A prevention program set up to help combat increases in human trafficking is looking for financial help in order to continue supporting troubled girls as young as 11. The volunteer program called Girls At Risk, has operated out of Mill-Courtland Community Centre since last year. Created and organized on their own time by three regional police employees, the project combines mentoring and athletics to help support about a dozen troubled Kitchener girls between the ages of 11 and 15. One of the program organizers is a regional police officer who has experience working in areas of street prostitution and human trafficking. The project, supported by parents, social workers, police and volunteers is now looking for financial help from regional school boards, Kitchener council and others so that organizers can afford to continue to provide the girls with running shoes, gym bags and other basic athletic supplies. Because of a cash shortage, program operators are occasionally paying for supplies out of their own pockets. Since it started, Girls At Risk has worked with Planned Parenthood and organized several educational forums on how we can rescue victims and help prevent human trafficking. It’s a program well worth supporting. Contact me about any subject at 519.741.2798, or email [email protected]. Sincerely, Frank Etherington Councillor—Ward 9

NEED ASSISTANCE?

NEED ASSISTANCE?

Do you sometimes have difficulty getting what you need for your family? Would your family benefit from resources for food and clothing? Would you like your child to be involved in sports, art, dance or other programs but the cost is not within your budget?

The Family Outreach Worker may be able to assist with these issues, as well as possible subsidy and assistance for adult education, child care, back-to-work costs, transportation, and counselling. We can also make referrals to some great community programs you may not be aware of. If you would like any more information about this program or would like to discuss some of these issues, please call Kristen at 519.743.8530. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you!

*Please note that the Outreach program is for families whose income is at or close to the low-income cut off (LICO) and who have children 17 and under living at home. Due to the part-time nature of this position, Outreach is not an emergency service.

NEW & UPCOMING PROGRAMS

NEIGHBOURHOOD NOTICE The Schneider Creek Neighbourhood Group is a group of residents in the Schneider Creek neighbourhood (the area between Queen, Courtland, Schneider Creek, and Madison). We get together when issues arise, when we plan neighbourhood activities, and to look for ways to make our Neighbourhood great! There are now several opportunities to get involved:

Sign up to our Google+ page - https://goo.gl/cgVKmU - to participate in the conversation and to receive all the invitations to meetings and events. This page is where one can find out what is going on and to find the means to get a shoe in the door of the activities listed below!

Join us for meetings where we discuss how we can participate in municipal decisions regarding the future of our neighbourhood. Lately we have been meeting about the City of Kitchener's PARTS (Planning Around Rapid Transit Stations) and the proposed development for Queen Street South and Benton Streets.

Join the group that is organizing the 2nd Annual Schneider Creek Porch Party, to be held on July 23rd - save the date! (get in touch here: http://scporchparty.weebly.com/contact.html)

Join the group that will be organizing the Summer Neighbourhood Barbecue and Potluck

Take a look at the document that we prepared that outlines what we value in our neighbourhood "Making Our Neighbourhood Great!" available on our Google+ page and in the Little Libraries at 17 Whitney Place and at the Queen's Greens Community Garden at Mitchell and Queen St. South.

Come on out to enjoy all the activities that happen throughout the year, and meet your neighbours. We look forward to meeting you!
