Bible Reading: Luke 2:1-20; Eph. 3:14-21; Psalm 119:41-48; 1 Kings 9-10
Christianity is not an outside religion of external behav-iors. Surely we are called to strive, to do, to act, to speak,to behave in certain ways. And yet, it is not primarilyabout these externals at all. The creed of Christ and hisdisciples is a creed of the heart, a devotion of internal
transformation. This is why Paul prays that “the eyes ofour heart would be enlightened” and commands that webe “transformed by the renewing of our minds.” This iswhy Jesus warned the Pharisees, “Hypocrites! You honorme with your lips, but your hearts are far from me.” Thisis why God told Samuel, “God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lordlooks at the heart.” In all of our striving, acting, speakingand behaving, let us be sure that these externals areflowing from the internals which catch God’s eye. Let usbe sure our lips are speaking from our heart, and let usbe sure that our transformation is an internal one.
For further study, read Eph 1, 2 Cor 3:18, Romans 12:2,and 1 Sam 16:7
Bible Reading: Luke 2:21-40; Eph. 4:1-16; Psalm 119:49-56; 1 Kings 11
2 Tim 1:2 “To Timothy, my beloved child.” There is andthere ought to be a depth to Christian relationships. It hasbeen said that “relationships are the currency of God’skingdom.” When Paul wrote his letters to Timothy, therewas a glowing warmth, even in the greeting. Paul closes 2Timothy, “All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet
those who love us in the faith.” When Paul said goodbye inActs 20, they prayed and cried, hugged and kissed, weresad and followed him all the way to the ship. Relationshipswithin the church are not a surface “hello” and “goodbye”kind of relationship. We are well pleased to share our verysouls with one another. Because we have been broughttogether with one hope by one Spirit sharing the samefaith and the same Father and looking together to thesame Savior, our relationships with other believers are oneof the most critical elements of our life. They are not onlythe seasoning that brings a depth of flavor to our lives, butwe become for one another the very wings upon whichwe elevate our flight of spiritual maturity.
Read Eph 4:1-16 and ask yourself: What am I doing to culti-vate my relationships with other believers?
Bible Reading: Luke 1:57-66; Eph. 2:11-22; Psalm 119:25-32; 1 Kings 6-7
In yesterday’s passage (John 5:30-47) Jesus criticized theJews for failing to see Him in the Scriptures. Searchingthe Scriptures isn’t about knowledge alone. Searchingthe Scriptures is about knowledge leading to devotion toChrist. Today and tomorrow we will list some application
questions to apply in your personal Bible reading. Thegoals of these questions are to draw your heart into aproper worshipful response to God who is revealed in theScriptures.
1. What is the text asking me to believe about God and my-self, sin and salvation, the world and the world to come?2. What sin is this verse forbidding? What duty is this versecommanding?3. What grace, fruit, or gift of the is this passage callingfor?
Bible Reading: Luke 1:67-80; Eph. 3:1-13; Psalm 119:33-40; 1 Kings 8
4. How should this verse impact my relationships God, myfamily, my friends, my neighbors, my enemies?5. Is this passage addressed to believers, un believers, hypo-crites, doubters, etc.?6. What does this teach me about my responsibilities as achurch member, a citizen, an employee?7. Is there an example here I’m being urged to avoid or follow?8. What is there in this verse to draw me to worship?9. Does this text admonish, rebuke, convict, or warn me? Howand why?10. Does it encourage, comfort, console, or promise me? Howand why?11. What is the verse asking me to question and examine?12. Does this verse ask me to look at the past, the present, orthe future?13. Is this verse addressing my mind, my emotions, my will, mydesires, or my conscience?14. Is this verse focused on me as an individual or upon the
body of Christ, His church?15. What is this verse intended to change in me, my family, mychurch, my workplace, my world?
