Each year Bristol celebrates heroes and heroines for their selfless work with and for others in the community by presenting them with a Lord Mayor Medal.

This year Bristol recognised the work of young people with a new under 25 category.

Jade, a Peer Educator in our Upfront project was nominated for her tireless voluntary work.

Jade has been delivering of our peer education programme since last summer – planning and delivering sessions to groups of young people

aged 14-17 across schools, colleges and youth settings in Bristol.

The aim of the project is to give young people a safe space to talk about and dispel myths about homelessness. Peer educators also encourage young people who might be at risk to get support and advice from the services offered in Bristol.

The Lord Mayor Councillor Peter Main said‘the new Lord Mayor Youth Medal is the city’s official ‘thank you’ to Bristol’s unsung heroes and heroines and goes some way to making sure they get their well earned moment in the city’s spotlight’.

BIGDIPAbout 4 months ago Kennedy and Ben decided to try their hand at catering on a BIG scale.

Earlier this year David Morgan, entrepeu-ner and ex-1625ip Board Member teamed up with local business Jame’s Food to help some young people gain business experience in the catering trade.

Two young men, Ben and Kennedy decided to give it a go. Jame’s Food sells dips like hummous and harrisa at markets. Ben and Kennedy are learning everything they need to know about food production, storage, pricing, selling and they are soon going to start looking into how to run a business.

This is what they’ve thought so far..

It was quite difficult at first but as it’s gone on it’s got easier. We’ve learned at lot of stuff! How to do prepping and get organised. We’ve learned a lot of Health and Safety and Food Hygiene Aware-ness.

David is really good - he’s easy to get on with and has a lot of experi-ence to offer, he’s been working in the industry for years. He’s like our mentor.But we can have a laugh with him and he never bosses us around! He’s always telling us business stuff and about courses - he’s a great source for contacts. He’s put us in touch with the Fredericks Foundation that helps disad-vantaged people set up/expand their own business to achieve finan-cial independence and Brave, an organisation that helps start-ups.

Both said that if it wasn’t for this they would be looking for jobs and the rest of the time “nothing interesting” and “sitting on my back-side”.

David says...”They have shown real commitment for no pay. They now run our operation, not me, I am the passenger! And their pot-washer-in-chief! I think it makes them very employable. It just shows, give someone half a chance, and there is no stopping them.

The Involvement Programme runs twice a year - next sign up is September - speak to your support worker about getting ready for it.

Here are some of the things the young people who came to the last Involvement Programme said they felt they had gained or achieved.Some of them may seem quite simple and some are massive.Well done to the Spring 2013 Crew! All have gone on to either enrol in a course or find work.

1. Put milk, f lour and half the butter into a saucepan and whisk continuously over a medium heat, until the butter has melted and the sauce has thickened. Leave to simmer over a very low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occa-sionally. Season well 2. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/400°F/gas 6.

3. Slice the chicken into chunks and fry in butter till cooked.

4. Melt the remaining butter in a frying pan and fry the leeks, onion and garlic.

5. Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling salted water according to packet instruc-tions, then drain.

6. When the leeks are ready, place the sauce, chicken, pasta and leeks in a large bowl and stir thoroughly.

7. Spoon the mixture into a shallow ovenproof dish. Mix together breadcrumbs and cheese and sprinkle over the top.

8. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and crusty on top.

9. EAT.
