The immediate area offers two premium golf courses, several state parks, several small lakes, and an abundance of trails for hiking, biking, ATV use, and horseback riding. There are also several historic sites to visit such as Montezuma’s Castle, Montezuma’s Well, Tuzigoot, and Fort Verde State Historic Park. Early inhabitants, the Hohokam and Sinagua followed by the Apaches, Yavapai Tribes, and settlers of European descent, have left a rich heritage which has enhanced the appeal of the valley. Another attraction is the Verde Canyon Railway in Clarkdale, which takes visitors on a scenic train ride through history and through beautiful areas that cannot be seen by automobile.

The early growth of the Verde Valley centered on agriculture and mining. Today the economic foundation consists mainly of manufacturing, retail, recreation, tourism, and retirement related industries. An influx of retirees also attracts and expands the core services they require, which includes real estate, financial, legal, investment planning, and of course health care.

The Verde Valley’s high quality of life continues to attract people from all walks of life, thus creating a continuous demand for housing. Several master-planned communities are under development in Cottonwood, Camp Verde, and Clarkdale and its immediate environs. A large variety of house models and price ranges are available. Some planned communities include a golf course, pool, and clubhouse. A great deal of thought, planning, and governmental approval has gone into each of these projects, insuring high quality development for the community.

In the heart of Arizona, encompassing about 714 square miles amidst a beautiful and rich historic area, lies the lovely Verde Valley. The Verde River winds its way through the valley communities and provides a variety of recreational activities. Fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, and wildlife watching are just some of the activities to be enjoyed. About 80% of the nearby area is National Forest land.

The oldest town in the Verde Valley, Camp Verde, was established in 1865 and the town incorporated in 1986. The town is located at the geographic center of the state of Arizona at an elevation of about 3,160 feet. ClarkdaleClarkdale is located at the upper end of the Verde Valley in Yavapai County, approximately 110 miles north of Phoenix and south of the Grand Canyon at an elevation of

about 3,540 feet. Topography of the area is characterized by numerous mesas and buttes along the rise from the Verde River on the east, at about 3,300 feet, to the Mingus Mountains on the west, at about 7,000 feet.

Clarkdale originally developed as a service center for the mining area nearby. The growing population of this area spurred the housing and construction industries, which promoted active retail and service sectors within a few miles of the community.

The town of Clarkdale, Arizona is still a growing community and is considered the gateway to the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area in the beautiful Verde Valley.

Originally founded in 1912, Clarkdale is renowned as the first master planned community in the State of Arizona. Known as a true “company town”, Clarkdale was initially founded by the United Verde Copper Company to provide housing and services for the employees of the copper smelter. The extensive smelter complex was located near the Verde River and processed the copper ore that was produced from the mines in Jerome for about 40 years, from the period of about 1913-1953.

Unlike other company towns of the period that grew without much detailed planning, Clarkdale was designed and built from a carefully crafted, unified master plan. The main town site was located on a ridge overlooking the industrial smelter complex and was developed with residential housing for various income levels, a commercial zone, an administrative center, schools, parks and recreational areas, and cultural facilities. The town planners intended to include all the parts typically found in a small town within a comprehensive design plan. Today, the original town site of Clarkdale is recognized as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Clarkdale still remains as a good model of urban planning today. The original rail line that served the smelter is now used as a scenic excursion train, the Verde Canyon Railroad, which provides sightseers a four-hour round trip of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area and Verde River. In addition to the excursion branch, the Arizona Central Railroad (the parent company of the Verde Canyon Railroad) ships materials by rail to Salt River Materials Group, a local cement manufacturer.

Clarkdale’s historic Downtown Business District possesses many treasured historic buildings and serves as the heart of Clarkdale’s government, cultural, and historic core. The Town of Clarkdale, with the local business owners in the downtown area, has supported improvements over the years to keep the downtown district thriving. The Downtown Business District includes a variety of businesses, such as restaurants, taverns, a service station, art gallery, light manufacturing facilities, and some internet based businesses. The Clarkdale Historical Society and Museum is also located in the downtown district.

Salt River Materials Group The Phoenix Cement Company, headquartered in Phoenix, operates a cement plant in Clarkdale. Originally built in 1959 by the American Cement Company to make cement for construction of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, the Clarkdale plant produces Portland cement, fly ash,

and gypsum for a regional market.

While Phoenix Cement has always kept its name, it has changed owner-ship a few times over the years. From 1971 to 1979, the company was a division of Amcord, a large producer of cement, coal, and other construction materials. In 1979, Gifford-Hill purchased the company and operated it within its family of cement plants. In 1987, Phoenix Cement was purchased by its current owners, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

Over the five-plus decades of Phoenix Cement’s existence, it has undergone many changes. Upgrades in almost every phase of the cement operation have led to great improvements in quality, production, and safety. In 1999, Phoenix Cement’s Clarkdale plant was rated as the safest cement plant in North America, with almost 8 years no lost-time, accident free operation. The fly ash operation, with multiple sources and distribution points, has become an increasingly large complement to the cement business. The Verde Gypsum Mine was purchased in 1998, giving Phoenix Cement an assured, local source of raw material.

Clarkdale’s location makes the varied scenic, historic, and recreational areas of the Verde Valley and north central Arizona easily accessible. Historic Main-Town Clarkdale preserves its “model town” look and an ambiance perfect for walking tours. A free map for a walking tour of historic Clarkdale, which includes buildings constructed in the 1920’s by the mining company that founded the town, is available at the Clark Memorial Library at 39 N. 9th Street. There is also a wealth of information at the Clarkdale Historical Society and Museum located at 900 First North Street, call (928) 649-1198 for more info.

Clarkdale is considered a Centennial Town since it was founded in 1912, the same year that Arizona became a state. It is known as one of the first master planned communities in Arizona.

Efforts to preserve the model town features of the community while meeting new challenges include a downtown revitalization program that in 1997-98 enlisted students from the University of Arizona’s Landscape Architecture School. Among their recommendations was a tree-shaded traffic circulation pattern for Main Street. A Clarkdale Strategic Plan for Economic Development, published in November 1995, describes ways in which Clarkdale is expanding its residential and economic base, as well as its goals for manageable tourism.

The Town of Clarkdale, in February 1999, received a $500,000 grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation for beautification and enhancement of its historic downtown area. The grant permitted construction of wider sidewalks, planting of trees, and other landscaping features.

The Town of Clarkdale is also the home of the Made In Clarkdale Art Show, which started in 1986. Made In Clarkdale became a non-profit arts organization in 2012. Today it has over 40 artists who participate in Made In Clarkdale sponsored events and projects. In addition to the annual Made In Clarkdale Art Show, they offer the artists the opportunities to show their art work year round through special art exhibits or events in the Verde Valley, and through our Art in Public Spaces program. In 2016, Made In

Cultural Attractions

Cultural attractions in the Verde Valley area include the arts, history, ethnic cultures, recreation, community events, and education.

Old Town Cottonwood This historic five block strip along Route 89A (also known as Main Street) maintains much of the atmosphere of the early part of this century, when most of the buildings in the area were built. It offers a variety of interesting shops, many locally owned, which offer items from antiques and clothing to wine tasting and a nice selection of restaurants. The two-story, brick Willard House, built on Main Street around 1890 by an early settler, is the town’s oldest known house. The Old Town Center for the Arts is one of the best theaters for live music, comedy, and other entertainment.

Montezuma’s Castle, a spectacular look at ancient cliff dwellings, is a National Monument operated by the National Park Service. The Visitor’s Center has amazing exhibits teaching about life in the Verde Valley area hundreds of years ago with many artifacts on display. Montezuma’s Well is nearby and charges no fee to see the canals and well established hundreds of years ago. (928) 567-3322

The Fort Verde State Park Museum in Camp Verde contains military artifacts, Indian relics, and other items used by the settlers and Indians. Camp Verde typically celebrates Fort Verde Days in October with living history presentations, a vintage baseball game, special presentations, cavalry drills, plus more, and offers a glimpse into the area’s past.

The Clemenceau Heritage Museum in Cottonwood opened in 1991 and is maintained and operated by the volunteers from the Verde Historical Society. The Clemenceau Heritage museum seeks to preserve and display the artifacts and heritage of the Verde Valley area. The Museum normally offers displays of a schoolroom, early 20th century home interiors, and artifacts and photographs that reflect the earlier days of mining, ranching, and farming; areas that drove the economy of the Verde Valley since the arrival of white settlers in the second half of the 19th century. The museum also features an Arizona Centennial exhibit which depicts life about 100 years ago in Arizona, when electricity and telephones were still fairly new. You can also visit “Between Fences” - a special 2008 exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute. Admission to the museum is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. The

museum is located at 1 N. Willard, at the northeast corner or Mingus Ave. and Willard St.

Verde River Days is one of the most anticipated and favorite annual events of Cottonwood’s residents. The event began in September of 1988 as an attempt to develop an awareness of the Verde River as a valuable resource and to gather support for the protection of the Verde River and its riparian habitat. This family-oriented, unique event has proven a huge success and may be the only one of its kind in the whole state. The day’s events typically include a climbing wall, organized canoe and kayak rides, sand castle building, and nature-based exhibits. Guests of all ages are also welcome to fish in the lagoon that is loaded with hundreds of pounds of catfish. Poles, bait, and tackle are provided for all ages and no fishing license is needed. There will also be a wide range of entertainment available throughout the day. Enjoy a hearty pancake breakfast. Non-Profit food vendors will be cooking up Indian Fry bread, hot dogs, and hamburgers for nominal fees. For more information about Verde River Day, call (928) 634-5283. Come out and enjoy the fun!!

Wineries & Vineyards

OAK CREEK VINEYARD The Oak Creek Vineyard & Winery has been serving up fantastic area wines since 2002. We also offer a great selection of wine-related merchandise in Arizona. Enjoy a wonderful selection of wines, cheeses, salami, and olives while relaxing in our newly remodeled wine tasting room, which is now open daily, 10am-6pm.

It’s claimed that “good wine grows on gentle slopes with a river nearby.” That’s why the vineyard was located here on Page Springs Road, close to beautiful Sedona, and across from Oak Creek.

Though we have expanded more each year, currently we have about 4,000 vines placed on just over ten acres at the vineyard located in Arizona’s Verde Valley. In the higher elevations of the property, Syrah, Merlot, and

Tempranillo grapes are grown, while the lower portion is typically reserved for Zinfandel and Chardonnay. The intense sunshine of the Verde Valley in Arizona helps the grapes achieve the desired sugar content, while the cool nights and warm days create an excellent environment for our different wine varietals. The volcanically enriched soil of the desert also enhances the stock to create a one-of-a-kind flavor, unique only to this region, resulting in full bodied flavorful reds and crisp, clean whites.

Located at 1555 Page Springs Rd. in Cornville, Arizona 86325. Call us at (928) 649-0290 for additional information.

ALCANTARA VINEYARDS Alcantara Vineyards is one of the largest vineyards located in North Central Arizona. Located at 3445 S. Grapevine Way in Cottonwood, we allow winery tours and hold wine tasting’s from a selection of our excellent red and white wines.

Alcantara Vineyards is an incredible adventure designed to fulfill the dream of developing a vineyard community and associated winery. Through cultivating the vineyards and embracing the land, we soon realized there was a bigger picture in this hidden treasure along the confluence of two rivers. Alcantara Vineyards now maintains over 13,000 vines and offers 12 different wine varieties. While you sip our wine and enjoy our peaceful surroundings, which include vineyards, a grass picnic area, the Verde River, and bald eagles flying overhead, you’ll find you are indeed a part of our community and family.

Located at 3445 S. Grapevine Way in Cottonwood, AZ. Call us at (928) 649-8463 for additional information.

PAGE SPRING CELLARS VINEYARDS & WINERY Page Spring Cellars is a family owned vineyard and winery that produces fine Arizona Wines tucked into the Verde Valley landscape overlooking the pristine Oak Creek. Page Springs

Cellars winery offers excellent Rhône style wines, gourmet food selections, and beautiful views.

Come visit our tasting room located about 15-20 minutes south of Sedona, and experience a true taste of Arizona. Whether you are a novice or aficionado to wine experiences, our knowledgeable staff can recommend tasting flights from our extensive wine menu to delight your palate.

You can also enjoy our scenic deck near the cooling waters of Oak Creek, and catch a glimpse of some of our local wildlife: herons, hawks, bald eagles, ducks, hummingbirds, raccoons, river otters, and javelinas. For the ultimate in relaxation, or for car-weary muscles, enjoy a chair or table massage at the vineyard. You can also shop here for local crafts and artwork, t-shirts, or ask us to pack a picnic basket for you!!

JAVELINA LEAP Javelina Leap is a family operated, premium boutique winery that produces international award winning wines. Our winery is located in northern Arizona’s Verde Valley area, only a few minutes away from Sedona in the small, but lovely valley of Page Springs.

At the winery, Javelina Leap processes about 60 tons of Arizona grown grapes, which converts to about 3000 cases of fine Javelina Leap wine. History

Archaeologists estimate that humans have inhabited the Verde Valley for about 11,000 years. The earliest inhabitants were probably Indians. A skillful farming people, the Hohokam moved into the Valley around 600 A.D. They were well-versed in irrigation procedures. The Sinagua were pit house dwellers and farmers who moved into the Valley around 1125. The villages at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot reached their present size in the 1300’s and were abandoned in the early 1400’s by the Sinagua. The Yavapai occupied the Valley when Captain Antonio de Espejo and his band of Spanish conquistadors took possession of “great riches” in the Verde Valley in 1583.

Military occupation of the Verde Valley began in 1865 to protect settlers farming along the Verde River – West Creek junction, about five miles south of Camp Verde. Mining and farming disrupted the lives of the Tonto Apache and the Yavapai. The late 1860’s and early 1870’s saw major conflicts in the Valley. The first military post overlooked the farms at West Clear Creek. The next post, Camp Lincoln, was located one mile north of the Fort’s present site, and was used from 1866-1871. The present post was built during 1871-73. Camp Verde was renamed Fort Verde in 1879 to signify permanence. The post was later abandoned in 1891. Local citizens began a museum in the administration building in 1956 and donated several buildings to eventually create Fort Verde State Historic Park in 1970.

Jerome, sometimes nicknamed “The City in the Sky,” was at one time the most talked about mining camp in America. It was a roaring, violent town, once called the most wicked city in America. Jerome’s modern history began in 1876. Three prospectors staked claims on rich copper deposits, which they later sold to the United Verde Copper Company in 1883. Eugene Jerome was the venture’s principal backer. A new owner, William A. Clark, brought in a narrow gauge railroad to reduce freight costs. By the early 20th century, the United Verde was the largest producing copper mine in the Arizona Territory. In 1912, James S. Douglas purchased and developed the Little Daisy Mine. Copper production peaked in 1929, and the population at that time was about 15,000. Loss of profits ultimately brought Jerome mining days to an end in 1953. By 1955, Jerome’s population was less than 100, giving it the title of a “ghost” town. Jerome is now a veritable paradise for artists, photographers and history buffs.

Cottonwood, named after the beautiful cottonwood trees along the Verde River, was a farm settlement in the late 1870’s and developed along with the progress of Jerome, providing homes for the miners, smelter-men, and their families. Cottonwood was incorporated in 1960 and has become a business center of the Verde Valley.

Just two miles northwest of Cottonwood, is the town of Clarkdale, which was planned and built in the early 1900’s to serve the employees and management of the local smelter company. This company smelted copper ore produced from the copper mines near Jerome. Clarkdale maintains a real sense of history. Many of the houses are original structures on its quiet, tree-lined streets.

Military occupation of the Verde Valley began in 1865 at the request of settlers who had established farms near the Verde River, five miles south of present Camp Verde. The influx of settlers and miners had severely disrupted the hunting and gathering activities of the Tonto-Apache and Yavapai Indians, who in turn began raiding the fields for food. The late 1860’s and early 1870’s saw major conflicts between the army and the Indians.

The Indians were later moved to the San Carlos Reservation. The 10-day trek, in the cold, resulted in death for many from harsh weather exposure and insufficient food. An effort by the army to keep the Indians on the San Carlos and Fort Apache reservations resulted in an uprising in 1882 —the last major battle with Apaches in Arizona. Camp Verde, renamed Fort Verde in 1879, became less important with the cessation of raids in 1882. The fort was later abandoned in 1891, then later sold at public auction in 1899.

A museum was founded in 1956 by local citizens who donated several buildings to create Fort Verde State Historic Park in 1970. The 10-acre park includes four of the original adobe fort buildings which contain military artifacts, Indian relics, and articles used by settlers and Indians. The site was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

History is quite plentiful in this geographical center of Arizona.

With the relatively mild four-season climate, recreational opportunities are plentiful in the Verde Valley.

Five state parks and three Pre-Columbian Sinaguan Historic Sites are located in this area. Golf can be played year-round. Over 100 bird species have been identified at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. Beautiful hiking trails weave throughout the Verde Valley. 7,700 ft. Mingus Mountain is a haven for hang gliding enthusiasts with launches occurring regularly on weekends.

Excellent elk, antelope, and deer hunting exists in close proximity to the Verde Valley. For winter sports, a short drive north to Flagstaff offers snowmobiling, cross country trails, and downhill skiing. The General Crook Trail, beginning at Fort Verde Park and winding through the Mogollon Rim to Fort Apache, is a scenic drive of incredible beauty along which can be seen the old mile markers on rocks and trees.

The Verde River flows through Verde Valley supporting one of the states best riparian habitats. Riverfront Park and Dead Horse Ranch State Park provide access to the Verde River Greenway. Thousands of rainbow trout are stocked in the Verde River and Dead Horse Reservoir from November through March providing excellent fishing.

Arcosanti – Paolo Soleri’s city of the future. In 1970, the Cosanti Foundation began building Arcosanti, an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona, about 70 miles north of metropolitan Phoenix. The Arcosanti project, designed to house about 5,000 people, seeks methods to improve urban conditions and reduce our negative impacts on the environment. In this complex, creative environment, apartments, businesses, production, technology, open space, studios, and educational and cultural events are all accessible, while privacy is paramount in the overall design. Greenhouses provide gardening space for public and private use, and act as solar collectors for winter heat. Concerts and other special events in the Colly Soleri Music Center also allow visitors to experience Arcosanti shows, which sometimes include dinner. (928) 632-7135 www.arcosanti.org

Page Springs Fish Hatchery Nestled among the cool pines of the Coconino National Forest, the Page Springs Fish Hatchery offers a cool retreat from the desert during hot summer months. Families enjoy hiking the nature trail bordering Oak Creek, and kids like visiting the show ponds to see the hatchery’s finest and largest trout.

At about 82 acres, this is the state’s largest cold water fish production facility, typically producing over 650,000 trout a year. The property also includes a smaller warm water hatchery, Bubbling Ponds. In recent years, Bubbling Ponds produced sport fish such as bluegill, largemouth bass, and walleye, and sensitive species such as razorback suckers and Colorado pike minnow used by the department in native fish conservation and recovery efforts.

There are wildlife viewing areas at the hatchery site and designated visitor parking. The hatchery also provides crucial habitat for rare or declining species, such as northern Mexican garter snake, Page Springs snail, and a rare species of caddis fly.

Walking trails from the visitor parking lot lead to remote areas of the 100-acre portion of the property that are excellent for viewing wildlife. The department has partnered with the Northern Arizona Audubon Society to develop and maintain wildlife watching opportunities as well as wildlife habitats. It is not uncommon to see big game animals on site or other species such as otters, skunks, osprey, herons, raccoons, other mammals, amphibians, and about 200 species of birds. Bring your hiking boots plus a pair of binoculars, and enjoy the scenery!

Jerome Perched on the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill on Mingus Mountain at an elevation of between 5400 ft. and 7000 ft. lies the once roaring mining town of Jerome. Once

the third most populous community in Arizona, Jerome was founded in 1876, with a peak population of about 15,000 in 1919. The community now has a small but dedicated population of about 500 persons who have rallied to rescue its historic and scenic treasures from neglect and deterioration.

A thriving artist colony and tourist attraction, this unique and quaint old town now houses gift shops, eateries, and art galleries along its cobblestone streets. Historical interests bring many visitors to Jerome, but another attraction is its spectacular setting.

Route 89A is the main entry point for Jerome. Driving south, the highway rises almost 2,000 ft. above Clarkdale as it twists and winds past an extraordinary residential community of unusual and colorful decor surrounded by lush gardens. The views from Jerome encompass much of the Verde Valley, including the notably beautiful red rocks of Sedona to the north. The entire Town of Jerome is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Cornville/Page Springs The Cornville and Page Springs area is located between Cottonwood and Sedona. Several housing developments are scattered throughout this picturesque area of rolling hills, ranches and small farms. Oak Creek flows gently through here creating a greenbelt of lush trees and shrubs. There are several wineries in the area. Page Springs Fish Hatchery, the largest in the state is located along Oak Creek in the

community of Page Springs. The hatchery raises rainbow and brown trout that are shipped out to stock rivers, streams, and lakes throughout Arizona. The hatchery produces about 600,000 fish annually, most of which are rainbow trout used primarily for stocking purposes. There are three parts to the hatchery system, the main hatchery and raceways where the fish are raised, two nature areas on both ends, and a trail along the creek with picnic tables and benches at several locations. This is also a haven for bird watchers.

Tuzigoot Tuzigoot, which is Apache for “crooked water,” is the remnant of a Sinaguan village built between 1125 and 1400. It crowns the summit of a long ridge that rises about 120 feet above the Verde Valley floor. The original pueblo was two stories high in places and had about 77 ground-floor rooms. There were few exterior doors; entry was normally by way of ladders through openings in the roofs. The village began as a small cluster of rooms that were inhabited by about 50 persons for a hundred years. In the 1200’s the population doubled and doubled again as refugee farmers, fleeing drought in outlying areas, settled here. Located in the Clarkdale area.

Lake Montezuma/Rimrock/McGuireville Lake Montezuma, Rimrock, and McGuireville are part of the Verde Valley, centered in Arizona’s Yavapai County. The Valley is surrounded by national forest lands with Wet Beaver Creek flowing through it. Interstate 17 crosses the Valley in the north-south direction, connecting Phoenix and Flagstaff. Lake Montezuma takes its name from the nearby well known Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well, and Indian ruins. Rimrock was named for a dude ranch that was located near the community. Rimrock’s post office, established in 1929, serves the area residents. McGuireville was for many years called “The Station” due to the gas service Eugene McGuire offered to travelers on their way from Camp Verde to Stoneman Lake.

Verde Canyon Railroad The Verde Canyon Railroad line was built from 1911 to 1912, primarily to haul copper from the Clarkdale, Arizona smelter to the vast expanses of the West. Part of the journey is the colorful narration about the remnants of a bygone era; conveying observations of the beauty, history, wildlife, and geology that are an integral part of the Verde Canyon.

The first public roll-out of the Verde Canyon Railroad train occurred on November 23, 1990 from the Clarkdale boarding station. In it’s inaugural trip, the train carried neither freight nor ore, only people. Presently, people from all over the world come to ride the rails into the Verde Canyon — an average of about 90,000 people per year. They come to view the sights, enjoy the casual elegance of train travel, and experience the incredible beauty of Verde Canyon that’s visible only from the train. It’s definitely a trip worth taking!! Please visit www.verdecanyonrr.com for additional information.

The Yavapai-Apache Nation/Cliff Castle Casino The Yavapai-Apache Nation (enrolled members of about 2,400), federally recognized as a sovereign entity, comprises five separate parcels of trust land dedicated to descendents of the Wipukyipai (Yavapai) and Dil Zhee (Tonto Apache) peoples.

The Yavapai speak the Yuman dialect, the Apache People speak the Athabascan dialect. Inter-tribal contacts over the centuries have caused some borrowing of cultural aspects such as housing, marriages, dress, alliances in warfare, and even language. But the two were distinct tribes practicing their own way of life with their own ceremonies and societal functions for hundreds of years before their first European contact. Each tribe inhabited the Verde Valley-Prescott area during that early period. Hills, valleys, and canyons hold many sacred places and contribute to their heritage. Spiritual ties to the land remain strong.

Cliff Castle Casino, which is conveniently located about one hour north of Phoenix and just 20 minutes south of Sedona, has been voted Arizona’s Best Casino an incredible Seventeen years in a row.

Cliff Castle is located in Camp Verde just off I-17, in Arizona’s Wine Country, and within a relatively short drive from Sedona, Prescott and Jerome. Equipped with all your favorite slot machines and live table games, you will feel right at home here. We also have many other fun options for the entire family, including a 20-lane bowling center, arcade, gift shop, live entertainment, and a “Kids Quest” supervised

child care center. Additionally, Cliff Castle offer’s a wide array of dining options, such as Mountain Springs Buffet, Johnny Rockets and Storytellers Gourmet Steakhouse. Come out and enjoy the fun!! See www.cliffcastlecasinohotel.com for additional information.

Montezuma Well Montezuma Well has all the surprise of a lake and fairly lush vegetation in the midst of the desert. The well is a limestone sink formed long ago by the collapse of an immense underground cavern. The springs that feed it flow continuously. Both the Hohokam and Sinagua irrigated crops with its waters. Traces of their irrigation ditches, thickly coated with lime, can be seen.

The Hohokam pit house on view was built around 1100. The Sinaguan dwellings here vary in size from large pueblos of 55 rooms to one-room houses. Between 1125 and 1400, it’s estimated that about 150 to 200 Sinaguans lived here. (North of Camp Verde off I-17).

Montezuma Castle Sinagua farmers began building this five-story, 20-room dwelling sometime early in the 12th century. It stands in a cliff recess about a hundred feet above the valley floor. Early settlers marveled at the structure and thought mistakenly that it was Aztecan in origin. A short distance west is Castle A, once an imposing six-story apartment with about 45 rooms, now a semi-deteriorated ruin. This dwelling was built against the base of the cliff. The creek was a reliable source of water and there was fertile land on the nearby terrace. (North of Camp Verde off I-17)

Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon Situated in the heart of a strikingly beautiful geological area that has mesmerized visitors for years, this unique community of Sedona is surrounded by massive crimson and buff sandstone monoliths standing in colorful contrast with pinon, juniper, and cypress trees. Add to this the spectacular Oak Creek Canyon Highway leading north and climbing 12 miles up, each turn more breathtaking than the last, with lush vegetation, rugged canyons, sycamores, oak, and cottonwood

Complementing the magnificence of these natural creations is the delightfully charming Arts and Crafts Village of “Tlaquepaque,” situated in the heart of Sedona. Meaning “the best of everything,” Tlaquepaque is truly a fitting name for this Spanish colonial village. Displays by several well known Arizona artisans, intriguing one-of-a-kind shops, fine restaurants, sunny flower-filled courtyards, graceful old sycamores, colorful tiles, fountains, and carillons combine to create an unforgettable ambiance.
