Exclusive Raffle Item

“Chickadees”Chickadees artwork designed by William & Mary’s very own

Connie Desaulniers

Donated By: Jean Canoles Bruce

Ticket Information:• First come, first serve for $100 apiece • Sold during the Silent Auction only

• Maximum number of tickets being sold is 50• Winner to be determined in a drawing during the Live Auction

“Jean Bruce commissioned this painting because she and Jack used to like to watch the chickadees in their back yard. We agreed upon the 3-dimensional style that I love to do. The birds literally come out of the canvas. They are made of a 2-part “Apoxie” clay, and were painted to blend in with the background of an espaliered vine reminiscent of Jean’s backyard. The leaves of the vine, which also extend beyond the canvas, are made of copper wire and clay leaves

painted with copper paint and then patinaed.” - Connie Desaulniers

114 CLASSES ARE CANCELLED This painting showcases a rare site: the W&M Campus coated in snow, by artist Blair Stuhlmuller '16, sized 18x24, oil on canvas. The snow covered brick walkway, peppered with both fresh and fading footprints, represents the common path that students, alumni and visitors alike have walked on during their time at William and Mary. No one ever walks through the campus alone; everyone is surrounded by a rich history of other students who have trudged the same path. I hope this painting brings people a sense of joy to the beholder; the same joy that is felt when every student wakes to find the snow has stuck and classes are cancelled.

115 TRANSITION Enjoy this one of a kind 18x24 oil on canvas painting by artist, Paige Stuhlmuller '16. Whether from class to class or season to season, W&M students and the campus are always in transition. Students move from one class to the next, from one career to another, and eventually transition from student to alum. While the world around us is always changing, our relationship with the college never fades. This painting captures a common example of transition in campus life, the time between classes. It permanently displays a fleeting moment in campus life and strives to conjure up other instances of transition in remembrance of the brief, yet wonderful time when everyone was a student at William and Mary.

116 SIMPLY ARTHUR ASHE On February 6, 1993, the world awoke to the news that tennis great and international humanitarian Arthur Ashe had died. As journalists began writing appreciations that would appear in the days and weeks ahead, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated editorial cartoonist Jack Higgins of the Chicago Sun-Times went to his drawing board. What emerged that day was one of the most dramatic cartoons of his career -- a simple, incredibly moving tribute to Richmond's own native son, three-time Grand Slam winner Arthur Ashe. Here is his 1993 pen-and-ink drawing, signed by the artist with his customary "HIGGINS." Later that year, he traveled to Washington to donate the original to a National Press Club auction benefiting young journalists. Now, the winning bidder from that auction has in turn donated this one-of-a-kind Jack Higgins drawing to us, in support of William & Mary Athletics. It has been professionally matted and framed by Washington's noted Watergate Gallery. In the words of the late Arthur Ashe, "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."
