Aloha!
I would like to welcome you all to the 86th State Bar of Nevada Annual Meeting. I have had the honor of serving you all as President for the past year and there is no better location than Hawaii to pass the reins of leadership on to your next President, Bryan Scott.
In the course of my service to the State Bar, I have had immense opportunity to gain a better understanding of the needs of practicing attorneys throughout the state, the challenges facing our organization, and the opportunities on the horizon. The theme for this Annual Meeting, Shake it Up!, reflects the changing times and – I hope – gets us all thinking about what’s ahead.
It’s also apt that we make use of this annual event to network, share experiences, and honor some of the legal giants of our time.
The Hawaiian word Ho’ohanohano means to conduct oneself with distinction – as well as to respect and honor the dignity of others. It is in this spirit that we will honor four long-standing members of the judiciary at this Annual Meeting; Judge Proctor Hug will be presented with the Presidential Award and the Medal of Justice Award will be given posthumously to Judge Michael Fondi (First District Court), Judge Merlyn Hoyt (Seventh District Court) and Justice Cliff Young. As we honor their contributions to the legal community, please join me in welcoming the families of these judges in attendance. And, in the spirit of looking forward, we will also recognize the significant contributions made by an outstanding attorney in practice today by giving this year’s Volunteer of the Year award to Tracy DiFillippo.
Finally, as you take in the exceptional programming and events offered at this Annual Meeting, I encourage you to thank the Annual Meeting Planning Committee and State Bar staff for their efforts to make the Annual Meeting a worthwhile opportunity. In addition, please join me in extending sincere thanks our loyal sponsors and exhibitors whose continued support makes this all possible.

THE BIG ISLAND IS ONE GIGANTIC PLAY GROUND, and not being able to do all activities in one vacation is an often-encountered “problem” in Hawaii. Knowing what activities are possible is the key to choosing the activity that is right for you and/or your family. This is where our complete list of activities for the Big Island comes in handy.
SOME OF THE REASONS FOR THE BIG ISLAND’S OUTDOOR FAME INCLUDE:
• The hundreds of miles of coastline for swimmers, snorkelers and surfers
• The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that offer stunning and ever changing landscapes for the stargazers hikers and bikers
• The Kona (west) side of the island which is known for its world-class golf-courses and whale watching
• The Hilo (east) side that boasts lush rainforest hikes, cascading waterfalls (e.g. the rainbow falls or the akaka falls), hot springs and easily accessible red-hot flowing lava.
BEACHES The Beaches are one of the main attractions of the Big Island, and are great for being lazy, snorkeling, surfing or what not! Here you can find not only world-class white sand beaches, but also black sand beaches and even a green sand beach!
BIKINGIf you like to bike, you can rent a bike to explore the island on your own leisure. Biking is a low-key and relaxing (except if you are biking up the volcano) way to explore Hawaii.
FARMERS MARKETSFarmers markets are one of the little known gems of the Big Island of Hawaii. They are spread over the whole island and with only a little planning you can stop by one for breakfast, lunch or souvenir shopping on your itinerary around the island.
HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARKBy far the most popular tourist destination on the Big Island is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Here you can hike over recently solodified lava fields, take hikes through rain and fern forests that make you feel like you are in jurrasic park, see the lava glow at night from the Jaggar Museum, and much more!
GOLFThe Big Island is known as the golf capital of the state, and Kona is in the heart of it. Some of the biggest names in course design have carved championship golf courses into the island that will call you back to the green – again and again. Read more about Golfing on the Big Island.
HELICOPTER TOURSThe Big Island hides many of its awe-inspiring wonders behind obstacles that are impassable and are impossible to see – except through the air! Think about the hidden waterfalls or fresh lava flows, and what about the lava lakes in the Halema’uma’u and Pu’u O’o craters the Kilauea volcano?
HIKINGThe Big Island hosts some GREAT hikes through barren lava fields, lush rainforests or to secluded beaches. Or do you feel like hiking through a crates that was filled with lava only 50 years ago? That is also possible!
HORSEBACK RIDINGSeveral ranches around Waimea offer the opportunity to explore their (often very large) range as part of a guided tour of the pastures with spectacular views of the coastline and peaks. It is also possible to make it of the range and explore other spectacular parts of the island, such as Waipi’o valley.
HOT PONDSThere are several hot springs / hot ponds in the Puna district on the east coast of the Big Island. Most are publicly accessible and especially if you are staying more than 7 days on the Big Island, these make a great addition to your itinerary!
LAVA VIEWINGBoth Hilo and Volcano Village are well suited to use as a base when you want to go and see the lava. Hilo is closer to the lava flows in Kalapana, while Volcano village is literally around the corner of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

THE BIG ISLAND’S KOHALA COAST is a magical place. While one end reaches from lush green rainforest land dotted with deep valleys, the other spans into dry and sunny territory lined with white sand beaches. Among all of the natural beauty though is an abundance of spectacular restaurants. While many are located at high end resorts like the Hilton Waikoloa Village, others are scattered along the coast out in the small port town of Kawaihae.
If you’re craving a high end meal of Pacific Rim cuisine, Roy’s Waikoloa Bar & Grill is the place to go. As a classic Hawaiian staple, Roy’s is known for serving delicious steaks, seafood, salads and desserts all with a Pacific twist. It’s appropriate to dress up a bit here, but over the top isn’t necessary.
Out in Kawaihae is Cafe Pesto, a long standing Big Island Italian restaurant where each dish has a local twist on it. Not to be confused with the other Cafe Pesto in Hilo, the Kawaihae location is the best Italian food on this side of the island.
Over in the resort area of Waikoloa, a number of great restaurants await. Brown’s Beach House at the Fairmont Orchid offers American and modern Hawaiian cuisine, but only for dinner. Nearby is the CanoeHouse, where Pacific Rim dishes are serves along the beach.
The Kohala Coast offers an array of cuisines as diverse as its terrain, so don’t forget to explore the coast and its eateries.

NORIO’S JAPANESE RESTAURANT & SUSHI BAR

The menu highlights specialty rolls that incorporate soft-shell crab, fresh scallops, and fatty tuna, and it revels in main courses like misoyaki butterfish and lobster-and-shrimp tempura. COAST GRILLE & OYSTER BAR
The signature restaurant of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is known far and wide for its superb Hawaiian and Pacific Rim cuisine. While serious diners charge forth in pursuit of fresh seafood (Kona-by-way-of-New England lobster, farm-raised moi, and pistachio-crusted opah, to name but a few), the restaurant’s oyster bar offers a more casual setting for folks looking to eat light and enjoy a few cocktails. 808-882-5810, 808-880-3192
CANOE HOUSE
This restaurant’s Pacific Rim-influenced menu boasts a wide range of scrumptious seafood options. Enjoy fresh-from-the-sea mahi mahi marinated in miso sake, savor lemon-pepper scallops grilled and served with wild mushrooms, or delight in flavorful nips of nori-wrapped ahi tempura and ginger-scallion tofu. 808-885-6622, 808-881-7911
BROWN’S BEACH HOUSE Outdoor seating and terrific ocean side scenery set the stage at this Orchid treasure, whose extensive wine list and traditional Hawaiian cuisine have turned more than a few heads. Dinner patrons are wowed by the menu’s versatility, and choices range from seared crisp moi with basmati rice to a Kobe-style rib-eye with fingerling potatoes and ponzu dipping sauce. 808-887-7368, 808-885-2000
