4 Easy Ways to Order
Twenty-five years ago, Douglas Eagleson, President of Kona Bay Fabrics, found himself making the unplanned leap from Kona Bay Coffee Estates, which he had founded three years earlier, into the quilting industry. The adventure that followed has brought Kona Bay Fabrics to 2016—a year filled with plans for fun silver jubilee events and opportunities. The Early Days
Eagleson had developed close connections with trading companies in Japan as he built his coffee exporting business. By the late 1980’s, Japan was in a mode of rapid expansion and investment in foreign trade. Japanese trading companies saw an opportunity in the burgeoning quilt industry in the United States which had been gaining momentum ever since the Bicentennial. Japanese textile mills were investing and modernizing their equipment.
Eagleson’s coffee trading connections suggested he accompany them on an exploratory trip to a textile trade show on the west coast in the spring of 1991. He went and that is where the Kona Bay Fabrics story begins.
Within weeks of that trip, an enlightened Eagleson had established Kona Bay Fabrics. He purchased a booth and planned to attend the upcoming International Quilt Market in Houston. While still continuing to focus on his coffee business, he was interested in seeing if textiles held promise.
That fall, Eagleson traveled to Houston with sample fabric provided by the trading company. The Kona Bay Fabrics booth consisted of ten bolts of cotton sateens with Asian designs and it’s owner and sole representative, Douglas Eagleson. The response
Kona Bay Fabrics Reflecting on History While Celebrating the Future
was overwhelming. He smiles with fond recollection when he talks about the kindness extended to him at the show and the friends who were made.
Leaving Quilt Market with a thick batch of orders in hand and a batch of newly acquired sales reps, Eagleson was excited about the future and where the quilt industry was headed. At the Forefront of Innovation
Kona Bay Fabrics quickly gained a strong foothold in the quilting marketplace by pioneering the creation of Asian quilting designs. The company went unrivaled for many years, establishing a reputation as the go-to group for high quality fabric with exquisite Asian designs.
Today, though still known for their unique Asian designs, Kona Bay’s extensive range of tone-on-tones holds a notable percentage of marketplace share.
Since the beginning, they have worked with Japanese artists schooled in creating hand-painted textile art. The depth and subtleties that can be achieved in the most simple designs are apparent even in Kona Bay’s Tone-It-Up offerings.~continued

In 2003, Kona Bay Fabrics added publishing to their repertoire with the launch of Asian Fabric, a well-received subscription based print magazine designed to offer Kona Bay fans patterns designed specifically to complement and showcase their Asian fabric purchases.
After seven years, the company decided to join the digital age and make the magazine available for free. It was a good move. Over the last several years, the magazine has been viewed and used by millions around the globe. Issues, which also include travel and food features, can be downloaded at www.issuu.com/konabayfabrics.
The magazine underwent a name change to Fabric Vine, recently. Over time, the magazine had become so much more with patterns to support Kona Bay’s considerable tone-on-tone offerings. In addition, last year, Eagleson, whose company is based in Washington state, launched WineFromWashington.com and released his own wine label, Trellis Gate. Fabric Vine now also includes fun articles such as a look at the different styles of Chardonnay wine and how to decide which one to buy, scheduled in the upcoming issue. Celebrating Twenty-five Years In Business
“I feel truly blessed to have enjoyed twenty-five years of success in the quilting industry,” commented Eagleson, “Now, it’s our job to make sure we do our part to support an ever-changing economy and industry in the next twenty-five years.”
Eagleson is flying high and steady as the company’s social media maven. You can find him hanging out on Facebook everyday asking for opinions on possible new collections, talking about his cat or passing along found wisdom. It’s rare in this day and age to have a company President so available.
In response to the back to basics trend in the industry, Kona Bay Fabrics has released their first four precut 2 1/2” strip bundles. Wanting to keep the price point affordable and the selection the best,
each bundle features 20 pieces in 20 different designs in specific color ranges, making it easy for you to mix and match. The bundles sample from an assortment of Tone-It-Up skus. According to Eagleson, the reception has been remarkable and they are already working on the next batch. Color Movement, one of Kona Bay’s longest running and most popular basics (and the
first featured group of your club membership) is one of the first four offered. Novel Neutrals, Lovable Lights and Beautiful Blues round out the group.
The celebration year was also a good time to explore digital printing. Kona Bay Fabric’s first foray is named Koi Gathering. The koi motif has always been one of their most requested so it seemed like a fitting choice for their first dive into the digital
printing pool. Koi Gathering has made a splash so watch for more digital offerings in their future.Last But Not Least
Perhaps the most exciting news from Kona Bay Fabrics is, of course, the creation of the Kona Bay Fabrics Fabulously Fun Fabric Club. The Club is the culmination of all Kona Bay Fabrics’ many skill sets. Eagleson shared that it is also their way of addressing the e-commerce trend. “The fact that more and more shops are offering online shopping for the convenience of their customers means quilters and sewing enthusiasts will not always have the opportunity to
see fabric in person before they plan their projects.” says Eagleson. “Our Fabric Club gives quilters the chance to receive samples quarterly for an up close view of color and quality.”
In addition to your fabric samples, you will also receive a monthly e-Journal filled with Club only patterns, technique tips, book and products reviews and opportunities to win fun giveaways. As the rest of the year unfolds, watch for more exciting surprises and announcements as Kona Bay celebrates twenty-five spectacular years in business.
