Dear Counselor,

Thank you for all you do for students. The guidance you provide them is essential to their future personal and professional success. Without you, many of them would have difficulty finding their direction in life. As president, I am happy to provide you our Counselor’s Guide with information needed to assist your students who choose to attend Eastern New Mexico University.

ENMU is known for its personal touch, accredited academic programs and our affordable cost. Our slogan is “Student Success–that’s what it’s all about” so whatever your students’ goals and aspirations, we will do everything we can to help them achieve success. We have student-centered faculty and staff where the

student truly comes first. ENMU has maintained a 95 percent student satisfaction rate and ranked one of the highest among New Mexico universities each year since 1999.

For the 19th straight year, ENMU set a fall enrollment record with 5,946 students. Our tuition is in the top 10 percent of the most affordable southwestern four-year universities, and the ACT scores of our incoming freshmen are above the state average. We have upgraded our campus with over $150 million in construction projects-including constructing or renovating state-of-the-art classroom buildings, athletic facilities and a new residence hall. In addition, our new on-campus football/track stadium will be inaugurated with our first home game on Sept. 10, 2016.

When our students need to take a break, they find numerous student organizations to provide them with leadership opportunities, service projects and camaraderie. With our well-respected College of Fine Arts, Associated Student Activities Board and Multicultural Affairs, ENMU hosts a busy schedule of theatre, music and art productions, as well as concerts, speakers and ethnic events that are free or reduced cost for students. Our religious organizations and fraternities and sororities are also a vital part of our campus community.

As a member of the Lone Star Conference and Southwest Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, our student-athletes have experienced numerous championships. In 2015, our football team finished in third place in possibly the toughest conference in NCAA Division II and our men’s and women’s rodeo teams continue to excel at the national level. Our student-athletes achieve a higher graduation rate than the student body as a whole. For your students who want to enjoy an active lifestyle, our intramural program offers sports based on skill level and competitiveness. Students are able to choose from various intramural activities throughout the school year.

Kickback With The Greyhound Pack On ENMU Junior Preview Day, MARCH 25, 2017

Juniors attending Kickback with the Greyhound Pack can start narrowing down their college choices. During our

Junior Preview Day, students will meet the faculty and learn more about their area of interest. They can tour our

beautiful campus and get a glimpse of ENMU college life providing a first-hand experience of why so many students

have chosen ENMU. Juniors will be provided with important information about our admission process, financial aid,

student activities and more. We also will provide door prizes, including two $500 scholarships and iPods.

Campus Visit

Students can experience our college campus, first-hand. They will be provided a personalized guided tour of the

campus with our President’s Ambassadors and have the opportunity to talk with current students to find out more

about ENMU and why our students chose Eastern as their college home. During their visit, your students will have

the option to meet with a faculty member in their area of interest, eat at the Crossroads Café Dining Hall and stop by

our campus bookstore to get a feel for what Eastern has to offer. After the visit, they will find that Eastern is the place

they’ll want to spend their college days.

Coming to Eastern is easy! Our admission process requires submitting three critical documents: an application, an

official high school and/or college transcripts if dual or concurrent enrollment happened, and ACT or SAT test scores.

Best of all, applying to ENMU is free! ENMU uses high school grades and/or standardized test scores with the help of

the Advising Center to select the right college courses for each student’s first semester. For more information about

An affordable education is one way ENMU helps students succeed. All students are encouraged to complete the Free

Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used for federal Pell Grants, state grants and student loans as

well as Admissions Academic Scholarships and on-campus employment. Students may begin filling out the FAFSA

starting Oct. 1 for the following school year. Please encourage them to list ENMU’s federal school code of 002651. Once

they send in their scholarship application, we will review their file to make sure that the best scholarship package is

offered. All New Mexico universities may be affected by lottery funding.

The Crossroads Café Dining Hall offers students an ultimate dining experience at an affordable price. The all-you-can-

eat meal plan allows students to choose from eight different dining stations serving a variety of choices. There are

always the essentials including pizza and burgers. Specialty stations include Pasta Perfect, South of the Border and the

Classics Comfort food. For students wanting a lighter meal, our garden fresh salad bar has over two dozen toppings, two

kinds of soups and a made-to-order sandwich bar.

ENMU residency policy helps assure that your students get a good start to their college career. New students who

have less than 30 hours of college credit after high school graduation and are under 21 years old are required to live on

campus and purchase a meal plan. Exemptions to the residential/meal plan requirement may be granted to students

living with parents, married and/or having dependent children. Meal plan waivers may be granted to students with

medical needs not met by the meal plan provider.

Living on campus can contribute significantly to your students’ success in college. They will meet people who will

become lifelong friends. They will have the chance to learn new things about themselves, about living and working

with others, and about being part of a community and its traditions. Living on campus gives students the chance to get

involved beyond the walls of their classrooms, as a variety of programs are planned throughout the year. These may be

social, recreational, cultural or educational activities that give students a chance to meet people and learn new things.

They will find just the environment needed in our three residence halls and West Campus Apartments. San Juan Village

conveniently is located on campus property and independently managed.

ENMU is very proud of our student-athletes. The halls of Greyhound Arena are filled with the names of students

selected for All-American, All-Region and All-Conference teams, as well as the Academic All-Star Team

recognition. ENMU’s Greyhounds compete in the Lone Star Conference and in the Southwest Region National

Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

ENMU has a long and proud history of success. Our athletics have achieved national championships in basketball,

rodeo and track. Numerous conference championships have been claimed in the nationally respected Lone Star

Conference. Several ENMU student-athletes have continued on to professional careers. Best of all, student-athletes

at ENMU achieve a higher graduation rate than the student body as a whole. Academic and athletic successes

characterize Eastern’s student-athletes.

Student-athletes interested in college athletics should proceed with the following steps to contact our coaching staff:

• Visit GoEasternAthletics.com.

• From the menu bar on the right hand side, click on RECRUITS, displaying the drop down menu.

• In the drop down menu, click on Prospective Athlete Questionnaires.

• Click on the appropriate questionnaire and provide the information requested. The questionnaire does not obligate students in any way or affect their performing eligibility.

• When finished entering the required information, click on the submit button at the bottom.

The students’ information will be sent directly to the coaching staff.

All of our athletic programs recruit student-athletes to fill positions for graduating or transferring students.

Making contact with our coaching staff does not guarantee a position on one of our athletic teams.

Eastern Athletics

With intramural sports, great skills are not necessary to enjoy an active lifestyle. To encourage participation, most of our

activities are offered in divisions based on skill and competitiveness, allowing students to choose an appropriate level of

play. Activities include flag football, volleyball, dodgeball, soccer, basketball, kickball, softball and many other sports.

ENMU’s Associated Students Activities Board (ASAB) is a student programming board that plans and implements

recreational, educational, cultural, social and entertaining events for the ENMU campus and surrounding communities.

The events brought to campus are decided on and run by the students and paid for by student fees.

ASAB has many areas of involvement for students who are interested in joining. Involvement in ASAB is a great way to

gain experience in a variety of different fields.

The ASAB Special Events Committee programs events and activities for students and surrounding community to be able

to relax and a have a good time, such as:

Entertainment

From comedians to illusionists, the ASAB Entertainment Committee prides itself on the quality of the performers it

brings to campus. The entertainment committee is responsible for programming events such as:

Music

From live music to DJs, the ASAB Music Committee is all about hearing the latest music and sharing the newest dance

moves. The music committee is responsible for programming events such as:

Social

While each committee holds their own events, they are required to hold two free movie nights, a social issue event and

face painting at ENMU home games. Past social issues events have included:

The Office of Counseling and Career Services is equipped with licensed therapists on call 24/7 to address the issues of

our students. Depression, anxieties, phobias, relationship problems, anger management, financial stress, communication

problems, fear of academic failure or any other chronic needs of students would be assessed and treated within a strictly

confidential and safe environment between student and counselor. Career counseling and development is provided

for students in the areas of career goal clarification and career interest inventories, selecting an appropriate major,

practicum/internship placements, and job search techniques (resume and cover letter preparation, interview coaching

and career fairs).

The Office of Disability Services and Testing serves students with a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited

to health impairment, physical disability, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, depression and anxiety.

ENMU operates under a “no tolerance” level of enforcement relating to fighting, weapons, and alcohol and drugs on

University property. The ENMU Police Department is a full-service police department dedicated to serving the needs

days per week.

ASENMU created the Safe Ride program to protect ENMU students from the dangers of drinking and driving.

The ENMU Safe Ride program is:

• Free to any ENMU student

• Available three to four days per week

• Completely student operated

• Available in the Portales vicinity

Every ride is provided by both a male and female employee. The student employees pick up students and transport them

safely home in the Portales vicinity.

Tutoring And Supplemental Instruction | 575.562.2280

The Office of Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction is a peer academic assistance program that helps ENMU students

achieve academic success. Tutoring sessions, by appointment, are recommended although walk-in requests are available

in the Student Success Center-the Alley in the Campus Union (CUB). Supplemental Instruction sessions are open to all

class members and welcome to all students in the course. Sessions focus on content and learning/study skills strategies.
