Archaeologists, digging in areas near streams and

springs of Franklin County, unearthed artifacts dating

back 10,000 years to the Ice Age. These remnants were left by nomadic hunters,

following herds of animals across Franklin

County. Centuries later, Native American tribes of Iroquois, Shawnees, and

Delaware would follow the same migratory paths and

hunt the valleys of Franklin County. In the 1700s,

Franklin County was the frontier. Scots-Irish, German,

and Welsh immigrants settled throughout Franklin

County, establishing homesteads and hamlets

in and around present-day Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg,

and Waynesboro. Seeking freedom and opportunity,

these immigrants were drawn to the lands of Franklin

County--reminiscent of their homelands and filled with

the natural resources to build a prosperous, new life.

Fort Loudoun: More Than A Provincial Fort

Fort Loudoun was built in 1756 by the Penn-sylvania Regiment, commanded by Colonel John Armstrong. The fort was used as a supply base for the Forbes Campaign and was part of a series of forts set up to protect the settlers. It was named after John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun. Popular history marks the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, as the first occasion of America’s colonial rebellion against British troops. In fact, the Black Boys Rebellion at Fort Loudoun in 1765 was an earlier colonial rebellion. Life on the frontier was difficult enough with-out increasing the tension between settlers and Indians, which is the heart of the Black Boys Rebellion. After the French and Indian War, British law forbade trade with Indians, but actually stopping traders was another matter.

Locally, James Smith was angered by the attacks on his friends and neighbors, using the weapons and ammunition supplied by the illegal and reckless trade. On March 5, 1765, Smith and the Black Boys stopped a pack horse caravan of eighty-one horses at both Mercers-burg and McConnellsburg, cautioning the

traders to not proceed with the illegal materi-als. The convoy did not heed the warning. The next day, the Black Boys stopped the car-avan at Sideling Hill and set fire to the contra-band. The angry traders appealed to the Brit-ish authorities at Fort Loudoun. The British arrested several citizens. In response, James Smith gathered 300 men and marched on the fort, where they captured enough men to exchange two British soldiers for each colonial. But, the British kept the weapons of the incar-cerated men--a major offense to the frontiers-men, who depended on their rifles for hunting and protection. Over the next several months, the Black Boys continued to confront the trad-ers and clash with the British at Fort Loudoun. It culminated on November 16, 1765, when James Smith and the Black Boys surrounded Fort Loudoun. The contingent grew to 100 men, firing on the fort throughout the night. The British surrendered. The weapons confis-cated months earlier were returned, and Fort Loudoun was abandoned.

Neil Swanson wrote a historical novel about the incident at Fort Loudoun called “The First Rebel,” and the book became the movie “Allegheny Uprising,” starring John Wayne.

From 1730 to 1755, settlements along the Franklin County frontier sprang up. For generations, the same land was used by Native Americans for hunting and foraging. Cultures clashed. Native Americans lashed out. The frontier settlers built private forts around their dwellings to protect their property and families. Chambers Fort, Fort Davis, Fort Maxwell, and Fort Marshall are notable fortifications of the Franklin County frontier. These fortifications deterred attacks, but the settlers remained at risk.On April 1, 1756, Delaware Indians burned the private Fort McCord, near Edenville. Twenty-seven pioneers were killed or taken captive. Today, a Celtic Cross marks the site of the raid and first person account titled “A Journal of the Captivity of Jean Lowry” recounts the frontier woman’s ordeal. On July 26, 1764 near Greencastle, schoolmaster Enoch Brown taught lessons when Indians attacked. Brown was shot and scalped. Eleven students were tomahawked and scalped. Archie McCullough was able to crawl to a nearby spring and survived the scalping. Today, a memorial stands on the site to remember the ultimate sacrifice of these pioneers.

The replica fort that stands on the original site today was constructed in 1993.

“The date that would be carved on the monument and printed in the histories and textbooks was April 19, 1775. On that day Americans would march out to face the British regulars across the village green in Lexington, Massachusetts. But, they would not be the first Americans to march out for that purpose. They would not be the first by ten years, one month and eleven days. The day on which James Smith’s three hundred men marched down the muddy road to Fort Loudoun in Pennsylvania was March 9, 1765.”

2015 marks 250 years since Franklin County frontiersmen drove the British from Fort Loudoun.

Special events are scheduled on September 25-27, 2015 at Fort Loudoun.

Franklin County: A Gateway to Freedom

“Franklin County was “a hazardous area of 100 miles which contained the most secretive, tangled lines

of the Underground Railroad.”--Charles Blockson

Franklin County played an important role in the passage to freedom--the Underground Railroad. In colonial America, the Mason Dixon Line settled a land dispute, but as America evolved, the Mason Dixon Line signified a difference in social perspective. It signaled entry to the north for escaping enslaved. Franklin County had a mountainous terrain with numerous hiding places in caves and wooded areas. By 1860, Franklin County had the fifth largest African-American population in the state. Franklin County offered numerous entry points as well as natural protection. The Jacob Shockey farm near Rouzerville just across the Maryland line was at the foot of the South Mountain range.

The forest sheltered the fugitives by day, and under the cover of darkness, Shockey would guide the fugitives eight miles to the Hiram Wertz farm near Quincy. From the Wertz farm, the escapees traveled another eight miles to an African American community near Thaddeus Steven’s Caledonia Iron Works. Traveling today, the route would parallel PA-997. The community, sometimes called Africa, was the third-largest African American population of Franklin County in 1850.Learn about this freedom story in “Road To Freedom: Underground Railroad of South Mountain,” available on the visitors bureau YouTube channel--YouTube.com/FranklinCountyVisit.

From 1715 to 1776, about 250,000 Scots-Irish immigrated to America, with a concen-tration settling along the East Coast, particu-larly in Pennsylvania and regions southward. Franklin County has a strong concentration of Scot-Irish and German ancestry. Approx-imately one-third of America’s ancestry is Scots-Irish or German. Genealogy research-ers can explore family ties at several research sites in Franklin County. A good time to visit is Franklin County’s annual history ramble in April--Spring Into History--when nearly 25 history sites of Franklin County are free and open to the public.

Burning & Rebirth of Chambersburg

The town of Chambersburg was devastated by the fires set by General John McCausland (un-der orders from General Jubal Early) during the Civil War. McCausland and his men had de-manded $500,000 in U. S. Currency or $100,000 in gold. The town was not able to raise the funds.

It was the

only town in the North that was burned by the Confederates during

the war. The Rebels claimed the burning was necessary in retribution for Union destruction by General David Hunter in Virginia.

A letter the day after the fire to PA Governor Andrew Curtin described the destruction, “[the Rebels]... fired the whole center portion of town, embracing twenty squares.” Most all the town’s buildings including about 300 homes were destroyed. The only structures not burned were churches and the Masonic Temple which Confederate Masons. protected/ Residents lost homes, food, clothing, and furniture. Several reported that they lost absolutely everything ex-cept the clothes they were wearing. Remarkably, only one Chambersburg resident is known to have died in the fires.

By the next day aid was already arriving in the form of food and clothing sent on the Cumberland Valley Railroad from nearby com-munities. The state government also sent aid.

In a letter to his brother and sister dated August 3, 1864, Reverend B. S. Schneck gave a chilling description of the Rebel destruction of Chambersburg. He said, “Some houses in each square were fired, and then others caught. In some cases, money was offered to be taken (in out-of-the-way parts) by the men and the prop-

erties then saved. Except one house (the Miss-es Dennys 8 doors above where we are now), every house down on both sides for 7 squares is gone...The Bank, all the stores, all the hotels, every shoe, clothing and other store (except in the outskirts some small grocery etc. shops) are all consumed. In most instances, little – in very many, nothing – was saved, not even a single change of clothing…..Help on the way of provi-sions and clothing is coming…But such a scene of Ruin! No imagination can conceive it. Gover-nor Curtin came up last evening and said to me: ‘the reality is fearfully beyond my conceptions.’”

The Franklin Repository newspaper of August 24, 1864 reported the destruction as: “the fairest town of the Cumberland Valley is in ruins. Half its people are homeless and very many are pen-niless and helpless. The stoutest heart must quail as the blackened walls, and withered shades of our beautiful village are witnessed, where were once cheerful and hospitable homes, heart some trees, and the busy hum of industry and the enterprise of our merchants….Chambersburg must be rebuilt….Its stores must be replaced—its shops must be resounded again with the sound of the anvil and chisel; its artisans must find the same demand for their handiwork, and

its professions have the same duties as they had a month ago….new structures must soon turn it to enterprise and profit. In short, the business of Chambersburg, in all its various branches, was imperatively demanded by the wants of the community, and it must be restored.”

The newspaper went on to suggest that the re-construction of the town would depend upon the determination and energy of its people. And that the best way to do that was to all strive to-gether for the common cause by working side-by-side to accomplish the greater good of the community over the greater good of each indi-vidual.

The newspaper predicted that there would be more money to be made in the town in the next two years than in the past five. And that money will be made by outsiders who come in to take advantage if the citizens do not undertake it themselves.

And finally the newspaper issued a challenge, saying “One and all let us resolve that Cham-bersburg shall be rebuilt, that her population will again sit down in prosperity where rebel brutality made withering desolation, and when once resolved, the good work will be more than half done.”

In the North, the burning of Chambersburg was seen as a Confederate atrocity. The call “remem-ber Chambersburg” echoed throughout the North. Nearly 600 citizens filed claims asking the federal government to repay them for the damage. Reverend Schneck’s claim included the personal loss of his private library of over 1,200 books.

On February 15, 1866, the U. S. Congress allo-cated $500,000 toward the damages which were estimated at three million dollars including about $1.7 million in total property loss.

In his book “The Great Invasion” by Jacob Hoke, the author gives his impression of the aftermath as follows: Chambersburg was “burned in the centennial of its existence, A.D. 1864. The beautiful county in the midst of which it stands was rescued from desolation by the thrift and industry of our fathers; the success of the cause for which the rebels fought would have turned the tide of its prosperity backwards toward its original wilderness. That success was denied them, and civilization and morality and religion triumphed over barbarism, immorality and oppression, and in its consummation the burn-ing of Chambersburg bore its part. It was part of the price paid for the great and glorious result finally achieved.”

It took the citizens of Chambersburg nearly thirty years to rebuild the town destroyed by the war.

Why not take the day out to try kayaking? Kirk Wishard,

who runs Kirk’s Kayaks in Franklin County, said every

time visitors kayak, the experience is different. “There is

not one like another,” he said. “And you get to see

wildlife along the way.” This wildlife includes hawks,

herons and even nesting bald eagles. that he’s found in

Franklin County. Rivers that can be kayaked in the area

include the Conococheague Creek, Antietam Creek and

a little further into neighbording counties, Yellow

Breeches, and even the Potomac River. With

beautiful lakes in the area, including Long Pine and

Cowan’s Gap, even the most unexperienced on the

water, can learn to kayak. Smooth water or more

challenging, Franklin County’s waterways can be

kayaked. Along the Conococheague Creek in particular,

there are multiple points to “drop in,” including spots

near Rabbit Run Creek and behind Talhelm’s Gas Station

in Greencastle. This inexpensive sport also gives friends

an opportunity to catch up and talk while out on the

river, which is a good fit for many ages and physical

abilities. The sport is also a great way for families to

bond. “I’ve watched children go from tandem kayaking

to asking to have their own kayak,” Wishard said.

GREAT FISHIN’ SPOTS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.The 1.1-mile section of the Falling Spring from Walker Road downstream to Fifth Avenue offers excellent fishing, particularly in autumn. Fishermen may only use artificial lures and can only keep fish from mid-June through Labor Day.

Another excellent source of rainbow and brown trout is the East Branch of Antietam Creek, near Waynesboro. The stocked fishing area begins at the Route 16 bridge and continues downstream for one mile to Welty Road. It is a catch and release fishing spot.

Conococheague Creek in Caledonia State Park, Fayetteville, just off Route 30, is a popular family-fishing spot because it is heavily stocked with brook trout. For boat fishermen, Letterkenny Reservoir, off Route 641 near Roxbury, is stocked with rainbow trout.

The West Branch of Antietam Creek flows through Mont Alto State Park, along Route 997. It is another good trout fishing stream.

Some of the best “fishing waters” of Franklin County are on private property, so it is important for fishermen to remember the generosity of landowners and respect the property as if it were their own. Fishermen, private landowners, and local organizations such as the Falling Spring Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Falling Spring Greenway are working together to preserve the area’s natural resources and enjoy the fishing for years to come.

Birding & Wildlife

History on the A.T.While hiking the Appalachian Trail in Franklin County consider this, seven of John Brown’s raiders escaped from Harpers Ferry in October 1859 and fled north into Franklin County for help. They knew John Brown’s friend, Mrs. Rit-ner, who lived in Chambersburg would help them escape. The seven, all being pursued by bounty hunters and their dogs, followed what today is the Appala-chian Trail into Pennsylvania. Those who escaped Harpers Ferry were Owen Brown, Barclay Coppick, Charles Tidd, Francis Merriman, John Cook, Osborn Anderson, and Albert Hazlett.

Cook left the mountaintop trail to seek food. He was captured at the church at Mont Alto and delivered to Franklin County jail. He was later extradited to Charlestown, VA (now Charles Town, West Virginia) where he was tried and hanged. Hazlett was discovered near Newville and held in prison in Carlisle. He too was extradited back to Charlestown, tried, and hanged.

The other five got away clean, but only Owen Brown and Osborn Anderson survived past the American Civil War.

The habitats of South Mountain and Michaux State Forest draw a variety of birds. South Mountain is one of the Audubon Society’s Important Bird Areas. Beautiful songbirds like the Wood Thrush, Oven-bird, or Veery populate large areas of mountain woodland. Common Loons can be seen visiting the Long Pine Dam reservoir. South Mountain is truly a birders delight in every season of the year, and a

good resource is Birding Around South Mountain by Audubon Pennsylvania. The Tuscarora Mountain, part of the Buchanan State Forest, is on the opposite end of Franklin County. Cowan’s Gap is a wind gap through the Tuscarora Moun-tains. In the fall, many woodland birds migrate southward. Raptors--prey birds like hawks and eagles--use the updrafts of the mountain-

sides to conserve energy on long migration routes.

It is no coincidence that early frontiersmen carried the original weapon of the frontier, the Pennsylva-nia rifle. If you are into hiking, of any and all distances, do we have some hiking trails for you!

At Caledonia State Park, between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, there are a plethora of hiking trails from less than a half mile to five miles in length.Trolley Trail, Whispering Pine Natural Trail and Mid-land Trail are the easiest. Charcoal Hearth Trail, Rac-coon Trail, and Quarry Gap Road Trail the most dif-ficult. Among the highlights are hiking in a beautiful

forest, mostly devoid of other hikers at least during the week, several beautiful meandering streams, delightful waterfalls, ruins of a historic charcoal hearth and an old wagon road. Bring your bird boo++k to identify all the species of woodland birds you will see along the way. Several of the trails connect to the Appalachian Trail, which runs 2,186 miles, so you can brag to your friends that you hiked the Appalachian Trail when you get home. In July 2013, Destination Arts stepped front and center in the efforts to revitalize the town center by filling vacant store fronts with all forms of art. Tapping the local and regional pool of artists as well as large-market artists of DC and New York , the Waynesboro Arts Alliance filled seven vacant storefronts with “pop-up galleries.” Teaming up the art and the art space was a win-win for Waynesboro. Four of the seven spaces are no longer va-cant, and now five galleries are working to become per-

manent. Among these are an artist’s co-op at 42 W. Main Street, the Ceramic Arts Center at 13 S. Church Street, and the Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery, which provides after-school programs for children.“We just want lots and lots of people to come to Waynes-boro and have a wonderful time,” said Andrew Sussman, president of the arts alliance’s board. What started as a renovation project more than 5 years ago has turned into a staple of relaxed dining at the Highline Restaurant and Railway Lounge in Greencastle.

Located by the historic Highline Train Station, the restaurant is owned by Kim Robinson, who originally wanted to turn it into offices.

The nearby train station went into service on February 7, 1909. At one time, it had seven round-trip passenger trains daily between Hagerstown and Harrisburg and morning commuters going to Philadelphia and New York. The last train passed in February of 1936, and the station fell into disrepair. Now, Greencastle Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops use the building as scout headquarters and have worked to improve the appearance of the building.

“It was a beautiful property,” Robinson said. It inspired her to create the restaurant, which serves American cuisine in an upscale, relaxed manner with skilled and trained chefs and welcoming, friendly wait staff.

The restaurant features select specials such as wine, pasta and other entrees, often including

half price bottles of select wine and delicious-ly discounted pasta entrees, like Fresh Berry Pasta Alfredo or the crowd-pleasing Beef Stroganoff.

Delicious, handcrafted cocktails are available as well, named after the railway the restaurant sits so close to. Try a Steam Engine Bloody Mary, a Highline Cosmo or a Caboose Martini with your meal. The location is perfect for hosting small banquets and dinner parties of up to 50 at one time in the relaxed, carefree atmosphere of the Railway Lounge. Happy Hour is from 4-6p.m. Tuesday through Friday and features a special $6 menu.

Robinson said the restaurant has a focus on fresh, locally sourced food, with select cuts of Angus beef and different fresh fish cho-sen weekly. In addition to the beef and fish options, some house favorites include jumbo lump crab cakes, pork chops, homemade soups and rack of lamb. Fresh herbs are picked from the outdoor garden including lavender, parsley, thyme, basil, mint and oregano.

“We have a menu for everyone,” Robinson said.

Highline Restaurant & Railway LoungeRelaxing, upscale cuisine

Highline features an outdoor patio among its areas for dining, It also has a covered patio.

Each week, a different fresh fish dish is served. As well as fish, Highline also features select cuts of Angus beef.

When the “hungries hit,” Franklin County will satisfy your appetite with a variety of cuisines--Asian, El Salvadoran, Italian, and Korean to name a few.

Try Asian fusion and Japanese at the always-friendly Kenzo, where the owners remember your name. Located about 2.5 miles east of the square of Chambersburg, Kenzo has fresh and flavorful sushi and sashimi. If Thai food hits the spot, the Thai Pad Basil and Thai Curry will put a smile on your face.

Montezuma’s is a standing favorite for Mexican food, and with locations in Chambersburg and Waynesboro, there is one nearby. The salsa is fresh and everything pops with flavor. Combo dinners are a good way to try a variety of dishes. Las Palmeras in Chambersburg specializes in El Salva-doran dishes. The pupusas--masa cakes stuffed with cheese, meats beans or queso then grilled--are delicioso! Many menu items are under $10, so it is as reasonable as it is tasty. In downtown Green-castle, El Sombrero is another option for Hispanic cuisine. Near Traveler’s Trunk and Upscale Consignment, shoppers can have a scrumptious lunch or try a choco-chimichanga for dessert; it is a flour tortilla wrapped in a chocolate bar, deep-fried, and topped with ice cream and whipped cream.

Korean Bulgogi House on Loudon Street in Chambersburg offers traditional Korean cuisine and has a create-your-own-platter option. It lets diners select the side of noodles, fried rice, or steamed rice to pair with one, two, or three main dishes such as Bulgogi Beef, Ginger Spicy Pork, Korean Pancake, or BBQ Chicken, plus a side of kimchi, cucumber salad, or radish kimchi. For a beverage,

try the Korean rice punch--Sikhye. It is sweet and a good way to top off a spicy meal.

Try a slice of Italy at Pat & Carla’s Italian Eatery, and be sure to add a salad. The baked “leave to us” sub is amazing! For salads, the steak and cheese is a hardy favorite. Any time is a good time for Pat & Carla’s. Pick from three locations in Chambersburg--one on Lincoln Way East, one on Lincoln Way West, and another on South Main.

Flannery’s On The SquareIn 1810, it was the William McKinstry house. Today it is Flannery’s Tavern on the Square in the center of Mercersburg’s historic district. Approaching the building, the beautiful stone exterior is reminiscent of colonial Williamsburg. Open the door and discover the tavern area mixed with locals and skiers from nearby Whitetail. People gather for a quick bite, a good beer, and the ca-maraderie of sharing the televised sports. It’s a cool juxtapose of centuries. Stepping out of the

bar area and into the dining room, stonewalls and fireplace create an intimate dining atmosphere. It’s easy to get the feeling of the 1810 house of town leader William McKinstry. The Tavern offers a variety of burgers--8 ounces of thick, juicy, deliciousness with freshly-cut

fries. The dining room menu has delicious entrées like Oak Barrel Sirloin and Shrimp and Crab Risotto. Flannery’s is a timeless classic mixing the flavors

of today and yesterday and serving great food every day.

The John Allison Public House in Greencastle is the sister restaurant of Flannery’s and shares the same passion for good food.

Wednesday is Burger Night. Thursday is Yuengs and Wings. Every weekday has a lunch special, but no matter when you come, you will definitely be

ready for your next visit.

Always A Good Fit

No matter the mood The Orchards has a setting to fit the mood. You can wind down, lighten up, celebrate, or simply meet friends for a quick bite, The Civil Lounge offers a great tapas menu, is cozy, and casual. Relax Lounge and Patio, located on the east side of the restaurant has a good energy--a great place for friends. Have an intimate

dinner or bring the family together to celebrate in the main dining room. Plus, the Orchards has private rooms for lunch meetings and a larger area for

events and weddings. The Orchards is always a good fit.

Although it is located just off Lincoln Way West in Chambersburg, the deck at Dilly’s feels like the beach, especially on a breezy day.

Reid’s Winery, just across the Adams County line in Ortanna, is an anchor stop of the trail, and it offers sparkling ciders and artisans wines. Enjoy live music and relax with a delicious plate of pulled pork, beer sauce, and citrus coleslaw.

Good-Ta-Go is tucked into the Chambers-5 Business Park along Orchard Drive and offers a rotating selection of craft beers--both on tap and in the bottle. Try one of the weekly special draughts, only $3/glass. Fill a growler of your favorite on-tap beer or mix a six-pack of craft beers. Live entertainment is onsite every Friday from 6 PM to 8 PM.

What goes great with beer? Wings! The Cottage Pub & Restaurant, on Wayne Avenue in Chambersburg, is known for wings. Garlic Parmesan, Honey Teriyaki, Buffalo, Baton Rouge, Devil, and Honey BBQ are just a few of the “flavors to delight, incite, or ignite!” The Cottage has been making customers happy since 1933.

The first Saturday of May means Blues Brews & Barbecue at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Chambersburg. Kick back and enjoy; it is a great time! Taste and learn at the Waynes-boro Brewmaster Beer Festival, also in May. It is a chance to taste more than 30 craft beers and learn a little about beer-making. On August 15, 2015 the Capitol Theatre takes center stage again for Pop A Cork for the Capitol--a wine festival and fund-raiser for the historic theatre. It is a relaxing afternoon of wine-tasting, local musicians, and delicious food pairings. Finally, unwind at the Mercersburg Beer & Wine Festival on September 26, 2015 with more than 40 breweries and 10 wineries set on the beautiful backdrop of history--the early American frontier and boyhood home of 16th American president James Buchanan.

MercersburgI-81, EXIT 5 (WEST)

Mercersburg is the boyhood home of 15th president James Buchanan, and the Main Street remains strikingly similar to the days when Buchanan played outside his father’s general store, which in the present time occupies 15 North Main. Mix a little sightseeing with shopping and lunch for an impromptu pick-me-up or a weekend getaway. Mercersburg, also has a golf and ski resort for year-round recreation. Pachallina, 13 South Main Street, is a treasure trove of natural fiber clothing and accessories. It is the fiber store of Long Acre Alpaca Farm, also located in Mercersburg on Blue Spring Road. Head a few doors north to 3 South Main to The Dressing Room & More, offering gently used, good quality consignment items and an array of home decor. Only nice things here and always nice prices! Cross the square and continue north to Four Dog Vintage Creations. Open the door and enter a world of colorful creativity--a nice twist on antiques and vintage furniture. It is a popular store, so inventory stays fresh. Make it a Mercersburg weekend. Check out the newly opened Long Acres Alpaca Farm Guest House for great views and relaxation.

Juicy, crisp white and red peaches are one of Chambersburg’s most delicious exports. Franklin County

orchards expect peaches around August through Labor Day. Varieties like Redhaven, Loring, and Sun High will be ready

in August. Redhaven is one of the earlier varieties of peaches and is very versatile. It is a semi-freestone and can be used for canning, freezing, or just enjoying as a snack. The Loring variety is popular for freezing and canning and a freestone peach. Sun High peaches usually ripen in mid-August and are an excellent free-stone peach for canning and freezing.

All varieties make delicious pies!!
