This course will cover the use, selection, and alternatives in implant dentistry. The implant template design will be stressed. Discussions and cases will be presented for both partially and completely edentulous patients. Types of complete denture support systems will be discussed and presented. The rationale for immediate placement and load techniques will be scientifically discussed. Impressions and laboratory techniques and requirements will be covered. Operative Dentistry 46 Hours This participation course involves two complete weekends and the first section is devoted to adhesive dentistry’s latest developments, esthetic procedures, direct posterior composites, and etiology of tooth wear and treatment options. The second seminar will include cast restorations, indirect composites and porcelain restorations. Oral Medicine/Oral Diagnosis 12 Hours This course includes a through review of important oral pathology. Local and systematic disease processes affecting the head and neck region will be presented in a case based format to engage the participant in active learning. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing, diagnosing and treating oral pathosis.

Oral Surgery 46 Hours This two part course begins with a thorough health status evaluation followed by management of medical emergencies. Both complicated and complex exodontia is covered with a thorough instruction in third molar and other impaction management. The surgeons present pre-prosthodontic surgical techniques to facilitate the success of prosthodontic restorations. Treatment of infections and medico-legal considerations are presented. Many cases are presented to explain the principles taught. Orthodontics 12 Hours The orthodontic section of this comprehensive dentistry course will include the all important timing of orthodontics care to provide maximum desirable results. Early treatment is desired between ages six and twelve. Adolescent orthodontics will be presented separately as well as adult orthodontics. The course will include surgical modalities available and craniomandibular concerns. Pediatric Dentistry 12 Hours The pediatric dentistry course covers periodontal diseases in children and management of dental trauma and odontogenic infections. The restorative section begins with behavior management, pediatric pain control and continues with restorative procedures for the pediatric patient, space management and pulp therapy. A laboratory experience completes the course. Periodontics 46 Hours This course is usually divided between non-surgical and surgical treatment of periodontal diseases and defects. The first non-surgical section covers the etiology of periodontal diseases relating it to risk factors. In addition the team concept of periodontal treatment is introduced with the emphasis on adequate data collection and treatment planning. Periodontal debridement and adjunctive care will be covered. In the second session surgical management and techniques for treatment of diseases and defects will be taught as well as proper patient selection for surgical therapy. Practice Management 24 Hours Promotion of the individual practice is necessary in today’s competitive society. This course will stress personnel techniques designed to enhance the staff’s ability to promote the practice. The techniques of professional marketing will be covered and shown how they can be applied to an individual dental practice. Much emphasis will be placed on training the dentist to make the most favorable impression on patients. This course is designed to maximize office productivity while minimizing stress.

Fixed Prosthodontics 46 Hours This two part participation course is designed to review the principles of diagnosis and treatment planning, treatment position, anterior guidance, esthetic principles and current restorative materials. Predictable ceramic restoration fabrication will be taught as well as special restoration of endodontically treated teeth and implant supported fixed prosthesis. Concepts explored in this course will include traditional periodontal prosthesis, diagnosis and treatment of a debilitated dentition and preservation of the complete dentition. Removable Prosthodontics 46 Hours This two part course is divided into partial and complete removable prosthodontics. In the partial removable section subjects covered include treatment alternatives, minibases, claps designs, jaw relationship records, altered cast procedures and impressions for implant supported removable partial dentures. The complete denture section will include accurate impression techniques, tissue preparation, esthetics and phonetic considerations, accurate intermaxillary registration and case management. Special Patient Care 12 Hours This course is primarily geared to help the practitioner understand the needs and special treatment required for geriatric patients as well as those that are medically compromised. The influences on the dentition and oral cavity of certain therapeutic regimens for special diseases will be discussed and cases presented. TMD/Occlusion 46 Hours This participation course is provided in two weekend sections. The first course covers a complete examination technique for facial pain, functional anatomy of the temporomandibular joint, differential diagnosis of facial pain and sleep disturbance. The second weekend section is devoted to occlusal analysis and modification as well as indication for splints and their fabrication.
