We nurture each camper’s individual creativity. Located in Napa, California, The Oxbow School offers a unique art-immersion camp program for teens. Each summer we bring together an inspiring group of artists who are passionate teachers, learners, and creators. We build a safe, open-minded community in which all participants can deeply engage in the studios and activities. Our program supports campers in discovering and developing their art practice and sense of self. We believe there is no limit to what teens can create given an environment of high-level instruction and support. No portfolios or previous art training are required—just the desire to dive in and see what happens!

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Art is many things, take your pick. Our program emphasizes the exploration of campers’ talents, inside and outside of the studio. There are many different ways to ignite creativity, which is why we offer campers exposure to many different mediums, techniques, and approaches to making art. Campers return home with concrete evidence of their personal growth.

“I have become more open and less worried of what others will think of me. In other words, it didn’t feel like high school—it was ten times better!”

“The Oxbow community was amazing! I love it here. I found new interest in mediums I’ve never tried before and now really consider myself an artist in the making.”

“I didn’t just feel as though I was there, but I felt like I was part of everything.”

Fundamentals and beyond! Based on Oxbow’s semester model, the camp program is focused on creating project-based art. The first week, campers learn a variety of techniques and explore their conceptual ideas. The second week, studio time is devoted to a personal project. Campers select a topic, their medium of choice, and work closely with staff to bring the idea to fruition. They engage all steps of the artistic process, from idea to creation, critique, and exhibition.

“I feel more comfortable in my own skin and being myself as an artist...My experience was completely eye-opening, fun, different, and life changing. The sense of community and acceptance is like no other experience that I have had. I have definitely grown into a more open-minded person with wider horizons.”

Inspiration on the bank of the river.Oxbow’s campus is located in a residential neighborhood along the Napa River. It includes dormitories, studios, a dining hall, recreational space, and an organic garden. Overlooking the river, with roll-up glass walls, each studio provides state-of-the-art working facilities that are virtually outdoors.

A day in the artful life.We value a balance of commitment and play in all aspects of our program. We create an environment where campers enjoy being away from home, explore their independence, and make new friends. Each day, campers mix studio time with participation in activities like Inspiration Evenings, skit nights, campfires, yoga, outdoor films, Art Olympics, and visits to Bay Area galleries.
